Three decades of acknowledging, promoting and preserving the achievements and legacies of Connecticut women seems like little in the course of over three hundred years but under the burdens of oppression, inequality and discrimination, it is significant, considering it had never been done before or after the Hall was inaugurated.

Today we stand proud and more energized than ever knowing that what we do has a profound effect on women and girls, and yes, men and boys. We are educating and inspiring today and tomorrow’s female leaders; we are giving voice to past, present and future women whose stories need be heard, we are building confidence, we are providing tools for success, we are crashing barriers, we are exposing opportunities, we are shaping dreams, we are confirming worth, and we are ensuring that “herstory” is front and center and our place in “ history” is illuminated, unshakable and immovable.

It has not been easy. Small women-centered non-profits face enduring hardships raising money: challenged by limited government funding; changing strategic partnerships and increased competition. We are in a very crowded field, to retain staff, increase board participation, and volunteer engagement demands our sincere attention. We are as many others, emerging from the pandemic environment that exacerbated operations.

So, know that when we thank each one of you, whether as an individual, partner, employee, inductee, business, teacher, student, scholar, trustee, or volunteer: WE HONESTLY CAN’T THANK YOU ENOUGH!

2023 Inductees Lisa Cortés Award-winning director and producer Lisa Cortés generates bold, explosive art that shines light on important stories hidden from view. From helping launch the revolutionary artists RUN-D.M.C. and the Beastie Boys to executive-producing the Academy Award®-winning film, Precious, Lisa sparks cultural change through works of unrivaled excellence. Little Richard: I Am Everything (CNN Films), which she directed and produced, had its world premiere in January 2023 as the opening night selection in the US documentary competition at the Sundance Film Festival, where it was acquired by Magnolia Films. Also premiering at Sundance was Invisible Beauty, the documentary about Black fashion industry pioneer Bethann Hardison, which she produced. In June 2023, The Space Race (National Geographic Documentary Films), premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival. Cortés directed and produced this gripping saga of African American astronauts at NASA and in space.

In 2020, Cortés directed and produced All In: The Fight For Democracy, tracing the violent history of the voting rights struggle. Emmy-winning HBO documentary, The Apollo, (2019) which Cortés produced, explores African American cultural and political history through the story of the legendary Apollo Theater. Cortés executive produced Precious (2009) which was nominated for six Academy Awards® and won two. The film received the Sundance Audience Award and Grand Jury Prize for best drama. Her film productions have received over 80 international awards and nominations.

Cortés launched her early career as a music executive at the iconic Def Jam label and Rush Artist Management; she also was VP of Artist & Repertoire at Mercury Records and founded the Loose Cannon label. Cortés is a member of the Producers Branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the Director’s Guild of America. She serves on the Boards of Film at Lincoln Center; Independent Television Services (ITVS); Yaddo, the celebrated artists’ community in Saratoga Springs; the Trajal Harrell Dance Company; and the DGA Focus on Women Committee.

CORTÉS FILMWORKS, a NYC-based multimedia production company founded by Lisa Cortés partners with Blue Ant Studios to develop and produce scripted and unscripted properties spanning music, social justice/crime, and other topics. In 2023, the company signed a global development deal with the Museum of the City of New York for projects in the pop culture, history and music genres. Cortés Filmworks is committed to telling complex, powerful stories from new perspectives, and elevating the talent often overlooked by the mainstream.

Connecticut Women’s Hall of Fame

Laura Cruickshank Laura Cruickshank, FAIA, University Master Planner and Chief Architect and Associate Vice President for University Planning, Design and Construction, joined the University of Connecticut in February 2013.

Ms. Cruickshank is responsible for the immediate and long-range planning, space management, design, construction and real estate of the University’s $2.5 billion-dollar Capital Improvement Plan, UConn 2000 and Next Generation CT programs for the Storrs and Regional Campuses and the Law School.

Prior to joining UConn, Laura Cruickshank was the Yale University Planner and directed planning and design on the Yale central campus. Ms. Cruickshank led Yale planning for the new Yale-NUS College in Singapore representing the University in the planning, design and construction of the new liberal arts college. She collaborated with an international team of architects, and partnered with professional and administrative colleagues from the National University of Singapore. Prior to her tenure at Yale, Laura was in private practice for over twenty years.

Ms. Cruickshank received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Mount Holyoke College in 1975 and her Master of Architecture degree from the University of New Mexico School of Architecture and Planning in 1980; she gave the Commencement address at the School in May 2016. Laura holds architectural registration in Connecticut and New York and is an elected member of the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects (COF, AIA) and member of the Society for College and University Planning (SCUP), the Association of University Architects (AUA) and the National Organization of Minority Architects (NOMA). Ms. Cruickshank was appointed to the Governor’s 5G Council, serves on the Construction Institute’s Board of Advisors* and has served on various private boards and public commissions, including the General Services Adminis-

tration peer review for the design of the new campus for the Department of Homeland Security.

She has won numerous awards in recognition of her work.

2023 Inductees

2023 Inductees Carla Squatrito

Carla Squatrito is the founder, and for 43 years, was the President of Carla’s Pasta, a multi-million dollar food production company. Carla moved to the United States from Turin, Italy in 1968 at the age of 27. In addition to learning a new language, she also missed the fresh pastas, produce, and cooking from her home country. In the 1970’s there was very little authentic Italian food available in America. In 1978, Carla decided to open an Italian food specialty shop that carried fresh pasta and sauces in Manchester, Connecticut.

By 1982 Carla’s Pasta moved to a large USDA approved manufacturing facility in Manchester, Connecticut. Carla’s Pasta became known as a producer of high quality products that used only fresh ingredients and no fillers. The processing of Carla’s Pasta used a laminating technique which mimics the hand kneading motion and creates a thinner high quality dough. The company then developed a steam bag technology so customers could cook fresh pasta in a matter of minutes. Both of Carla’s sons, Sandro Squatrito, and Sergio Squatrito, became executives, making the pasta business a family venture.

Carla’s Pasta continued to grow and had three factory expansions in 2002, 2013, and 2017. By 2017 Carla’s Pasta, now located in South Windsor, had 300 employees who were making about forty-seven million pounds of pasta a year. This expansion enabled Carla’s Pasta to become the largest provider of frozen pasta in the United States. In 2016 and 2018 Inc. Magazine named Carla’s Pasta one of the Inc. 5000 Fastest Growing Businesses. In 2020, COVID-19 closed down many restaurants, hotels, and sporting events. This decrease in demand for specialty foods resulted in the sale of Carla’s Pasta to Tribe 9 Foods in 2021.

Connecticut Women’s Hall of Fame

Regina Winters-Toussaint Regina Winters-Toussaint (1969-2016) was an architect and founder of Zared Enterprises, LLC in New Haven, CT and Port Arthur, TX. She founded the company in 2003 and specialized in sustainable and green design. She and her work were featured in the New York Times Magazine, New York News Day, the New Haven Register, New Haven Independent and the Real Estate & Construction Review among others. She became a Managing Member of the interdisciplinary real estate development and planning firm, Via Nuova in 2006.

For over two decades she was an administrator, professional consultant and advocate for programs geared toward neighborhood revitalization, community development and urban planning. She served first as Deputy for Administrative Services, administering all state, federal and municipal funding for affordable housing development for the City of New Haven. Later she accepted a Mayoral appointment to the position of Executive Director of the City of New Haven’s Office of Housing and Neighborhood Development (the Livable City Initiative) and finally as Interim Executive Director of the New Haven Housing Authority. During her tenure she wrote grants successfully realizing $17 million in new state and federal funding for city-sponsored housing programs and administered $340 million in public funding for the creation of affordable housing, sustainable communities and for neighborhood revitalization efforts City-wide.

Ms. Winters-Toussaint was the co-founder of the Connecticut Chapter of the National Organization of Minority Architects and the only African-American Woman Principal of an Architecture and Planning Firm in the State of Connecticut. She was a member of Connecticut’s State Historic Preservation Review Board and a Trustee of the Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation.

Ms. Winters-Toussaint was a graduate of the George School, an elite Quaker prep school in Pennsylvania. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Visual and Environmental Studies from Harvard University and a Master of Architecture Degree from Yale University.

Tribute Films Tribute Film Producer Karyl Evans Karyl Evans is a six-time Emmy Award-winning filmmaker. She is the owner of Karyl Evans Productions LLC based in North Haven, CT. Barbara Kennelly | 1994 inductee Nine term Congresswoman, first female Chief Deputy Majority Whip, one of the highest-ranking women ever in party leadership during her time on the political scene, a long-time advocate for the preservation of Social Security and Medicare, former Connecticut Secretary of State.

Production Services Connecticut Public Broadcasting Network Connecticut Public is Connecticut’s only state-wide, community-supported public media service. In addition to delivering highly trusted PBS and NPR programming, Connecticut Public also produces award-winning local news, public affairs and entertainment programming covering the issues and ideas most relevant to the people of Connecticut.

Founding President’s Award In 2013, in honor of our Founding President, Geena Clonan, we inaugurated the Founding President’s Award to recognize the outstanding work of a Connecticut non-profit that educates and empowers women.

30 years ago, a dream was conceived to honor women’s achievements by giving voice to their life’s stories. In turn, their stories educate, encourage, inspire, and empower each of us to be all that we can be! The dream would not have been realized without the loyalty and dedication of our Founders: The Connecticut Forum, Connecticut Public, (formerly CPTV), and the University of Hartford’s Hartford College for Women, now the Women’s Initiative. To this day, they remain our steadfast supporters and we remain eternally grateful.

Forums are presented to audiences of 2,800 at The Bushnell theater in Hartford.

The legacy of Hartford College for Women lives on for today’s women.

Established in 1933, Hartford College for Women will always be celebrated for its role in the education of women. Its impact continues to this day through The Women’s Advancement Initiative and its programs for women students, faculty, and staff. Established in 2006 as a nonprofit by Hartford College for Women Board of Trustees and University of Hartford leaders, The Women’s Advancement Initiative celebrates the legacy of Hartford College for Women and positions women for success through education and leadership programs; research and scholarship opportunities; and career connections and experiences. Its signature program, LEAD, is a four-year program that responds to the unique challenges and opportunities undergraduate women students experience at each stage of their college journey. The Women’s Advancement Initiative is a sisterhood across time with 200 LEAD alumnae, 100 LEAD students, 144 Laura Johnson Leaders, and 111 Dorothy Goodwin Scholars, joining the more than 3,500 Hartford College for Women alumnae. Laura Johnson played a significant role in Hartford College for Women’s growth in size, influence, and prestige during her 30+ year tenure (1943-1976), first as dean and then as president. By the end of her presidency, it was clear that Laura Johnson had taken Hartford College for Women from a modest “noble experiment” to an established presence in Hartford educational circles. She is remembered as a visionary leader, a woman whose door was always open, and as a force who challenged and who continues to challenge each of us to see strength and value in ourselves, and to use these to make a difference. In addition to guiding Hartford College for Women directly, Laura Johnson pushed for the education of all young women in the nation.

Educational Programming School Programs We bring the galvanizing stories of our inductees directly to students in grades 4th-12th. We offer programs on over twenty topics that are aligned with state and national standards.

STEMfems Workshops We host “STEMfems: Women Transforming Our World” events, energizing 200 middle school girls to consider careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Eileen Kraus Scholarship The Eileen Kraus Scholarship was established in 2016 in partnership with Kaman Corporation and has been extended into the future thanks to the generosity of the Kraus family and friends. The scholarship awards $5,000 each year to an outstanding Connecticut woman beginning her first year of college or university. The scholarship honors Eileen’s legacy and ensures that the next generation of women leaders are able to follow the trail she so capably blazed.

2023 Awardee | Isabel Mendes We are pleased to announce this year’s Eileen Kraus Scholarship Awardee, Isabel Mendes. Isabel’s winning essay highlighted Dr. Joyce Yerwood, the first female African American physician in Fairfield County who devoted her 50-year career to providing quality medical care for low-income women, children, and families. Dr. Yerwood was a tireless advocate for social justice and equality who impacted thousands of lives over her lifetime of civic engagement including founding the Yerwood Center, the first community center for African Americans in Stamford.

Isabel is a 17-year-old 12-grade High Honors student at Miss Porter’s School. She’s a digital and physical artist focusing mainly on Black and Latinx-inspired digital art under the Instagram handle @IzzyMendyes_Art. Isabel aspires to be a physician, aiming to make a difference in the health outcomes of disenfranchised populations, and is attending Boston University Kilachand Honors College as a Presidential Scholar in the Human Physiology Program at the College of Health & Rehabilitation Services at Sargent College. She has participated in Sisters in STEM at UConn School of Engineering and The Perry Initiative Outreach Program at Yale School of Medicine. She’s a devoted and passionate mathematician, engaging in college-level mathematics courses purely for knowledge.

Winning Essay By: Isabel Mendes Like Dr. Ursula Joyce Yerwood, every “no” that I have received has only fueled my desire to find a way to do it on my terms. I was born naturally curious about science and math, and my earliest memories are of visits to the hospital cafeteria to visit my father during his residency.

My curiosity for all things scientific started in the car seat while listening to conversations between him and other caregivers. As the daughter and granddaughter of physicians, I have witnessed firsthand the dedication and commitment needed to be a compassionate, caring, and effective medical professional. My role models, composed mainly of Black physicians, have allowed me to see that scientific and mathematical curiosity can lead to solutions for real-world problems. The art of medicine combines natural science, humanities, and social science with a big dash of caring and compassion. Dr. Yerwood was the first Black woman physician in Fairfield County. Her life as a leader in Connecticut healthcare and a passionate advocate for social justice and access to equitable medical care inspires me and closely aligns with my worldview. Ensuring I had exposure to medicine was a priority leading up to my high school years. As a homeschooler through 7th grade, I created science and math-focused coursework that strategically prepared me for high-school advanced STEM studies. Outside of school, participating in the Perry Initiative increased my awareness of the need for more racial and gender diversity in the field. Improving racial and gender diversity is essential and one of my career aspirations. As a young Black Latina, I recognize the power of representation.

After spending most of my academic years in majority and elite spaces, I will continue my studies at a university that provides gender and racial-affirming and equitable access to coursework, research, and experiences. Like Dr. Yerwood, my extracurricular interests include dance, the fine arts, and acting. I will use my vast opportunities to grow personally and thrive in community with others. Dr. Yerwood lived a life where she modeled doing good and doing well. She excelled as a physician and community leader but also used her love for the arts to give back and promote educational and cultural opportunities for Black youth. That is the kind of legacy that I aspire to leave behind.

Eileen Kraus Scholarship essay continued:

My favorite aspect of high school has been the opportunity to apply what I have learned to hands-on practice. While being exposed to theory is crucial, I genuinely find joy and contentment in witnessing the direct impact of what I have learned and thus making a tangible difference in the world. I have always been interested in multiple avenues of learning for the betterment of humanity. Dr. Yerwood’s legacy aligns with my core values of excellence, service, and truth. Service has been central in my life as a 12-year member of the Greater Hartford Chapter of Jack and Jill. I currently hold the highest-ranking teen position as the Eastern Region Teen Protocol Chair and have participated deeply in sociological research and activism within my high school community. Being the head of my school’s Black students affinity has given me an avenue to promote inclusion and intellectual engagement with diverse people. I created a Black student art gallery promoting young Black female artists, a demographic historically left out of gallery spaces. This inaugural art exhibit allowed for Miss Porter’s community engagement. My passion comes from my love for humanity, particularly those with limited access and who are often on the sidelines or voiceless. My choice for undergraduate studies will be a university with the space to put these values into practice with others who feel the same way I do about research, learning, and community. I have long-term goals of understanding and confronting significant concerns about people’s health, diversity, and inclusion in medicine. Helping people find miracles where they least expect is a major force behind my career choice. My interest in healthcare was sparked by growing up around a strong community that taught me the power of collaboration. Like Dr. Yerwood’s, my community has provided an outlet for powerful social resistance and change.

Addressing healthcare disparity is imperative for several reasons, the first being that medical bias is a barrier to life-saving care. Secondly, fear of not being seen, believed, or understood results in hesitation to seek out medical care and leads to poor outcomes for those greatest in need. Providers representing diverse backgrounds, including race, gender, and lived experiences, are essential to combat the systemic medical challenges that result in people from underrepresented populations dying or having worse outcomes. During the COVID-19 pandemic, BIPOC individuals suffered the most significant mortality rates. I experienced

the loss of family members in the United States and the Dominican Republic beginning early in the COVID-19 pandemic and as recently as the start of my senior year. These losses inspired me to research the implications of race on healthcare. Black and Latino patients, in particular, suffered greatly, as their age-adjusted mortality rates were double that of white and Asian-American patients. Disparities in healthcare are a challenge, and although more racial and gender diversity in healthcare wouldn’t end these problems, it would help combat them. I strive to be an engaged and active participant in the evolving healthcare field and the improved and personalized care for all patients.

Inspired by my mother’s feather-ruffling personality, I have made it my mission to continually grow and challenge my beliefs first and sit in my discomfort to understand the lived experiences of others. I consciously chose vulnerability and personal risk over complicity in my actions at Miss Porter’s School.
