think it’s fair to say that most people will be glad to see the back of 2020.

But what does 2021 have in store for the electrotechnical industry?

As I write this piece, it has just been announced that trials of a number of COVID-19 vaccinations are under way and perhaps we can look forward to seeing, if not the end of COVID, at least the beginning of the end, which is great news for us all.

The industry does have a history of rising to challenges and meeting them head on.

However, we are facing perhaps the most challenging of times, not just because of a pandemic but also the unknown outcomes of Brexit.

So, why the cause for optimism? Well, it’s been great to see the number of new apprentices recruited this year reach more than 500. While down on the initial recruitment target, the fact that so many young people are joining our industry and so many employers are willing to offer apprenticeships in such challenging times is fantastic news.

It’s obvious that the

Scottish Government recognises the importance of construction in leading the way to a recovery and the importance that the electrotechnical industry will have in such a recovery. As we increasingly move towards an electric-driven economy, it is vital that Members look to secure the undoubted opportunities which will come their way.

There are signs that there is a move towards a fairer and more transparent procurement and payment process. Member businesses have continued to face challenges over getting paid on time and in full, even during the pandemic. A number of clients have even introduced so-called “COVID clauses” into their contracts, making it even more difficult to tender while knowing the real risks you may face.

Any change in making the process fair is to be very much welcomed.

The pandemic has also led to a more cooperative approach in the industry. The formation of the Construction Industry Coronavirus (CICV) Forum, which is a collective of trade and professional bodies which operate in Scotland,

Goodbye and good riddance to 2020, but 2021 brings reason for optimism was a significant step forward in the sector.

The Forum gathers intelligence, shares advice and speaks directly with government on issues affecting members in the current crisis. As well as the main Forum, a number of sub-groups also work on issues such as employment and skills, health and safety, business recovery and commercial matters. More than 100 people are contributing to the work

being done and it is amazing to see so many different groups and individuals working in a cooperative and collaborative way with the sole aim of helping the construction industry recover from the crisis.

Finally, it does appear that we are heading towards some form of regulated electrotechnical industry in Scotland. Two consultations have been launched in 2020, with the aim of introducing legislative protection for

consumers to ensure that the electricians they use are qualified, trained and competent. It’s been a long journey to get where we are, but the end of the tunnel can at least be seen.

So, there is still lots to do, but there are lots of things to be optimistic about as we enter 2021.

In the meantime, I wish all readers of CABLEtalk a safe and healthy Christmas and a positive 2021.

As a Member for many years, I already knew that SELECT always stepped up when needed, but this year has taken that performance to a whole new level.

Whether it’s refunding subscriptions, helping with complex employment advice or even just listening to concerns with a sympathetic phone call, SELECT and its staff and office bearers have risen

to the COVID-19 challenge superbly.

While others closed their doors, SELECT once again demonstrated the true value of trade associations and proved that, as a not-for-profit organisation, it is driven by the welfare of its Members, not commercial gain.

The spirit of commitment, collaboration and cooperation has shone through and I just want to extend my personal thanks to our Central Board, Past Presidents, Honorary Members and each individual member of staff.

I also want to thank you, our Members, for your patience,

understanding and resilience.

As SELECT worked hard behind the scenes, you responded with equal professionalism to keep things going across Scotland.

Such determination has seen us come this far and will no doubt continue into 2021 when we can hopefully return to normal – whatever that normal may be.

Raising a glass to everyone

O

ffice bearers and staff raised a glass to SELECT at the final Central Board meeting of 2020, which was once again held online due to COVID-19.

President Donald W Orr proposed a toast to Members, staff and Past Presidents at the end of the webinar on Wednesday 2 December, which was attended by senior SELECT staff and 15 Central Board members via the Zoom platform.

Donald said: “I’d like to acknowledge the dedication and professionalism of all our Members this year, as well as the SELECT staff who have all worked so tirelessly to support them and help them through what has been a truly unprecedented 12 months.

“It’s only fitting that we also recognise the ongoing contribution of our Past Presidents and Honorary Past Presidents, who continue to represent the association on

our behalf.” The association also donated 12 bottles of special SELECT-branded single malt to Past Presidents in lieu of the annual Christmas lunch, which became another casualty of coronavirus restrictions.

Whisky was sent to Richard Allan, Kevin Griffin, Archie Jay, Douglas Kelly, Hamish McDonald, John Noble, Eric Rae, Alick Smith, David Smith and Ricky Wilson, as well as Honorary Past Presidents Newell McGuiness and Michael Goodwin, along with a personal message and update on the year’s achievements from Donald and Managing Director Alan Wilson.

Donald said: “The Past Presidents’ Christmas lunch is always a highlight of the year, so in its absence we thought this was a fitting gesture.

“Our Past Presidents continue to perform an essential and much-valued role, and this wee dram goes some way to recognising that.”

Subscription rates frozen for next year ● ● ●

Member businesses won’t face fee rise in 2021 Move comes after three-month refund issued Support will continue during challenges ahead

SELECT has chosen not to increase subscription rates for 2021, in a further move to help Members cope with the financial challenges caused by COVID-19.

Subscription rates for the next 12 months will stay the same as for 2020 for all Member businesses, and follows the three-month subscription refund issued

by SELECT earlier this year.

John McGhee, Director of Resources and Association Secretary, said: “As a not-forprofit organisation, we are here to put our Members’ needs first, so once again, that’s exactly what we are doing.

“It was decided by Central Board and agreed at the AGM in September that there would be no increases to the subscription rates in 2021, and we are happy to roll this out to help Member firms of all sizes across Scotland.

“In addition, this year’s turnover declaration forms have been sent out and we encourage Members to advise us of any change or expected change in their turnover due to the COVID pandemic as we want to ensure that Members pay the correct amount of subscription.”

The move follows the decision earlier this year to issue a 30% discount on 2020 subscription fees, with a total of £329,405 refunded.

Members who had already paid their subscription in full received the money back, with those choosing to pay by John McGhee

Direct Debit having only seven of the 10 instalments collected.

John added: “Measures like this are unprecedented, but we continue to live in unprecedented times and we believe it’s right to offer as much financial assistance as possible to our Members.

“Keeping subscription fees the same for one year is another small step to helping contractors everywhere, and SELECT will continue to ensure that it does as much as possible to support its Members in a host of different ways.”

The new move is among a number of measures that SELECT has introduced to help Members through the pandemic, including online training, advice webinars and a dedicated COVID-19 hub. The association is also playing a leading role in the Construction Industry Coronavirus (CICV) Forum.

SELECT Managing Director Alan Wilson said: “This financial assistance is the latest in a host of measures we have taken to ensure our Members are fully supported.

This support will continue long after the pandemic has subsided, as we continue to put the needs of our Members first.”

Cost of medical insurance kept at 2020 levels In addition to the subscriptions freeze, SELECT’s private medical insurance partner has agreed to keep the rates for its scheme at 2020 levels.

EC Insurance Services Ltd (ECIS) has announced that its renewal rates will be held at current levels for SELECT Members for the next 12 months.

ECIS Operations Director Hugh Wright said: “As a valued partner, we are happy to keep our renewal rates the same for Members to help ease any financial burden caused by the pandemic.”

Under the scheme, ECIS arranges cover under a private medical insurance scheme, with all benefits compliant with the terms and conditions laid down by the Scottish Joint Industry Board (SJIB).

As well as the existing medical benefits, two new remote skin and rapid cardiac assessment services are also being launched to enable people to access treatment as soon as possible.

ELECT has cautiously welcomed a proposed one-year delay to new rules on domestic smoke alarms – but says Holyrood needs to roll out a major awareness campaign on the guidelines in the meantime.

The association says it understands why First Minister Nicola Sturgeon is set to postpone the requirement that all homes should have linked heat and smoke alarms, as well carbon monoxide alarms where appropriate, until February 2022.

But it added that the issue remains a serious safety consideration and said that it was imperative that householders were made aware of the importance of professional installation so that they could plan ahead and get the precautions in place as soon as possible.

Managing Director Alan Wilson said: “We recognise that in the current climate, some homeowners may be reluctant to have tradespeople in their home to carry out any work that needs to be done.

“However, we also know that there was still a degree of uncertainty and misinformation among some homeowners, and more could have been done to raise awareness of the facts on a national level. Hopefully with the additional time we now have, that can be rectified with a clear government information campaign.”

Online goodbye to Jim after 18yrs SELECT held two virtual farewell parties for Technical and Safety Adviser Jim Cornwall, who retired in October after 18 years with the association.

More than 30 colleagues took part in a special webinar on 29 October to say their goodbyes to Jim, who started at SELECT on 1 April 2002.

Among the gifts he received was a bottle of his favourite Macallan whisky, a set of engraved glasses, restaurant vouchers and a special CABLEtalk front cover.

SELECT’s Edinburgh and South East of Scotland Branch also held an online get-together for Jim on 5 November, presenting him with more whisky and vouchers and a decanter set, with tributes led by Branch Chair Graeme Anderson.

Dave Forrester, Director of Technical Services, said: “We are extremely sad to see Jim go as he has played such a huge part in SELECT’s unique service to Members.

“His dedication, professionalism and attention to detail have been greatly valued by both his colleagues and Members and we wish him a well-

Inspection role renewed

by UKAS SELECT has once again successfully renewed accreditation with the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) for its inspection activities.

Accreditation against the internationally recognised standard for inspection bodies ISO/IEC 17020:2012 means the association continues to be officially recognised for the quality of its electrical installation inspection service.

This year’s UKAS assessment was once again coordinated by Malcolm Duncan, Training and Development Adviser and Quality Assurance Manager, with support from members of the Technical and Training teams.

Malcolm said: “We are delighted to have been approved by UKAS for the 23rd year. Accreditation is extremely important to us, our Members and the public and provides confidence that our inspections are being considered properly.”

In order for accreditation to be maintained, SELECT has been subject to rigorous annual assessments since first attaining accredited status in 1998.

UKAS is the only UK national accreditation body, which is recognised by the government to assess, against internationally agreed standards, organisations that provide certification, testing, inspection and calibration services.

NEWS ROUND-UP SJIB support for title protection The SJIB also added its voice to the regulation consultation, saying that protection of title would “significantly enhance consumer, client and public protection and safety while deterring unqualified individuals”.

Commenting in its own detailed response, Fiona Harper, The Secretary of the SJIB, said: “The promotion and utilisation of registered electrical contractors with industry-recognised qualifications would address the scale of poorly installed, defective and unsafe electrical work.

“The SJIB already administers the ECS [Electrotechnical Certification Scheme] which accommodates and recognises the diverse array of electricians operating within the electrotechnical industry.

“With some additional safeguards, the SJIB could develop a very robust scheme at little additional cost.”

Fiona, who is also Director of Employment and Skills at SELECT, added: “SJIB electricians frequently voice their concerns and frustration that individuals who have not met the established national and industry standards and are not qualified electricians are able to use the title of electrician.

“In what is such a highly-skilled and safety-critical occupation, this situation should be rectified and the title of electrician should be protected.”

Making our voices heard

ELECT’s Managing Director has issued a personal thank-you to the many SELECT Member firms who made their voices heard in the recent consultation on regulation of the electrical industry.

Alan Wilson said he was pleased to see so many contractors answer the call and respond to the parliamentary consultation, which closed on 10 November with a total of 141 submissions.

He said: “It was heartening to see so many SELECT Member businesses add their comments to this vital consultation and have their say on the future of our industry.

“It’s pleasing to see so many people calling for protection of title for individual operatives in Scotland, in order that we can assure the public that anyone who presents themselves as an electrician is appropriately qualified and registered.

“As a sector, regulation of electricians affects each and every one of us, and seeing so many Members putting their names forward will help us continue the battle to protect our industry.

In its own response, SELECT said regulation would help reduce death and injury, bring significant economic benefits and encourage more women and minorities to take up the tools.

Alan said: “Our research suggests net benefits to Scotland from proper regulation of electricians of around £58million, including the benefits of higher electrical standards, such as fewer injuries and deaths, better functioning installations, less need for call backs or for poor/unsafe work to be repaired, leading to improved customer satisfaction.”

Alan also pointed out in the consultation response that there was already a mechanism in place for registering individuals via the Scottish Joint Industry Board (SJIB) and that a robust scheme could be developed at very little additional cost.

He said: “A single register based on the existing SJIB model would provide the comfort and security that someone calling themselves an electrician was qualified and competent to undertake electrical work. It would also enhance the profession’s status and reputation

to give greater protection to the public and reduce the level of poor electrical workmanship by a persistent rogue trader element”.

Alan Wilson said: “This is another great opportunity for the

The reach of our digital classroom has spread far and wide over the past few months, with delegates now tuning in from around the world to keep up to speed with our courses

f COVID-19 has seen one major development, it’s been the rise of digital meetings and online business – and our training courses have been no different.

With lessons in physical classrooms currently not possible, many of our most popular courses have moved to the internet, with the subsequent e-learning sessions becoming a vital resource for Members living and working outside Scotland.

Training Manager Jenny Cryans revealed the team has received requests for remote learning from all four corners of the globe, with Members logging in to our special GoToTraining classroom to take part in courses delivered by our Technical Advisers.

She said: “Over the past nine months, we’ve seen a rise in people working

overseas who want to join our online training and enjoy the freedom and flexibility of the virtual classroom.

“The 218 course in Requirements for Electrical Installations has proved particularly popular, with several Scottish electricians phoning from abroad to arrange a virtual module.

“We had a delegate complete his 18th Edition course from Switzerland, where he was isolating before starting a job out there. We also organised for a delegate to connect in from his holiday home in Spain, where he was staying during lockdown, and we’ve had someone tune in from the Canary Islands who said his internet connection was better there than in the UK!” Training Administrator Fiona

Robertson added: “Last month I spoke to a delegate in Russia who wanted to arrange an 18th Edition course, as well as a worker on a rig off the coast of Mexico who was enquiring about a virtual session in November.

So far, SELECT has delivered 101 online courses since lockdown started on 23 March, with 587 delegates trained via the SELECT e-classroom.

As well as delegates in foreign countries, the virtual classroom has been eagerly embraced by electrical

professionals who may have recently returned to Scotland and require an update to their knowledge.

Fiona added: “Throughout the pandemic, we’ve had a lot of calls from people who have been working away on the rigs for ten years or more and have now had to come home because of COVID-19.

“Some have seen their grade cards lapse so have been in touch with the Scottish Joint Industry Board (SJIB) for advice, and we’ve then organised the training required.

“Not having to travel and being able to take these courses from the comfort of their own home has made it easier for them and has been much appreciated.”

Fiona added: “We had one delegate who had been away for 15 years and contacted us as he was worried about trying to get back to work. His main concern was getting his 18th Edition BS 7671 qualification, so we arranged for him to take our online course.

“He said the course was well executed and it was great to get his results back so soon, and also thanked everyone at SELECT for getting it all organised at short notice.

“Hearing feedback like that is excellent and it’s good to know we’re helping delegates with whatever training they need, wherever they may be in the world.”

As the pandemic continues, we’ve launched a new way to sign up with SELECT. Matt Ayre, one of our first Conditional Members, reveals how he’s already been helped by joining us

Matt’s been kept busy since the lockdown lifted

he COVID-19 restrictions might still be in place, but it hasn’t stopped new Members joining SELECT. Matt Ayre was one of the first people to sign up using our innovative Conditional Membership scheme. The process makes sure that firms can still join and access our support while the usual in-person assessments are suspended.

And since signing up, Matt’s already discovered the benefits of being part of Scotland’s largest construction trade association. He said: “I was told about SELECT by other electricians who recommended joining. One of the main reasons I joined was the technical advice and when I called for guidance I got answers straight away. There’s always someone on the phone and the person who helped me really knew his stuff.”

As a Conditional Member, Matt undertook a virtual assessment online with SELECT Technical Adviser Stuart McKelvie. Matt explained: “Normally an assessor would come to site and you’d show them round, but this time I sent pictures of my work instead. In the month before I joined I made sure I took photos of the jobs I was doing so I’d be able to show as much as I could.

the spot. Stuart’s a nice guy and easy to get on with as well, which helped.

Going digital

and since the initial coronavirus lockdown was lifted in summer, he’s seen a big surge in his workload as people spend on home improvements.

He said: “During lockdown I had to turn down work because I couldn’t get hold of materials. But I’ve been really busy lately. There’s not a lot of electricians where I am so there’s always a lot on the go. I do everything – domestic, commercial, agricultural, landlord reports, you name it.

“The domestic work has been really busy with a lot of people getting extensions and new kitchens. They’re not going on holiday so they’re spending money on their house instead.”

Helping hand

While his business is booming, Matt’s been able to help someone else continue their career in the industry by taking on an apprentice who had been made redundant because of effects of the pandemic.

“Before lockdown I’d spoken to the local college about taking on an apprentice,” he said. “Afterwards they got in touch to ask if I could take on someone who was being laid off.

“I wasn’t sure at first because I didn’t know much work I’d having coming in.

But over the next few days my phone never stopped ringing. I took him on for a two-week trial and he’s been with me four or five months now.

“He’s in his third year and that helps

me because as he’s not at college as much, he can spend more time working with me.”

The COVID precautions mean Matt’s had to adapt how he works to make sure he and his customers stay safe.

He always has wipes, sprays and masks in his van, as well as a spray to clean his tools between each job.

“The biggest issue has been getting deliveries,” he said. “Getting some materials is still taking longer than it usually would. The nearest wholesaler to me is an hour and a half away so it can be a challenge.

“I’ve had to explain the delays to customers and most of them are fine.

Matt’s also signed up to SELECTcerts, our digital certification system, which he’s now using it to save time on admin.

“I love it and have even bought an iPad for doing my certificates,” he said.

“I used to have to write them out and then write them out again more neatly.

“Now I just do it once and send it straight to the customer so it saves me time.

“I had a couple of little software issues at the start but it’s fine now and I’ve got the technical numbers saved if I ever need any support.”

While COVID means it’s hard for anyone to predict what 2021 will bring, Matt’s remaining upbeat about the future.

He said: “Maybe 2021 will be quiet because everyone has already spent their money getting work done on their houses in 2020.

“But hopefully things will get back to normal sooner rather than later and people will always want kitchens or need things fixing.

“I’ve also got a lot of contracts with hotels, shops, care homes and farms so hopefully they’ll help to keep me busy.”

In the bleak For many people, the financial pressures of Christmas will only add to the stress caused by the ongoing impact of COVID-19. Fortunately, the Electrical Industries Charity is continuing to offer the practical assistance that has already helped many through the pandemic

F

or the one in four people in the UK who struggle with their mental health, Christmas can be a trying time – not least with the added pressures of COVID-19.

Christmas can mark the beginning of a downward spiral for those who are struggling to keep their finances afloat, or who may be feeling isolated, have social anxiety, are recovering from addiction or are away from their families and friends.

Such pressures have been magnified over the last nine months due to the ongoing uncertainty of COVID-19, which is why this year’s festive season will seem more of a hindrance than a holiday for some.

Within the electrical and energy

sector, suicide rates are already 2.7 times the national average, with the Electrical Industries Charity (EIC) dealing with 44 suicides in 2019 and receiving 564 reports of sector colleagues attempting to take their own life.

While huge steps have been taken within the industry to champion positive mental health within the workplace – including the charity itself training more than 10,000 people in mental health awareness – COVID-19 has meant a lot of those who may have made improvements with their mental health are now struggling again.

His 25-year-old son had unexpectedly passed away in his sleep and the cause of death was diagnosed as 18

COVID-19. Graham and his wife were incredibly distressed, shocked and confused, so the EIC sourced and funded a block of bereavement therapy sessions, delivered virtually.

After completing the sessions, the couple have continued to self-fund the therapy, saying the support has been “invaluable”.

“During the pandemic, a lot of our colleagues have been furloughed and had to survive on 80% of their wage, and some others may have been made redundant with the adjustments to the

debtors. Mo was helped to create plans with each creditor to pay back only what he could afford during this period.

He’s now returned to work, increased his repayments and is looking forward to being debt-free.

CORONAVIRUS TRAVEL ANIMATION

P

roduced in response to sector feedback, SELECT has helped bring to life a range of practical measures to keep contractors safe from COVID-19 while commuting, and also protect colleagues, customers, friends and family.

The animation reminds workers to travel alone if possible, to open windows and turn off air conditioning systems and to clean all touchable surfaces in cars or vans.

If workers must share, it instructs them to wear a face covering and sit apart, and emphasises the importance of sharing with the same people on all travel journeys.

As well as private vehicles, the animation also gives essential guidance on using public transport safely, including reminders to avoid rush hour, observe physical distancing, carry hand sanitiser and try to use contactless payments where possible.

The animation was developed by Iain Mason, Director of Membership and Communications at SELECT, in partnership with design agency Connect Communications.

Iain, who is also Chair of the Forum’s Communications sub-group, said: “Since the start of the Forum, our animations have proved very popular and have been an extremely effective tool, helping us to deliver vital messaging to as wide an audience as possible.

Better safe Safe isolation saves lives, yet it’s still not always carried out. As part of a six-page special highlighting why it’s so vital, we speak to Louise Taggart, who has campaigned about the issue since losing her brother in an electrical incident

W

hile the dangers of COVID are at the forefront of everyone’s mind, the other risks in our industry

haven’t gone away.

It’s not just self-isolation that needs to be remembered, but also SAFE isolation – the life-saving procedure that ensures electrical circuits and equipment can be worked on safely.

Louise Taggart has campaigned tirelessly to raise awareness of the issue since her brother Michael Adamson was killed when he cut a cable marked ‘Not in use’ that hadn’t been safely isolated.

Two recent fatalities in England and Northern Ireland have once again shown the deadly consequences of contact with electricity – 15 years after Michael tragically lost his life.

Changing the mindset

Despite the obvious dangers, some people still mistakenly believe, ‘It won’t happen to me’. Louise said: “Some people seem to think they’re bulletproof and don’t think about the consequences for other people.

“I’ve seen people say, ‘Well it’s only me working on these circuits’, but what about the person who’s going to get a phone call from the police to tell them that you won’t be coming home? What about your spouse or parents having to organise your funeral and visit your grave? There can be an attitude of, ‘It’s 22

never going to get me’ but it only needs to get you once and you won’t come back from it. It’s heart-breaking that people are still losing their lives. All of these deaths are preventable.”

Part of the problem comes from people falling into bad habits, then passing them on to apprentices and colleagues. Louise explained: “When there’s not positive reinforcement of the correct way to do it and why, then people can slide into bad habits.

“In the domestic game, people often work alone. But just because you don’t have someone looking over your shoulder, it doesn’t mean you can cut corners. We need to shift the mindset.”

MICHAEL’S STORY Experienced electrician Michael Adamson was just 26 when he died in a preventable electrical incident.

He cut a cable marked ‘Not in use’ which hadn’t been safely isolated and was instead terminated into a distribution board.

His employers had issued a method statement that said equipment “should be isolated and secured by means of a padlock” before work. However, devices for lock-off/tag-out weren’t provided and instead, the on-site practice was to use insulating tape.

Michael’s employer was later found guilty of health and safety offences and fined £300,000.

Training focus

One of the ways Louise believes the problem could be tackled is by taking a more proactive approach to training and putting more of a focus on preventing incidents from happening.

“I would like mandatory refresher training required and a more regular reminder would be useful,” she said.

“People tend to go on training courses in response to an incident – a near miss or serious occurrence – and you don’t want that to be the case. You want it to be a proactive thing so these types of incident don’t ever happen.”

The events surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic have introduced new workplace risks that mean health and safety is more important than ever.

time to get back to their best. With the increased focus on COVID, it can also be easy to forget about other dangers.

Louise, a trustee of Scottish Hazards, is also aware of the toll the pandemic has taken on people’s mental wellbeing and that many are preoccupied with issues relating to COVID. With so many things on their mind, it can be difficult to focus fully on their job.

important, running back over the hazards that people face. It’s particularly important for apprentices who haven’t been at college for a while to make sure they’re being appropriately supervised.

“I’ve heard a lot of anecdotal evidence to suggest people are forgetting about the other hazards of the work because of COVID. It’s not about blaming workers, you have to think about whether people have been properly reinducted.”

WHAT IS SAFE ISOLATION? Safe isolation is a life-saving procedure that makes sure electrical circuits and equipment are safe before you start to work.

Most electrical incidents happen because

people work on or near equipment that’s either thought to be dead but it is actually live or is known to be live but the right precautions haven’t been taken.

That’s why it’s vital to

make sure there’s a system in place before any work starts on an electrical installation to establish that it is isolated and proved to be ‘dead’, i.e. has no electrical current running through it.

As the new year starts, Louise’s thoughts are already on how to continue the campaign to make workplaces safer and reduce the number of preventable accidents.

She said: “At Scottish Hazards, we’ve put together our manifesto calls for the Scottish Parliament elections next year, including a call about the regulation of electricians. I’m also going to see what more can be done about regular safe isolation refresher training.

“It’s about getting people to do it as a habit, like putting on your seatbelt when you get in a car. You do it every time so that you don’t miss it that crucial time when you should have done it.”

It may have been 15 years since Louise’s family lost Michael, but their grief is still with them every day.

She said: “At Christmas this year there will be so many people who are missing from the table because of COVID and because they can’t come together as a family. But that’s what it’s like for us every year. It’s not just Michael who’s missing, he would have been married by now and might have had children.

They’re all missing from the table.”

ELECT is launching a major safe isolation awareness campaign to help keep electricians and apprentices free from harm this winter.

Running under the banner ‘Work dead safely: Stay alive’, an engaging new animation, brochure and infographic have been produced to reinforce the importance of observing correct procedures.

The campaign – which will be launched in early 2021 to urge operatives to start the year safely – also graphically highlights the dangers of not isolating safely, with case studies of electricians who have been burned, scarred for life and even killed in preventable incidents.

he Scottish Electrical Charitable Training Trust (SECTT) has once again teamed up with Electrical Safety First (ESF) to provide free lockout kits to Scotland’s trainee electricians.

Now in its 12th year, the partnership saw SECTT training officers visit colleges and training centres across the country to hand out more than 650 of the £30 kits to 3rd Stage apprentices and adult trainees, observing physical distancing at all times.

Among the recipients at the giveaways in September and October were trainees at Ayrshire College, Ayr Campus, Dundee & Angus College and Perth College UHI, with other apprentices presented with their kits at all 21 SECTT Approved Centres.

The fight to get regulation right In a recent exclusive video interview with SELECT, MSP Jamie Halcro Johnston outlined why regulation of the industry is so vital – and why the recent consultation on his proposed Member’s Bill could finally help make it a reality Hi Jamie, how did you become interested in the issue of regulation?

It’s an issue I’ve been aware of for some time, even before I was an MSP. I knew that electrician wasn’t a regulated profession and that many people had concerns about it, so I was happy to take it forward. It’s a key issue and one that a lot of people aren’t aware of.

So why is regulation the answer to some of the issues facing today’s industry?

Electrical problems cause real issues such as fires, damage to homes, injury and even death, so there’s the safety issue for a start. But it’s about confidence and awareness too. A lot of consumers aren’t aware that if they see an advert for somebody claiming to be an electrician, they can’t know if that person has any qualifications. Most people just assume it’s already a regulated profession, so that’s why we need a clear and single register of electricians and perhaps a company-buyer single market so that consumers can feel confident that they’re getting somebody who’s got training. It’s also important that electricians are recognised for the huge amount of effort they put into their skills and training. We don’t want to put extra burden on electricians, so we’re not 28

looking for a complicated solution with extra red tape. We want a very simple approach that will allow electricians who are trained and are on this register to carry out their work easily.

How important was the consultation on regulation that recently closed?

Consultation is a very important step in the process of introducing a Member’s Bill. It allows MSPs from outside the government to show their support for

a particular issue, but is also a way that proposals can be discussed and scrutinised and any practical concerns raised. The consultation process is part of making sure that we get that proposal right – that’s why we wanted to hear from as many people as possible, including SELECT Members. To paraphrase someone far more famous than me, this is one small step, but it’s an important one.

What do you hope the Bill will achieve?

Protection of title will give consumers the confidence that the person they employ is an electrician who has the necessary qualifications. It also protects those electricians that have those qualifications and means that they will benefit by trust in the sector being improved. And of course, that means

If you’re not on the register you won’t be able to call yourself an electrician and legal enforcement will be in place.

Will regulating the profession make it more attractive to would-be electricians?

We know the profile of electricians is getting older, so having protection of title will hopefully make it a more attractive profession to some extent.

There has to be more encouragement for people from different backgrounds

and I hope any legislation will be accompanied by a real push to get more people into the sector.

So what are the next steps?

The responses from the consultation will all feed into our final proposal, and obviously we’ll need all MSPs to get behind the general principles.

Unfortunately, due to everything that’s going on at the moment, it’s not likely to go through parliament this session, but one of the most important things is taking those steps forward. If I’m returned next May, I hope I could pick up where we’ve got to, but if I can’t,

a huge amount of work will have been done and we’ll be a lot further forward, either for myself, another MSP or the government itself.

Finally, the SELECT Wall of Support shows a great many MSPs in favour of the Bill, so what are its chances?

There is support from all parties across the chamber, and there have always been warm words from the Scottish Government and a general appreciation that this needs to be done. It’s frustrating because if we had more time we would get it through, but I’m very confident that in the next session of parliament it will be picked up and will be achieved, which will be fantastic for the sector, for consumers and for electrical safety.

T

he 5th Edition of the IET’s In-Service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment gives updated guidance on procedures used to determine if electrical equipment is fit for continued use or whether maintenance is required, e.g. repair or replacement.

This revised edition takes a more considered approach to how electrical equipment maintenance is organised and attempts to reinforce best practice to those responsible for compliance with relevant statutory requirements, i.e. the electrical duty holder.

In particular, the demarcation that exists between the electrical equipment and the electrical installation has been highlighted in Section 4, ‘Equipment scope and the need for maintenance’.

This is an area where inspection and testing of fixed equipment is often not carried out because it has been overlooked during planning of the preventative maintenance work, i.e. it is not included in the extent of the periodic inspection and testing of the fixed electrical installation and not included in the equipment lists for ‘in-service inspection and testing’.

Terminology and specific equipment classifications previously used, such as portable and moveable, have also been removed in an attempt to move thinking away from the concept of ‘PAT testing’ and to reinforce that ‘in-service inspection and testing’ is applicable to all electrical equipment being used.

The most significant change however is probably removal of the guidance provided in Table 7.1, which gave the initial frequency of inspection and testing of equipment and was extensively used by those setting the frequency of in-service inspection and testing.

This should actually be decided using a risk assessment approach and is something that the duty holder should determine.

Guidance on risk assessment is provided in a new Section 11, ‘The frequency of in-service inspection and testing’, while examples of applying a risk assessment approach in a variety of small installations are provided in a new Appendix 9. Other minor changes

include a technical change to the classification of separated extra-low voltage (SELV) equipment.

This has been introduced to align with terminology used in product safety standards with new classifications of ES1, ES2 and ES3, which replace SELV, ELV and LV respectively. An explanation of these is provided in Appendix 3.

Some aspects of protective conductor continuity testing have also been clarified and guidance provided to help operatives select the most appropriate test current to avoid damaging sensitive equipment.

O

ne of the most significant differences in the new 5th Edition is the removal of Table 7.1, which provided guidance on the initial frequency of inspection and testing of equipment.

This has been commonly used by those who organise and carry out in-service inspection and testing of electrical equipment to determine how often electrical equipment such as hand-held and portable equipment should be checked to ensure its continuing safety and correct operation.

Table 7.1 was only ever intended to be used as initial guidance when establishing a maintenance programme for the equipment put into service in the workplace, and was never intended to be taken in any way as a legal requirement for ongoing maintenance purposes.

However, it has become commonplace to adopt the timescales given without further consideration to determining what the appropriate frequency for specific equipment might be. The duty holder should be considering the risks associated with use of the equipment and using the risk assessment approach that has been recommended since the Lofstedt Report and the introduction of the previous version of the Code of Practice (COP) in 2012.

This has probably resulted in a lot of unnecessary inspection and testing being undertaken in the workplace that would otherwise not be required, e.g. in some lower risk workplaces and

One of the many changes in the revised IET Code of Practice concerns the maintenance of electrical equipment and the frequency of inspection and test. We take a closer look at this new guidance and how it could affect your work

on some classes of equipment. It was therefore decided that the table should be removed during the recent revision.

Duty holders’ responsibilities

As in previous versions, it is highlighted in this version of the COP that it is the duty holder’s responsibility to ensure that adequate maintenance is carried out on the electrical systems under their control. This obviously includes all of the electrical equipment connected to the fixed wiring whether connected using a plug and socket-outlet or using a fixed connection point.

Carrying out maintenance as necessary will enable the duty holder to comply with Regulation 4 (2) of the Electricity at Work (EAW) Regulations 1989 and inspection and test programmes are normally implemented to help identify if maintenance is required or not.

However, the EAW Regulations do not specify how often electrical equipment needs to be assessed and the 5th Edition highlights this, stating: “There are no specified timescales in law or in the Code of Practice for the frequency of inspection and testing of electrical equipment.” To determine this, it says the duty holder should carry out a “robust risk assessment in all cases to evaluate the frequencies between inspection and testing of equipment”.

Risk assessment guidance

A risk assessment is typically defined as “a systematic process of evaluating the potential risk that may be involved in a projected activity or undertaking” and there is plenty of guidance available.

In the revised COP, it is highlighted that, if necessary, the duty holder can be supported by a competent person when assessing the frequency of inspection and testing, and it should be noted that there is not a definitive method of carrying out a risk assessment and that these need to be reviewed regularly to ensure control measures remain effective and relevant.

With this in mind, it may be useful to those undertaking risk assessment to look over the HSE Risk Assessment publication. This is available to download for free from the HSE website at www. hse.gov.uk/pubns/indg163.htm It is also recognised that in some work environments the risk profile may be more easily defined, e.g. a hotel or office where the skill of the user of equipment is known, the environment predictable and the range of equipment limited.

For those premises, the HSE document HSG107 may be an appropriate reference for the duty holder and competent persons involved in the risk assessment for inspection and testing purposes and should be considered. This is also free of charge and available from the HSE website at www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/ priced/hsg107.pdf For other types of work environment, it is however recommended that the duty holder should carry out a risk assessment to take account of the specific workplace and type and class of equipment in use.

This could also include taking account of any procedures in place to manage risk, e.g. have procedures been put in place to provide staff training where necessary?

And have measures to require user checks and visual inspections been implemented? It may be that this is all that is necessary in some instances!

testing required to ensure that equipment remains in a safe and operational condition: ● The environment in which the equipment is to be used, e.g. consider whether equipment is likely to be subject to harsh treatment, an office being relatively low risk while a construction site would be regarded as significantly higher. ● Consider who the equipment user will be – is it likely to be an ordinary person, like a site visitor, or will it be an employee with specific training?

Has a system been established where user checks are carried out on equipment before use? Is there a mechanism established for reporting any defective equipment found? Note: User checks and visual inspections are one of the most important checks that can be carried out on equipment and can be used to easily identify many of the defects that often occur in the plug, cable and casing of equipment. ● The equipment construction should be considered, e.g. Class I equipment would be regarded as a higher risk than Class II equipment as it relies on connection to the protective earthing arrangement of the fixed installation for safety. Class II equipment is not dependant on the safety of the electrical installation and in low risk environments testing may not be necessary at all. ● The equipment type should be considered – handheld equipment would be considered more likely to suffer damage than other equipment and subsequently there would be a higher risk from it, with less risk

Risk assessment procedure

When carrying out a risk assessment, the duty holder should think about the list of considerations provided below, which should enable an informed decision to be made of the ongoing inspection and 34

associated with fixed equipment. ● The frequency of use of the equipment would have implications for the equipment’s service life and possible likelihood of damage. ● The type of installation that the equipment will be connected to should be considered as the position of isolation and type of cable management used and circuit protection provided may be important with regard to the equipment safety, e.g. is there RCD protection on the socket-outlets to be used? ● Importantly, is a system of maintenance established and being operated and do inspection and test records exist for the equipment? ● Functional in-service life may have an effect on how often the equipment is checked if it has been designed to have an intentionally short life because of built in components.

Model example risk assessments

The risks associated with the class and type of equipment being used in the defined environments will obviously vary between workplaces. Example risk assessments have been provided in the revised COP to help duty holders quantify the risk to which equipment is exposed in their own workplaces.

These new assessments are shown for information in the tables on these pages.

However, they should not be adopted as definitive and the duty holder or competent person providing advice should make the effort to make the risk assessment specific to the workplace being assessed in each instance.

The CICV Forum recently finished hosting six commercial webinars, covering everything from contracts and industry culture to conflict avoidance. We look at the main points from these valuable online sessions – and what practical advice contractors can take forward into 2021

s someone who deals with payment issues every day, I think contractor problems can often be selfinduced. It was therefore decided to host a series of free webinars to help improve the contractual and commercial management of building projects and try to ensure that contractors were paid what they were due, when they are due.

To do this, I was joined by a team of extremely experienced presenters including Professor Rudi Klein, CEO of the SEC Group, Ian Honeyman, Commercial Director of the Scottish Building Federation, Angus Pearson, Contracts and Disputes Specialist with Fortis and Deborah Harrison, Legal Counsel with the British Constructional Steelwork Association.

So what were the main points we wanted to get across? I decided the easiest way to sum things up was this bullet point guide: ● Read the sub-contracts you receive and look out for issues that might cause a problem and attract risk. If the risk is too high, then be prepared to walk away. ● Make sure you understand what documentation constitutes the CONTRACT DOCUMENTATION and read through carefully to ensure that all documents are aligned and that there isn’t conflict between or within documents. ● Watch out for amendments to the payment provisions. ● Be aware of clauses which extend your obligations and know how to deal with them, such as third-party agreements, collateral warranties,

indemnity wording and crosscontract set-off. ● If you cannot negotiate any other amendment, at the very least seek to reasonably limit your liability – a ‘cap’. ● Look at the contract duration stated within the tender documents and consider whether the time period stated is adequate to carry out the scope of works to be undertaken. ● If the time period is not sufficient, having given due consideration to all factors which could impact on programme, propose an alternative or qualify your tender. ● Check that you have the right to claim for an extension to the date for completion. Understand the process which allows you to do so.

● Make sure your tender is qualified in respect of potential fluctuations in materials – remember Brexit is looming – and put in something that means you do not take any risk in connection with sites closing and/or being disrupted by site closures. ● Use or adapt the payment schedule that is on the CICV Forum website and you will not run into any issues during the project on not meeting payment dates. ● Make sure you keep records.

This could include email communications, site diaries, resource schedules, videos and photographs. You might need these months down the line. ● Payment applications – provide as

much detail as you can and don’t give anyone any excuses to put a red pen through your applications. If you are asked for information, provide it. ● If you’re not paid in full by the final date for payment then you have a statutory and contractual right under SBCC conditions to suspend the performance of any or all of your obligations under the contract/ sub-contract – a powerful remedy, so use it. You may be able to terminate your contract/subcontract providing you follow the specific procedures. ● Make sure you follow the procedures in the contract/subcontract for issuing notices. Send them to the correct person, at the

correct address, within the specified time, in the manner described. Try to accommodate notice by email in your contract if you can. ● Get your final account in on time.

Be sure it is clearly labelled as a final payment application in the terms of the contract. Chase up and collect your retentions. Keep a running ledger of when retentions are due to be paid. Apply for retention if necessary. ● Have in mind the risk of insolvency of ANY party higher up the payment tree and not just the party that is employing you. ● You have no need to be concerned about project bank accounts (PBAs), which ensure you get paid on time. If you need advice, talk to SELECT. You can also find lots of information in the Useful Links section at www. cicvforum.co.uk ● Conflict avoidance – inevitably you might need to take some action if you are not getting paid. Have a look at the CIC Low Value Adjudication Scheme and the Summary Procedure, which are low-cost adjudication schemes where the adjudicators’ fees are fixed, making adjudication much more attractive to the construction supply chain. Consider writing these schemes into your contracts and sub-contracts. Again, information on these schemes is in the Useful Links section at www.cicvforum.co.uk ● Conflict Avoidance Processes (CAP) – this is a game changer for the industry. It provides early intervention into any contentious issues on a construction project to resolve issues and stop them escalating. The process builds relationships as well. ● And finally…. Collaborate.

Clause for One of the ongoing side-effects of the COVID-19 pandemic has been the disruption to progress of works – and unfortunately, it’s no surprise that the risks are being passed along the supply chain

he recent resurgence of COVID-19 and the ever-growing number of areas subject to lockdown have once again raised the spectre of disruption to construction works.

Such disruption may take many varied forms. Sites may be wholly or partially closed because of workers testing positive or due to government-ordered

lockdowns, or there may be a delay to site deliveries, all leading to an interruption in progress of work.

It may come as no surprise to many in the industry that COVID-related risks are being shunted along the supply chain. This is in spite of exhortations from the UK and devolved governments that we should all be working together and sharing risk in these unprecedented times. Clearly this message hasn’t got through to some clients and contractors.

When it comes to COVID-related clauses, here is a rather unpleasant one: “The Sub-Contractor shall have no right or remedy pursuant to any provision of this Sub-Contract, whether by adjustment to the Sub-Contract Sum or by adjustment to the Completion Date(s) or otherwise or in damages at common law or in tort [delict in Scotland] or pursuant to any other theory of law to the extent that any matter listed in Schedule 1 (Notifiable Diseases) and/or Schedule 2 (Causative Agents) of the Health Protection (Notification) Regulations 2010 has any affect, whether direct or indirect, on the Works or on the progress of the Works.”

If you have survived a careful reading of the above, here is another example: You are informed at bid stage that if you are unwilling to take on “the risk of COVID” – whatever this may involve – your tender/offer will not be considered. Your sub-contract then tells you that: “For the full period of the sub-contract works – sub-contractor takes on the risk of maintaining productivity assuming 2m social distancing in place.”

This clause continues as follows: “In relation to pandemics (current and future) in the event of any future lockdowns, implemented by government instruction, which lead to the site shutting down: ● Week one to eight sub-contractor is responsible for all costs but an extension of time will be granted for each day the site is closed ● Week nine onwards, reasonable costs are recoverable under the sub-contract where the subcontractor has used best endeavours to mitigate delays and an extension of time will be granted for each day the site is closed.”

In England the Health Protection (Notification) Regulations 2010 have been updated to include SARS – Coronavirus 2.

Similar regulations exist in the devolved jurisdictions such as Part 2 of the Public Health etc. (Scotland) Act 2008.

So, what is the first clause actually saying? ● In general, you are to assume all the COVID-related risks impacting upon your sub-contract works, even though you are unlikely to be in a position to avoid/manage them or insure against them ● This is irrespective of whether the impact on the main contract works is “direct or indirect”. “Indirect” could, for example, refer to the precautionary shutting down of a site because workers have been taken ill with COVID-19 on another – unrelated – site some five miles down the road ● Through no fault of your own, you could be liable to pick up some or all of the main contractor’s liquidated damages if it has not been given an extension of time by the client, or if it has not been given the extension applied for.

Analysis of second clause

Your price is expected to include “the risk of COVID”. The immediate question is: what does this mean?

“You could be liable to pick up some or all of the main contractor’s liquidated damages if it has not been given an extension of time” Since it is so open-ended, pricing for COVID risk would require the services of a clairvoyant. You then take on the risk of maintaining productivity even though social distancing is in force. So without fault on your part, if you can’t social distance – and have to cease work until you can – you will be in breach of contract when your productivity suffers.

For such a clause to work there would have to be some benchmark to measure the requisite productivity.

The costs over an eight-week period of lockdown could be phenomenal, with cancelled deliveries, storage costs, salaries and overheads etc. In this context you would want the right to terminate your contract.

From week nine onwards, reasonable costs can be recovered provided you have used “best endeavours” to reduce delays.

This requires you to do everything you reasonably can which could include, ironically, incurring extra costs in order

to reduce delays – plenty of scope for argument here. It would have been better if the clause had specified the steps required to be taken.

Advice for SELECT Member firms

Apart from the myriad disputes these clauses are likely to engender, they import risks which, for the most part, you will not be able to manage.

For the sake of efficiency and fairness, risks should always be allocated to those best able to manage them. Therefore, seek to either negotiate them out of your contract or, at least, seek to define with more precision the risks you are being asked to take on.

If you are likely to be saddled with ongoing costs in the event of disruption to your works, make sure that you have a right of termination in these circumstances.

Perhaps you could make clear at the outset that your price does not take into consideration COVID-related risks.

By Stewart MacRobert Hi Adam, what made you think of becoming an electrician?

It was down to my dad who served his time with the council many years ago. He eventually gave up being an electrician, but still did small jobs around the house. I used to watch what he was doing and that got me interested in the job.

Was it difficult to get an apprenticeship?

There were a few places offering apprenticeships and I applied for different options but I felt comfortable with the council so chose them. I started in August 2019.

How have you found it?

Like most things, there are easy parts and harder parts. At the end of the day I’m there to learn. If I ask the right questions and retain the right knowledge over time then the job should become natural to me.

Was the college training what you expected?

It’s been really good and everyone there is very helpful. You get to learn a lot, including things you wouldn’t do with the council. The COVID situation has made things harder – I was off from the end of March until the middle of August. However, you just have to get your head down and get on with it. We’re getting back into the swing of things now.

How about on site?

On the first day I was a bit nervous.

It was a different atmosphere – I didn’t know anyone, didn’t know about the job and didn’t know where I’d be going. But you soon get to know people and learn what’s what.

Has there been anything about the job that’s surprised you?

Going from school to being on site is a big change. However, I enjoy learning something new every day and the crucial things are the skills you apply to your work. When you see a job finished, it’s a great feeling to know that it’s something you made happen.

What does the future hold?

As we’ve seen this year, things can change quite dramatically, so it’s hard to say what will happen further down the line. But I’m staying with the council for the foreseeable future. It’s a great place to work and everyone is very welcoming.

uring these extremely challenging times, SECTT has tried to make things as normal as possible for all apprentices and adult trainees, and that includes the SECTT Apprentice of the Year competition.

In a non-COVID-19 year we would usually hold three regional heats – North, East and West – with the winner from both 1st and 2nd Stage in each heat being invited to the final, which is comprised of an interview with a panel of judges.

This year we received the nominations as usual, yet we were obviously unable to host the heats. However, we didn’t want anyone to miss out, so we decided to award each nominee a certificate and a set of test lamps when we were able to return to college or site.

On these pages you’ll see some of the 39 young people who received recognition, including Jamie Black Wilkins, a 1st Stage Edinburgh College apprentice who came through the Get Into Electrical Installation programme that we partner with the Prince’s Trust.

Among the many tributes I heard was from Frankie Greg, SECTT Training Officer, who presented Stage 2 apprentice Stephen Gibson with his award.

Frankie told me: “I have noticed the work Stephen puts in since I first took over at West College Scotland Paisley.

“Through the comments from his lecturers and what he produced in the workshop, he was pipped at the post last year for first year Apprentice of the Year but this year proved himself further. He is a relatively quiet guy who clearly does the work at home and also a credit to his employer Peter Houston who has a number of very good apprentices.”

From a personal point of view, I’d like to offer huge congratulations to all those who were nominated. Although it’s hard work, I know that everyone was disappointed not to be able to take part in the practical competition.

This year has robbed us of many of the good things we usually do. This competition is a joy and celebration for all those who take part and, although they are a challenge to organise, the benefits are extensive.

This is an opportunity for those taking part to show off their quality work in front of family, friends, employers and college lecturers, and is also a good opportunity for the host colleges to show off their excellent facilities.

Sadly, this was not to be this year, but I sincerely hope that we can resume the competition in 2021.

As the second wave of COVID-19 in the UK starts to bite, it is clear we may be enduring the consequences of coronavirus for a while.

Talk of a vaccine and rapid testing gives us hope that things will soon start to return to normal but until then, as various levels of lockdown are imposed, there remains a risk that parties to construction contracts will be faced with further delay and/ or disruption to their projects.

As such, when preparing contracts, parties need to give careful consideration to how COVID-19 may impact their works. The first wave saw sites shut down, shortages of labour, plant and materials, delays in delivery, changed working hours and then necessary health and safety changes on site.

Now that we all have some experience of dealing with the pandemic, parties should be in a position to identify the risks that the pandemic poses, negotiate who bears those risks and draft contract terms to tackle (or at least attempt to tackle!) coronavirus-related issues.

Over the past few months, we have seen the full range of drafting options, from the employer taking on full COVID-19 risk, shared risk approaches, and even contractors being required CABLEtalk

to manage the virus with no COVID-19-specific entitlement to time or money.

There are a few issues which should be given particular thought: ● Entitlement to additional time and money – think about where the risk lies for likely coronavirus-related delays. For example: – Is there likely to be an issue with procuring materials?

Who is responsible for supplying materials?

– What happens if there is a labour shortage as a result of positive COVID tests on site?

– Change in law provisions – what happens if further coronavirus legislation causes delay? ● Sub-Contractors – care should be taken to ensure that a consistent approach is taken throughout the supply chain. Having consistent rights and responsibilities will avoid confusion and potential disputes.

GETTING TO KNOW YOU Craig McGowan

Chair, Lanarkshire Branch Hello Craig. How long have you been involved with SELECT? I have been a SELECT Member since 2002, first with my own company and then with Macform Ltd since 2011.

Tell us a bit about your business, where you’re based and how long you’ve been an electrician.

I started my apprenticeship in 1991 and qualified in 1995 so I’ve been an electrician for 25 years. I’m the electrical manager at Macform, a construction company based in Wishaw which specialises in domestic and commercial contracts. We are currently refurbishing Cairnlee Church in Airdrie and we’re also building a large bespoke house in Strathblane, carrying out all the work in-house including fire alarms, CCTV, intruder alarm and smart lighting.

What does your job entail? Tell us more about what you do.

I think the regular technical updates are important and having the back-up of a trade association such as SELECT is most important to our company. You know that you can lift the phone and get help with whatever problem you can face as an electrical contractor.

What do you find most enjoyable about your job?

I especially like the tech side of the industry. I also enjoy the difficult jobs and seeing the end results – and the happy customers!

My job involves estimating, sourcing material, some aspects of design, meeting clients and preparing certificates reports. I’m also hands-on carrying out installation work along with our electricians.

What’s a typical day like at work?

Every day is different depending on whether I’m on site, in the office, or attending site meetings, although these are usually over Zoom at the moment.

Do you get the chance to meet other SELECT Members?

Before COVID, yes. I always tried hard to make the Branch Updates and was lucky enough to be invited to events like the SELECT Awards and the SJIB 50th anniversary dinner at Edinburgh Castle.

What impact has lockdown and working remotely had on your business?

Like most construction companies in Scotland, unfortunately we were closed during lockdown. Since we received the green light to open again, we have been really busy finishing contracts and starting new work so I’m happy to say everything’s been good for us.

It’s been strange getting used to doing so much remotely and over Zoom, but I think it’s something we are all getting used to by now.
