On behalf of the Board of Trustees of Catholic Theological Union of Chicago, it is our pleasure to welcome you and thank you for your generosity in joining this celebration! For more than a quarter of a century, Blessed Are The Peacemakers has been a signature event in our city honoring international peacemaking and service to community. CTU’s mission is to educate and prepare men and women to be effective leaders for the Church, ready to witness to Christ’s good news of justice, love, and peace. Founded in 1968 in the renewed spirit and vision of the Second Vatican Council, CTU has grown to be one of the largest Roman Catholic graduate schools of theology and ministry in the United States. Today, one in every six religious order priests ordained in the United States is a CTU graduate. CTU alumni number nearly 4,000, serving the Church across the United States and in more than 60 countries worldwide. They work in parishes, homeless shelters, prisons, hospitals, schools, colleges and universities, gang ministry, hospices, social service organizations, and a myriad of other ministry settings. CTU is blessed with a rich diversity reflecting the global Church: our current student body representing more than 35 countries worldwide; religious order seminarians, women religious, lay women and men — students of all ages and backgrounds. Our distinguished Catholic faculty also includes scholars from the Jewish and Muslim traditions. Over the years, CTU’s programs have expanded to address the inter-cultural needs of the Church in an increasingly global society. Through scholarships, seminars, lectures, and a full array of programs, the ideas and spirituality of Cardinal Joseph Bernardin continue to flourish at CTU’s Bernardin Center. The Center maintains a focus on Cardinal Bernardin’s signature issues, including reconciliation and peacemaking, leadership development for the Church, inter-religious dialogue, the consistent ethic of life, and the Catholic Common Ground Initiative. BLESSED ARE THE PEACEMAKERS Catholic Theological Union is honored to bestow this, our highest honor to Monica McWilliams for her tireless witness for peace in Northern Ireland, her efforts to combat domestic violence, and her current involvement with the pressing humanitarian crisis of international refugees. The award is presented annually to an individual or institution whose accomplishments and commitments embody the mission of CTU, particularly in the areas of reconciliation, justice, and peacemaking.
DIAKONIA Catholic Theological Union is honored to bestow our annual Diakonia award to Rev. Dennis Holtschneider, CM, President of DePaul University, given to outstanding local leaders who have given exemplary service to the larger Chicago community. Fr. Dennis was chosen for his superb record as chief administrator of DePaul University; for his cultivation of an alliance between our two institutions; for his untiring work for inter-religious dialogue in Chicago; and for DePaul’s attention to DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) students in higher education, exemplifying the best of Catholic social teaching.
The peacemakers, those who put an end to violence, who lay down the sword, who work for harmonious relationships, who break the patterns of hatred, who love even their enemies, will be called ‘children of God,’ the ultimate blessing.
