T

hank you for your wonderful support to Culver-Stockton College. We are happy to report the 2014-2015 fiscal year was another successful and outstanding year for the College. The amazing momentum on campus remains strong, with charitable donations to C-SC in 2014-2015 exceeding $3.4 million dollars. The College also saw an increase in the number of alumni making contributions to Culver-Stockton. More than 20 percent of alumni made the important decision to give back to C-SC, which is more than double the national average! Because of your outstanding support, the College also enjoyed an increase in foundation support, bringing in $1.1 million in foundation gifts. Over 90 percent of faculty and staff made a donation to support C-SC. This marks more than a decade of such support. This long trend is more than just a number. It demonstrates the committment C-SC faculty and staff have for the mission of Culver-Stockton College. In addition, we are once again proud to report 100 percent of our trustees supported the College through their gifts and they continue to be excited about our future! The momentum and excitement on campus is catching. In addition to the increased support provided by our trustees, alumni, foundations, faculty and staff, we are also thrilled to have reached a 20-year high in enrollment, with campus housing hitting residential capacity for the second year in a row. Your investment in Culver-Stockton College is paying off! As private colleges around the nation struggle to reach their enrollment goals, our applications are increasing and our retention is improving. There is no doubt about it, Culver-Stockton College is a college of choice. While we could not be happier about more students choosing to attend college on “the Hill,” our increased enrollment brings about

added opportunities. And Justin Ferris ’15 is excelling in law school at Washington University, one of the nation’s most prestigious programs. Thank you for your continued support of Culver-Stockton College. STATS AND HIGHLIGHTS A NEW STRATEGIC PLAN, “WE SEE THE FUTURE,” WAS RECENTLY DEVELOPED AT CULVER-STOCKTON BY THE CAMPUS COMMUNITY AND ADOPTED BY THE BOARD OF TRUSTEEES IN MAY. THE PLAN IS FOCUSED ON CONTINUING TO MEET THE NEEDS OF THE STUDENTS, AND HELPING THEM DEVELOP THE SKILLS NECESSARY TO LEAD SUCCESSFUL AND PURPOSEFUL LIVES. 3

ALUMNI SUPPORT OF THE ANNUAL FUND FOR STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS INCREASED BY 9% FROM THE 2013-2014 FISCAL YEAR. OVERALL ALUMNI PARTICIPATION DURING THE FISCAL YEAR REACHED 20%.

Excerpt From an Email to All Faculty Looking back through my entire life, I have never had teachers so dedicated to their students. Each of you is so passionate about your fields and all the knowledge you have to share with us students. Through the good times and the bad, the times that you've encouraged me and even the times when we were at odds, you were teaching me so much; not just about the subjects in each class but about life and about myself…. MYTHS OF GIVING The myths and facts listed below will focus on the use of gifts and provide key insights on managing the institution financially. MYTH: The Annual Fund is used for things like paying the light bill, gas bill, salaries, etc. FACT: 100% of the funds raised through the Annual Fund for Student Scholarships are used to fund scholarships for the students. C-SC is one of the only colleges that uses this philosophy in regard to their annual fundraising efforts. The Annual Fund for Student Scholarships is used to fund the fine arts, athletic and academic awards. To make the intention of this fundraising effort transparent we are changing the name for the 2015-2016 campaign to the Student Scholarship Fund. MYTH: I don't have the option to choose where my contribution will go. FACT: You can choose what you support. This is called restricting a gift and means that the donor has a specific goal in mind for their donation. To restrict your gift, simply write what you want your contribution to benefit when you make your gift. When you put your request in writing, it removes any question about where the funds should go. You will receive a receipt that acknowledges your gift and identifies where the funds have been placed. MYTH: I can just send the scholarship funds I would like to provide directly to the student of my choice. FACT: The IRS tax code stipulates for a gift to qualify as tax deductible, the donor is not allowed to directly select the recipient. If you send a gift directly to a student, they are required to notify the Financial Aid Office of any outside funding they have received. Gift aid from outside resources can impact the type of financial aid the student receives. The gift aid may also have to be reported as untaxed income on the tax return. MYTH: I can't give a lot, so it doesn't really matter if I make a donation. FACT: The percentage of alumni giving is a frequently requested data point for grant applications. Alumni participation is an indicator of strength of satisfaction, so actually every gift of any amount matters. It helps even more if donations are planned, or regular, so we can be certain about our resources. MYTH: C-SC is a not for profit organization, so does not need to worry about financial stability. FACT: Not for profit organizations have the same fiscal responsibility as any other business. They need enough resources to cover their costs of operation in order to remain viable. MYTH: I’ve already given. FACT: Many of us participated in multiple things while we were on the Hill; athletics, the arts, service organizations or Greek life. Throughout the year fundraising efforts will be engaged in to raise funds for special initiatives. While support is needed for the groups you may have once been a part of, in order for the students to join them, they first have to become students at C-SC. Make the Student Scholarship Fund a part of your giving.

here are many ways to give back to Culver-Stockton College, and all donors have their own reasons for doing so. No matter the reason for giving, the end goal is the same: helping Culver-Stockton College to flourish and continue providing outstanding educational experiences to as many students as possible.

Ron Freeman ’73 Ron Freeman ’73 went from a student who felt that CulverStockton College was not the right fit for him to being a campus leader and outstanding student. The transformation undergone by Freeman was inspired by a change in attitude that led to a renewed sense of purpose on campus.

As a young man, Freeman did not make his studies a priority in his life. “To put it in perspective, I graduated second from the bottom in my high school class,” said Freeman. “At that time, all I really cared about was having fun.”

Even after his first year at C-SC, Freeman still wasn’t a dedicated student. After sitting out for a semester, Freeman even intended to transfer on a rodeo scholarship to the University of Utah, where his brother also attended. “The night before I was supposed to leave, I woke up like a shot and I knew without a doubt I was supposed to return to CulverStockton,” remembers Freeman. “After that, my attitude changed. I pledged Sigma Phi Epsilon and I really started paying attention in my classes.” He credits C-SC for teaching him valuable communication skills, including how to write effectively and deliver a persuasive speech. He used those skills, along with lessons learned and his faith to develop Freeman Brother’s Ranch. The young man who wanted to be a cowboy and competed in professional rodeos while in college, has built a successful business on the development of organic beef.

Over the last 30 years he gravitated away from traditional cattle production to the belief that nature holds the key to efficient, profitable and safe beef production. Expanding on this, he began eliminating practices that existed outside of nature. When problems occurred with animals resulting in health or low performance issues, these animals were eliminated from the herd. The affects were dramatic. “My herd gradually improved genetically to accentuate their natural immune systems and further improve their production on grass,” Freeman said. It has been successful. He now also lends his expertise as a consultant to others exploring this type of ranching. Ron and his wife Jeanne have two sons, Jacob and Caleb and a daughter, Hannah. His ranch and home are near Jacksonville, Ill. From time to time he slips into campus to visit and check on things, but he also has visibly given back; sharing his professional

experiences on campus as a guest lecturer in business, and hosting Susan Deege’s and Eric Larson’s three week experiential learning class in the spring of 2014 at Freeman Brother’s Ranch to share his business model on organic ranching. He is an active supporter of the Student Scholarship Fund, and an advocate for the college. He wears his C-SC apparel with pride and gratitude for the educational experiences he had as a student. Time, talent, treasure, testimonial; he is paying his C-SC experience forward for a new generation of learners. “I am not successful because I am an extraordinary person. I am successful because I had extraordinary teachers, most of them at Culver-Stockton College,” said Freeman. “Culver-Stockton College is never more than one thought away.”

Though Blair Stanicek ’62 hasn’t been back to campus since the year he graduated with a double major in biology and physical education, the experiences he had as a student have made a profound impact on his life. In fact, he attributes much of his work ethic to the mentorship he was given by Bill Herington (W.A. Herington). “I transferred to C-SC my junior year and it was kind of my last chance stop. I had not done well in college up to that point,” said Stanicek. “With the help of people like Coach Herington, I was able to accomplish my goal of earning my degree.” Stanicek got to know Herington as his advisor and football coach at C-SC. “Coach Herington expected the best out of you, and if you didn’t give your best, you were on his bad side,” remembers Stanicek. “It was his mentorship, coupled with a little bit of growing up, that factored into my success at Culver-Stockton College.” After a successful career in sales with Medtronic, a medical device company, Stanicek and his wife, Arlene, wanted to give back to Culver-Stockton College. They decided to establish the Blair and Arlene Stanicek Endowed Scholarship, which is awarded to physical education majors on campus. “We wanted to set up this scholarship while we were still around to direct how it would be used, and to see the benefits of it ourselves,” said Stanicek. In addition to establishing their scholarship, the Staniceks were significant donors to the recently completed W.A. Herington Events and Sports Center.

David ’61 & Marsha ‘62 Kaczmarek David ’61 and Marsha (Willa) ’62 Kaczmarek did not date until socializing after college in Chicago, but Culver-Stockton still brought the two together as it was at an alumni gathering that they noticed each other. With a career in information technology, David was at the forefront of the industry, working at several companies, such as Whirlpool, when working in computers was a new idea. Marsha went after her dream to work in education and after her degree received her teaching certificate. The couple remains involved in the C-SC community by hosting student groups to showcase their extensive collection of World War I & II memorabilia. Now the couple has gone one step further by making plans to establish an endowed scholarship at the College.

Below is an excerpt from a recent letter written by Betty Godard, the daughter of Russell Dancey, addressed to current recipients of the Dancey Scholarship:

“One of the things I learned at C-SC, is if you apply yourself you can do just about anything you want,” Marsha said. Which is why the Kaczmarek’s would like to reward those students that do just that. While the details of the scholarship are still being decided, the Kaczmareks have set aside a portion of their estate to fund it. Supporting the College is important to the Kaczmareks for many reasons, one of which is the responsibility they feel for helping to carry the C-SC torch. “We want other young adults to have the same opportunities we had,” said David. “It is vital that every member of C-SC’s alumni base, young and old, understand the importance of giving back. Give back right away and get into the habit of giving.”

Russell Dancey grew up in Effingham, Ill., just after the turn of the last century. His parents were very good parents, but they were poor. There were eight children in the family and although they wanted to give their children good educations, it just wasn’t possible beyond high school. Russell, whose nickname was Bus, was a good athlete. He was a good student, not outstanding, but above average. When Bus graduated, he received a partial scholarship, tuition and books, but no money for room and board. His parents could just not help him in any way. … In life, if one door closes for you, another always seems to open. Bus started his own business: a potato chip company. He worked hard and his business was successful. He merged his company with the Frito Company, which then became the Frito-Lay Company, which soon merged with Pepsi Cola and became known as Pepsico. Well, Bus never forgot how it felt to want that education and not have the way to get it. He said, “If I am ever able to help kids like me, who have no other way to go to college, I’m going to do it.” That is how the Dancey Scholarships were started. Sometime, when you are older and have reached some degree of success, I hope you will think about Bus. I hope that if it is ever possible for you to reach out and help at least one other young person with a dream that you will do it. Tell them Bus sent you. CULVER.EDU
