In anticipation of the 50th anniversary of its 1968 founding, Catholic Theological Union undertook a process of strengthening its commitment to its vibrant history and mission and refreshing its visual identity while anticipating the changing landscape of ministry in the 21st century. That process engaged representatives of CTU’s Corporation, as well as faculty, administration, alumni, and students.

The Seal of CTU — the image you know and have seen for many years — is still an integral part of the school and its identity. However, for our external communications moving forward, we will use a complementary, updated look.

The new symbol (above) shows an array of distinctive shapes, demonstrating CTU’s diversity, coming together to form a cross in the central space. Like our global Church, this balanced, yet dynamic visual motif embodies our mission to reach beyond boundaries, to the world.

ow more than ever, an excellent theological education is vital to sustaining today’s Church and building the future Church. The lay and religious men and women studying at Catholic Theological Union are the next generation of hope for spreading Christ’s good news of justice, love, and peace in the world. Since its founding, CTU has empowered more than 4,000 alumni to become agents of reconciliation. In their work, both within and beyond the Church, they bring the best of the Roman Catholic tradition to situations of conflict and adversity here in Chicago, throughout the United States, and around the world.

From the Chair

This year all of us know, with a certainty we once could not have imagined, that racial tension is an explosive force in our cities, that political polarization is ruining our governance structure, and that state-sanctioned violence is competing with natural disasters for the status of greatest threat to humankind. Now more than ever, leaders with a level of wisdom and strength to become what Pope Francis calls “agents of reconciliation” are needed in our hurting world.

Catholic Theological Union trains its graduates to be just such agents of peacemaking and justice-making. The diversity of gifts and human experiences and the scholarly rigor encountered at CTU equip our alumni to deeply and accurately perceive the world’s needs and go out to meet them.

So despite the genuine challenges of the current moment, now is a time of great optimism for each of us at CTU. More than ever, our mission is clear: to prepare leaders for the Church who are ready to effectively witness to Christ’s good news of justice, love, and peace. From our founding almost 50 years ago, CTU has grown to be a premier school of theology and ministry, sponsored by 24 religious communities of men and earning a global reputation for academic and pastoral excellence. This year, CTU leadership, staff and faculty undertook a strategic planning process, determining our areas of focus and imagining our successes throughout the next three years. Inspiring that planning process is our newly stated vision statement:

President’s Message

W

e are fast approaching the 50th anniversary of Catholic Theological Union, which will be celebrated during the school’s 2018/19 academic year. This past year our graduate school of theology and ministry set the foundational priorities — and the real work of putting in place the tools and the framework — to support a new strategic plan.

Over the next three years, CTU will focus on three priorities: growing enrollment, enhancing academic excellence, and building strategic capabilities.

These will ensure that CTU programs not only remain available, but expand our reach to many more who wish to serve the local and global Church.

As Pope Francis has often indicated, there is a dramatic need — now more than ever — in today’s Church for gifted and dedicated religious and lay ecclesial ministers to inspire other Catholics to live out the faith in a courageous and joyful way. CTU is uniquely positioned to answer this need by offering our resources for preparing both ordained and lay ministers to serve the Church and the world.

For that reason, our first strategic priority will be to expand enrollment, focusing on both traditional and new types of students. Instrumental to this will be our ability to build and offer more scholarship funding to assist lay people in studying at CTU. Scholarships are especially important to those lacking financial resources, which includes the Latino/a and AfricanAmerican communities.

In seeking to attract a greater number of qualified new students to CTU, we also will seek to expand our student base through online offerings. This past year we continued to invest to improve awareness and the reach of our distance education offerings. Distance learning makes our excellent programs and courses available to students who cannot make the journey to study in Chicago — especially in those areas of the country that do not have immediate access to Catholic universities or serious programs of preparation for ministry.

ENHANCE ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

BUILD STR ATEGIC CAPABILITIES

Our second strategic priority is one that accrues to all institutions of higher learning as they build their reputation: enhancing academic excellence. For CTU this will mean new strategies to invest in the development of our faculty; to create select certificates to enhance and feed into our current degree programs; to promote the study of consecrated life; and to develop an integrated strategic plan for the Bernardin Center at CTU.

Our third priority will be to build our foundational capabilities in the areas of marketing and communications, enrollment operations, development, and administration and finance. This past year I appointed a special task force representing all areas of our school to work with the Marketing and Communications team to refresh the CTU brand — whose overall look is expressed in the design of this Annual Report. More than just a look, the brand identity expresses the essence of our vision and mission with messaging that will resonate with CTU’s many constituencies.

Our Enrollment Management team has made great strides in streamlining both the application process and the complex journey that interested students undertake — both here within the United States and abroad — to join our community of scholars. CTU’s development and finance teams this past year have identified and implemented new technologies to improve both the donor and student experiences.

his past year was indeed a busy one, marked by exciting new initiatives and transitions to new programs, platforms, and leadership. Whether affecting our curriculum or giving witness to the core values of this institution, our advances underscore CTU’s unique position as a truly international graduate school of theology and ministry. Our creative response to our mission rededicates us to a vision of Church that prepares religious order candidates for priesthood and empowers lay people, and men and women religious, to effectively share the good news of Jesus Christ in a pluralistic and multi-religious world. Three initiatives in particular stand out: the completion of a rigorous revision of our curriculum and academic calendar; the scope and breadth of community outreach through the public programs, academic lectures and symposia managed by CTU’s centers; and a remarkable 2017 annual Blessed Are the Peacemakers Trustee Dinner that celebrated inspiring international and local peacemakers in a world so sorely in need of them.

REVISED CURRICULUM AND ACADEMIC CALENDAR

Under the leadership of Barbara Reid, OP, Vice President and Academic Dean, the faculty successfully completed a revision of CTU’s curriculum and academic calendar to better respond to the needs of our students, all the while being faithful to the Program of Priestly Formation of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. I wish to express my deep appreciation for our faculty’s extraordinary dedication to a multiyear process. The new curriculum is now more flexible, allowing Master of Divinity students a greater number of electives. This makes it possible for us to make more available CTU’s outstanding programs of inter-religious dialogue and access to both our Jewish and Muslim scholars. The new curriculum encompasses our Master of Arts in Pastoral Ministry degree as well as the Master of Arts degrees in six specialized ministries.

The new academic calendar in effect for 2017/18 now provides a less intense third period of study that will take place over five weeks in April and May. This new “May term” replaces the former “J” (for January) term and increases convenience for both resident and commuter students.

EXPANDED COMMUNIT Y OUTREACH

Both the Bernardin Center and the Center for the Study of Consecrated Life were active throughout the 2016/17 academic year in sponsoring a variety of lectures and symposia. CTU served as a sponsoring partner of the first national USCCB Catholic-Muslim Dialogue in Chicago, which garnered significant news coverage in the local and national Catholic press.

Its success fueled momentum for public dialogues and discussion that followed. This included the Bernardin Center’s ongoing “In Good Faith” conversation series, which drew a packed house of Christians, Jews, and Muslims to respond to the question, “Are justice, healing and reconciliation possible in Trump’s America?” This event was filmed for later television broadcast, expanding its dialogue beyond the walls of our campus.

Our Sundays at CTU united old and new friends to reflect on contemporary issues. Professor Chris Tirres of DePaul University spoke of the Latino/a presence in United States Catholicism, while Mary Meg McCarthy, CTU Board of Trustee member and Executive Director of the National Immigrant Justice Center, offered profound reflections on the plight of immigrants in our country. To mark the 20th anniversary of the death of Cardinal Joseph Bernardin, and in partnership with the Bernardin Center, Professor Kevin Ahearn of Manhattan College spoke on “Being Church in a Divided World: The Legacy of Cardinal Joseph Bernardin for the 21st Century.” Cardinal Joseph Bernardin’s close associate, Msgr. Ken Velo, presided and preached at the Eucharist that followed. Adjunct Professor Sr. Joann Jaruko Doi, MM recounted the history of the shameful removal of Japanese-Americans to camps during World War II.

HONORING CONTRIBUTIONS TO PEACE

This past year CTU was able to honor the contributions of several remarkable people. At our Blessed are the Peacemakers annual Trustees Dinner, we were delighted to highlight the outstanding contribution of Dr. Monica McWilliams, international peace advocate and one of the instrumental negotiators in the Good Friday Accords that brought peace to Northern Ireland. That evening we also honored a great friend to CTU, Rev. Dennis Holtschneider, CM, outgoing President of DePaul University, whose tenure was especially marked by an outreach to under-served students on the part of DePaul, the largest Catholic University in the United States. Commencement this year featured two wonderful honorees: Rev. Ronald Rolheiser, OMI, the President of Oblate School of Theology and well-known expert in Spirituality; and Sr. Simone Campbell, SSS, Executive Director of the NETWORK Lobby for Catholic Social Justice.
