From the Chair

A

s we turn the page to CTU’s 50th anniversary year as an institution, we are inspired to look back at the very first chapter. Joined by a common cause, three men’s religious communities would set the standard for the preparation of ministers for today’s Church — and this model would evolve like no other: a union of men’s religious orders, each preserving their own charism, but uniting in a community of learners and a vision for a Vatican II Church.

For the last 50 years, CTU’s guiding purpose has been to prepare effective leaders for the Church — men and women religious studying with lay men and women who are ready to serve the people of God wherever they are asked to go. As leadership, we take very seriously ensuring that CTU is financially sound so that this mission to which we are all committed can not only continue, but will expand to meet the challenging needs of the world today.

We share our eternal gratitude for the supporters who continue to endorse this vision with investments in our programs, faculty and of course, our students.

Amidst turbulent times, the stewards of CTU’s mission are called to keep our focus firmly on stability and growth. These may seem like opposites — but in God’s design, a body in motion can keep its balance better than a body standing still. Thus we strive for growth in enrollment — both religious and lay — as well as continued investment in our faculty and innovation as we step into the next half-century.

Thanks to the trust and ongoing investment by our committed supporters, the exemplary stewardship of our investments and donations, and the careful watch on expenses, CTU remains in a strong financial position.

We will continue to rely on the support of our steadfast donors, on the prayers of the entire CTU community, and on the providence of the Lord.

Gratefully, With the effective guidance of our executive leadership and the members of the Board of Trustees’ Investment Sub-Committee, our investment performance in the 2017-18 fiscal year exceeded benchmarks. Our annual Blessed are the Peacemakers Trustee Dinner, which produced more revenue than budgeted, an increase in our auxiliary income, and the diligent oversight of expenses, all contributed to an operational net surplus on the year.

President’s Message Dear Friends of CTU,

D

uring this past academic year we highlighted three CTU graduates in our annual appeal who are serving the Church in extraordinary ways: Kim Lymore, associate minister at the Faith Community of Saint Sabina; Rev. Paul Novak, OSM, president of De La Salle Institute; and Todd Williamson, director of the Office of Divine Worship for the Archdiocese of Chicago. Each has pointed to their years at CTU as the ideal preparation for their current work — a formative grounding in the art of pastoral ministry, the principles of interreligious dialogue, and the power of the liturgy.

This “ideal preparation” represents a tireless investment by CTU’s scholars, leaders, and dedicated financial supporters over the last half-century. As we celebrate fifty years of training ministers like Kim, Paul and Todd, however, we cannot rest on our past.

In the space of this same past year, we’ve witnessed the deplorable events in Charlottesville, the rise of school shootings, and the criminalization of immigrant brothers and sisters and their children seeking a shared future with us in the US. Hitting even closer to home are the wounds of our own Church’s clergy sex abuse scandal opening afresh.

These are challenges that demand a response, that require every institution of Christ’s Church to ask of itself what God wills — and CTU is no exception.

A starting point for CTU has always been Pope John XXIII’s Vatican II mandate that “God loves the world and calls the Church to serve the world.” He offered the two concepts of aggiornamento and ressourcement as a way to define how the Church needed to respond to critical challenges of the times. Aggiornamento is a call for renewal and change; ressourcement is a call to return to our authoritative roots. It’s in the tension between the two that we find our way.

Through our recent strategic planning process, CTU is responding to this dual call to vitality and fidelity, seeking as an institution to be agile and deeply responsive to current events and at the same time deeply faithful to our mission to prepare effective leaders for the Church, ready to witness to Christ’s good news of justice, love, and peace. In the years ahead, we look forward to sharing with you our efforts to increase access to graduate theological education through scholarships to a student body reflective of the diversity of our global Church and this nation; to re-invest in our stellar faculty who have the awesome responsibility of forming future leaders; and to ensure that the programs of CTU are supported by state of the art technology.

Year in Review

I

n support, celebration, and collaboration with the myriad accomplishments of our faculty and students, CTU produced a wide range of events and programming across the 2017-2018 school year. Each effort described here is rooted in the larger mission of CTU, preparing effective leaders for the Church, ready to witness to Christ’s good news of justice, love and peace.

FALL 2017 THRIVING IN MINISTRY RESEARCH PROGR AM

WINS FUNDING

CTU received a $1 million grant from the Lilly Endowment, Inc. for a five-year Thriving in Ministry program to provide a range of programs and resources for vowed religious and lay ecclesial ministers. The grant funds critically needed research to determine the needs and challenges faced by ministers currently working in a wide range of ministries in the Roman Catholic Church in the United States. This research will make it possible to design and implement programs and create resources that target needs and challenges of today’s ministers and be sustainable over time. CTU’s Thriving in Ministry Program has two main components: a research and dissemination program and a pilot project component. While CTU will use the data to design effective programming, the data will also have much broader applications and value for all vowed religious and lay ecclesial ministers within the United States.

In early November, the Center for the Study of Consecrated Life, directed by Maria Cimperman, RSCJ, with Roger Schroeder, SVD, hosted a conference for more than 100 participants from 20 Congregations on the topic, Engaging our Diversity: Interculturality and Consecrated Life. This was the first of a multi-year series of conferences, made possible by a grant from the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, which gives fresh voice to CTU’s longstanding emphasis on world mission. The conference series is designed to train religious communities to promote dialogue and offer practical approaches to interculturality within their religious institutes. A publication and training curriculum will be produced over the lifetime of the project.

CATHOLIC-JEWISH STUDIES PROGR AM NAMES CHAIR, HOSTS SPEAKERS

CTU’s newly named Crown-Ryan Chair of Jewish Studies, Dr. Malka Simkovich, directed this year’s Shapiro Lecture series and the annual Rabbi Hayim Goren Perelmuter Conference, inviting world renowned scholars to campus to speak on a range of topics related to theology, current issues, and culture. Additionally, CTU’s Catholic-Jewish Studies Program co-sponsored a two-day conference with the University of Notre Dame: The Scholar and the Pew: On Gaps and Bridges Between Scholarship and Community Leadership in Judaism and Christianity. Issues of scholarship and community were addressed through panels and presentations from 13 scholars working at the forefront of Jewish-Christian studies, both here in the United States and internationally.

SPEAKER SERIES “SUNDAYS AT CTU” CONTINUES

A tradition in the school’s Chicago neighborhood, Sundays at CTU, features faculty members and Corporation members speaking on compelling topics and promoting the charism of their respective religious orders as a thread within the tapestry of CTU and Chicago as a whole. Highlights of the series include: Sr. Laurie Brink, OP, who explored the call from Matthew’s Gospel in her talk, Love Your Enemy And Pray For Those Who Persecute You: Interpreting Gospel Ethics in an Age of Polarization, exploring how we are to re-interpret the ethical mandates of Jesus in light of our own complex, intercultural, and polarized world.

Br. Antonio Sison, CPPS, author of the book The Sacred Foodways of Film: Theological Servings in 11 Food Films (2016), shared his passionate and imaginative quest for recipes of grace in the integration of theology and intercultural cinema.

And on the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, CTU and the Friars of the Atonement presented the annual Paul Wattson Lecture on Ecumenism, with October 32nd by Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

DEL COR A ZON A L A MESA R AISES FUNDS FOR SCHOL ARS

The primary fundraising event for CTU’s Oscar Romero Scholars program, the always festive Del Corazon a la Mesa brought current and past scholars, supporters, faculty and friends to campus. The 2017 Honorary Chair was Bishop Plácido Rodriguez. Born in Mexico, the Bishop and his family migrated to Chicago in 1953; he was ordained as a Claretian priest in 1968, and served as the Bishop of Lubbock from 1994 to 2016.

SPRING 2018 CATHOLIC-MUSLIM STUDIES PROGR AM EXPANDS AND DEEPENS

CTU received a significant multi-year funding commitment to help advance its existing interreligious dialogue efforts through a comprehensive plan to expand and deepen our Catholic-Muslim Studies programming. The funds enable the addition of a part-time faculty position for a Muslim scholar to advance the program; annual scholarships with preference for Muslim students pursuing Catholic-Muslim studies; and the establishment of ministerial relationships through internships with community partnering institutions. In the fall of 2018, the Catholic-Muslim Studies Program at CTU inaugurated the Beloved Community Internship Initiative.

“ TOGETHER” RESIDENTIAL PROGR AM L AUNCHED

Responding to the growing need for innovative approaches to the formation of young religious, CTU was honored to partner with the Religious Formation Conference in a new program called Together: A Collaborative for Theological Education, Formation and Community. This partnership is made possible by a generous grant from the GHR Foundation and will support a unique approach to offering theological education and formation to Catholic religious. The community-based, residential theology program of study and formation welcomed its first participants in September 2018 and is a cohort-based, residential program of theological studies for newly professed women and men (brothers) religious from various communities and cultures, who are pursuing certificate or degree programs at CTU. SUNDAYS AT CTU SPRING SERIES HIGHLIGHTS INTERCULTUR ALIT Y

Roger Schroeder of the Society of the Divine Word presented a talk entitled Interculturality: Conversion from All Forms of Ethnocentrism, on the call to move beyond tolerance to interculturality, and the need to acknowledge our own varied prejudices and many forms of ethnocentrism that prevent us from more completely participating in the coming of the reign of God.

ANNUAL TOLTON WEEK WELCOMES FORDHAM SCHOL AR, HONORS LONGTIME DIRECTOR

Tolton Week, the annual celebration of the Augustus Tolton Pastoral Ministry Program, began with a lecture by Fr. Bryan Massingale, professor of theological and social ethics at Fordham University, who gave a gripping presentation entitled The Dark Night(s) of Malcolm X: Re-Reading Catholic Spirituality through Black Political Struggle. Later that week, friends and supporters gathered for Harambee, our bi-annual evening of prayer and celebration to support the Augustus Tolton Scholars Program. This gathering also honored C. Vanessa White for her eighteen years of dedication and significant contributions as director of the Tolton Program.

BERNARDIN CENTER HOSTS JAMES MARTIN, SJ

On March 24, CTU hosted a special public “President’s Circle” event under the auspices of The Bernardin Center, featuring James.

Martin, SJ who spoke to a “sell-out” crowd about his book, Building a Bridge — How the Catholic Church and the LGBT Community Can Enter into a Relationship of Respect, Compassion, and Sensitivity. This program, streamed over Facebook Live, had over 5,000 simultaneous viewers.

“IN GOOD FAITH” SERIES CONTINUES WITH SCHOL AR-ACTIVIST EVENING

In 2018, the In Good Faith series continued, a decades-long commitment by CTU described as “Jews, Christians, and Muslims Sharing Perspectives on Issues that Matter to Our Faith Communities and to Our World.” This series is an initiative of the Bernardin Center at CTU in partnership with First Analysis Institute of Integrative Studies.

This annual interactive evening of lively dialogue featured a moderated conversation between three scholar-activists, which was open to the public. The event, called Your God or Mine?

Faith-based Activists Reflect on Unity in Difference, consisted of a panel of faith-based activists including Lailatul Fitriyah, Vatican Nostra Aetate Fellow, PhD student and Presidential Fellow in World Religions at the University of Notre Dame; Tamar Manasseh, Founder of Mothers Against Senseless Killings and current rabbinical student; and Fr. Matt O’Donnell, Pastor, St. Columbanus, Chicago, and DMin student at CTU.

At CTU’s eponymous Blessed are the Peacemakers Trustee Dinner, we honored Carolyn Parmer and John Parmer (posthumously) with the Diakonia Award which recognizes great service to God’s people in the city and Archdiocese of Chicago. Carolyn and John Parmer’s lives of service and care for others truly manifest the Bible’s timeless call.

Catholic Theological Union, with its educational model of lay and religious collaboration and cooperation, honored Archbishop Christophe Pierre, Apostolic Nuncio to the United States, with the 2018 Blessed are the Peacemakers award for his unwavering support of a broad ecclesial vision that takes everyone’s voice seriously.

Coming to his ambassadorial post in the United States after appointments in Haiti, Uganda, and Mexico, Archbishop Pierre has distinguished himself in each of his assignments for his willingness to engage the poor as well as the rich, and especially to reach out to our sisters and brothers on the periphery.

In all his diplomatic assignments Archbishop Pierre has been an eloquent and effective witness of Pope Francis’ vision of a church “which is bruised, hurting and dirty because it has been out on the streets, rather than a church which is unhealthy from being confined and from clinging to its own security.” This outward, dynamic, and courageous vision of a church of missionary disciples preached by Archbishop Pierre is a church able to make a difference in society and work for reconciliation and peace.

HISPANIC THEOLOGY AND MINISTRY PROGR AM MARKS 35TH ANNIVERSARY

2018 marked the 35th anniversary year of CTU’s Hispanic Theology and Ministry Program with new initiatives, guided by director Dr. Carmen Nanko Fernandez, that continue to grow the outreach of HTMP, consistent with its founding mission to provide theological education that is historically, culturally, pastorally, and theologically situated in Latino contexts.

In addition to excellent extracurricular programming, during the past 15 years HTMP has expanded academically to include a certificate in HTM, an MA-HTM, and a DMin with HTM concentration.

The Association of Theological Schools granted CTU approval to offer the MAHTM, waiving the student residency requirement. This action means that the MA-HTM is the first CTU degree program with a distance education option to be taken entirely online, opening access to this critical certificate and degree program to a broader universe of future ministers.

In addition, under the leadership of Eddie DeLeón, CMF, Assistant Professor of Pastoral Ministry and Preaching, a certificate aimed at preparing ministers to preach within Hispanic communities was developed: Certificado en Predicación Católica, with courses available in Spanish and in English.

Lastly, with the hopes of encouraging new generations of Hispanics to pursue graduate studies in ministry and theology, CTU and Dominican University inaugurated a coordinated program whereby qualified students may obtain a Bachelor of Arts degree at Dominican and an MA-HTM at CTU in an accelerated timeline.

50TH COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY WELCOMES SPEAKER, AWARDS HONOR ARY DEGREES

At the 50th commencement ceremony on May 24, CTU conferred an Honorary Doctorate in Theology to Sr. Katarina Schuth, OSF, for 40 years of commitment to excellence in theological education — 27 of those at the University of St. Thomas where she taught classes in Pastoral Ministry, World Religion, and American Religion. She is a world-renowned authority on theological education, as well as religious formation and preparation of Church leaders. CTU has also benefited greatly from her leadership as Sr. Katarina served on its Board of Trustees from 1999 to 2010 and is a charter member of the Bernardin Center Advisory Board and Cardinal Joseph Bernardin’s Catholic Common Ground Initiative.

In addition, the 2018 Honorary Doctorate in Ministry was conferred upon Msgr. Arturo Bañuelas, a priest of the Diocese of El Paso, Texas, where he serves as pastor of St. Mark’s Parish. CTU honored Msgr. Bañuelas for his tireless work and advocacy on behalf of migrants and refugees, border culture, and border justice issues. In addition, CTU saluted Msgr. Bañuelas’ legacy as an educator and theologian. In 1988, he founded the Tepeyac Institute, one of the largest centers in the nation training lay people for parish ministry and leadership in the Church, as well as in his leadership of the Academy of Catholic Hispanic Theologians of the United States.
