What an extraordinary year it has been at Culver-Stockton College. We had one of the largest commencement ceremonies in the history of the College. Charles Field House was standing room only as 233 students received their diplomas. And a very special moment occurred when President Emeritus Robert Brown presented his grandson with his diploma. The three thousand people in attendance acknowledged this moment with rousing applause.

Distinguished Alumnus and board trustee H.B Turner ’79 delivered the 162nd Commencement address compeling graduates to give as they had received.

The Class of 2018 is a very special group to me because so many of us began our journey together in the Fall of 2014. I was the newly appointed president and they were the newly enrolled freshmen. What a great privilege it’s been to watch them grow and learn inside and outside the classroom. 98% of our graduates go on to great career opportunities or enroll in graduate school. This outcome is directly related to the teaching and learning that occurs at Culver-Stockton.

In the following pages you will read about the seven pillars of Experiential Learning. This type of learning is effective and essential to prepare our students for a dynamic world. We believe so strongly in experiential learning that we have begun to nationally certify all of our faculty in this teaching method. In two short years we will be the only college or university in the country with 100% of our faculty certified by the National Society for Experiential Education (NSEE).

Service Learning is one of the seven pillars of Experiential Learning. We are excited to celebrate all the community service around the world in which our alumni engage. We encourage you to share your service project photos to help us promote the power of service to others.

In closing, I would like to say THANK YOU to our alumni and friends. Thank you for referring a student, for providing an internship opportunity, for making a gift to the annual student scholarship fund, for endowing a scholarship, for making a planned gift, for hosting an event, for mentoring a student, for supporting facility improvements and for coming back to “the Hill” to see all that’s been accomplished. We couldn’t do it without you.

C-SC Holds First Annual Day of Giving

Dr. Patrick Hotle Invited to Israel Conference

Culver-Stockton College held its first Annual Day of Giving on March 19, 2018. The Day of Giving coincided with Mary Culver’s birthday. The day kicked off with live updates from Chairman Ron Leftwich ’64 and concluded with a live variety show featuring music and videos showcasing C-SC students.

Dean Silber Heads to Piedmont College Dr. Dan Silber left Culver-Stockton College on June 29 to pursue an opportunity at another institution. Silber held the position of Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the College for six years. At Piedmont College, Silber will be the chief academic officer, responsible for the college’s four academic schools – Arts & Sciences, the Harry W. Walker School of Business, Education, and the R.H. Daniel School of Nursing & Health Sciences. We would like to thank Dr. Silber and his family for their time on “the Hill.” We wish them the best at Piedmont College.

Lauren Schellenberger, Ph.D., appointed Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the College Congratulations to Lauren Schellenberger, Ph.D., on her appointment as Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the College. Dr. Schellenberger joined the Culver-Stockton faculty in 2008 and has brought innovative ideas and knowledge of best practices to Culver-Stockton students and her colleagues. Now a tenured associate professor of biology, she served the College as Division Chair of Applied Liberal Arts and Sciences and previously as Division Chair of Natural and Mathematical Sciences.

Dr. Schellenberger began her duties on July 1.

Master of Athletic Training Summer 2019 Culver-Stockton College announces the start of our Master of Athletic Training program. The program will be different than the other graduate degrees offered on “the Hill,” as it will be the first on-campus graduate program. Applications will be accepted starting on September 1, 2018, with classes scheduled to start Summer 2019. To learn more visit culver.edu/mat.

Dr. Patrick Hotle attended a conference in January hosted by the University of Haifa in Israel entitled “The Latin East in the 13th Century: Institutions, Settlements and Material Culture.” It commemorated the 800th anniversary of the Fifth Crusade (1217-21). Hotle chaired a session entitled “Planning for Crusade and Crusading in the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Centuries.”

Culver-Stockton College’s Mock Trial Team Participates in National Tournament of American Mock Trial Association For the first time in its history, the Culver-Stockton College mock trial team earned a bid in the national tournament structure of the American Mock Trial Association (AMTA). The Wildcat mockers competed in the AMTA regional tournament in Topeka, Kansas, in February and earned a spot in nationals by finishing 5-3, tied for 7th place out of 24 teams. In March, the team traveled to Greenville, South Carolina, where they competed with notable schools from the east coast such as Duke University, Emory University and Georgetown University.

Culver-Stockton College fraternities and sororities participated in Greek week festivities the week of March 19. This years’ service project benefited 2X4’s for Hope, an organization that raises money for building supplies that are used to build and re-build homes that have been destroyed by natural disaster. C-SC Greek Life raised over $1,600 providing more than 500 2X4’s. The week also highlighted various feats of spirit and merit.

C-SC Theatre Attends KC/ACTF Region V Festival

C-SC Theatre was invited to perform a selected scene from their production of War is Coming, Ernie Pyle! at the KC/ ACTF Region V Festival in Des Moines, Iowa, in January. Austin Pyrtle, Hali Liles, Madison Landry, Annelise Burt, and Logan Walker all represented C-SC as Irene Ryan Acting Nominees. Brett Colton, Michaela Hane, and Matthew Scheuermann partnered the nominees.

C-SC Presents Bus Stop In February, the Culver-Stockton College Department of Theatre presented Bus Stop, performances served with a generous portion of romance, comedy and drama. Bus Stop, a comedy by William Inge, takes place at a roadside diner in a small Kansas town about 30 miles west of Kansas City. A snowstorm blocking all roads forces an inter-state bus to stop for the night. One by one, the stranded bus passengers as well as the local characters are introduced, each with their own quirks and conflicts. culver.edu 4

ACCOLADES C-SC Harmony Magazine Receives Recognition Culver-Stockton College received two second-place recognitions for its Literary & Arts Magazine, Harmony. The staff who participated in the 40th volume of the magazine received awards at the end of 2017.

C-SC Athletic Training Students Win 1st in MoATA Quiz Bowl Culver-Stockton College’s athletic training students traveled to Central Methodist University in February where they placed 1st in the 6th Annual Missouri Athletic Trainers’ Association Educators and Student Leadership Conference.

The team was comprised of Joshua Laird, Kirby McClain and Makkel Parrott. Maryanna Catrine served as an alternate while Laird also served as team captain.

Megaphone Wins 17 Awards at State Journalism Competition The student-run newspaper at Culver-Stockton College, The Megaphone, won 17 MCMA (Missouri College Media Association) awards for the 2017-18 academic year. The editor-in-chief was Laura Johnson and the managing editor was Maggie Houska.

Culver-Stockton College’s Schlegl Receives Top Score in Regional Mock Trial Tournament In February, Culver-Stockton College’s two mock trial teams attended a Regional Competition at Washburn University School of Law in Topeka, Kansas. Christine Schlegl, of Quincy, Illinois, captain of Team A, finished the competition with the top score (19 out of 20 points) in a field of over 80 “attorneys.”

Schlegl previously won Top Attorney with perfect scores of 20 at the Mid-Missouri Mock Trial Invitational at University of Columbia as well as the Dr. Donald P. Racheter Invitational Tournament at Central College in Pella, Iowa.

Culver-Stockton College’s Wood Named to the 2018 AVCA Men’s NAIA All-America First Team Culver-Stockton College middle hitter Ammuniki Wood was named to the 2018 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Men’s NAIA All-America First Team in April. Wood is the first All-America selection in the five-year history of the Wildcat men’s volleyball program.

He has been an All-Heart of America Athletic Conference first team selection the last two seasons.

Wood, a 6-foot-3 senior from Bridgetown, Barbados (Barbados CC), led the Heart and was fifth in the NAIA in total blocks with 109 this season. He led the Heart and was second in the NAIA with 1.15 blocks per set. Wood was fourth in the Heart in hitting percentage (.331), fourth in total kills (283) and seventh in kills per set (2.98). In addition, he had a career-high 123 digs and 15 service aces as a full rotation player this season.

In his three-year career, Wood amassed 769 kills, which ranks second on the school’s all-time list. He also has registered 352 total blocks (100 solo + 252 assists) and has averaged 1.12 blocks per set.

The selections were made by the AVCA NAIA Men’s Volleyball All-America Committee.

DONATIONS AT WORK Culver-Stockton College Receives Gift from Robert L. Glass Culver-Stockton College received a substantial gift of over $800,000 from Robert L. Glass, a 1952 graduate. Glass provided the gift to C-SC to assist minority and female students entering the field of technology and computing. Additionally, financial support will be provided for support of a faculty position in information technology and an endowment for information technology and computer equipment.

Johnson Esports Arena Thanks to the generous donation from Scott Johnson ’71, the Johnson Esports Arena launched at C-SC following the October announcement of the new esports program on campus. The arena is located in the Carolyn L. & Robert W. Brown Residence Hall and the room is equipped with gigabit internet connection as well as 12 workstations and other specialized gaming equipment such as a virtual reality machine.

The Marvin (Shorty) and Shirley (Nelson) Hinkle Endowed Scholarship The Marvin (Shorty) and Shirley (Nelson) Hinkle Endowed Scholarship was established for local Missouri students with campus involvement as an athlete or musician. Avid Wildcat fans, Shirley and the late Marvin Hinkle have demonstrated true support as fans of the College through involvement with student athletes, coaches and other fans by attending and supporting Culver-Stockton College athletic and music events.

Golf Simulator The simulator donated by Joe Schwan ’59 made significant advances to the golf program’s equipment at C-SC. The simulator allows the team to practice in between classes, at night while they’re on campus and over the winter months to help prepare for spring championship season. The golf simulator tracks things such as swing speed, launch angle, spin rate and distance. It is a key tool for golfers to see an in-depth analysis of their swing as they prepare for each course.

Mike Wall Gift C-SC received a generous gift from Mike Wall ’82.

Wall originally donated the equipment for the student-run radio station and KATZ 5 studios. This additional gift was allocated for enhancement and maintenance for these studios as well as other departmental needs.

Class of 2018 Senior Gift Culver-Stockton College’s class of 2018 raised over $3,300 toward their class gift.

The class gift will allow for six eco-friendly water fountains to be installed around campus.

These water fountains not only make filling a water bottle easier, but they also provide filtered water, are more sanitary and reduce water and plastic waste by allowing any container to be refillable on the go. The class gift was sponosred with a matching gift

ONE HUNDRED SIXTY SECOND ANNUAL

BY KATIE LIESEN ’16, MEDIA CONTENT SPECIALIST Culver-Stockton College celebrated the graduation of the Class of 2018 during the 162nd Annual Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, May 12, 2018. Degrees were conferred to 233 undergraduate and graduate students.

Dr. Kelly Thompson, president, was elated to celebrate the day with the graduates, family, friends and alumni. “As you all leave this campus to embark on the next stage of your lives, I know you are well prepared for it through your educational and social experiences at Culver-Stockton College. You have all had the opportunity to transform into thriving adults that will lead lives of purpose.”

Lucas Thomas ’18 of Aledo, Texas, was chosen to represent the Class of 2018. Thomas graduated with a Bachelor of History and minor in Digital Media. During his time at Culver-Stockton College, Thomas was very involved all around campus; he was a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity, Phi Beta Sigma honors fraternity and Phi Alpha Theta history fraternity. Thomas made his decision to come to Culver-Stockton mainly due to the school’s Disciples of Christ affiliation. After graduation, Thomas joined the C-SC admission team as an admission counselor.

“We must thank the fantastic alumni. Without your generous giving during our capital campaign, many of us would not have received the scholarships that made it possible for us to attend Culver-Stockton and attain our respective degrees,” Thomas said. “I urge all of you to think about this: What kind of alum will you be? Remember, we are always Wildcats. There were Wildcats before us and there will be Wildcats after we leave. Support your fellow Wildcats, as they have done the same for you.”

H.B. Turner ’79 of Parkville, Missouri, was the keynote speaker. Turner is the primary owner and Chairman of Peachtree Lighting, a manufacturer of LED lighting fixtures sold to commercial and industrial specification markets throughout the

USA and internationally. Turner is also the retired President and CEO of Heatron Inc. which serves over 30 market segments, the largest being key components for medical devices such as sleep apnea and kidney dialysis machines. As a member of the CulverStockton College Board of Trustees, he serves as Board Treasurer and member of the Executive Committee. Turner has been a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha Housing Corporation Board of Directors and Culver-Stockton College’s Kappa Mu Zeta chapter since 1980.

An enthusiastic supporter and alumnus of C-SC, Turner focused his address on the importance of giving back to the College. During his time as a student, he recognized the support he received from faculty, staff, alumni and fellow classmates.

Because of this, Turner is a strong advocate for giving back your time and talents to causes you believe in.

“You don’t need to be a billionaire to give back either your time or your money,” Turner explained. “For most of you, your education on ‘the Hill’ was subsidized by others donating funds for student scholarships. When you start to make a few dollars, save some to give back to Culver-Stockton, as well as to the other causes you believe in, just as others have done for you. You will find a cheerful spirit of giving fills your life beyond measure.

Class, the more you stretch your giving, the more you will receive in return.”

As the Class of 2018 begins the next chapter in their lives, they’ll remember all the people at C-SC who helped make them who they are today. Thanks to the College’s accommodating and knowledgeable faculty and staff, generous donors and supportive alumni, this year’s class is ready to take on any challenge. Like the graduates before them, the graduates of 2018 can go into the world knowing they are forever Wildcats and will forever have a home on “the Hill.”

RESEARCH Graduate-level research is available to C-SC students as early as freshman year. In the past, students have even had the option to complete genomics work with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Research is essential to a student’s growth and critical thinking abilities. These opportunities challenge students and allow them to explore subjects they otherwise would never have been able to study. Research is fundamental in many educational and professional fields and at C-SC students can be sure their research skills will be tested and improved.

Sulaiman Qanni ’20, a biological chemistry major from Jordan, came to Culver-Stockton College in 2016. At C-SC, Qanni has been very busy as the President of HOPE (Health Outreach Peer Educators) and Vice President of the International Student Ambassadors. When Qanni took a research course with C-SC biology professor, Dr. Mohamed El-Bermawy, he would often get frustrated when his research wasn’t yielding results. From Dr. El-Bermawy, Qanni learned that research in the lab requires patience and stoicism. You have to be optimistic about your research and take the experiential portion of the experiment as a valuable result. “There are no guarantees that your research will be

fruitful, but it will always be worth your while,” Qanni explained.

Through numerous trials during the experiments, he was able to gain the skills needed to pick up and learn new subjects quickly.

From his research class he learned to be comfortable with making mistakes and thinking outside the box to remedy them. The most important thing he learned was to slow down, be patient and experience more while he pushes the boundaries of his studies.

“When doing research, I’ve learned what’s most important in order to yield the best results,” Qanni explained. “You must be patient, calm, stoic and most importantly, optimistic.” culver.edu 10

ACADEMIC AFFAIRS Students at Culver-Stockton College learn the importance of improving the world around them through service learning. Service learning at C-SC starts the first week of school with the annual Extreme Dome Makeover and continues on through many other significant projects. Students leave an impact on Canton through their service learning and enter the world beyond the College as adults, ready to get involved in their communities. When students of Culver-Stockton College leave “the Hill,” they continue to make a difference wherever their futures lead them. At larger institutions, it may be more difficult to gauge results from a service project.

Within C-SCs system of Service Learning however, every individual’s contribution counts, and makes for a more meaningful experience.

SERVICE LEARNING Madison Lawless ’21 is a nursing major from Silex, Missouri, who is very involved on campus. During her countless hours in the nursing program, she formed personal relationships with her professors who were easily accessible and willing to help her with whatever she needed. Through the opportunities provided to her through CulverStockton College’s First Year Experience (FYE) course, Lawless, a member of the Chi Omega Sorority, was able to use her time and talents to help others. Lawless was inspired to take part in assisting the Lewis County Food Pantry, volunteer at the Lewis Street Playhouse and participate in other service projects around Canton. Lawless has strong ties with the Rotary club, as her mother is a long-time member and volunteer. “The service learning I have done at Culver-Stockton helped broaden my horizons to try new things and really be involved in a community,” Lawless explained. “Service is something I will enjoy doing my whole life.”

Daniel Smith ’18 is an accountancy and finance major from Victoria, Illinois. During Smith’s four years at Culver-Stockton College, he joined the baseball team, worked on The Megaphone newspaper and was an IMA (Institute of Management Accountants) member. While keeping busy with all his extracurriculars, he also managed to have several internships. “Having a required internship is good. It motivates you to get out there and get relevant experience in your field,” Smith explained. Because of the 12/3 calendar, Smith had no problem balancing his course load. In the future, Smith plans on becoming a certified public accountant. After completing an internship at Gardner-Denver in Quincy, Illinois, Smith was invited to work part time while working toward graduating from the College. Smith believes his professors being so accommodating of his internship and sports travel are what helped push him to work hard and be successful. “The experience I’ve gained from C-SC and my internship will benefit me greatly in my future job,” Smith said.

Students at C-SC are encouraged to pursue unique projects tailored to their personal interests. C-SC students can even create their own majors. Through C-SC’s flexible and immersive curriculum, students are able to thoroughly involve themselves in their studies and are free to express themselves creatively.

Many students convey how many different areas of study they are able to explore during their four years at C-SC. A well-rounded student with knowledge of multiple disciplines is the mark of a Culver-Stockton graduate.

Since coming to C-SC in 2015, Hali Liles ’19, a musical theatre major from Mountain View, Missouri, has been involved in a multitude of on-campus experiences. She has tried archery, fencing, acting, costume design and singing, among other activities. Liles was given opportunities to be an assistant producer, create costumes for shows on campus and even act as lead roles in C-SC productions. During the spring semester, Liles was invited to a regional theatre festival to have her costume designs showcased. She feels that the real world experience she gained from her classes will help her in her future goals of performing on Broadway.

Because of all her supportive professors, Liles was pleased to say she is now confident to try new things. “Culver-Stockton really has learning down to a science,” Liles expressed. “Every class I take, professors are accommodating and they make full use of important teachable moments.

Classes here are memorable.” Liles feels like the smaller class size and the emphasis on hands-on learning in a variety of subjects makes for a more intimate classroom feeling. “I prefer what we have here compared to what you think of as a normal college course where you’re sitting in a lecture hall and the professor is just going on and on.” Liles also appreciates the twelve week-three week calendar that Culver-Stockton employs. She likes being able to focus on one subject for three weeks and get the most out of it, especially if it’s something more creative. For Liles, being able to express herself creatively semester after semester is what makes studying at C-SC so special.

Culver-Stockton College takes learning out of the classroom and into the world. During the 3-week term, students can travel with their whole class, including professors, and not worry about any other classes. For many students it is the first time they are able to experience travel outside of the country. In an increasingly global society, being able to experience a multitude of different cultures and backgrounds is vital for personal and professional development. CulverStockton College goes above and beyond to offer these formative travel experiences to their students.

TRAVEL STUDY Skyla Risner ’19 of St. James, Missouri, is a senior psychology and occupational therapy major at Culver-Stockton College, and thus far, she has taken full advantage of the travel opportunities that C-SC provides. When deciding what college to attend, C-SC’s unique schedule and support for travel abroad were instrumental in her decision making. “The main reason I came to Culver-Stockton was because of the 12/3 calendar,” Risner explained. “The 3 week provides so many opportunities to travel, which is one of the main things I wanted to do during my college years.” So far in her college career, Risner has traveled to China in spring of 2016, Belize and Guatemala in the fall of 2016 and Peru in spring of 2017.

Risner plans on taking what she learned about traveling at C-SC and applying it to her own professional life. Risner brought this experience with her as she traveled to Ecuador for an internship during the summer of 2018. The time spent abroad will be valuable to her as in her future professional career. Risner hopes to live and work in Latin America.

Culver-Stockton’s travel study programs have certainly set Risner up for success in that field. “This school gives you so many opportunities for scholarships that by your senior year, you can afford a trip somewhere and have it paid for,” Risner said. “This is really the best time to go on that kind of experiential trip before you start having to worry about student loans or a career. I’m thankful that Culver-Stockton is so supportive of travel.”

LEADERSHIP With more than 50 student organizations, eight Greek organizations and 17 varsity sports, the C-SC student population has plenty of opportunities to lead. Students even have the opportunity to be involved with student government which is part of representing students’ best interests during important decisions on campus.

Because all these organizations’ governing bodies are formed solely of students, leaders of these groups can help one truly get a sense of how important leadership is when trying to keep the organizations productive and exciting. However, C-SC teaches that leadership is not only about having a title or position of power.

Anna Stock ’19 is a biological chemistry and pre-med major from Quincy, Illinois. During her time at C-SC, Stock has taken leadership roles on campus which led to tremendous personal growth. Stock was a captain of the volleyball team, a member of the Sigma Sigma Sigma (Tri-Sigma) board, and vice president of Alpha-Pi. She also took part in leadership courses which only strengthened the foundation she had already gained from CulverStockton College. She learned to lead through respect. Stock believes that leadership is a lifestyle. A leader does not need to be a dictator, or even have a role of power. During the 3-week class period, she learned some real life skills such as travel and money exchange during her trips to London and Ireland. She also took the opportunity to get closer to her professors. “It’s been so inspiring to see my professors so respectful of students, despite them being in a position of leadership. They were so polite and understanding and it set a great example for all of us students.”

As a pre-med student with aspirations in the medical field, she is grateful that she will be able to apply the skills she has learned at C-SC to her professional career. “Something I’ve learned about leadership here is that it’s not the role that you’re in, it’s the effort you make reaching out to people around you, and being someone that people can look up to, even when you’re not intending to display leadership, you can exert the qualities that make you a leader and a role model. The best leaders are the ones who are not seeking out a title.”

SIMULATIONS At Culver-Stockton College, simulations are essential to providing real-world experience that can be used even after graduation. C-SC recreates realistic situations under controlled environments for students to learn by experiencing.

Examples of this include the nursing simulation lab, historic role-playing activities and even virtual business management simulations. Usually, students best remember the experiences they have in these simulation-style courses. More so than lectures, these simulations can be memorable and valuable learning tools of teaching.

In 2010, Lisa (Button) Bohan ’14 MBA ’18, an accountancy and finance major of Adel, Iowa, started at Culver-Stockton College. While on “the Hill,” she met a lot of her current best friends as well as the man who became her husband, Dalton Bohan ’11 MBA ’18. At C-SC, Bohan was involved in numerous campus activities. Theater, IMA, volunteer trips and national and international study trips were all a part of what made Bohan’s time at C-SC so meaningful. During college, Bohan participated in numerous simulations that gave her an edge in her future endeavors. She was prepped for both professional and personal financial situations. These included experiential learning simulations in filing taxes, running a business with fellow classmates and meeting business professionals in Chicago.

By the end of her four years at C-SC, Bohan learned to be very

conscientious with her work and to document everything. After graduating from C-SC, Bohan got married, became a staff accountant at Dot Foods in Mount Sterling, Illinois, and joined her husband in pursuing her masters degree online through Culver-Stockton College. In 2018, Lisa and Dalton Bohan completed their masters. Bohan fondly remembers the great connections she made at C-SC “I was able to get really close with my professors, and those relationships still mean a lot,” Bohan said. Bohan was also profoundly affected by all of the alumni and donors who supported her through her college years. “I just want to tell everyone that every penny counts, I really want to keep giving back so that other students can have great experiences like I did,” Bohan explained. “I have so much to be thankful for at C-SC.” culver.edu 16

During the Japanese travel study course in May 2018 students gained a broad overview of Japanese culture and society including the study of Japanese history, religion, ethics, legal systems and environmental practices. They examined the impact of postwar social, economic and political changes on Japanese society and experienced Japan as it exists today.

The course aimed at giving students the analytical tools with which to evaluate assumptions about cultural differences that inform a wide variety of opinions and misperceptions. A central theme of the course was to compare contemporary Japanese and American cultures as it relates to the aforementioned areas of study. Here are some collected journals of their experiences.

DAY 3 Himeji was different from Osaka in that it was less of a city and more of a community spiraled around the centerpoint castle. The houses were quaint and homey, they looked inviting and open despite being so close together. The castle was a literal highlight.

It stood against the velvet trees brightly, it’s white walls making it visible even miles away. The flowers and beauty around the castle were whimsical and fresh, allowing the breeze to flow like the many travelers climbing to the top of the castle. Despite its soaring heights, the castle did not take long to climb. The steep steps made of golden wood were useful, despite making anyone in socks prone to slipping and sliding about. The low ceilings were also an obstacle to anyone over 5'5", but it made the trip interesting for sure. Each open window looked out over the lush gardens surrounding the castle, with the Himeji skyline in the distance reminding us that we were still in modern times. The fresh air that seeped from said windows was refreshing amongst the crowded halls of tourists and school students. Leaving the beautiful Himeji was made easy with the aid of ice cream. And then we were off, packed back into the Pikachu bus and made to entertain ourselves again until we reached our next destination.

DAY 4 “Please rest in peace, for we shall not repeat the error.”

This text is one of many found in Hiroshima Memorial Park. It sits next to a horseshoe shaped memorial that houses a chamber with the names of all who have passed away directly or indirectly from the A-Bomb strike. As of now, there are almost 300,000 names interred.

If you look through the horseshoe, you will see two things: a flame mounted in a sculpture and the shell of an old building.

The fire will burn until nuclear weapons are no more. The sculpture itself is in the shape of cradled hands, representing the humanity at the center of this issue. The old building somehow survived the initial blast, which was only a few hundred meters away.

A short walk the other direction will take you to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum.

There you can observe clothes, tools and other objects that survived the blast. You can stand in a spot that was engulfed in a column of radioactive fire, subjected to unnaturally powerful winds and force.

Finally, when you walk back to that horseshoe shaped memorial and look through it, to the Eternal Flame and the old building shell, it all makes sense.

OF DAY 7 We started our travels by going to a beautiful castle.

The first thing I noticed were the fish popping out of the water asking for food. We walked through the entrance and the walls were a beautiful shade of white. The first thing we saw was a bunch of monkeys hanging out in a cage. Then we went and threw classic throwing stars. I hit close to the center, but only one from our group hit the center.

Next we headed to our cruise near Mount Fuji. The mountain looked amazing and had beautiful white snow on top. We rode a box car up the side of a mountain and went to a shrine at the top. The view was incredible and you could see all of Mount Fuji from the top.

Then we headed to our hotel for the night for a traditional kimono dinner. First my fraternity brothers and me went to the bath house. After that we went back and got ready for dinner.

The food was incredible and tasted amazing.

DAY 10 We were headed to a shopping mall in Odaiba, which we had already visited and even though not everyone can spend four hours at a mall, Alec and I tend to wander around and just take things in, rather than looking for the best “sale.” We had stumbled onto a meat festival that was occurring, just a few blocks away from the mall and decided to see what all of the hype was about, and let me tell you, it was something that we don’t experience in Canton or even my home town. Unlike a lot of the festivals that I am used to attending, they had an enormous amount of people meeting new people and making friends, plenty of food booths and two live concerts that were occurring just a few hundred feet within themselves. Nothing seemed to be too much, but just enough that everyone could enjoy, and no one was judging others for how they danced or what they were enjoying. Everything about that day, just seemed to be peaceful and relaxing in the best of ways. Japan is truly a country that everyone can find their own little corner of the world and find true happiness, no matter what they like, someone will always be there enjoying the same things that you do.

I’ve been listening and looking for the echo of our friend, Josh Houchins ’04, since the day he passed. He was a staple on the radio waves every morning for thousands of listeners in the greater Quincy area. A passion for sports and radio, which was cultivated on “the Hill,” could be heard every day. His loyalty to Culver-Stockton was paralleled by few and you would often spot him in his C-SC ball cap. Many recall the way he made us laugh and forget about the realities of the world to discuss sports. But now that his physical presence is gone, where can we find him and what is his legacy? What can we do to remember him?

It’s important for those of you who didn’t get the chance to meet Josh to know that he was paralyzed after an accident when he was 15 years old. It would be easy for a person to become cynical after facing such hardships at a young age. But instead, the way Josh lived life was full of passion, enthusiasm and kindness. His positive attitude on a daily basis and his neverending amount of happiness are truly what seemed to define him. No day seemed to stop him from having a good time.

What was Josh like here at C-SC? When talking about his longtime friend, current Head Women’s Soccer Coach, Tyler Tomlinson ’03 remarked, “Josh and I developed quite a friendship in class at C-SC. He was open, honest and personable from the moment we met. We were both involved with KCSW Radio and Josh was the Public Address announcer for home basketball games. He was an avid Wildcats fan for all athletics. Everything he did at CulverStockton followed him into the workforce and made him who he was. And he was a fantastic human being.”

Carol Mathieson and you will find that Josh was not all sports.

He was a member of the choir who according to Mathieson, “loved to have fun with other students by running over their toes with his wheelchair.” As a student in the communication program at C-SC, Josh hosted radio shows and was able to hone his craft.

After graduation he worked for the Quincy Herald-Whig as an ad sales rep, later moving over to WGEM-FM where he would become the host of WGEM SportsCenter. Let us also not forget he was a true professional and was recently recognized this year for two state awards in radio, winning the Illinois Broadcasters Association Silver Dome Award for Best Radio Personality in a Medium Market and the Best Small Market Radio Air Talent by the Missouri Broadcasters Association.

You could tell that C-SC left an impression on him, but more importantly he left a mark with so many others. The SportsCenter show is centered around Tri-State area high school athletes. Josh was always about putting the prep athletes first and making sure they were highlighted. Many of the prep athletes went on to have successful college careers and a few professional careers.

Shortly after his death in October 2017, a former prep athlete who had developed a relationship with Josh wanted to make sure that the generations to come would remember his name. His idea was to endow the Josh Houchins Scholarship creating a permanent echo that will carry Josh’s legacy for years to come. Many of us will never forget Josh Houchins, and now future generations will remember him as well. His name will mean something to many of the same kind of students he spent his life promoting, which is a true testament to the character of Josh Houchins.

BY JOHN SCHILD, SPORTS INFORMATION DIRECTOR Steve Willett ’86, Cathy Shoup ’96, Dan Buelt ’02 and the 1993-94 women’s basketball team were enshrined into the Culver-Stockton College Athletic Hall of Fame during the CulverStockton College Hall of Fame Banquet on April 28.

Willett, a native of Kailua, Hawaii, was a two-year member of the Wildcat football team. A 6-foot-4, 235-pound tight end, Willett was named to the All-Heart of America Athletic Conference first team in 1985 after leading the league with 38 receptions. He totaled 470 yards and scored five touchdowns.

For his efforts, Willett was also named to the all-district first team and the NAIA All-America first team, becoming the second Wildcat football player to earn that honor. Off the field, Willett majored in administration of justice and was named an NAIA Scholar-Athlete and a GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-American.

Shoup, a native of Carthage, Illinois, was a four-year member of the women’s basketball team from 1992-96. A 5-foot-5 guard, Shoup appeared in 129 career games, making 111 starts. She was the second player in school history to score 1,000 points and dish out 500 assists, finishing with 1,075 career points and 567 assists.

When Shoup graduated, she was ninth on the school’s all-time scoring list (currently 15th) and second on the all-time assists list.

Shoup is third on the school’s career steals list with 304, sixth on the all-time list with 318 free throws made, and third on the list with 133 3-point field goals.

In addition to her career marks, Shoup holds the school’s single season record for assists with 186, is fourth with 100 steals and ninth with 122 free throws made. Shoup was a three-time allconference player, including twice being named to the first team.

In 1996, she was named to the NAIA Division II All-America team as a second team selection.

Buelt, a native of Warsaw, Ill., was a four-year letter-winner in men’s basketball from 1998-02. A 5-foot-11 inch guard, Buelt was twice named to the all-conference first team, including in 2001 when he led the league in free throw percentage (89.5 percent) and 3-point field goal percentage (45.7 percent).

When Buelt graduated, he was ranked 11th on the school’s all-time scoring list with 1,383 points (currently 13th). He is also the career record-holder for assists (527) and second in free throws made (475). Among single season records, Buelt is second and third with 176 and 142 free throws made, respectively, and fourth in assists with 165. He was named to the NAIA Division II AllAmerica team as an honorable mention selection in 2001.

The 1993-94 women’s basketball team was perhaps the most talented on the many storied teams that have made up the women’s program at Culver-Stockton College. Coached by C-SC Hall of Famer Kathy Turpin and led by Hall of Famer Linda Logsdon, the Wildcats set a school record with 29 victories (against four losses) and captured the Heart of America Athletic Conference championship with a 15-1 league mark. The .879 winning percentage is the second-best in team history behind the 1983-84 team that recorded a .900 winning percentage (27-3).

The 1993-94 team still holds school records for points scored (2,695), highest scoring average (81.7), most steals (499), and most blocks (139). The Wildcats also hold the school record for most consecutive games won to begin a season with 13.

On March 3, a minivan loaded with Culver-Stockton students and one chaplain plus a week’s worth of luggage hit the road heading to Beaumont, Texas, for the Spring Break Service Trip course. When we embarked on our journey, most of us didn’t know each other well. However, with the help of Dr. David Carrothers, Senior Lecturer in Criminal Justice at C-SC, it didn’t take long until we became family. I knew I was in good company when the first day’s drive flew by with music and laughs.

When we arrived in Beaumont, we were greeted by Operation Blessing and Community Collaborations who had partnered together after Hurricane Harvey had devastated the area in early September of 2017. They have been there ever since. The areas that had been impacted by the hurricanes in the fall were some of

the most popular locations for spring break. We were one of about fifteen college groups staying at that location for the week. It was packed. We slept on cots in large rooms filled with strangers, used showers installed into trailers and we worked! Some days the labor was intense. Regardless of what the job was, the students jumped in and tackled it knowing that no matter how small the job seemed, it was making a big impact on the people whose homes we were visiting.

The first afternoon, when the rains kept us from completing our task, Drew from Community Collaborations stopped by and gave us a new assignment. Our first job, he said, was to “Love Janet.” Our second job was to tear down a doghouse which Janet believed had assisted some neighbors in breaking into her residence. When we got there, it was clear there was something deeper going on with Janet. However, we had been given two jobs and we were going to try to finish them both. The doghouse came down with the right tools and blunt force. The first task was a little more difficult. None of us were exactly sure how to take care of Janet in that moment. I stood with her for a while as she watched the doghouse come down.

Then she invited us to sit on her front porch. A little unsure of what to do, the students and I joined her on that tiny front porch and we listened. She was grieving the destruction that had occurred in her home and the sense of security had been taken away again.

It was just Janet and her dogs, as well as the thoughts that plagued her. That is why we were told our number one task was to love her. Drew knew that Janet was experiencing something more than tearing down a

doghouse could fix. She needed more than what we could give her in that moment. However, our hope is that we left Janet with a sense of relief for that moment as she worked into a “new normal” after Harvey. In all the work we did that week, it seems the time spent with Janet had the biggest impact. That 45 minutes of time we spent at Janet’s took days to unpack and we continued the conversation many days after we returned to campus.

I HOPE IN THAT MOMENT WE WERE ABLE TO GIVE JANET A LITTLE PIECE OF MIND, BUT I KNOW FOR CERTAIN THAT JANET WILL LIVE IN MY MEMORY FOR A LONG TIME TO COME.

Service work is always twofold. We often believe that we are going to be the ones who help and make a difference in someone else’s life, but in reality, we often learn more and are changed by the people we meet and the work we do. I hope in that moment we were able to give Janet a little peace of mind, but I know for certain that Janet will live in my memory for a long time to come.

I was so proud of the students and their kindness and love they shared, even when they didn’t completely understand Janet.

One of the things we really focused on in recent years at

Culver-Stockton College is service learning. We encourage our students to give back to the community and work to make the world around them better. We want our students to help their communities thrive, be engaged and take civic responsibilities seriously. As the chaplain at C-SC, I want students to understand that we are all connected. You, the students, Janet and I are inextricably linked. We are meant to care for one another if we ever want to make the world whole. With each new person we meet, work with and listen to, we also grow as individuals in our empathy and understanding.

We want the same for you, as our alumni. We hope that you will continue the C-SC legacy that we are working toward in giving back to the communities wherever you are and wherever you go. In the last Chronicle, we shared that the Extreme Dome Makeover was getting a makeover, too. We have broadened that event from a day of service to a continuous effort to keep working toward making our communities whole. We will start the first-year students’ experience by going into the Canton community. However, we will continue to participate in service projects all year round under the umbrella of “Everyone Doing More,” the “new” EDM. We believe that service is not just a one-time effort. Service is a continuous way of engaging in the broader community.

Anytime as alumni you go out to serve your community, we want to know about it. Send us pictures! We want to know about the work you do, no matter how small it may seem. Maybe your community needs someone to serve at the local shelter, read books to children or paint a house. Or perhaps, there is a Janet in your community who simply needs a little bit of love. Maybe it was your parents, a teacher, a coach, fraternity/sorority sister/brother, classmate, faculty advisor, housekeeper, cook, scholarship donor or so many others. You can always remember someone that gave you good advice or provided assistance along the way. Always say thank you to that person, it is never too late to do so.

My favorite memory of C-SC is…

Surely not my favorite, but most vivid memory is of the tornado in 2003. Just hours after graduation the field house was leveled and so many trees were destroyed.

There were also the floods, when the College opened its doors and assisted the community. Graduation is such a special time each year and memorable in so many ways. Perhaps the most favorite memories would be the incredible talent of the students—academically, athletically, musically and theatrically.

BY ALEC BOREN ’18 Over time, we have had to answer many questions about Culver-Stockton College. “Where is Canton?” “Isn’t Culver the place that sells butter burgers?” If you are like me, you take this opportunity to proudly talk about our home. Yes, we are a small school. Yes, we live in a small town. Yes, we do love a quality butter burger, but we all know that nothing beats a 2 a.m.

Steak ‘n Shake run.

The funny thing about Culver-Stockton College is that once the school enters your life in a major way, it stays there for the rest of your life. Sometimes, though, you don’t know it is there.

I grew up on Culver-Stockton’s campus. My mom, Carla Boren ’83, worked as the director of Financial Aid here when I was very young. I remember going to the arcade next to the Cat’s Pause, which is long gone, and I remember having the coolest babysitters who were students on “the Hill” at the time.

In 2011, my brother, Derek Boren ’15, became a Wildcat, as he came to C-SC to pursue a degree in Music. My cousins, Brittany (Douglas) Bearden ’94 and Brad Bearden ’92, were also alumni of the College.

C-SC will always be our home. There is something about “the Hill” that is magnetic. Maybe it’s the friends we made here.

Maybe it’s the friendships and professional relationships we made with our wonderful staff and faculty at the College. It could also be some of the little things here: Donuts with the Dean, never knowing what Doc Tom and Dr. Hollinger are going to put in Camerata concerts, lining the hillside with chairs during football games, rushing to get those last few A.C.E. credits before graduation, or maybe it’s just the satisfaction of knowing that we got everything out of this campus that we put into it.

What I do know is that Culver-Stockton College will be a home for me for the rest of my life. My friends here on “the Hill” will be my friends for the rest of my life. The lessons I learned from my professors will stay with me the rest of my life. The long nights with our noses in our textbooks and some nights that were a little more fun will stay with me for the rest of my life.

There’s something pretty neat about being a graduate of Culver-Stockton College: No matter where you end up or how long you are gone, you will always be able to find your way home. culver.edu 26

BY KATIE LIESEN, MEDIA CONTENT SPECIALIST As a young kid growing up in rural Illinois, Tim Fischer ’89 dreamed of big things. After years of working in corporate America, living all over the United States, traveling the world, having an office in Times Square and ringing the closing bell at Nasdaq, his life has been anything but ordinary. From a small town boy to a corporate executive, Fischer credits Culver-Stockton College for helping shape him into the man he is today.

Fischer graduated from Pittsfield High School, about 45 minutes southeast of Quincy and says that he wouldn’t have wanted to grow up anywhere else. Growing up, he enjoyed playing basketball and dreamed of playing for the Boston Celtics.

After high school, Fischer was recruited by many schools around the country but was determined to use basketball to allow him to get a great education. He was recruited by the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs and decided to pursue this opportunity although he knew it was highly competitive to get into the academy. However, he was thrilled when he received the 27 Chronicle, Summer 2018

Fischer quickly realized the Air Force Academy was not a “normal” college. His priorities on a daily basis were: military training, academics and Division 1 basketball…in that order.

Spending 11 weeks in basic training, then waking up at 5 a.m. every morning for the first year to clean the toilets, getting yelled at non-stop and living the life of a first-year cadet was definitely a learning experience. Fischer was challenged from a mental and physical standpoint on a daily basis, and although he was only 17 when he entered the academy, he grew up quickly.

After attending the academy for two years, Fischer had to make the decision to stay and finish his final two years (plus serve seven years active duty) or leave and pursue a different path. Standing 6 foot 7 and having terrible eyesight ruled out being a pilot. Because he didn’t fit in a plane and couldn’t see, he looked at his other options and decided to leave the academy after putting up with

POST GRAD the most difficult two years. “It was one of the toughest decisions of my life,” Fischer remembered.

Once he decided to transfer, many schools offered him a scholarship to go and play basketball for them. Fischer was intrigued by the opportunity to join up with a bunch of guys he had played against while in Pittsfield. He knew the players who were at Culver-Stockton College and thought it was a great group who were from local small towns like himself; the opportunity to team up with them was a big draw for Fischer when he picked Culver-Stockton. However, what really drew Fischer to C-SC was the family atmosphere that he felt when visiting campus. “I know it’s really cliché, but it’s true,” he chuckled.

Fischer thoroughly enjoyed his two years at C-SC. He loved his time with his new teammates, made many life-long friends and majored in business. To Fischer, the best part of C-SC was the faculty and staff. He was amazed at their true desire to help everyone grow as a person as well as a student. He specifically named Professor Jim Cosgrove and Dr. Robert and Carolyn Brown as people who made significant impacts on his life while at C-SC. “I’m a big fan of Professor Cosgrove,” Fischer commented. “He really taught me a lot about business inside the classroom but more importantly outside the classroom on how to be a young man of substance as opposed to the person I probably was at that time in my life. He helped me grow as a young man, not just a business student.”

Fischer also had the opportunity to build a great relationship with Dr. Brown and his wife, Carolyn. “Dr. Brown really exemplifies what a President of a small college should be. He and Carolyn were such a great team,” Fischer explained. “They were both involved and got to know the students well. They really made an impact on my life.”

After graduating from C-SC, Fischer worked at a bank for a year but didn’t end up enjoying it. He decided to look for a new opportunity and interviewed for an admissions job back on “the Hill.” One of the people who interviewed him was Jane Walden, and Fischer vividly remembers thinking during that interview that he knew he “was going to marry this beautiful woman.” Two months after he started in the Admission Office, he and Jane were looking at rings and they were engaged and married soon after. Fischer credits meeting Ms. Walden in Henderson Hall as a changing point in his life.

After leaving the Admissions office, Fischer took a job back in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He loved the area and still had many friends there from his time at the academy. From there, Tim and Jane moved all over the country as Fischer accepted increasingly more responsibility in the corporate world. They had two sons, one of which attends C-SC, and enjoyed living in different areas of the country. Fischer was extremely successful in the business world, resulting in him selling two companies. After selling his second company to a Brazilian firm, Fischer took a role working in Times Square in New York City. However, he continued living

outside of Philadelphia so his youngest son could finish high school. Having an apartment and living in Manhattan for two years was an incredible experience for this small town boy. He enjoyed finishing work and catching a Broadway show, going across the street to a Knicks game in Madison Square Garden and doing a variety of other things in the city that never sleeps. “There are lots of things you see in Times Square and New York that you don’t see in Pittsfield or Canton. To say it’s a different world is an understatement,” Fischer said.

Fischer’s success is rooted in his belief that you should help others. Culver-Stockton College was a huge factor in teaching him this lesson and forming his values. As a proud alumnus, parent of a current men’s basketball Wildcat and a member of the C-SC Board of Trustees, he wants to give back to the College. In the summer of 2018, Fischer invited four C-SC students to work at his company outside of Atlanta, Georgia, and also invited them to live in the Fischer house for the summer. When searching for interns, he felt he wasn’t going to find anyone better than students from Culver-Stockton, and that proved to be the case.

“I think it’s really important to give back to the College any way I can. Students at C-SC need to dream big and realize they can do whatever they set their minds to,” Fischer explained. “If a small town guy like me from Pittsfield, Illinois, can ring the closing bell at Nasdaq, so can they.” Fischer is very impressed with the group he brought in as interns. “If these students are an example of the product we’re putting out at Culver-Stockton, I want to invest in that.”

CLASS NOTES From Dam Walker to Faculty Member Larry Cornwell ’63 reminisced about his career path at Culver-Stockton with the following: I was one of the “Dam Walkers” at Culver-Stockton College during the ’60s.

I joined Ron Waning and Gary Hemming in 1960 until it was stopped by the Berlin Crisis of 1961. On a typical school day we would car pool to the Illinois side of the Lock and Dam No. 20, walk the mile across the dam, take one of our cars up “the Hill” for classes and reverse those steps to return home that afternoon.

1950’s Paul Morey ’50 and his wife, Peggy, live in Quincy, Ill. Paul is a retired general director of personnel for the Union Pacific Railroad and also retired lieutenant colonel for the U.S. Army Reserve (30 years).

Murray Akers, Sr. ’51 fell in February and broke his ankle. He had to wear a cast for six weeks. He said, “Fun things happen to you when you’re ninety!” Murray lives in Wickliffe, Ky.

At the beginning of my junior year the dam walkers had a rude awakening. Because of the Berlin Crisis the Lock Masker asked for the key back. We could not use the dam for crossing anymore. Our only alternatives were to cross on the ferry or drive around to C-SC through Quincy, Illinois (a 100 mile round trip). Back in those days gasoline was cheap and we decided to drive around.

Bob Glass ’52 and his wife, Iris, live in Brisbane Australia. Bob recently celebrated his 86th birthday with a trip to Taco Bell (there is only one in the whole state of Queensland, so there was quite a crowd waiting in line).

Another birthday party was celebrating there (mostly four-year olds) and Bob and Iris enjoyed meeting a much younger group celebrating a birthday milestone.

I graduated in 1963 and married Sara Finke. We both enrolled at Southern Illinois University. Sara finished her undergraduate degree in education and I completed my master’s degree in math education.

Jeanelle (Nelson) Hendrix ’52 has a new great granddaughter, Haley Ann Hoepf, born Augusut 26, 2017 to Jill and Matt Hoepf. Jim and Terri (Hendrix) Jungers ’82 are grandparents.

In 1966 I returned to C-SC as an Assistant Professor of Mathematics. I was in the old office of my favorite professor, Edgar Franz.

I also shared that office with my former chemistry professor, John Brodmann. I was surprised to see that I was not the only ’63 graduate back on campus. Tom Wiltshire and David Predmore were new faculty and Kurt Hoffman was Dean of Men. Tom’s wife, Cindy, and Kurt’s wife, Linda, were also graduates. That first year I had problems at the book store. I had asked the store manager for a desk copy of one of my text books and was refused because I did not appear old enough to be a faculty member.

I completed my PhD in Mathematics in 1971 and had to make a difficult decision about where I was going to teach that next academic year. My decision was to accept a position at Western Illinois University as an Assistant Professor in Mathematics. I taught there for nine years before completing the next twenty-five at Bradley University where I retired as Emeritus faculty. My wife and I now live in Prescott, Ariz.

Craig Ritz ’69 has finally retired after 45 years of college teaching. He will become a ski bum this winter and start building some wood-stripe canoes. She serves as the president of the American Women’s Club of Brussels and represents American and Belgian interests at the local and international federation level. Sue is presently finishing work on her second cookbook and hopes it will be done late spring. Murray was recently a guest speaker at the European Commission’s Security Conference. He pastors a small, international congregation representing 30 countries and 18 mother languages. He is an avid bicycle commuter, commuting daily 10 miles to and from church.

Mona (Meahan) ’09 and Jacob Krohn were married November 25, 2017 in St. Louis. Mona works in the hardware deployment department of Panera Corporate in Kirkwood, Mo. They reside in Florissant, Mo.

Gary Willis ’76 was chosen to go on the Indianapolis Honor Flight to Washington D.C. in May 2018. The honor flights are for veterans who served in World War II, Korea and/or the Vietnam War. Gary was in Vietnam while he served in the U.S. Air Force from 1960 to 1981. Gary and his wife, Marjorie, live in Noblesville, Ind. They have been retired since 2004. Marjorie has Parkinson’s disease.

DeWayne Rucker ’78 has written and published a fiction book called Swift Justice about domestic terrorism taking place mostly in Jefferson City, Mo. After retirement from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, he went back to work at the Federal Courthouse in Jefferson City as a court security officer.

Maureen (Keller) Rucker ’78 is retired and spent three months in the Philippines in 2017 teaching first grade at an American Christian school on the island of Mindanao.

Tim Wilkerson ’79 was appointed collector of Callaway County, Missouri. He previously served as the assistant vice president of Bank Star One, having started his banking career in 1978.

1980’s Ken Carson ’80 teaches science at Round Rock Opportunity Center in Round Rock, Texas. He lives with his wife, Connie Stried, in Liberty Hill, Texas.

Scot ’83 and Terri (Clark) ’82 Wade recently sold their home and moved to Terri’s childhood home in Hannibal, Mo. Scot has spent the last year completely remodeling the house. Terri retired from the State of Missouri and works part-time for the Hannibal Municipal Court. Scot works for French Gerleman as Electrical Sales Representative.

Their oldest son, Seth, settled in Hannibal after college and works at Mark Twain Behavioral Health and is a talented musician performing under the name of FRATE. Their youngest, Shay, is a sophomore in college studying electrical engineering.

Laura (Anderson) Zimmer ’83 works for the University of Missouri as a PreEmployment Transition Specialist. She lives in Warrenton, Mo. Captain David Perkins ’84 has retired from the Missouri State Highway Patrol. He lives with his wife, Annette Rengier-Perkins in Jefferson City, Mo. Kurt Sangmeister ’84 and his wife, Gina, are Turtle Patrol Volunteers which is a program administered through Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium in Sarasota, Fla. It involves searching for sea turtle crawls on Gulf coast beaches before dawn and marking nests so that the eggs can be staked off and protected. When the turtle hatchlings emerge, they look for their small flipper prints in the sand to ensure they head towards the Gulf rather than wooded or populated areas where they would not survive. The Sangmeisters live in Venice, Fla.

Dawn (Clapper) Whitcomb ’87, adjutant for the Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy, Ill. received the Woman of Impact award by the YWCA. She has been especially active in suicide prevention and has worked in a number of areas connected with mental health.

1990’s Heath Richmond ’90 became Program and Evaluation Coordinator for the Community Foundation Service of West Central Illinois and Northeast Missouri in Quincy, Ill. He lives with his wife, Kathy, in Ursa, Ill. Carrie Thompson ’94 lives in Royse City, Texas. She is a manager in the training department for Bio-Rad Laboratories.

Johnna (Clayton) ’09 and Matt Dennis are parents of a son, Melvin, born July 18, 2017 in St. Louis. Mo. They currently reside in Hannibal, Mo. Jessica (Logsdon) ’15 and Colt Sommers are parents of a daughter, Jaelyn Kay, born on November 17, 2017.

She joins big brother, Carter. The Sommers family resides in Luray, Mo. Jackie (Duffy) ’13 and Ryan ’10 Burns are parents of a daughter, Jentry Rae, born February 12, 2018. She joins big brother, Emmett. They reside near Laclede, Mo. Keeley (Strange) ’19 and Brett Harsell are parents of a daughter, Clara Katherine, born December 12, 2017.

Grandparents are Marty (Parsons) ’91 and Kirk ’93 Strange and great-grandmother, is Phyllis (Abrams) Parsons ’61 and numerous other aunts and uncles that attended C-SC. Michael ’01 and Gina McCloud are parents of a daughter, Ellie Grace, born April 3, 2018. She joins big brothers, Anthony, age 3, and Will Foster, age 6. The McClouds live in Parker, Colo.

He has led three different member high schools to IHSA Musical Organization state final trophies, including three state championships, while coaching countless individuals who have placed in the IHSA’s Solo & Ensemble competitions.

Jeanne Kerr ’99 lives in Memphis, Tenn. with her husband, Nick, and their children, Evelyn and Arthur. Jeanne is a stay-at-home parent.

Jeff Weckback ’99 and his wife, Ashley, and daughters, Eva and Laila, live in Jacksonville, Fla. where he works for Constellation Brands.

2000’s Sara (Ellis) Hooker ’03 is an executive administrative assistant to the hospital president and vice president for SSM St. Mary’s Hospital in Clayton, Mo. Sara and her family live in Imperial, Mo. Jesse Uhlmeyer ’03 will become superintendent of the Canton R-5 School District in Canton, Mo. in July, 2018. He lives with his wife, Lindsay (Gaither) ’04 and their four children in Canton, Mo. Adam Duesterhaus ’06 has been named director of communications and development for the United Way of Adams County. Tracy (Thurman) Fountain ’07 was named Teacher of the Year by the Palmyra, Mo. Chamber of Commerce. Tracy is a freshman English teacher at Palmyra High School and also serves as a technology coach.

Ethan Bragg ’13 lives in Kansas City, Mo. and works at William Jewell College as a financial aid specialist.

2010’s Amanda Eisele ’11 has moved to Myrtle Beach, SC, and is the director of fraternity and sorority life for Coastal Carolina University in Conway, S.C. Cynthia (Van Zante) Gain ’11 is employed as an assistant controller for Triad Manufacturing. She lives with her family in St. Charles, Mo. Katelyn Gibson ’11 teaches first grade in the Bevier C-4 School District in Bevier, Mo. and resides in Macon, Mo. Brian Richardson ’11 started the Krimson Leadership Academy at a local elementary school in Bloomington, Ind. The academy focuses on leadership development for young men of color in fourth through sixth grade.

Brian is the assistant director for the office of student diversity and inclusion at Indiana University for the School of Public Health.

Tim Maples ’13 was the guest artist at Culver-Stockton College for the theatre production, Impossible Marriage in April, 2018. Since graduating from C-SC he has worked as an actor and theater administrator at various theaters around Chicago. When he is not acting, he works full-time as the audience services manager at the Greenhouse Theater Center in the Lincoln Park neighborhood of Chicago, Ill.

IRA. I just turned 70 1/2, what are the benefits if I make a gift now as well as after my lifetime?

A. By making a gift this year of up to $100,000 from your IRA you can see your philanthropic dollars at work. You are jumpstarting the legacy you would like to leave and giving yourself the joy of watching your philanthropy take shape. Moreover, you can fulfill any outstanding pledge you may have made by transferring that amount from your IRA as long as it is $100,000 or less for the year.

Q. Can my gift be used as my required minimum distribution under the law?

A. Yes, absolutely. If you have not yet taken your required minimum

distribution, the IRA charitable rollover gift can satisfy all or part of that requirement. Contact your IRA custodian to complete the gift.

Under the new tax law giving through your IRA (provided you are 701/2 years old) has excellent tax advantage. Please consult your tax professional to determine if making a gift through your IRA fits with your financial and philanthropic goals.

For the past nine years, Culver-Stockton College freshmen have participated in Extreme Dome Makeover (EDM). During Wildcat Welcome weekend, clad in Culver-Stockton t-shirts, freshmen, Wildcat Welcome Leaders, faculty and staff walk down the concourse and into Canton to complete improvement projects around town and in surrounding communities.

Why don’t we, as alumni and friends of the college, do something more? EDM, Extreme Dome Makeover, has had a makeover and is now expanded to Everyone Doing More!
