Editorial

Dear friends and partners of AF Ahmedabad,

This month we wanted to thank and congratulate our beloved President Pavan Bakeri for his unwavering support to our Alliance Française for over a decade. Our President has been awarded the highest French distinction that very few Indians have received from the President of the French Republic: the National Order of Merit. As an example for the whole Indian and global network, Mr. Bakeri brought a large-scale real estate project from the broad perspective of the purchase of land in a very strategic district of Ahmedabad for the construction, passing through the smallest details of daily life and maintenance. This dedication is exceptional and many Alliances Françaises around the world will be inspired by it to acquire or build premises.

In November our AF will organize the biggest digital arts festival in South Asia "Deconfine". Exhibitions and debates will be organized simultaneously in more than 20 French AF / IF cultural centers online and in person. The great artist Béatrice de Fays will present her augmented reality works in 6 countries simultaneously and you will be able to see them at the AF and NID.

In December, we will celebrate half a century of photographs by the famous P. Dalwadi, where we will evoke journalism through lectures by Dorian Malovic and recycling through a film and a debate at the French Human Sciences Center in Delhi. Thanks to our Campus France center (1st floor), Alumni from France in Gujarat will meet at AFA.

Finally, sign up for our French lessons, as it is the most important and useful international language to learn today and we start new courses all the time. You will find the information in this edition of Decouvrir.

Testimonials

I always wanted to learn a foreign language, especially French, and my quest for the same landed me at Alliance Française. It’s not just about the language per se, but getting acquainted with French culture as well. Initially it was a bit difficult, but then again, it’s my first time learning a foreign language and this is where I have to appreciate the professors, who are extremely helpful as well as co-operative and make the overall learning an easy experience. I have been an online student since my enrollment and so far it has been very convenient, more so if you are a working professional. Additionally, I was provided with access to Culturethèque where I found a treasure of online resources to hone my linguistic skills. As of now I am pursuing A2 level and will pursue further as well. Until then, Au revoir!

SCREENING and CONFERENCE AT AF AHMEDABAD: 6th December 2021 Stay tuned to our Instagram and Facebook pages for more information! What happens to our garbage after it is dumped? Through the example of Delhi, the film explores the transformation of a piece of plastic waste into a resource, through filmed interviews with diverse “People of Waste” living in the shadow of consumer society. It aims at making visible the myriad professions that specialize in the collection, sorting, reselling, cleaning, shredding and transformation of waste, from the stigmatized garbage picker at the bottom till the industrialist at the top of the pyramid who re-injects the recovered materials into the formal economy. Beyond the Indian case, it reminds the spectators of their responsibility as a producer of waste and their relation with this waste recovery system, questioning the ambivalent discourses on recycling which tend to legitimize an endless mass consumption. This short documentary film (18min), has been co-directed by Rémi de Bercegol (CNRS), Grant Davis and Shankare Gowda; funded by IRD Images, completed with “MITI CNRS, it was shot in February 2019 in and around Delhi. It relies on a scientific understanding of the on-going scenario in Delhi and aims at opening the debate to a broader non-academic audience about the relationship between societies and waste.
