ANNUAL REPORT 2021-22 PEACE

A Message from the President and Board Chair

As the community of Catholic Theological Union learned to live with COVID and adjusted to a new “normal,” there were many moments of light and hope that we celebrated in the 2021-2022 academic year. Throughout the year, there were constant reminders too that now, more than ever, CTU’s vital mission of cultivating peace is critical to the current and future Church. Allow us to share a few of the things to celebrate in the 2021-2022 academic year.

CTU has long distinguished itself as an agent of peace and reconciliation through the ministries of our students and alumni, our curriculum, our faculty, and the public face of the Bernardin Center. Now, with the creation of three new initiatives, CTU stands prepared to spread the Gospel message of good news and peace to a broader, more diverse population throughout the world. Our Pathways@CTU program is actively engaging young adults from marginalized communities in a new living-learning community centered on activism; the Schreiter Institute is spreading essential messages of peace, justice, and reconciliation; and our Center for the Study of Consecrated Life is supporting women and men religious working towards a more racially just Church. In tandem with our unparalleled academics, these initiatives greatly enhance our students’ experience at CTU.

The senior leadership of CTU and the Board of Trustees have developed a new three-year strategic plan. The plan enumerates the vision of a Vatican II church in the Pope Francis era for a 21st century global church that is inclusive, international, intercultural, and social justice focused. Central to the strategic plan are these three goals: increasing enrollment, co-creating the church of tomorrow through cultivation of stellar faculty and programming, and strengthening institutional vitality.

We were tremendously grateful to the Simon Family for patiently waiting until we could once again gather in-person for our Blessed are the Peacemakers dinner as they accepted our Diakonia Award. Because of the strong support received from Simon family members, friends, colleagues and the Helen V. Brach Foundation leadership, we exceeded our fundraising goal. Family patriarch Ray Simon and his son, Matthew Simon, eloquently accepted the award remarking, “CTU students and alumni give us inspiration, give us hope, that together we can make the Kingdom of God a reality here on earth.”

Finally, we are extraordinarily pleased to report we have exceeded our Forward in Faith campaign goal of $16 million. The interrelated campaign investments in scholarships, faculty and innovation have propelled CTU forward in service to our local and global Church as the twenty-first century unfolds.

CTU ended the 2021-2022 in a strong financial position thanks to stable enrollment, sound fiscal principles and successful fundraising. We thank you for supporting and believing in our mission to prepare effective leaders for the Church, ready to witness to Christ’s good news of justice, love and peace.

2021-2022 Year in Review

INSTITUTIONAL ACHIEVEMENTS

A new strategic plan was developed to guide CTU for the next three years. The plan enumerates the vision of Pope Francis for a 21st century global church that is inclusive, international, intercultural, and social justice focused. Central to the strategic plan are the three goals: increasing enrollment, co-creating the church of tomorrow and strengthening institutional vitality.

We are pleased to report we have reached our Forward in Faith campaign goal of $16 million. The interrelated campaign investments in scholarships, faculty and innovation have propelled CTU forward in service to our local and global Church as the twenty-first century unfolds.

Blessed Are The Peacemakers Trustee Dinner was held in person and live-streamed after two years of exclusively virtual programs. The event exceeded attendance projections and surpassed our fundraising goal. This annual celebration honored CTU’s Young Alumni as the Future Church, Now. The Simon Family of Chicago received the Diakonia Award for their lay leadership in public and philanthropic ventures.

Catholic Theological Union’s Board of Trustees elected three new members, including its first representatives from the Jewish and Muslim faiths: Sr. Mūmbi Kīgūtha, CPPS, Carole Segal and Dilnaz Waraich. As a leading Roman Catholic graduate school of theology in North America, CTU has been committed to interfaith understanding since its inception more than fifty years ago, working closely with the Jewish and Muslim communities in Chicago and nationally. At a time when interfaith dialogue is more crucial than ever, the addition of these new board members will shape future Catholic leaders and have an impact on our wider society.

The Association of Theological Schools, (ATS) conducted its accreditation assessment in October 2021. The accreditation visit covered all facets of CTU’s life, including governance, administration, and institutional resources. CTU was pleased to receive a favorable seven-year reaccreditation.

NEW INITIATIVES

CTU was awarded $997,000 five-year grant from the Lilly Endowment, Inc. to launch A Pathway for Tomorrow: Co-creating the Church of Tomorrow at CTU. The central mandate of CTU’s program is to increase the number of young adult ministers inspired to serve as leaders in the Catholic Church.

CTU’s Center for the Study of Consecrated Life was awarded an $825,000 three-year grant from the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation: Catholic Sisters Initiative for Moving Along the Arc: Women Religious as Agents of Reconciliation and Transformative Action toward a More Racially Just Church and World. This program will engage teams of women religious from congregations in the United States to become more deeply aware of systemic racism in religious congregations, the Church, and society, and to become agents of change working for racial justice and reconciliation.

CTU was pleased to announce the establishment of the Robert J. Schreiter, C.PP.S., Institute of Precious Blood Spirituality at CTU. This institute was initiated by three Precious Blood communities who wish to extend their communities core charisms and therefore will offer courses, workshops, and will support academic research that advances the study and praxis of justice and reconciliation. Scholarships will also be offered for students interested in concentrating their studies in this area.

CTU launched a dynamic library of preaching resources as part of a multi-year initiative involving world-renowned scientists and a select group of homileticians. The “Preaching with the Sciences” homily outline library features the first fruits of this extraordinary initiative in preaching, made possible by a generous grant from the John Templeton Foundation. These homiletic resources will influence thousands of preachers seeking help each week in crafting sermons and helping to shape a scientifically informed religious imagination among future preachers.

PARTNERSHIPS

CTU reached a formal agreement with the Diocese of Joliet, IL, to expand the Tolton Scholarship opportunity in addition to the Romero Scholarship, as well as reinvigorate all lay ministry enrollment through shared cost scholarships.

Partnerships with Women Religious communities continues to grow through generous donations. Gifts have been received to fund scholarships, our career center and general operations.

An agreement has been reached with the Diocese of Lexington, KY, for those seminarians to enhance their mission studies by taking one or more courses at CTU.

“And the PEACE of GOD, which surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

ENROLLMENT

For the second year, CTU offered students the option to attend classes in person or online. This has greatly expanded the diversity of our student body, attracting students from across the United States and many other continents.

Enrollment remained steady with 255 students enrolled for the Fall 2021 semester and 216 enrolled in the Spring 2022 semester. This exceeded our enrollment projections.

One hundred thirteen students received scholarship support with an average award of $7,109 and total amount distributed of over $500,000.

The Doctor of Ministry program saw a significant increase in enrolled students, double the number over the prior year.

Reframing Retirement for Mission continues to grow in popularity. This annual online summer lecture series assists participants in making the transition from active ministry to retirement, with a special focus on recognizing and living the retirement years as a fruitful period of life with possibilities for personal growth as well as new opportunities for engaging in ministry.

To promote anti-racism activities at CTU, first year students seeking ministerial degrees are now required to attend a workshop on Understanding the Complexities of Power and Race for Ministry.

EVENTS

In March, Sr. Barbara Reid, OP was inaugurated as the eighth president of Catholic Theological Union and first woman religious to lead the school of theology and ministry. With great celebration, Sr. Barbara was joined in the ceremony by two previous leaders of CTU: Chancellor Donald Senior, CP and president emeritus, Mark Francis, CSV. Bishop Joseph Perry, Auxiliary Bishop of Chicago, offered the invocation before a crowd of almost 300 gathered at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Hyde Park.

In November, the Bernardin Center commemorated the 25th anniversary of Cardinal Joseph Bernardin’s passage to eternity with a panel discussion exploring our hopes for a better future in the light of Cardinal Bernardin’s legacy, Remembering the Past, Facing the Present, Hoping for the Future

The Center for the Study of Consecrated Life (CSCL) presented an engaging conversation with Sr. Maria Cimperman, RSCJ, Associate Professor of Catholic Theological Ethics, and Sr. Nathalie Becquart, XMCJ, Under-Secretary for the General Secretariat of the Synod of Bishops, on Religious Life and the Entire Church Engaging Synodality.

At the annual Dr. Barry Rankin Sunday at CTU on God’s Creation, CTU hosted a panel presentation, Preaching with the Sciences, moderated by Ed Foley, Capuchin, which addressed how the contributions of CTU’s new Preaching with the Sciences homily outline initiative are grounded in the rich imaginations that scientists bring to their work as well as in scientific discoveries that have a potential for revealing religious truths and shedding new insight on ancient teachings and beliefs.

The Augustus Tolton Pastoral Ministry Program presented an online program, Where Have All the Black Catholics Gone? The panel presentation explored the exodus of Black Catholics from the Church. The event was widely attended and was the impetus for a successful grant opportunity which will fund future lectures on contemporary Black Catholic topics.

The Bernardin Center hosted a book launch for Michael O’Laughlin’s latest book, Hidden Mercy which attracted a significant in-person audience. Set against the backdrop of the HIV and AIDS epidemic of the late twentieth century and the Catholic Church’s crackdown on gay and lesbian activists, journalist Michael O’Loughlin searches out the untold stories of those who didn’t look away, who at great personal cost chose compassion–even as he seeks insight for LGBTQ people of faith struggling to find a home in religious communities today.

Seeking Convivencia was an online two-part series on Zoom sponsored by the Catholic-Muslim Studies Program and the Hispanic Theology and Ministry Program of the Catholic Theological Union. The programs were engaging conversations on interreligious dialogue as cultivated through shared exchanges in daily life, cooperative actions for justice, and grassroots contexts that nurture mutual respect and understanding between Muslims and Christians.

In-person for the first time since 2019, CTU was pleased to celebrate the 54th Annual Commencement Ceremony in May, once again at KAM Isaiah Israel Congregation. Fifty-two graduates from the classes of 2020, 2021, and 2022, together representing twenty countries, received certificates or Master level degrees in the areas of Biblical Ministry; Hispanic Theology and Ministry; Intercultural Studies and Ministry; Justice Ministry; Liturgical Ministry; Spiritual Ministry; Pastoral Studies; Ministry; and Theology. Twenty-one received Master of Divinity degrees and seven received Doctor of Ministry degrees. Rev. Agbonkhianmeghe E. Orobator, SJ, received a Doctorate in Theology, honoris causa and Sr. Teresa Maya, CCVI received a Doctorate in Ministry, honoris causa. In their commencement addresses, both spoke emphatically about working collaboratively for justice.

FORWARD IN FAITH CAMPAIGN IMPACT REPORT

In 2017, CTU set the Forward in Faith Campaign funding goal at $16 million, with great determination and optimism. In April 2022, the Forward in Faith Campaign surpassed this goal, bringing in more than $16.2 million in commitments from corporation member orders, board members, life trustees, alumni, faculty, staff, and friends. This has been a remarkable act of faith on the part of our Catholic Theological Union community.

When we embarked together on an anniversary campaign five years ago, we did so because CTU needed to advance energetically forward, quite literally, to meet the needs of today’s students and the demands of our Church and our world.

We are delighted to report that through the Forward in Faith campaign, we have established seven new scholarship funds, and greatly enhanced our ability to attract and retain the very best students locally, nationally and internationally, fortifying faith communities all over the world with missionary disciples.

We have provided increased professional development and research funds, completed the endowment of faculty chairs, and funded ongoing faculty compensation – all to allow academic leadership to flourish, and to ensure the development of the next generation of inspirational and mission-driven faculty.

Finally, we have developed the capacity to leverage rapidly emerging technological advances to enhance classroom and online engagement, and to expand the reach of our program offerings. We could not have anticipated how important innovation and technology investments would become to sustain our academic mission in the pandemic.

With the campaign support has come a burst of energy and a surge of creativity in every corner of our institution. Lives have been changed through the availability of scholarships. New programs have been launched while others have been enhanced and expanded.

As donors to this campaign, you have inspired us to move CTU Forward in Faith at a critical time for graduate theological education.

In particular, we thank our chairs, Dan Murray and the late Fr. Don Senior, CP for their leadership of this campaign. We also thank the campaign’s Honorary chairs, Cardinal Blase Cupich, Jim Denny, and Carole Segal, not only for their support but also their meaningful endorsement.

And lastly, we are very grateful to each of the Steering Committee members for their guidance and support, contributing to the much-needed momentum which will continue beyond the campaign, helping to broaden and deepen philanthropic support for the CTU, whose mission is more essential than ever.

ANNUAL REPORT 2021-22 13

THE WAY SOCIETY

The first followers of Jesus called themselves the “people of the Way” because they were setting out on a courageous journey of faith that would bring the gospel to the world.

In that same spirit, CTU is helping build the future of the church today. We ask you to take this journey with us in this critical time. We intend to build membership in The Way Society, our community of donors who have named CTU in their wills or other estate plans. Your estate gift will provide the critical support that CTU needs to do God’s work, to proclaim the gospel of peace and justice in a credible way. We ask you to partner with us in preparing a new generation of women and men, committed to renewing the life of the church of the 21st century.

If you have already included CTU in your estate plan, please let us know so we can recognize your legacy of generosity. If you would like to join The Way Society with this very personal level of support, contact:
