Homecoming 2017 was truly a dream come true. We estimate over 2,700 alumni and friends joined us on “the Hill” for dedications, celebrations and honors. The weather was absolutely perfect and it gave us the opportunity to dedicate the Schwan Archway and the Carolyn L. & Robert W. Brown Hall under sunny skies. How terrific it was to announce that Brown Hall was fully funded and has an endowment to maintain the facility. I am grateful for our alumni and friends who are so generous in their support of Culver-Stockton.

Homecoming included honoring our distinguished alumni and those who have served notably, celebrating Greek anniversaries, memorializing veterans and acknowledging those who graduated 50 years ago. All these activities brought alumni back that haven’t visited the campus in decades. So many were impressed by all that has been accomplished.

Everyone enjoyed the parade through the streets of Canton, and the new seating in Ellison Poulton Stadium was filled to capacity to cheer on our Wildcats. It was a perfect weekend!

So please mark your calendars for Homecoming 2018, October 26-28. You don’t want to miss the fun.

As of our Fall census day we had 1,134 full and part-time students, 812 of which are living on campus. We welcomed 373 new freshmen and transfer students. Our new class came from 34 states, one U.S. territory and 12 countries. We are pleased to announce that our Master of Education program was launched this fall as was an undergraduate Chemistry major and a minor in Leadership. We have applied with the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education to provide a Master’s degree in Athletic Training.

Experiential learning is our foremost focus and we are researching the creation of a Center for Experiential Learning on our campus.

The travel study program led by Dr. Patrick Hotle is one of the best in the country.

Since 2008, C-SC faculty have led 36 study abroad courses and have visited 25 different countries. This fall we had students visiting Ireland and the Netherlands to study the European sport industry and risk management. Also students visited Nassau, Bahamas and Little Havana on a business travel study. Our unique three-week session is designed so that students take only one course. Whether it’s traveling abroad or domestically, engaging in an internship opportunity or taking a traditional course, the 12 week/3 week model provides the vocational tools and the “leadership” tools for a successful life after college.

Suggest to a high school student that C-SC may be a good fit for them or offer an internship opportunity at your place of business. The spirit of giving for today’s young men and women is extraordinary and diverse. NEW & NOTEWORTHY C-SC Announces Largest Fundraising Year in the History of the College

Academic Building Upgrades

President Kelly M. Thompson and the Culver-Stockton College Board of Trustees are pleased to announce the largest fundraising year in the history of the College. Over 6.7 million dollars were gifted during the fiscal year which ended June 30, 2017. As part of this record fundraising year, the Annual Student Scholarship Fund raised nearly 1 million dollars. In addition, the College reached its alumni participation goal of 20%, meaning one in five graduates made a gift during the most recent fiscal year.

There were several academic buildings that received upgrades and enhancements during the summer of 2017. The Carl Johann Memorial Library building received new windows; Herrick Foundation Center, which houses the Mabee Art Gallery and the business academic division, obtained new wall finish, flooring, lighting and paint in the front entrance and commons area.

C-SC Surpasses “We See the Future” Enrollment Goal C-SC welcomed another large incoming class with 379 new students for fall of 2017. This number includes freshman, transfer and international students and brings total enrollment to the second largest in the history of the College. When C-SC developed the ‘We See the Future’ strategic plan in 2015, the goal stated a total headcount of 1,100 students by 2020, and it has been surpassed. As of Census Day count, enrollment at the College is over 1,100 total students.

C-SC Launches Esports Program The C-SC Board of Trustees, at their fall meeting, voted to begin a program for competitive video games known as esports. The College will compete under the National Association of Collegiate Esports (NACE) beginning in Fall 2018. The newly dedicated Carolyn L. & Robert W. Brown Residence Hall includes three classrooms and a room designated for the esports program. The room will be equipped with gigabit internet connection as well as 12 workstations and other specialized gaming equipment. Visit esports. culver.edu for more information.

GREEK LIFE Residential Hall Updates

Lambda Chi Alpha Celebrates 150th Anniversary

Many of C-SC’s residential halls were updated and enhanced during the summer of 2017. Shannon Hall received a nearly halfmillion dollar upgrade to the facility. The enhancements included new windows, bathrooms and LED lighting, as well as new drywall and paint throughout the building. Weldon Hall received bathroom upgrades and new paint to the exterior and McDonald Hall received restroom upgrades. A new roof was installed on Stone Hall, C-SC’s premier upperclassmen residential hall, which was completely overhauled and rededicated in 2013.

Gerlach Hall Gets Updates Gerlach Hall, home to Lambda Chi Alpha, received a gift to install new tile and carpet throughout the entire building and remodel bathrooms with new cabinets, vanity tops, showers, tile and paint.

C-SC Recognized by Colleges of Distinction

C-SC IMA Chapter Receives National Awards

Culver-Stockton College was named a 2017-2018 College of Distinction, following its prior recognition in 2015-2016. The goal of Colleges of Distinction is to provide students, counselors and parents information about schools that excel in key areas. The key areas that colleges are evaluated for acceptance are the level of engagement of students, the teaching style of the faculty, the overall vibrancy of the community and the outcomes of the graduates and alumni.

C-SC’s Institute of Management (IMA) chapter was recognized as a 2016-2017 Outstanding Student Chapter with an Award of Excellence. C-SC’s IMA student chapter received a plaque and $1,000 award.

A member of the C-SC IMA student chapter, Emily Gold, also took home the “gold.” She was selected to receive the 2017 IMA Memorial Education Fund (MEF) Scholarship in the amount of $2,500.

Senior Business Student Elected National President of PBL Kimberly Clark, a senior business, finance and political science major from Canton, Missouri, was elected as the national president of Phi Beta Lambda (PBL), the collegiate chapter of the largest career student organization in the world. As the national president of the organization, some of her main responsibilities consist of overseeing strategic and administrative tasks that affect the structure of the organization and traveling to regional high schools to promote membership.

Senior Soccer Player Sets Record Mackenzie Northern ’18, men’s soccer player from Leeds, England, set the school’s all-time record for goals and points in a career. Northern netted 34 career goals and recorded 80 career points in his four-year career. Those marks break the previous mark of 31 goals and 74 points set by Wildcat Hall of Famer Jacob Schneider from 1995-98. Northern added 12 career assists during his tenure.

PERFORMING ARTS The Addams Family

Culver-Stockton College opened the 2017 Performing Arts year in September with the musical spoof on gothic ghost stories, The Addams Family. Based on characters from the popular 1960’s television show of the same name, the musical poked fun at people who take themselves too seriously and reminded everyone that in a truly happy life, dreams and imagination (and even quirky outlooks on what seems real) must exist along with ambition and careful planning.

A Night with Edward Albee C-SC’s production of A Night with Edward Albee in November examined the eponymous playwright’s biting criticism of his own society’s lack of success in maintaining integrity in 3 Absurdist one-act plays produced offBroadway as part of a series in 1960-61.

Kent Miller ’73, Professor of Theater Arts and Technical Director, assumed both stage and technical direction duties for the production. The plays Miller chose from the series for A Night with Edward Albee were The Sandbox, Fam and Yam and The American Dream.

DONATIONS AT WORK Archway to Learning

Enhancements throughout the external portion of the buildings on campus took place during the summer of 2017. The Charlann Schwan Parkway received additional upgrades including an archway at the main entrance of the campus. This project was funded by Joe Schwan ’59. The College’s main entrance, located by the Ayerco Truck & Travel Plaza, was dedicated in 2014.

Phase Two of Mabee Center Completed C-SC received a generous donation which provided for phase two of the J.E. & L.E. Mabee Recreation and Wellness Center.

The men’s and women’s restrooms received renovations and outdoor seating and planters were added. A floor covering was also purchased for the gymnasium to protect the floor during non-athletic events.

Carillon Bell System Replaced The carillon bell system is located in Henderson Hall and was originally dedicated in 1964. The bell chimes are a familiar sound throughout campus and the streets of Canton. In 2017 the system was replaced after an approximate $8,000 gift was made toward the project. The new system has the option for automatic or live performances and includes four different bell sounds.

The largest project of the summer on “the Hill” was the Carolyn L. and Robert W. Brown Residence Hall.

The J.E. and L.E. Mabee Foundation issued a $400,000 project completion challenge grant to raise funds for the project. The C-SC community was challenged to raise the funds by April of 2018; this challenge was met and exceeded. As of the dedication of the facility in September, the building was over one hundred percent funded. The residence hall is a suite-style arrangement; each suite has two rooms with four beds. Rooms have general seating, a kitchenette, private bathrooms and built-in closets. In addition, the building is equipped with three state-of-theart classrooms as well as an esports facility in one wing.

C-SC’s entire campus is now paved after the parking lot in between Brown and Henderson halls was finished as part of the project.

New Seating at Ellison Poulton Stadium The College installed new seating at Ellison Poulton Stadium. The old seats were originally from Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri, and were installed in 2003.

Campus Landscaping Enhanced Landscaping was added south of Johnson Hall, an upperclassman residential hall, as well as around the Robert W. Brown Performing Arts Center. The landscaping in front of the Performing Arts Center was enhanced after receiving an approximate $5,000 gift. culver.edu 6

Homecoming 2017 was an enormous success under the theme, “Soaring into the Future,” and record attendance was generated.

The weekend featured reunions for black/minority alumni, as well as class reunions for the Classes of ’57, ’67, ’77, ’87, ’92, ’97 and ’07. In addition, the Class of 1967 was welcomed into the Top of the Hill Society. Sigma Kappa celebrated their 70th anniversary while Chi Omega and Lambda Chi Alpha both celebrated their 150th anniversaries. Fireworks on Friday night added a beautiful highlight to the opening of another exciting homecoming weekend as onlookers admired the display from “the Hill.”

Culver-Stockton College formally dedicated the new Carolyn L. and Robert W. Brown Residence Hall and the Schwan Entrance Archway which were funded by generous donors and friends of the College. Tours were available to showcase these and the stadium improvements. President Thompson noted that the campus has been completely transformed with improvements over the past several years and many visitors expressed excitement about the many changes.

The weekend was packed with various events that included the Blue and White Mixer, President’s Leadership Breakfast, Top of the Hill Luncheon, Alumni Baseball Game, Women’s Alumni Basketball Game, class reunions, sorority and fraternity anniversaries, the Fun Run, football game, soccer games and the Black/Minority Alumni Reunion BBQ, where alumni were able to reunite and reminisce. Influential alumni were recognized for their accomplishments professionally and in their communities at the Alumni Honors Banquet during which they expressed their love for C-SC. Honors consisted of Distinguished Alumni,

Outstanding Young Alumnus, Alumni Service and Leadership and Hall of Fame inductees. Greek celebrations were held on Saturday beginning with the Chi Omega Sisterhood Ceremony and followed by the Sigma Kappa 70th, Chi Omega 150th and Lambda Chi Alpha 150th Anniversary Celebrations.

Athletic events began on Friday evening with soccer where the Lady Wildcats defeated Waldorf University and the men battled Waldorf University to a tie after two overtimes. The main event on Saturday began following Wildcat Willie’s Tailgate cookout.

The crowd was filled with energy as spectators enjoyed the football game from the new seating at Ellison Poulton Stadium. New head coach, Tom Sallay ’01, and his new squad of warriors fought valiantly on the field but their efforts proved unsuccessful against Missouri Valley College.

Crowds lined the street as the parade began on a crisp fall morning who gathered to support and celebrate the dignitaries, homecoming court, athletic teams, student floats and local organizations. Local high school and junior high school bands competed and this year the local Canton Junior High School band nabbed first place in their division. The parade was streamed live on Facebook and featured color commentary from our own KATZ 5 student talent. Thousands from various parts of the United States as well as Mexico and Australia tuned in to enjoy the festivities.

The excitement and energy of the day was palpable and the packed campus left all past and present students celebrating their time on “the Hill.”

Millions of fans plop in front of some sort of screen to watch the Super Bowl every year. There’s no shortage of pomp and circumstance associated with the annual event; it’s the climax of the NFL’s season where a group of men are crowned champions after all of the blood, sweat and tears of a five-month odyssey.

For Abbey Kortz, that odyssey began in high school and reached its pinnacle when the AFC and NFC champions battled for the Vince Lombardi Trophy on February 4 at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Kortz, a 2012 Culver-Stockton College graduate, knew in high school she wanted to work in the sports industry. It wasn’t until her junior year at C-SC when her finance class took a trip to a St. Louis Blues game that she wanted to work in operations.

“I knew coming into my freshman year that I wanted to study sport management,” said Kortz, “but it wasn’t until my junior year when I decided what department to focus on.”

“I took an events and facilities class my sophomore year and I had a lot of interest in the subject. Then in my junior year, the finance class went to a St. Louis Blues game. Before the game we got to tour the Scottrade Center with their Operations Manager and that was the night I told myself I wanted to be in his shoes one day.”

After graduating from C-SC, Kortz enrolled at Missouri Baptist University to attain her master’s degree. While there, she interned in the operations department for the St. Louis Cardinals when they went to the World Series in 2013.

“I had my first internship at the University of Missouri-St. Louis with the Events and Facilities Manager, but it wasn’t for me,” asserted Kortz. “I went on to intern with the Cardinals in their Stadium Operations department and it was a lifechanging experience for me. I knew I was destined to be doing this for a living.”

After her internship ended in 2014, Kortz says none of the sports organizations were hiring in St. Louis so she took a sales position with the Germain Arena and Florida Everblades of the East Coast Hockey League in Fort Myers, Florida.

“This is how I got more experience and because it was a small organization I could shadow and learn all aspects of the operations of a professional team.”

After a year in Florida, Kortz says although she was good at her sales job, it wasn’t her passion. When she saw a job posting for the new stadium in Minneapolis, she jumped at the chance to get back into operations.

Kortz began her tenure in Minnesota working with the Sales and Event Staff for the setup and tear down of every event in the stadium. Recently, she switched roles and is now working with the facilities manager and Department of Operations doing maintenance and capital improvements.

As the main contact for the Minnesota Vikings, Kortz triple checks all areas of the stadium used by the organization. She makes sure all premium seating areas, clubs and suites are in pristine condition, and she assists the Vikings equipment manager, operations manager and turf crew.

Kortz is also the main contact for Super Bowl LII. One might think hosting one of the biggest sporting events in the world that is watched by over 114 million people world-wide would make that person nervous.

But not Kortz.

“Honestly, I am excited but calm,” she said. “I’m sure once it gets a little closer I will be stressed but everyone I have been working with so far has been great.

“Many of the people that I have been working with have worked 20-plus Super Bowl events, so they make it clear what their needs/wants are. I am learning so much from them and this is a great opportunity for me.”

Kortz already knows this won’t be her last Super Bowl and that this is just the start of many great events in her career.

“My career goal is to be a director of operations for a professional team. I love what I do and it doesn’t feel like work to me. I am beyond excited and I can’t wait to see what comes next in my future.”

Next would be the NCAA Final Four, which is slated to be played at U.S. Bank Stadium in April 2019.

The “We See the Future” Strategic Plan was developed by the Strategic Planning Committee during the 2014-15 academic year. Over the past two academic years, Culver-Stockton College has achieved significant accomplishments in academics that are advancing the C-SC vision: “to continue to be a premier institution of higher education recognized for our innovative experience-based curriculum preparing students for leadership roles in an ever-changing world.”

Changing Lives Through Providing a Premier Educational Experience High-Quality Experiential Learning Highlights from three major areas of the plan include exploring the options of expanding our online, graduate and certificate programs, moving to university status and promoting high-quality experiential learning. The faculty established a strategic plan for experiential education to advance excellence in learning through experience at Culver-Stockton College. Two goals within the strategic plan include implementation of the Experiential Education Academy (EEA) certification program and establishment of a Center for Experiential Education. C-SC will celebrate its 10-year anniversary of the implementation of the 12-week/3-week academic calendar in 2018, which enhances the delivery of experiential learning, and is founded on seven pillars of student success – Research, Simulation, Creative Expression, Leadership, Travel Study, Innovation and Professional Experience.

ACADEMIC AFFAIRS plans to host the Experiential Education Academy on campus and our goal is to certify seventy-five percent of the faculty in experiential education. The Academy will launch in May of 2018.

Creation of a Center. A Center for Experiential Education will provide a showcase for the seven types of experiential learning. It will also provide teaching resources for faculty and resources for our students to access experiential opportunities.

Expansion of Online, Graduate, Certificate and Dual-Credit Offerings New On-Campus Programs. Over the past two years, a number of new programs have been launched including majors in Health Science (2016) and Music Technology (2017). Additionally, a Chemistry major was re-established along with Biology Education and General Science Education in 2017.

New Online Offerings. In the fall of 2015, C-SC added majors in Accountancy, Marketing and Sport Management to the line-up of online offerings of Business, Criminal Justice and Criminal Justice Administration. With the addition of new online programs, the enrollment in online undergraduate programs reached an all-time high in 2017 with 58 students enrolled. A significant number of our traditional, on-campus students are also taking online coursework concurrently with their on-campus courses. Over 370 traditional, on-campus undergraduate students enrolled in an online course in 2016-17 academic year.

3+2 MBA Program. The MBA Program enrollment reached an alltime high in 2017 with 45 graduate students. Nearly 60 percent of the MBA students are C-SC undergraduate alumni. Master in Education Program. In the fall of 2017, C-SC launched a Master in Education (M.Ed.) for practicing teachers. “Having opportunities to advance their educational practice through a Master of Education program affords teachers access to practical information that is immediately applicable to their own classrooms.

The convenience of online learning combined with high quality, practical content allows teachers to meet the expectations of professional growth without sacrificing attention to other aspects of their lives.” stated Dr. Diana King, M.Ed. Program Chair.

New Learning Management System. For both traditional students and students enrolled in online programs, a quality learning management system (LMS) is a quintessential tool of learning, upon which all courses are structured. In the fall of 2016, C-SC implemented the new Canvas learning management system. Canvas is the LMS of choice for over 3,000 institutions and provides convenient mobile access.

The Canvas LMS allows faculty the ability to record audio and video feedback while grading, use evaluation rubrics in scoring and provides students with a more engaging learning experience.

Certificate programs. In the spring of 2018, C-SC will launch its first certification program. C-SC is officially a testing center for the QuickBooks Certification Examination and Lecturer John Reinhardt is an official proctor for the examination. Students taking the three credit hour course in QuickBooks and Excel will

“We See the Future” Strategic Plan implemented including revision of College’s mission statement

endowment are considered “restricted” or “unrestricted.” Distribution of funds from the unrestricted pool are used for operation purposes throughout the College. Restricted endowment funds are established by donors with certain purposes in mind. Endowed scholarships and lectureships are two of the most common types of endowments on campus. These funds were gifted to C-SC with the understanding by the donor and the College that the annual distribution would only be used for the specifically named purpose.

Growing the endowment is a major focus for C-SC. A larger endowment provides the College with the stability to meet the increasing costs associated with providing the high quality education that students, their families and the alumni and friends of the College expect.

Philanthropy at C-SC set a record during the 2016-17 year. C-SC received over $6.7 million dollars in cash and 20 percent of our alumni made a gift to the College. These are impressive numbers and shows the strength of the institution’s support from alumni.

However, a breakdown of the numbers reveals a clearer picture into the charitable giving by alumni and friends. The College received gifts ranging from a few dollars up to a single gift of $2,740,000. Gifts came from nearly every graduating class year and the oldest donor was 101 years old.

C-SC is supported by a wide demographic of donors. Likewise, there is an equally wide range of interest areas of support. Some donors are interested in supporting our Student Scholarship Fund which generates almost $1 million dollars of scholarship support annually for deserving C-SC students. These gift dollars come into the College and are immediately put toward helping our students afford the high-quality education students expect to receive on “the Hill.”

ACADEMIC AFFAIRS to help fund specific projects while others want to create their own endowment. The two facilities that were dedicated at homecoming in September, the Schwan Archway and Carolyn L. and Robert W. Brown Residence Hall, were both fully funded exclusively through private charitable gifts. These gifts not only enhance the College and provide wonderful new facilities, but they also do so without having to tap into the College’s general operating budget or adding long-term debt into the financial books for the College.

Many reactions and comments could be overheard during homecoming weekend reflecting on our donors’ pleasure in giving. A number of donors mentioned how efficiently the College used each dollar. Donors could see the tremendous return on investments toward their giving. A number of scholarship donors specifically commented at the Student Scholarship Luncheon as to how pleased and impressed they are with the scholarship recipients.

This efficient use of charitable funds and the return on the investment is critically important; donors or prospective donors want and deserve to feel as though they are making a difference.

Dr. Chaka Batley BSN ’08, MBA ’17 Changing Lives from Experience When Chaka Batley ’08 crossed the stage at her second C-SC commencement in May 2017, she knew that her reinvestment in C-SC would enable her to continue to change lives, but in a heightened way. Batley received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 2008 from C-SC and Blessing Rieman College of Nursing and Health Sciences.

She obtained her Master of Science in Nursing (2011) and her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree (2013), both from the University of Iowa.

A life-long learner, she went back to obtain her Master of Business Administration Degree from C-SC to elevate her baseline of business knowledge and leadership skills, both in and out of the healthcare field.

Batley was excited about returning to C-SC to obtain her master’s degree. “I had a great experience at Culver-Stockton.

The faculty have always been amazing, so it made sense to come back for my MBA.” Batley is currently a pediatric nurse practitioner for Quincy Medical Group in Quincy, Illinois, and has been there since 2011. She and her husband Garrick ’13, along with their six children, call Quincy their home. Batley chose the healthcare field for her career with the focus of changing lives and she is a true philanthropist in every sense of the word. She serves on the board for the Madonna House, a housing and homeless shelter in Quincy, is on the board for the Quincy Chamber of Commerce, is a legislative chair of the Illinois chapter of the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners, participates in “Young Lives,” a teen-mom mentoring program, and is very active in her church. She’s also served on international mission trips to Haiti, Uganda, Cambodia and India. Needless to say, Batley has a passion for service.

When asked why she feels the desire to give back and help change others’ lives, she commented, “I love investing into others, serving people and giving them hope. I am deep-rooted in my faith. I feel compelled to give back and it is such a rewarding experience for me.”

Batley also credits overcoming adversity to her success as a motivator to help others. A child of poverty, she was driven to defy the odds, but not without showing her gratitude in giving back to others. She was honored by the Quincy YWCA with the Phoenix Award, given to local women who have overcome obstacles or who advocate and assist others in overcoming obstacles to rise from poverty or other difficult situations.

to show others that life can be hard, but you should never be defined by the obstacles you face and instead use them to propel you to rise above.” Batley also focuses on continued growth and development, strives to be a life-long learner and will never become complacent. However, everything she does for others does not come without a massive amount of support of her family and church family.

Roger B. Innes ’65 was born March 29, 1943, in Chicago, Illinois; he was the son of Robert B. Innes, a plumber, and Dorothy L. Innes, a housewife, and brother of older sister Gail Innes. In 1961, Innes graduated from South Shore High School in Chicago, Illinois, where he was a hall monitor, a member of both the wrestling and track teams and his church youth group. During high school, Innes worked at a drug store and enjoyed sailing. Roger enrolled in CulverStockton College in 1961 with a declared major of Business Administration. During his time on campus, Innes was an honor student and president of the Tau Kappa Epsilon (TKE) Fraternity on campus. Throughout the four years Roger spent on “the Hill,” Roger developed a love for mathematics and decided to switch his major. Innes graduated from C-SC in 1965 with a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics. That same year, he married fellow student Sandy J. Noeth; they lived together in Brunswick, Georgia.

After graduating from C-SC, Innes took his skill in mathematics and decided to serve his country by enlisting in the U.S. Navy. Roger was at the top of his class while at Pensacola Naval Base. His expertise landed him the position of Radar Intercept Officer (RIO) on a fighter aircraft aboard the USS Kitty Hawk. In the fall of 1967, Innes was sent to Vietnam.

On December 27, 1967, pilot Leonard Lee and Innes launched a mission into North Vietnam; the last radio communication with the two was on this date. After two days of searching, they were listed missing in action. For 33 years, there were no answers.

In the summer of 1999, the crash site was finally found and excavated and the remains of Innes were recovered and identified; his jet had been shot down over North Vietnam and crashed in the bay where Innes and his co-pilot died upon impact. Roger Innes died at the age of 24, just a month after he was deployed. Roger was survived by both of his parents, sister Gail Innes and his widow.

Although this information is now known, Roger’s parents both passed away without ever knowing what had happened to their son. Gail described the time not knowing whether or not her brother had been captured and tortured, killed or was still alive. During most of this time, Gail kept a diary trying to keep track of major events that had happened during Roger’s time away in case he returned. Gail also found support from the National League of Families and No Greater Love groups. Eventually, the combined efforts of Central Identification Laboratory, Hawaii (CILHI), Joint Task Force – Full Accounting (JTF-FA), Navy Casualty and Navy Mortuary provided closure and answers for Roger’s sister and widow.

In September of 2000, his remains were returned to the United States and buried by his family at Arlington National

Cemetery in Virginia. September 15, 2000, was designated as National MIA/POW Day and there was a service at the Pentagon at 11 A.M.; later in that day, a memorial service was held near Arlington National Cemetery at Fort Myer, Virginia. Family members and friends were invited to attend.

Roger’s sister and cousins were in attendance as well as his widow, Sandy Noeth Davis.

During C-SC’s 2017 Homecoming, a room was dedicated in the TKE house in honor of Roger B. Innes. After TKE’s annual awards, President Kelly M. Thompson shared how pleased she was about the room. Then Davis began the room presentation with a ribbon cutting. Many C-SC faculty, staff, students and alumni were in attendance. Current and former TKE members such as Larry Sutton ’63 and current TKE president, Alec Boren ’18, had the chance to share their thoughts as well. Because Sutton was close friends with Roger and Sandy during their college years, he talked about what Roger would have been doing and his past. As a senior TKE member, Boren shared his feelings about the great opportunity to celebrate a past member who made the ultimate sacrifice.

“The Innes study room will be a permanent place in the house to show an example of what our members have done,” explained Boren. “As an active member, you’re always thinking about the alumni and the members who come before you. This room really shows to current members the impact of fraternity projects and why we do them.”

The Roger Innes Memorial Study Room is located in the TKE Zenge Fraternity Hall on campus and contains TKE and Mu Theta Nu memorabilia. It is expected to have a lasting impact on all current and future members of the fraternity. Roger’s love for the campus and his dedication to the TKE Fraternity will live on through this beautiful memorial study room.

BY AMANDA SORENSON, CHAPLAIN For the past eight years, Extreme Dome Makeover, commonly known as EDM, has been a staple in our new student orientation weekend or Wildcat Welcome. This year, Extreme Dome Makeover is getting a makeover of its own.

EDM began in 2010 as way to connect and engage students with the city of Canton and teach the students about giving back to the community. Creator, Dr. Jay Hoffman, dreamed of merging the needs he saw in town with a mass number of people who could do the work and brought to life what has now become a tradition on “the Hill.”

On the first morning of freshman orientation, first-year students follow a police and firetruck escort as they process down the concourse into the city of Canton. From there, all the First Year Experience (FYE) groups go to different work sites. Projects at each site vary greatly from painting houses or leading games at the Lewis County Nursing home to installing playground equipment or building a butterfly garden. Once their projects are complete, students have lunch at one of the four churches within walking distance of the College. This year was an especially exciting day for us. Missouri governor, Eric Greitens, and his son, Joshua, surprised our incoming class by speaking at the kickoff and working alongside them in their projects. Our students worked at 19 different sites, a record number!

EDM is well known by students and members of the community. It has given students the opportunity to serve in the community, meet community members, bond with fellow students and even learn some new skills along the way. An estimated 2,500 students, faculty and staff have participated in the service projects and nearly 100 projects have been completed during the first eight EDMs. Community member and EDM volunteer, Crystal Bell, said “It makes a really big difference to the town to see some of the things that can be accomplished.”

EDM has evolved over the years to move from a service project to a service learning project as students have been provided with more intentional ways to reflect on what they do and learn from it. We also want our students to experience more and more

opportunities for service and celebrate what our students are already doing for others, so EDM is expanding.

Extreme Dome Makeover began as a one-day event. That will most definitely continue to be a tradition and part of orientation, but we are broadening our definition of EDM to include ALL of the service work our students and alumni are involved in.

Going forward, EDM will stand for “Everyone Doing More” as an umbrella to celebrate all the ways students and alumni give back to communities both locally and globally. Dr. Scott Giltner had this to say about the new EDM concept, “...EDM is not just for first-year students…” and that “...the sense of service that we work to instill in our Students of Promise should not just play out in the shadow of the Dome. They carry that stewardship, indeed as they carry their time on ‘the Hill,’ with them wherever they go.”

Service learning is one of the key components in experiential learning and we strive for our students to have opportunities to participate in service beyond this first event. EDM is important because it teaches students the value of being an engaged citizen and allows them to understand the importance of giving back.

It helps students feel more invested in the community because they are active participants in it and meet the people who live and work in the area. It is also important to who we are as a college, affiliated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), as we are a denomination committed to being a “movement for wholeness in a fragmented world.”

Service learning is not just a one-day event, but continuous participation in the betterment of our communities. As we continue making service learning a part of the students’ experience throughout their college career, this will allow us to incorporate more students. You can participate, too! As Dr. Giltner said of the Everyone Doing More concept, “...it’s not just students looking ahead but students, faculty and staff, as well as Canton and beyond, joining in an ever-expanding community of service.”

Short Answer with Dr. Lauren Schellenberger Lauren Schellenberger is the chair of the Applied Liberal Arts and Sciences division and an associate professor of biology. She has worked at Culver-Stockton College for 9 years (currently in the 10th year). She resides in Canton, Missouri with her husband Steve and their two sons, Samuel and Henry.

When I first got to Culver-Stockton, I thought…

I thought the people were friendly and the campus was beautiful. I liked the smalltown atmosphere both on campus and in Canton. Although I came to CulverStockton directly from Purdue University, I’m originally from Ashland, Illinois, so I felt very much at home at a small school in a small town.

The words in the dictionary that best describe me are…

Patient, practical, analytical. Patience always pays off, especially when teaching.

I also like to look at things practically and analytically. That’s one reason why I like the sciences.

If I had one “do-over,” I would…

I don’t think about do-overs much. If I make a mistake, I try to learn from it and move on. Aside from learning a lesson, there isn’t much value in revisiting a failure again and again. That’s emotional energy that could be spent on something more productive.

The most unforgettable person at Culver-Stockton is…

John Brodmann. He was the first person I met when I moved into my office in the Science Center. He was incredibly welcoming and friendly. He is still on campus and helping students all the time.

My favorite spot on campus is…

Definitely the Science Center. This building has everything – students studying like crazy, chemistry experiments, skeletons, bananas in the greenhouse in the dead of winter, strange smells – what’s not to love? There is always something interesting happening, because we have some very creative students, faculty and staff.

The older I get, the more I realize…

To be successful, the importance of “people skills” is undeniable. One of the real benefits of a Culver-Stockton College education is that students are encouraged to explore and expand their personal development and soft skills through a variety of experiences in and out of the

classroom – it’s not just about technical knowledge and skills. This is part of the beauty of a liberal arts education.

The most useful piece of advice I ever received was…

“Failing to plan is planning to fail.” I have received a lot of good advice over the years, but actually giving advice is literally part of my job (academic advising). The importance of planning and preparation is something I emphasize with students.

My favorite memory of C-SC is…

I can’t pick out just one memory, but most of my favorite memories come from the many times I have traveled with students, especially to Belize & Guatemala. It’s especially gratifying to see hard work and planning come to fruition when students connect course material with real-life encounters in another country. That’s the kind of experience we are always trying to create for students at C-SC.

Laura Johnson is a senior communication major with an emphasis in public relations and a minor in psychology.

Johnson grew up in Palmyra, Missouri but now resides in Missoula, Montana. She is one of the first Resident Assistants in Brown Hall. Johnson is the editor-in-chief of the College’s newspaper, the Megaphone. She is also a member of KATZ5 television station on campus.

Flying back to Culver-Stockton is an exciting time for me.

I live in Missoula, Montana and despite the distance I have from my family, I love being on campus. This year was extra exciting, not just because I’m completing my senior year for my communication degree, but because I got to start my job as a Residence Assistant for the new Brown Hall.

I was so excited for Brown Hall I wanted to grab a hammer and get to work myself. I knew that would have been literally disastrous for everyone involved.

I decided to do something different. I decided to blow kisses to Brown Hall every time I passed. My thought process was I could build up the hall emotionally while the workers built it up physically.

I’ve had many naysayers, but having lived there for a while I think it helped.

One morning I was driving past Brown Hall and I blew it my kiss. When I looked over I locked eyes with one of the workers, who thought the kiss was for him. I was so embarrassed and there was no way I was going to be able to signal my kiss was for the building and not him. In a panic I decided that the best idea would be to blow the worker next to him a kiss, so the first man wouldn’t think it was just for him.

It did not make it better. It made it worse. In an awkward haze I ended up blowing kisses to every worker there that morning before quickly driving off.

As mortified as I was in the moment, now I wish that I could blow a kiss to everyone who was involved in building Brown Hall. Not just the workers who were there that day, but to those who donated their money and time, helped draw plans and supported the idea, who planned the housing, everyone. So many hands and hearts touched this project and the scope of it is bigger than I may ever realize.

I encourage you, wherever you are, to blow a kiss to Brown Hall. I’m sure that it will find its way. In your own way encourage the hall that has become home to the students who live there. This is not just for the 48 students who live there now, but all of the people who will get to be there in the future.

On behalf of those students, future and present I want to say thank you. Thank you for supporting us. Thank you for giving us a home. Thank you for making Culver-Stockton College, just that much better.

Passion is defined in Webster’s Dictionary as “an intense desire or enthusiasm for something.” Nothing can better describe the character of Mike Bringer ’93. When Bringer received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice, he was ready to serve in any capacity with an immense amount of passion.

A native of Canton, Missouri, Bringer served as both a law enforcement officer with the Canton Police Department and a responder with the Canton Fire Department while enrolled fulltime at Culver-Stockton College. Like most C-SC students, he was involved in many activities on campus. He immersed himself in intramural sports and was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity and the Criminal Justice Club. He even played in the College’s concert band. Bringer was grateful to his advisors and for his experience at C-SC; he knew he had made the right college choice based on all of the opportunities he experienced, even prior to his commencement ceremony.

“Team-oriented” is another way to describe Bringer. After graduation, Bringer immersed himself into the law enforcement field, where teamwork is a crucial element. During this time, Bringer was also faced with his first challenge - the epic flood of 1993; he assisted with both the fire and police departments.

Later, Bringer attended police academy and had hopes of becoming a member of a large urban police department and SWAT team. Because of his experience and leadership while in college, he naturally ended up in law enforcement administration early. As a member of the Columbia Police Department in Columbia, Missouri, Bringer recalled one of his first experiences of “chasing a man on foot through the city, even crossing the I-70 interstate to apprehend him.” Bringer went to basic SWAT school 27 Chronicle, Winter 2018

and even obtained federal certifications in investigative work, but was still trying to find a place to call home.

Bringer was elected as the Lewis County Sheriff in 1996 and is still one of the youngest sheriffs ever elected in the state of Missouri. In fact, he was even featured on the front cover of the College’s Chronicle shortly after his appointment. He served one term and handed the reigns over to David Parrish, another C-SC graduate. Bringer also worked for the Northeast Missouri Drug Task Force. Later, he oversaw his own landscaping business. It only made sense that all of these skills were building Bringer into a multi-faceted individual, and it only made sense for him to come back to “the Hill” to serve the College.

In the 2007-08 year, Bringer was hired as the director of campus safety. He was excited and honored to be working for his alma mater. Bringer commented that he greatly enjoyed being available to students, even serving as an advisor for the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity. He was also able to implement several initiatives such as Rape Aggression Defense training sessions for female students.

A few years later, Bringer found himself overseeing the operations of not only campus safety activities but also facilities and grounds. He was promoted to Director of Facilities and Security. Bringer also assists with Strageos, the first armed intruder training for faculty and staff on campus. Bringer also consults with high schools and other colleges to help their faculty and staff know how to handle crisis situations.

As enrollment at C-SC continued to climb, the College knew a new residential hall might be necessary if the momentum continued. Once the decision was made to begin construction

plans, Bringer was put in charge of the project. “It was a huge responsibility – handling the oversight of the job – but the instrumental part of any project is communication. Tying together the communication between the contractors and key people on campus was challenging. It was definitely teamwork. However, my dad always told me to do my job to the best of my ability, and if I can’t do it right, don’t do it at all. You have to give more than 100 percent in anything you do.” Bringer also said he experienced a lot of pressure making all of the processes and procedures work together to accomplish the feat. “When doing a job like this, your name is on it. When you’re doing your work, your name is always attached to it.”

It was surreal leading the job of constructing a new residential hall to be named after the President that served around the time Bringer was a student. “I am eternally honored and grateful

to be part of a significant project.” The Carolyn L. and Robert W. Brown Residential Hall opened its doors to 48 students in September 2017.

A final word that relates to Bringer is service. On top of the many responsibilities he has on “the Hill,” he also continues to serve in his community with philanthropic work and service projects. Bringer is very active in his church, officiates and coaches youth athletics and is extremely passionate about his family. He and wife, Traci ’95, who works at C-SC as the Administrative Assistant for the Athletic Department, reside in rural Lewis County with their five children. Two of his children are enrolled at C-SC, one is in high school and two are in junior high school.

He was recognized with the President Award for Exemplary Service by President Emeritus Dick Valentine in 2013 and he was recently recognized by the student body as “best staff member” at the Willie Awards ceremony. Bringer explained winning the award meant a lot to him. “It’s always an honor when students recognize your work and provide positive feedback.”

Of all of the honors and experiences Bringer has had, he is proudest of being part of the students’ lives. He hopes to continue to create a positive experience for the students on campus. Bringer is looking forward to finding ways he can be part of the student experience, even more than he already is.

Bringer truly feels he has now found his home on “the Hill” and credits everything he has learned to his past experiences. “I’m thrilled to be part of the continued growth of the College and am looking forward to my next project.”

CLASS NOTES 1950’s Pauline (Wang) Tso ’53 traveled with members of Towne Singers, a community choir, to participate in the Jubilate Mozart in Salzburg, Austria this past summer. They performed Mozart’s “Coronation Mass’ in the Salzburg Dom, the cathedral where Mozart was baptized. Pauline lives in Los Angeles, Calif.

Glen ’65 and Lola (Sapp) ’66 Garrison of Garrison Group, Inc. were named Business Owner of the Year. The recognition goes to a business owner whose for-profit company has been in business in Sangamon County for a minimum of 25 years and who has made significant contributions to commerce and the community. Glen and Lola reside in Sherman, Ill. Dr. Wayne McGinnis ’66 retired Aug. 1, 2016 as Professor of English at Henderson State University after 43 years of college teaching. His wife, Sally, passed away on Sept. 3, 2017.

Betsy Fair ’68 traveled to Machu Picchu in Peru in April. Betsy is a retired educator from Wilton, Iowa.

Joyce Martello ’68 is retired and lives in Tinley Park, Ill. Seven years ago she had a bone marrow transplant but now is doing great!

Doug McEdwards ’68 has retired after twenty years in broadcasting, a master’s in mental health counseling, and twenty years as a clinical mental health counselor.

Currently, he serves as a per diem chaplain/ counselor for Hospice of Havasu. He resides in Lake Havasu City, Ariz.

Bill Iliffe ’69 has retired as director of corporate safety/health/environment. Bill and Cindy have two daughters and five grandchildren and live in Auburn, Ind. Jim Ream ’69 received an honorary doctorate of Humane Letters from the University of Indianapolis at the 2017 commencement ceremonies. Jim retired after 45 years teaching at the University. He lives in Indianapolis with his wife, Paula. They have three children, Katherine, Marta and Derek.

1970’s Dr. Michael Lane ’71 celebrated the 28th anniversary of starting his own company, Professional Association Management Service, headquartered in Springfield, Ill. Mike and his

wife, Darlene live in Springfield where two of their three daughters and their children live.

Their youngest daughter lives in New Jersey and is expecting their fourth grandchild.

He is also a member of the Jerseyville Rotary Club, has served in numerous local philanthropic organizations and has provided care to numerous individuals through the Donated Dental Services of Illinois. Dr. Houseman presently has a general dental practice in Jerseyville that was started by his late father Dr. J.H. Houseman in 1948. Fellowship in the College is by invitation and based on demonstrated leadership and contributions to the dental profession and society. Annita (Lane) Best ’85 celebrated retirement from the USMC after 30 years. She served as an aviation supply officer, protocol officer and public affairs officer while in the Marine Corps. She celebrated with friends and family at a New Year’s Eve event following her retirement ceremony Dec. 31, 2016. Annita lives with her husband Henry at Emerald Isle, NC. They have four children.

Maureen (Keller) Rucker ’78 is enjoying her time being completely retired after returning from a three-month trip to the Philippines to teach first grade. This year, 2017, is the first school year she has been completely retired. Mike Bloomgren ’99 was named the new head coach of Rice University’s football program in December. This most recent appointment adds on to his extensive coaching career after previously working for Standford University, New York Jets, Delta State University, Catawba College and University of Alabama football programs.

Prior to beginning his coaching career, Bloomgren played for Culver-Stockton College’s football team during the 1996-97 season as a tight end.

Kaylee Murphy ’21 is the third generation of her family to attend Culver-Stockton.

Michael Sweeney ’10 lives in Naperville, Ill. He attended the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law, where he was awarded

the CALI Excellence for the Future award and received the book award for being at the top of his class in the criminal trial clinic.

In 2013, Michael was awarded the clinical student of the year award for his efforts in defending indigent clients and obtaining favorable outcomes. He worked as a private attorney before joining the DuPage County Public Defender’s Office. He represents indigent defendants charged with criminal offenses. He has tried over 130 cases and was awarded attorney of the month in Feb. 2016.

In Oct. 2017, he was honored by the alliance against intoxicated motorists (AAIM).

Leanne (Cary) James ’12 and her husband, Cody live in Hurdland, Mo. She is a Billing Clerk for Tri-County Electric Cooperative in Lancaster, Mo. Dr. Slade Myers ’15 graduated from the U.S. Army’s Officer Candidate School and accepted a commission as a 2nd lieutenant.
