Stephen Schofield

Stephen Schofield has presented, at different times, drawings, sculptures and performances across Canada: at the Power Plant, the Southern Alberta Art Gallery, the Art Gallery of Mississauga, le Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, the Montreal Biennial, the National Gallery of Canada, Dalhousie Art Gallery, as well as the Musée nationale des Beaux-arts du Québec. In France he has had solo exhibitions at the CAC de Vassivère, L’Aquarium and the CREDAC and in New York he has shown in individual and group shows at the Sculpture Centre, White Columns, John Weber Gallery and Horodner Romley Gallery. Recently he has started to present outdoor sculptures at the Toronto Sculpture Garden in 2002 and in Artefact 2007 on l’Ile Ste-Hélène in Montréal. His work is in major public and private collections. He was awarded the Louis Comtois Prize of the City of Montréal in 2005 and the Canada Council studio at ISCP, New York in 2008. This is his first solo exhibition in New York City.

/Statement

These pieces are all skin and bones and, at least at the beginning, a lot of hot air. The materials are flexible and liquid: cloth soaked in sugar water. Thin, light and of little substance, these sculptures are a gang of sly boots.

Although some of them are really big guys, they are all in the end just surface and illusion. That said, they are stiff, not stuffed; tight and tonic not soft or embryonic like street inflatables, so something must be at work to make these pieces stand, float and leap off the wall, floor, and ceiling as they do.

The strength and promise of these pieces depends on the interactions of the weight of the cloth, the cut of the patterns, the choice of seam, the concentration of the sugar water solution and the circulation of air. With the right balance, the sugar reinforces the seams so they can act as bones and binds the fibres so the cloth can hold the gestures of the figures. In fact, once the pieces are set, they are remarkably resistant.

Since I started this work during a residency at the International Studio and Curatorial Programme in New York in 2008, I’ve come to realise that making these slyboots is a complex and contradictory matter. Complex, because most of the figures are a patchwork of over one hundred and seventy separate pieces of cloth and contradictory, because I consider each piece of cloth as both clothing and body, the assembly of pieces as sculpture and effigy and when I step back, I see the group of works as both classical nudes and superheroes.

Perhaps they are so complex and contradictory because I first created the patterns by drawing directly on my companion’s body − Michel Daigneault − the different muscle groups to transfer them unto pattern paper only to adjust and exploit the potential and promise of each variable: cloth, cut, seam, mix and air in order to make the cloth be true.

Richard Tuttle

Richard Tuttle is one of the most significant artists working today. Since the mid-1960s, he has created an extraordinarily varied body of work that eludes historical or stylistic categorization. Tuttle’s work exists in the space between painting, sculpture, poetry, assemblage, and drawing. He draws beauty out of humble materials, reflecting the fragility of the world in his poetic works. Without a specific reference point, his investigations of line, volume, color, texture, shape, and form are imbued with a sense of spirituality and informed by a deep intellectual curiosity. Language, spatial relationship, and scale are also central concerns for the artist, who maintains an acute awareness for the viewer’s aesthetic experience.

Tuttle has been the subject of hundreds of solo exhibitions since 1965, including numerous museum surveys, ranging from his first, at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1975, to more recently, a two-year travelling retrospective organized by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (2005-2007). Tuttle has also been included in the prestigious group exhibitions, the Venice biennale (1976, 1997, 2001) and the Whitney Museum of American Art Biennial (1977, 1987, 2000).

His work is held nearly every major collection worldwide, including in Europe at the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; the Centre Pompidou, Paris; and Kunstmuseum Winterthur, Switzerland; the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Smithsonian Institution, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and The Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Museum of Modern Art in New York, among many others.

Tuttle will be the Artist in Residence at the Getty Research Institute from September 2012–June 2013. A solo exhibition of his work will be on view at Pace this fall, which has represented the artist since 2007. The artist lives and works in Mount Desert, Maine; Abiquiu, New Mexico and New York City.

/Statement

The Fuller Void Seeing Stephen Schofield’s work in Toronto at the Textile Museum of Canada in 2010 was moving the way good art should be and seldom is. I was moved because of its testimonial aspect, perhaps because I felt drawn to witness, myself, having suffered close proximity to the many 9/11 victims too quickly cremated, or more generally because anyone, who has lived, need memorializing in this way.

It is also a comment on life—a floating, horizontalizing air form, all the more prescient for how it’s formed; every detail (down to what molecule?) bespoke the intensity of its expression, though I’m not sure Stephen would want to acknowledge all that I saw, or see—so it is with the personal, and maybe why he is not better known as an artist?

Rare to find someone who has something to say, we are lucky to have his work, that he has found a way, and the means to display what he must feel ardently needs it. A work of voice—unusual in the purely visual arts—its extraordinary fulfillment sits besides the fuller void.

Je fus ému par ce travail faisant œuvre de témoignage, peut-être parce que je me sentais appelé à constater les choses par moi-même, ayant vécu de près la souffrance associée à ces nombreuses victimes du 11 septembre trop rapidement incinérées, ou peut-être, plus généralement, parce que toute personne ayant vécu se doit d’être commémorée de cette façon.

Il y avait également là un commentaire sur la vie—une forme aérienne, flottante, horizontalisante, presciente de la façon dont elle a été formée. Chaque détail (jusqu’à quelle molécule?) venait témoigner de l’intensité de son expression—bien que je ne sois pas certain que Stephen serait prêt à reconnaître tout ce que j’y ai vu, ou y vois. Nous sommes ici dans la sphère du personnel—peut-être est-ce là la raison pour laquelle il n’est pas plus connu en tant qu’artiste?

Il est rare de rencontrer une personne ayant quelque chose à dire. Nous sommes choyés de pouvoir apprécier ses œuvres, choyés qu’il ait trouvé une façon et les moyens d’exposer ce qui, juge-t-il sans doute, doit nécessairement être exposé. Un travail de la voix—inhabituel dans le monde des arts purement visuels – dont l’extraordinaire accomplissement se tient aux côtés du vide comblé.

Slyboots Promise: Stephen Schofield and the making of believers By jake moore

The “conditional” is a verb tense used to express what would happen given certain events or actions. Equivalents exist in many languages; in English, additional words are required to put potential into linguistic play. In French, the conditional is expressed through a form of conjugation, so the potential for a shift is thus inherent, or rather, structural. The things that Stephen Schofield makes are such; his sculptural works, drawings, performance video—his entire oeuvre—manifests as something that ‘could be’ while asserting an uncanny existence as something that already is, or has been. The linguistic reference is an apt starting point for a bilingual artist living and working in Montréal, Québec, where language is always at the surface often as an index of difference. Schofield’s use of language is full of care and deeply considered, and parallels his method of engagement with other kinds of making.

With Slyboots Promise at CUE, Schofield offers several of his inflated textile sculptures alongside video and performance. Giddy Cosmonaut, Sailor’s Delight, Sexton and Gentle Shade are textile inflatables with direct relationship to the body, sculptural tradition and personal narrative, Ann’s Dream—a video—articulates a relationship to material, action and time, Drunken Tutor) exists in both media and will be the focus of this essay for it demonstrates both Schofield’s facility and deep understanding of media specificity. At first, this giant male form seems somewhat awkward. It is sewn from a honey-coloured ultra suede, its hundreds of pattern pieces stitched together with visible seams, like the welds inside the Statue of Liberty. The seams add structure and definition; they delineate the musculature, much like drawings in space, yet uniquely, these lines allow for volume, for when the textile assemblages are inflated with air (from the discharge valve of a vacuum cleaner) and stiffened with sugar, they are equally enlivened and stilled. The cloth now serves as membrane—a selective barrier between two phases. It is the

separation between inflation and collapse, line and form, hyle1 and entity. Dualities all, yet hinged as sites of potential. Conditional.

This ultra-suede giant performs a unique gesture. Its material nature and construction evoke the domestic, but this is not the note on which Schofield wishes to linger. The figure folds back on itself through an unexpected orifice: a large hand has been threaded through his back and exits his torso to cover his sex. Or has it become his sex? That a body part could serve as that which both reveals and conceals is at the core of Schofield’s work. That the part is not isolated from the whole form but instead knotted within it in a seemingly continuous gesture articulates clearly the complexity of investigation, poetics and material knowledge at work. For Giorgio Agamben, and seemingly Schofield, gesture “is the exhibition of a mediality: it is the process of making the means visible as such.” 2

When we see this giant in video form, the mythical references of its title come into play.

Drunken Tutor, refers directly to Silenus, the teacher and faithful companion of the wine-god Dionysus; he was usually totally drunk and supported by satyrs, the half goat/ half human male companions of the gods of pleasure. In the video, we see the inflated giant being transported through the cliff-like streets of Barjols, France on the arms and shoulders of young girls. The weight of the mythic creature as well as the unstable ground on which they travel animate the image, connecting its present-day action to histories real and imagined. Barjols was once the site of many prosperous tanneries, but its industry has failed and its abandoned factories have been transformed into artists’ residencies and studios. Watching the procession meander down from the scenic hilltops to the town’s centre, one has conflicting emotions. Putting these girls into service of any kind raises complex practical and ethical questions of gender and power, all the more so if they are supporting a naked giant. Is this safe? Is this folly? Has a border been breached?

The video also gives new meaning to the ultra-suede skin of the sculpture. No longer upholstery-like, it is now tied to the site of a performance, evoking the leather once produced there. The passage of the young girls from the rural to the urban suggests an allegorical turn, but the rhetorical gesture is volleyed back when we see the sculpture within the gallery, now still. The tension suggested by the young girls’ servitude is mirrored in the affect created by the refigured knot of Drunken Tutor. Schofield’s determined and clearly articulated gestures have brought the mythical into our sense of the conceivable and indicated that this happens every day—conditionally.

To conjure the verb tense again is to assert the civility of the artist, for the conditional is the linguistic method with which one recognizes that the other must be a willing player in the actions and engagements we undertake. Schofield’s facility with modes of expression, whether sculptural, performative, written or spoken, has a civilizing turn. Civility is a complex term; it can be theorized as denial of animality, drawing on codes of conduct, or a kind of politesse. In 26

Schofield’s case, civility instead brings the animal, sexual, and behavioural considerations into a kind of alignment alongside dexterity, plastic ability, and a deep awareness of art historical conduct. I believe this is deeply polite in the most generous of ways—he avoids direct statements so as not to constrain his audience and to evade finality. His works are not problems to solve— possibility to become something else, to be a better version, to be tailored anew as each instance is reconsidered in the impossible now.

Schofield associe la vidéo et la performance à ses sculptures textiles gonflées. Giddy Cosmonaut, Sailor’s Delight, Sexton et Gentle Shade sont des structures textiles gonflables en prise directe sur le corps humain, la tradition sculpturale et le récit personnel; Ann’s Dream—une vidéo—articule des rapports avec la matière, l’action et le temps; Drunken Tutor (for Silenus) existe dans les deux médias et sera le point de mire de ce texte parce que l’œuvre illustre à la fois les dons de Schofield et sa profonde compréhension de la spécificité des moyens d’expression. Au premier coup d’œil, ce mâle géant semble plutôt gauche.

Il est façonné dans une suédine de couleur miel, et les centaines de pièces du patron sont reliées par des coutures visibles, telles les soudures à l’intérieur de la Statue de la Liberté. Les coutures apportent structure et définition; elles délimitent la musculature, comme des dessins dans l’espace, mais, fait unique, ces lignes permettent de donner du volume, puisqu’une fois les assemblages de tissu gonflés à l’air (à partir de la soupape d’échappement d’un aspirateur) et amidonnés au sucre, ils sont aussi animés qu’immobiles. Le tissu sert maintenant de membrane – une barrière sélective entre deux étapes. C’est la limite entre le gonflement et la dislocation, la ligne et la forme, l’hyl 1 et l’entité. Des dualités, certes, mais articulées comme lieux de potentiel. Le conditionnel.

Ce géant de suédine exécute un geste unique. Sa nature et sa construction matérielles évoquent la

vie domestique, mais là n’est pas l’aspect sur lequel Schofield désire s’attarder. Le personnage se replie sur lui-même à travers un orifice inattendu : une grosse main traverse son dos et ressort de son torse de manière à couvrir son sexe. Ou est-elle devenue son sexe? Qu’une partie du corps puisse servir à la fois à révéler et à dissimuler, voilà qui est au cœur du travail de Schofield. Que la partie ne soit pas isolée de l’ensemble de la forme, mais qu’elle y soit plutôt imbriquée en un geste apparemment continu témoigne éloquemment de la complexité de la recherche, de la poésie et de la connaissance de la matière qui entre ici en jeu. Pour Giorgio Agamben et, semble-t-il, pour Schofield, le geste « est la démonstration d’une médialité : c’est le processus visant à rendre visible le moyen comme tel. » 2 Lorsqu’on regarde ce géant en format vidéo, les références mythiques de son nom prennent leur sens. Drunken Tutor fait directement allusion à Silenus, le professeur et le fidèle compagnon du dieu du vin, Dionysus; il était habituellement complètement ivre et soutenu par des satyres, les compagnons mâles des dieux du plaisir, moitié boucs, moitié humains. Dans la vidéo, on voit le géant gonflé se faire transporter de par les rues escarpées de Barjols, en France, posé sur les bras et les épaules de jeunes filles.

Le poids de la créature mythique et le sol instable sur lequel ils se déplacent animent l’image, emmaillant l’action actuelle à des histoires vraies et fictives. Autrefois, à Barjols, on exploitait de nombreuses tanneries prospères, mais l’industrie a décliné et les usines abandonnées ont été transformées en résidences et en studios d’artistes. La descente sinueuse du cortège des hauteurs des collines pittoresques vers le centre de la ville suscite des émotions ambivalentes. Le fait de se servir de jeunes filles, à quelque fin que ce

soit, soulève des questions pratiques et éthiques complexes quant au sexe et au pouvoir, et encore plus lorsqu’elles supportent un géant nu. Est-ce sécuritaire? Est-ce de la folie? A-t-on outrepassé une limite?

La vidéo confère aussi un autre sens à la peau de suédine de la sculpture. Loin du tissu d’ameublement, elle est maintenant associée au lieu d’une performance, évoquant le cuir qu’on produisait autrefois dans ces lieux. Le passage des jeunes filles de la campagne à la ville suggère une tournure allégorique, mais le geste rhétorique est remis de volée lorsqu’on contemple, à l’intérieur de la galerie, la sculpture devenue immobile. La tension évoquée par la servitude des jeunes filles est reflétée dans l’émotion créée par le nœud repensé de Drunken Tutor. Les gestes déterminés et clairement articulés de Schofield ajoutent une dimension mythique à notre sens du concevable et indiquent que cela se produit tous les jours—dans certaines conditions.

Faire apparaître à nouveau le temps de verbe revient à affirmer la civilité de l’artiste, puisque le

conditionnel est la méthode linguistique par laquelle on reconnaît la participation de l’autre aux actions et aux obligations entreprises. La facilité avec laquelle Schofield manie les modes d’expression, qu’il s’agisse de la sculpture, de la performance, de l’écriture ou de la parole, imprime une allure civilisatrice.

Le mot « civilité » est complexe; sur le plan théorique, on peut l’interpréter comme un déni de l’animalité, s’appuyant sur des codes de conduite ou une sorte de politesse. Pour Schofield, la civilité situe plutôt les considérations animales, sexuelles et comportementales dans un genre d’alignement qui côtoie la dextérité, les aptitudes plastiques et une conscience approfondie de la pratique historique de l’art. Je crois que c’est là faire preuve, d’une manière fort généreuse, d’une profonde politesse—il évite les formulations directes de façon à ne pas contraindre son public et à échapper à la finalité. Ses œuvres ne sont pas des problèmes à résoudre—il y a toujours une possibilité de devenir autre chose, d’être une version améliorée, d’être façonné de nouveau, puisque chaque cas est reconsidéré dans l’impossible maintenant.

Slyboots : La promesse Ces pièces sont toutes de peau et d’os et, au début du moins, de beaucoup d’air chaud. Les matériaux sont souples et liquides : du tissu trempé dans de l’eau sucrée. Fines, légères et de consistance délicate, ces sculptures forment un groupe de petits malins.

Bien que certains d’entre eux soient plutôt bien baraqués, ils ne sont finalement qu’enveloppe et illusion. Malgré leur apparence, ils ne sont pas rembourrés, mais rigides, compacts et toniques, contrairement aux structures gonflables molles et embryonnaires qu’on peut voir dans la rue. Il doit donc y avoir quelque chose pour faire tenir ces pièces, les faire flotter et bondir du mur, du plancher et du plafond comme elles le font.

La force et la promesse de ces pièces dépendent des interactions entre le poids du tissu, la coupe des modèles, le choix du point de couture, la concentration de la solution à base de sucre et d’eau, et la circulation de l’air. Lorsque le tout est bien équilibré, le sucre renforce les coutures de sorte qu’elles puissent agir comme une ossature, et il cimente les fibres pour que le tissu puisse tenir les positions imposées aux personnages qui, une fois installés, sont remarquablement résistants.

Depuis que j’ai amorcé ce travail à titre d’artiste en résidence à l’International Studio and Curatorial Program à New York, en 2008, j’ai pris conscience que la création de ces personnages futés est une démarche complexe et contradictoire. Complexe parce que la plupart des personnages sont composés d’une mosaïque de plus de 170 pièces de tissu distinctes, et contradictoire parce que je considère chaque pièce de tissu à la fois comme le vêtement et le corps, et l’assemblage des pièces comme une sculpture et une effigie; lorsque je prends du recul, je vois le groupe d’œuvres à la fois comme des nus classiques et des superhéros.

Peut-être sont-ils à ce point complexes et contradictoires parce que j’ai d’abord créé les modèles en dessinant les différents groupes de muscles directement sur le corps de mon compagnon, Michel Daigneault, avant de les transférer sur un papier à patron, pour adapter et exploiter le potentiel et la promesse de chaque variable—le tissu, la coupe, la couture, le mélange et l’air—de manière à permettre au tissu de rendre compte de la vérité.
