Bonjour à tous and Namaste, Summer is upon us - schools are closed and kids at home. Albeit the unbearable heat, the summer does bring us a wonderful vacation time to spend some quality moments with our friends and families. This break, instead of hibernating under your air conditioners, come visit us at the Alliance Francaise d’Ahmedabad and indulge in having a thorough and beautiful experiencing of learning French language and culture. You will discover that the opportunities are endless. The next two months will be bustling at the Alliance Francaise d’Ahmedabad with several upcoming courses like the Summer Crash Courses, Discover French Workshops, Activity based workshops for children, Sunday Sessions and a lot more. With our highly trained professors and a unique pedagogy which is being followed worldwide in all the Alliance Françaises, learning is more fun than ever. What we offer to people is not just French classes, it is a holistic approach that we adapt with various cultural programs, concerts, film screenings, book readings, exhibitions and a lot more. On the 5th of May, we have a wonderful concert coming up – Kolkata Jam Masala (see page 18), a rare mélange of Indian ragas and Psychedelic Rock with a Visual Performance on the music. It is truly one of the best programs we will be presenting this year. Following the same we have a beautiful screening of a film by the famous Chris Marker, “Le Joli Mai”. In the month of June we will be organizing a Franco-American Film Festival for the first time ever, followed by the celebration of Music Day on the 21st of June. All our students and members are exposed to a variety of such cultural programs that form the Francophone culture in Gujarat. Become a part of our family by registering for the annual/life membership and attend these wonderful events all along the year. Moreover, a lot of people have made their careers through French language. With all the programs, benefits and scholarship offered by the French Government to Indian students, this is the time to come out of your shell and explore to go beyond the horizon. We welcome you in our family. Culturally Yours, Frédérique Terzan

Last Saturday, after giving a speech at the Tedx Paris conference, I wanted to interview my friend Bharati for this column. Through my speech, I wanted to illustrate how an institution like Alliance Française can open up a world of opportunities and particularly to people who in their own country are criticized for being eclectic and not complying with the uniform societal norms. I asked Bharati if the economic difficulties and the French pessimism affected her in Paris. “Listen Anjali”, she responded, “Bombay has two concert halls while here, they have hundreds. Bombay would have ten great restaurants and Paris, thousands. Look, we never met in Bombay but I know that your foreign diploma got you a decent salary [I earned 750 euros per month] with which you are renting a studio in the central city, can go to a restaurant, and even take yoga classes. I can’t live this life in India with the same salary but here in Paris, it is possible. With my internship salary [of 800 euros], I pay my rent, dine out occasionally, and now will even try some Bikram yoga!” Bharati, who is 25 years old, grew up in a village of north India and shifted to Bombay at the age of 14 with her family, where they lived in a small 20 square feet apartment. She always spoke in Hindi at school. Thanks to her merit in academia, she got admission in one of the most prestigious colleges in the city where the medium of instruction was English. Because of her background she faced a difficult time adapting to the English medium of instruction. Bharati also felt like her classmates and professors discriminated her because of this shortcoming. She commuted from the suburbs (half an hour in train) and her family belonged to the lower social strata compared to other students.

Alliance Française, better than national education? One day, she visited Alliance Française to watch her first French film: Jules et Jim. That very evening Bharati fell in love with the French language. However, her college dissuaded her saying it would be a very difficult language for her to learn as a majority of students who had opted for the language had already been to France. Bharati really wanted to join the Alliance Française, but her parents refused to pay the registration fees. How would learning the words with strange pronunciations of a bizarre language help their daughter achieve something? However, she decided to collect money for it by doing some odd-jobs. Alliance Française symbolises the best of efforts made by the public diplomacy throughout the world. This institution crosses boundaries to promulgate the French language and its influence. The pedagogy is incredibly efficient coupled with an excellent level of quality in teaching even though it is geographically distant from France has achieved what the national education has not been able to achieve when it comes to the teaching quality of languages. Finally, Bharati took admission in the Alliance Française. Her socio-economic status and background was irrelevant to the professors as she was solely a student of the French language to them and they treated her just like other students. She displayed that she was naturally gifted at learning the language and after her graduation, the Alliance Française offered her a job of coordinating the exams for 280 euros per month. It was a good salary for someone who had just graduated and soon after her parents were proud of her. After a year at Alliance, she was recruited by a French firm based in Mumbai. She was offered a salary of 450 euros per month. Not only was she able to support her family but also to save for her dream, to study in France. Then, Paris happened: Two years later in August of 2011, she landed in Paris. It was only the second time she had boarded a plane, and for the first time she was travelling abroad. I met her two days post her arrival through a common friend who is passionate about India, Sophie. Bharati was already in a culture shock and after only 48 hours, she was feeling homesick in France. Personally, I was ecstatic by the very thought of being in Paris and I tried to help her. In one year’s time Bharati had adapted and would quiet often console me at the time when days would be cold and raining. I would be whimpering, “Tropical and colourful Bombay.” Bharati kept reminding me of the opportunity we all had to be in Paris, just because it was Paris. It just occurred to me recently that if Bharati finds a job in France after the completion of her masters in December, she would obtain the same salary just like every other young graduate who spend their whole life in France or even like myself, who studied in the best international private school or her old classmates visit France in their vacations. She was at par with us despite her humble and unprivileged background, thanks to French language and Alliance Française. Découvrir | May - Jun 2017 | 05
