CUE Art Foundation is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit forum for contemporary art and cultural exchange that provides opportunities and resources for under-recognized artists. We value the astonishing diversity of creativity that artists provide and the importance of their activity in the social context of the city. CUE provides artists, students, scholars and art professionals resources at many stages of their careers and creative lives. Our programs include exhibitions, publications, professional development seminars, educational outreach, symposia, readings and performances. Since 2002, we have operated from our 4,500 square foot storefront venue in the heart of New York’s Chelsea Arts District. CUE exhibiting artists are chosen by their peers and a rotating group of advisors and curators from across the country. This pluralistic process ensures that CUE consistently offers diverse viewpoints from multiple disciplines of artistic practice. Simply put, we give artists their CUE to take center stage in the challenging world of art.

I had some experience in something like this. I was part of a Friends Meeting ( Quakers ) that wrote a same-sex marriage Minute ( a position ). We slowly formed what needed to be present in order for a marriage to take place. It was in that spirit that I attempted to form what needed to be present in order to live in love. First, I made a Vehicle of Marriage ( 1996 Volvo sedan ). Second, I embarked on my Wedding Tour.

I Hello

Coffin/notebook case as ark ( H I )

When the 1000 notebooks arrived I realized I was looking at the rest of my life. I decided to make a coffin/notebook case to hold these notebooks.

They stopped making the notebook I have kept since 1973. I had to have them fabricated. The minimum order was 1000.

An ark made from all the books I have ever kept

During the 2008 DemocratIC primary race, an article about Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama described a similar situation/contest between Elizabeth Stanton and Frederick Douglas. On the cover of this book that Gelsy and I kept I (a white man) asked her (a black woman) who we should put on the front, Douglas or Stanton.

On certain occasions Gelsy would appear at Foxxy Magdalena. She would do this by wearing a wig, and clothes unlike her normal dress. She would stand next to people that she worked with every day and they would not recognize her. They would not recognize her that is, until she winked. Gelsy and I liked to talk about why this was. I came to feel, for someone like me, if it was not Gelsy then it defaulted to all of the black women I did not know. What do you think?

Gelsy decided that we should put Frederick Douglas on the front cover.

Byron, Kay and Nana Burford love their animals. A visitor asked Byron if he thought animals had souls. Byron answered wondering if humans have souls. Phil Meyer and I have sat across the table, passing a 6" x 4" index card attempting to draw the answer to Byron’s question. We have been doing this for over one-half of a century.
