Athletes of the Month 2012

Emily Gilland ’12 Atrium/Daleville, Ind. Gilland, a captain and setter for the varsity volleyball team, helped guide her teammates to a 19-3 record. She led CGA to the Wawasee Invitational title and was named to the all-tournament team. For September, she led the team in aces and assists (a remarkable 526), is third for blocks, fourth for digs, and fifth for kills. She also has been invited to play in an Indiana East/West All Star Match.

Coach Matt Boland said, “Emily’s dedication to our success this season began last spring when she organized extra-practice sessions.

It continued as she helped organize our first pre-season camp. Her leadership throughout the season has created an atmosphere of hard work, high expectations, and competitive spirit. Emily exemplifies the Culver ideals as she leads the team to excellence.”

August/September 2011

Ralph Laux Battery B/Notre Dame, Ind. Laux helped guide the Eagles’ offensive and defensive attack through September. As the football team’s starting fullback, he led the team in carries and total yards (384). He also added six receptions for 49 yards. Defensively, Laux was a solid performer in the middle of the CMA defense. Facing stateranked opponents, Ralph accumulated 42 tackles, one sack, three forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery.

Coach Andy Dorrel said, “Ralph is an asset to the Eagle football program as his selfdiscipline and work ethic in the off-season enabled him to enjoy great success on the field. Ralph is the type of player all coaches enjoy working with as he leads through his actions, allowing his high level of play to illustrate his love and passion for the game of football.”

Andrea Lin ’12 Court/Burien, Wash.

As the libero, Lin accounted for 378 digs (almost 40% of the team’s total). She was the top serve-receive passer with .474 percentage (comparable to a batting average) and she accounted for nearly half of the team’s perfect passes. Lin also served 29 aces, with only nine errors on the season, and was the team’s most consistent server with a 97% rating. According to Coach Boland, “Andrea leads by example in everything she does. Her energy and excitement for the success of the team were second to none. She was the core of our successful defense this season. One of our opponent’s coaches even commented, Your libero is a stud!”

October 2011

Luther Jacobs ’13 Battery C/South Bend, Ind. Jacobs tallied 12 goals and 13 assists in October. According to Coach Jim Brugh, from the center of the formation, Jacobs does a masterful job at driving the offensive attack of the team and beginning the defense in transition scenarios.

His scoring this season was somewhat unexpected for a center midfielder. His main job of passing the ball to open men in deep attack would normally mean that he has many assists and fewer goals. But his goal output was nearly twice that of the center strikers who are on the end of Jacobs’ passes. He is the field general on the team. When Jacobs is “on his game,” CMA is dominating the play on the field.
