Editorial
Dear friends and students of Alliance Française d’Ahmedabad,
The previous two months of summer and monsoon have been extremely fruitful for Alliance Française d’Ahmedabad. Our new premise of Baroda has been inaugurated in July by Rajmata devi of Baroda and the Educative, cultural and scientific advisor of France and India. Shortly within a month, in Surat, the Nawab of Sachin cut the red ribbon of our French classes at AURO University, a place where the teaching philosophy and principles corelate well to that of Alliance Française. The committee of Alliance Française has also taken into account the creation of an advisory committee consisting of some iconic Gujarati personalities from human rights, various industries and the government to inspire the politics of Alliance Française d’Ahmedabad. After having had a full house Four-hands piano concert on 17th of August, the programmation of next two months is filled with events. Our Mediatheque is in process of taking a different shape as you will soon find a small indoor café to have a sip while reading comic books or magazines. Our bimonthly magazine Découvrir also evolves with its new columns (le coin français) “france Culture” and a quiz “jeux de mots” for students learning French. In September, we present you an illustration exhibition based on poems of Charles Baudelaire. Come and live French in all forms not only at AF Ahmedabad but also at Baroda and Surat!

The main pillar of our teaching remains our pedagogy. The French courses are divided in 6 levels as per the common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Supporting these levels are our workshops that help students improve and finish their language. And lastly, a rigorous cultural calendar with almost 100 events every year providing a creative environment for the language to grow as a culture.
Now in One year you can master three levels of French with Alliance Française and in almost 1 and a half year get your international diploma!

Shanghai Ranking: 35 French Establishments in the spotlight Among the 35 ranked establishments, 21 of them are among the top 500 universities in the world, two more than last year! Highest in the 2019 charts, 3 French institutions are in the Top 100. Two are distinguished even among the top 50 classified: University Paris-South in 37th position and Sorbonne University in the 44th, while the Ecole Normale Supérieure occupies 79th place. As every year at this time, the Academic Ranking of World Universities of Jiaotong University in Shanghai has just released its list of the 1000 best universities in the world. It is not much surprise for France that sees in this classification few changes as far as it is concerned. With a total of 35 of the 1000 distinguished establishments, France remains in 6th place, as last year and the year before, even though some universities are gaining places.
Taking note of these results, Frédérique Vidal, French Minister of Higher Education, congratulated the institutions that are now honored. However, the minister underlines “that it is appropriate to make good use of the Shanghai ranking, which constitutes an important indicator of the scientific influence of French universities but also includes, as any ranking, choices and methodological bias whose impact is sometimes significant. Recall that the ARWU, to establish this ranking, is mainly based on quantitative research indicators: number of past and current professors who have received honorary recognition (Nobel Prize or Fields Medal), number of publications in reference scientific journals or number of citations in other journals.

Surabhi K. S. “Charpak is undoubtedly a supporter of systematic international exchange of students, culture and the ideas which follow. The growing need for this is quite evident not only in fields of scientific research but also in the success of societies, corporations and with that, nations!”

CinéClub La Cité de la Peur (1994) Comedy | Friday, 6th Sept 2019 6 pm at French Gallery A second-class horror movie has to be shown at Cannes Film Festival, but before each screening, the projectionist is killed by a mysterious fellow, with hammer and sickle, just as it happens in the film to be shown. The movie parodies big budget American films such as Instinct, Pretty Woman etc., and relies heavily on puns and word pay, which makes it interesting for the french learners.
Jalouse (2017) Comedy | Friday, 27th Sept 2019 7 pm at French Gallery An elegant literature teacher becomes bitterly jealous of her daughter’s youth and beauty. As her newfound jealousy spirals out of control, friends, neighbours and colleagues become the target of her sour grapes.
