CULTURE IRELAND Culture Ireland creates and supports opportunities for Irish artists and companies to present their work at international festivals, venues, showcases and arts markets including the Edinburgh Festivals, Celtic Connections (Glasgow), the Venice Art and Architecture Biennales, WOMEX World Music Expo, South by Southwest (in partnership with First Music Contact), Frankfurt Book Fair (in partnership with Literature Ireland), Tanzmesse and Classical: NEXT. Over the last 18 months, Culture Ireland has continued its promotion of Irish arts globally, mainly in the digital realm, supporting Irish artists to present virtually at international festivals and venues and through special initiatives such as Ireland Performs and SEODA. As travel restrictions are lifted, Culture Ireland will return to providing grants for live touring opportunities as well as online performances, both in partnership with international promoters.

John Kane sits on a hospital trolley. Very shortly, a giant lobster, two women called Mary, a very old man and a jazz percussionist arrive. Then everything starts.

Medicine is a dark and frequently absurdist work that shatters the boundary between cast and audience. It is a devastatingly funny and moving meditation on how, for decades, we have treated those we have called ‘mentally ill’.

Featuring a sensational cast – Clare Barrett, Aoife Duffin and Domhnall Gleeson, with drummer, Seán Carpio – Enda Walsh once again shines a light on the darkest corners of our collective stories.

The climate apocalypse has hit. Dublin is completely underwater. Best friends Bláthnaid and Debs are the sole survivors, living on the top floor of Liberty Hall. With only seagulls for company, they spend their days sheltering from the storms and reminiscing over the last days of Dublin. Debs looks to the future, but Bláthnaid is tormented by guilt. Why were they blind to the wave that was coming? And can they salvage a future from the wreckage? Afloat explores loss, sisterhood, and climate anxiety.

Puck Tyrrell is waiting for a boat. He hasn’t gone to work today.

He has probably lost his job anyway. Puck’s had a run of good luck lately; first the allotment, then the free ticket to Heebie Jeebies and the new job; the newest recruit at the Academy of Holodramatic Arts, where algorithms do all the heavy thinking; those algorithms just can’t get enough in the Unity quest to create “art without artists”; studying the freaks, creating the data.

An exciting new filmic/stage collaboration between Laura Sheeran and Little John Nee; Drone Bone Jetty, like their last collaboration Radio Rosario, is set in a not too distant dystopian future in the west of Ireland.

Acclaimed Irish comedian Tadhg Hickey brings you his weird and wonderful part theatre, part stand-up comedy show, In One Eye, Out The Other. The show tells the story of Feargal, the downtrodden but cheery man who fulfilled his lifelong dream of becoming an alcoholic. Using the Catholic calendar as a roadmap, Feargal leads us on a surreal and hilarious journey with many poignant twists in the hope of arriving at a sort of light at the end of the tunnel for the ‘bright man’.

The show is loosely based on Tadhg’s own journey with alcoholism and has had Irish audiences – including many who’ve been affected by alcoholism – flocking to the show. In One Eye, Out the Other has had three sell out runs in Dublin.

In 2019, Fede and his 74 year old mother, set off on a quest through Havana to look for América. Shared memories, conflicting recollections, and offline maps led them through their past. A past peopled with ghosts scattered among grand avenues, dark lanes and unnerving dead ends in the city that had taken them in more than 30 years before, when following his Father’s arrest by a Military Junta, five year old Fede and his family were forced to flee the Salvadoran Civil war.

Looking for América charts two journeys. The journey of that night in Havana looking for a Salvadoran ex-Guerilla fighter and the journey of escaping the catastrophe that had engulfed Fede’s country decades before.
