The Eastside Arts Society (EAS) operates on the traditional, unceded ancestral territories of the x wməθk wəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwwú7mesh (Squamish) and Səlilwətaɬ/sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh) peoples. The EAS is grateful to gather on these lands and waters, and we work from a place of respect and responsibility to this gift.

Culture Crawl: Year 29 and... Looking Ahead to 30!

SPECIAL THANKS TO THE AUDAIN FOUNDATION

We are extremely grateful for the support of the Audain Foundation, who have committed to three years of presenting partner of the Culture Crawl. The leadership and vision demonstrated in supporting artists in their creative spaces will enable greater experimentation and the creation of new works by both emerging and established Eastside Arts District artists, now and in the future.

Founded by Michael Audain, the Audain Foundation was established in 1997.

The Audain Foundation is committed to the development of British Columbian artists, with the objective as fostering greater appreciation of the visual arts, in British Columbia and beyond through grants, scholarships, chairs and fellowships, endowments and capital projects.

The Foundation strives to enable environments where artists can create and thrive, while ensuring visual art is broadly accessible to the public. We are deeply thankful for its support.

This year marks the 29th annual Culture Crawl—an incredible milestone for any arts organization. We are beyond thrilled to announce that the Audain Foundation has joined us as our presenting partner for the next three years.

As we celebrate this achievement, we’ve already begun planning for our 30th anniversary next year. It will be a landmark event, and we’d love to hear from anyone interested in joining us for this exciting celebration.

Eastside Arts Festival (EAF)

Our 5th eastside arts festival was a tremendous success! It continues to grow and evolve as we collaborate with a diverse array of arts organizations throughout the Eastside Arts District.

A true highlight this year was the incredible day in MacLean Park , a free community event featuring outstanding live music presented in partnership with The Rickshaw Theatre, Creative BC, Strathcona BIA , and MacLean Park Music . It was a shining example of what happens when artists and arts organizations come together to create something truly special.

Eastside Arts District (EAD)

We’re excited to share that we’ve launched the first phase of the Eastside Arts District website (eastsideartsdistrict.ca). This is just the beginning—our next phase will feature current arts listings from across the district.

We are also proud to announce that we are members of the Global Cultural Districts Network , a vibrant world-wide community of arts and cultural districts providing opportunities for collaboration and shared learning.

We would like to thank the many individuals and partner organizations, including our board of directors, our volunteers, and our incredible team!

We are deeply grateful for your support. Whether you are discovering emerging artists or revisiting the work of established creators, we invite you to explore and celebrate the creativity on display during this year’s Culture Crawl.

Here’s to another year of art, connection, and community— together, we are shaping a vibrant cultural and artistic future!

WE ARE MOVING IN SO MANY EXCITING AND POSITIVE DIRECTIONS FOR OUR ARTS COMMUNITY!

chair welcome message

Welcome to the 29th Annual Eastside Culture Crawl Festival.

On behalf of the Eastside Arts Society, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the 29th annual Eastside Culture Crawl Festival! Each year, this extraordinary event opens doors into the studios and creative spaces of the Eastside Arts District, inviting us all to connect directly with the artists whose work shapes and strengthens the community.

As you explore the festival, we hope you’ll be inspired by the incredible diversity of art on display and energized by the creativity that thrives here. Your participation supports individual artists and helps sustain the cultural economy that makes the Eastside such a vibrant place to live and work.

This annual festival is made possible by the passion and generosity of so many—the artists, members, partners, and community who continue to make art happen in the Eastside Arts District. A heartfelt thank you to the extraordinary team at the Eastside Arts Society, whose year-round programming ensures that the voices and visions of local artists are celebrated and shared.

After more than a decade in Vancouver, I remain grateful for the creativity, resilience, and innovation of the cultural producers who call the Eastside Arts District home. Their dedication reminds us that art sustains our neighborhoods, our communities, and is for everyone.

Welcome to the Crawl - let’s continue to celebrate, connect, and create together.

Idiocy 2025 Culture Crawl Preview Exhibit

OPENING NOVEMBER 6, 6-8pm

Nov 6–28

We are thrilled to be presenting once again a multi-venue, salon-style curated exhibition at the Cultch, Alternative Creations Gallery, and the Pendulum Gallery. The exhibition will feature 80+ artists and a variety of mediums including painting, drawing, photography, printmaking, and sculpture.

The theme of this year's juried Crawl exhibition is “ Passion Reason Idiocy ”. Passion is emotional. Reason is rational. Idiocy is foolishness. Do you have bouts of passion... reason... idiocy? These may be symptoms of a creative and artistic mind.

During a time of global change, artists need to share their creative vision of the world. In this exhibition, artists share their Passion, Reason, Idiocy or in combination.

Moving Art 2025 Unity

12TH ANNUAL EASTSIDE CULTURE CRAWL FILM AND VIDEO EXHIBITION

"Alone we are thread, together we are cloth."

Unity explores the beauty of connection - between people, ideas, and the natural world. From the intimate act of braiding hair to the intricate weaving of textiles, these works trace the ways in which individuality intertwines into collective creation. Artists this year draw together disparate strands: nature and a human voice, community and solitude, digital signal with analogue process.

Each piece reminds us that unity is not uniformity, but the rhythm of many parts moving as one. Together, these works assemble a vision from fragments of memory and perspective, a liminal cloak that once opened reveals our togetherness in grief, our oneness with nature, and our mutual love for the buildings that hold our history. Even the great cat distribution system reveals its hand - evidence that harmony exists in the most mysterious networks of all.

Threads meet. Worlds overlap. The tree becomes greater than its rings.

Now in our 29th year, the Culture Crawl has grown from a community of 45 artists, to an annual visual arts festival that directly connects thousands of art lovers such as yourself with hundreds of artists, craftspeople, and designers.

It was a productive year for the Eastside Arts Society (EAS), made possible in part by the support of our donors who played an integral role in helping to ensure that Art is for Everyone in Vancouver.

Because of our donors’ generous support:

○ We welcomed over 40,000 people to the 28th annual Eastside Culture Crawl in November 2024, with 520 participating artists over the 4-day festival.

○ In July, 3,425 people participated in the newly expanded Eastside Arts Festival in art-making workshops and performing arts.

○ Studio 101 gave 220 public school youth the opportunity to create art with professional artists throughout the year.

○ And, we took important steps in the development of the Eastside Arts District by creating a communications plan and a pilot website.

For close to three decades, the Eastside Arts Society has created vibrant and lasting arts and culture programming, serving as a catalyst for meaningful community engagement. Our mandate is to continue to protect cultural spaces, build capacity for artists, and bring meaningful artistic experiences to the citizens and youth of Vancouver. In a city where the arts are continually pushed to the margins, our work is critical to ensure a future where art

thrives. We want to build awareness, increase access, and advocate for the arts locally and beyond. This work is driven by the core belief that Art is For Everyone!

This year we need your support to:

○ Increase public awareness of our free and low-cost Culture Crawl and Eastside Arts Festival.

○ Scale up our pilot District-wide website that better helps to engage the community

○ Work for the preservation and protection of artist production spaces and cultural heritage.

○ Lead and collectively advocate for the sustainability of all arts and culture on the Eastside.

○ Enable equity and diversity in our programming by creating opportunities and partnerships with underrepresented artists and groups .

○ Deliver enriching and life-changing arts programming for local youth

As a registered charity, we rely on donors and partners like you to be there for our community, our artists, and the youth we support. We hope you will consider making a donation to the Eastside Arts Society to ensure that we continue to produce accessible and low-cost programming because ART IS FOR EVERYONE!

Celebrating the Arts of the Eastside Arts District

This summer, the Onni Group and the Eastside Arts Society presented an evening of art, wine and canapés in celebration of the Arts in the Eastside Arts District. The event was held at David Robinson Studios in the iconic Parker Street Studios with special guest speaker, MLA Amshen - Joan Phillip MLA for Vancouver-Mount Pleasant , and arts supporters from across Vancouver. In addition to celebrating the Arts in the Eastside Arts District, the EAS was thrilled to kick off the 3rd annual Art raffle featuring stunning artwork by celebrated artists David Robinson, Jeff Martin, Niina Chebry, and Amy Stewart. This event raised funds to support the Eastside Arts Society and our ongoing development of the Eastside Arts District to ensure that Art Happens Here for decades to come.

Studio 101

Studio 101 is an Eastside Arts Society program dedicated to supporting diverse and engaging artistic experiences for Vancouver’s Eastside youth.

Many Eastside schools have limited exposure to professional artists and arts experiences beyond the classroom. Studio 101 brings school children into participating Eastside Culture Crawl artist studio spaces for free, hands-on workshops. . For many, it is their first time connecting with professional artists and seeing how their work is made first-hand, opening a window of previously unconsidered possibilities.

Students from grades 4-7 from Britannia, Seymour, Grandview and Strathcona schools will take part in the program, offering classroom activities and small group visits to artists’ studios for immersive hands-on workshops. This year's partnerships include a week-long Indigenous artist residency at Xpey’ school, and a new partnership with Emily Carr University and its faculty, supporting ECU’s mission to inspire the next generation of creative thinkers to drive meaningful change in the world through practice-based art and design education.

The Eastside Arts Society’s ongoing commitment is to build and strengthen capacity for artists and arts organizations within the geographic region of Vancouver’s Eastside and to enhance and promote the connectivity of the arts with the public.

Vancouver’s Eastside is home to the highest concentration of artists in any neighbourhood across Canada and the birthplace of the annual Eastside Culture Crawl, which this year celebrates its 29th anniversary. EAS has advanced the development, awareness and appreciation of art and design in BC and provides artists, designers, craftspeople, and the public a forum for exchanging ideas. EAS strives to develop programming and initiatives that are open and inclusive to all artists, from emerging to established. It has done this by developing one of the first visual art, design and craft festivals, the Eastside Culture Crawl, and in doing so has been a groundbreaker for the visual arts to break away from traditional models governing the visual arts.

Following four incredible years of growing our new summertime art-making event, we were thrilled to welcome back the newly expanded Eastside Arts Festival. The addition of performing artists and pop-up arts workshops in breweries was a creative and engaging way to showcase the diverse talent and vibrant arts community of Vancouver's Eastside. By embracing and celebrating this diversity through our festival programming, we are not only providing opportunities for artists and

participants to engage with different art forms but also fostering a sense of community and connection within the Eastside Arts District. Events like ours play a crucial role in promoting cultural exchange, creativity, and inclusivity, enriching the social fabric of the community.

This year, EAS furthered the development of the Eastside Arts District (EAD) by building a pilot website; the first phase of many public engagement tools to educate and engage the community with the visual and performing artists, venues, arts organizations and events of Vancouver’s Eastside. Providing resources, opportunities, and platforms for artists to showcase their work not only empowers individual creatives but also enriches the cultural landscape of the Eastside.

Located in Vancouver’s Eastside, we anticipate the EAD to be: an inclusive and collaborative neighborhood, a hub of artistic creation, innovation, economic activity, production and presentation; a driver of affordable, accessible permanent infrastructure and facilities designed for arts and cultural activities; and, uniquely branded and promoted to reflect its diverse communities.

Eastside Arts Festival enjoyed its fifth year in 2025. This ever-growing, ever-changing community celebration has grown from a single day COVID response, with art workshops in the park, to a two-day interdisciplinary festival centred on the Eastside Arts District.

This year’s events included hands-on workshops in artist studios and local tasting rooms; walking tours exploring the area and its history; dance performances; art demos; concerts; family activities; brewery and more.

Running from July 18-27, this year’s festival boasted the largest number of art-making opportunities yet, as well as a free community celebration held in MacLean Park July 26th. This extraordinary day featured a free music stage, produced in partnership with the Rickshaw Theatre and Strathcona BIA; an artisan market; food trucks; family-friendly public art activities; and a beer garden hosted by Strange Fellows Brewing.

Special thanks to our Beer Passport Fundraiser partners, East Van Brewing Company, Luppolo Brewing, Off the Rail Brewing Parallel 49 Brewing, Strange Fellows Brewing, Strathcona Brewing, Storm Brewing, and Superflux Brewing.

Their generosity helped support our programs, and gave our patrons the opportunity to sample the best of “Yeast Van!”

In Memoriam

Alma Lee

Writers Festival

Founding Artistic Director Alma

Lee, who was a great friend and supporter of the Culture Crawl, passed away peacefully on March 28, 2025.

Lee was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1940, the daughter of a bagpipemaker who was an avid reader. She immigrated to Canada in 1967 and founded the established the Writers Festival in 1988. She was its Artistic Director for 17 years, presenting such notable writers as Margaret Atwood, Miriam Toews, Carol Shields, John Irving, and Salman Rushdie.

Atwood once described Lee to CBC as a "little Scottish hippie" who was "always just full of enthusiasm.”

Lee’s impact on Canada’s literary scene can’t be overstated. A life-long advocate for arts and culture, who also founded the Writers’ Union of Canada and the Writers’ Trust of Canada, her vision and dedication put Vancouver on the literary map. Today the Vancouver Writers Festival is thriving, in great part thanks to the framework she built.

Dennis Brown

Dennis Brown, a longtime supporter of the Crawl and an activist in the fight to maintain and expand creative space in Vancouver, died February 1 after years of health challenges. He was 75.

After a long career in the fishing industry as an officer of the United Fishermen and Allied Workers Union, Dennis effectively committed himself to his art in the latter years of his life. He became a founding member of 901 Artists Co-op in 2009 when the members’ studio space at 901 Main was threatened with condo development. The ensuing battle resulted in some new space on Scotia Street, but the Co-op itself moved to a new location on Powell St. where Portside Studios recently celebrated its 16th anniversary.

Dennis was an avid mountaineer, a successful writer and a talented painter, especially plein air landscapes of BC’s mountain wilderness that were featured in his annual exhibits at the Crawl. His legacy lives on, both in his powerful landscape paintings and the affordable studio space at Portside.
