T

he support the College received during the 2013-2014 fiscal year was record-breaking and truly amazing. In addition to the highest We are so grateful for the continued percentage ever of alumni giving back, the College received the largest support of the community, especially during amount of donations in its 161-year history. As it stands, the increased support to Culver-Stockton provides students access to first-rate resources and facilities. Among recent projects, the synthetic playing surface, NX LEVEL Field, has been installed in Ellison Poulton Stadium, the W.A. Herington Center is nearly complete and construction is in full swing on the Mabee Recreation and Wellness Center. The College also tripled its Internet bandwidth and completed energy system upgrades to every building on campus. The students have also benefitted from expanded offerings in the curriculum, especially the Travel Study component. When our students have the opportunity to participate in international and domestic travel courses, they gain cultural and global competencies that make them valuable members of society. Because of committed and generous support, 34 percent of Culver-Stockton’s graduating seniors participate in international Travel Study courses. And for all of that, we cannot thank you enough. When Mary Payne ’76 was going through her parents’ belongings after the death of her father, she ran across the paperwork they had begun to develop a scholarship at CulverStockton College. Though she was doing one of the most difficult jobs of her life in going through her parents’ personal effects, Mary and her brother David knew they wanted to do whatever possible to see this scholarship become a reality.

∫ The story of Mary’s parents Donald ’52 and Marilyn (Herbertz) ‘52 Payne, is a story of lifelong partnership and love. Though Don began his college career at Bradley University, he transferred to Culver-Stockton his junior year to be close to his sweetheart, Marilyn, a C-SC student whom he had met during a summer job. The two married shortly after Don’s transfer, and moved into the married students’ housing on campus. Though they were not exactly traditional students (Don was attending school on the G.I. Bill after serving in World War II as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division), the two were very involved on campus. Both pledged to Greek organizations— 25 Honor Roll

Tau Kappa Epsilon and Alpha Xi Delta— and Don was a pitcher on the Wildcat baseball team. Marilyn was also active in student government and the pep squad. “My dad always said that some of the best days of your life are at college,” said Mary. “My parents loved the environment of the College and the people there. In fact, they stayed connected with many of their college friends for the rest of their lives.” After college, the couple moved back to the Chicago area, while Don worked for ConAgra in the Duncan Hines division. He then transferred to the Scott Paper Company and his career moved their family all over the United States, to Omaha, Richmond and Cincinnati. After a few years, they decided to move back to their hometown of Palatine, Ill., and Don founded the D. J. Payne Co., a manufacturing representative business for paper and plastic packaging products. Don was very successful at growing the company for a decade, before selling it and retiring at 45 years of age. After they retired, Don and Marilyn moved to Hot Springs Village, Ark., where they remained happily active for the next four decades, golfing, boating and traveling in their RV.

The couple was married for 62 years, before Marilyn’s unexpected passing. Don survived Marilyn’s death by only ten months. “My parents had a true love story,” said Mary. “It was amazing how strong their marriage was.”

∫ To honor their parents’ wishes and to create a lasting legacy at Culver-Stockton, Mary and her brother, David, have gifted the College $100,000 to endow a scholarship in the Payne name. The scholarship is appropriately designated to benefit business students who demonstrate financial need (all four Payne’s studied in business-related fields in college). “My parents felt like education was the door to all opportunities,” said Mary. “David and I feel so blessed to be able to honor our parents and their wishes by creating this scholarship.”

Small World In 1974, the couple retired and moved from Palatine, Ill., to Hot Springs Village, Ark. Once there, they realized exactly how far-reaching C-SC connections can be when they learned their former professor, Joe Hootman, also lived in town. The coincidences didn’t end there; they also met Barb and Larry Schaffer living there. Barb was the daughter of another one of their professors, A.N. (Jake) Allen, and the Schaffers’ daughter was Mary’s roommate at C-SC. “It’s funny how life circles and comes back around,” said Mary. “For being such a small and serene place, the connections you make there are amazing.”
