WELCOME TO MIMAGAZINE Your local magazine for Redbourn, Kinsbourne Green, Markyate, Flamstead, Caddington, Slip End, Aley Green, Woodside, Kensworth, Whipsnade, Studham, Dagnall, Ringshall and the Gaddesdens.

Dear Readers, I love pu ng this issue together because we are talking about the winter fes vi es and the build up to Christmas.

There is so much going on in November and December around the area so put your mobiles down, turn off the lap­tops and TVs and get out there. See pages 62­65 which lists everything that’s going on. You will be spoilt for choice.

Although our thoughts are turning to Christmas, in here we report on some autumn events which were very popular in the area including the Classic Cars on the Common in Redbourn and the 20/20 Cricket Match in Markyate.

Our Adver sements manager, Janet and I went to a talk at the Luton Hoo Walled Gardens for our ritual, bi­monthly ou ng, post distribu on of the magazine. We were amazed to learn about the history of the gardens in the stately homes in Bedfordshire and there are surprisingly many of them. The me period was the 18th ­ 20th century and although it was very much the era of ‘us’ and ‘them’, you realise that if the landowners had not been so lavishly rich and the ordinary people so poor, working for a pi ance, they wouldn’t have been able to afford to build these grand mansions and gardens that have become our heritage which we can all enjoy today. We learned what a Ha Ha is. Do you know what it is and what it’s purpose is?

Markyate Cricket Club to join the Saracens’ League next season Markyate Spice to sponsor the shirts Gyash Uddin, boss of Markyate Spice was delighted to present the vice­captain and treasurer with sponsored training and playing shirts for next season when MCC enters the Saracen’s league.

“I was looking to sponsor one of the sport’s clubs and it was MCC who asked first.

She regularly contacts MiMag with updates of what’s going on and a recent ini a ve has been to create a club to bring the very young and the very old together.

“We have been taking no ce of the recent documentary on BBC 4 that shows the benefits of having seniors and children, four years and under to communicate, play and have fun with seniors.

Lucky Winners of the Pavillion Restaurant Compe on Our three photo compe on had many of you flummoxed so we had to make it easier by just giving you two to guess correctly. Only two of you guessed all three photos correctly, but 45 were correct on the two.

Sunshine and the local community supported the 10th Flower & Vegetable Show in Kensworth Village Hall on 2nd September Words by David Manton and Janet Brown and photos by Janet Brown

ith the usual array of colour, the show lived up to expecta ons with some quality exhibits.

In addi on to the usual garden produce, a packed audience enjoyed the displays of cakes, preserves, flower arrangements, home­made gree ng cards and kni ng. A big a rac on was the decorated flower pots, bird houses and artwork prepared by the children from Kensworth School.

Major prizewinners were Chris and Maureen Venstone (Front Garden), Peter and Marjorie Lynn and John and Maria Silva (Allotments), Lynn Lewis (Cookery), Shirley Hull (Flower Arrangement), Anne McDonald (Cra work), David Manton (Fruit), and Casey Thomas (Children’s Category).

Alan McClelland’s carrots were voted the best vegetable and Geoff Stafford’s dahlias, the best flowers.

Geoff also won the trophy for gaining most points in the show.

The prizes were presented by Robert Ash of Ashton’s Estate Agents, who have been major sponsors for the past five years. Other sponsors were The Horse & Jockey, Old Palace Lodge Hotel, TC Feeds & The Tack Haven, Chicks Crop Shop and Wyevale Garden Centre.

Redbourn Classics Motor Show, run by a group of volunteers, hit the common on 16th September. All proceeds from this event went to Friends of St Mary’s Church and Redbourn Care Group.

Classic cars, bikes and commercial vehicles (over 22­years­old) were on show and the event was a great family fun day with lots of village stalls and ac vi es, along with music from local ar sts.

Gordon Dickens of The Hollybush family run pub, was offering local ales and Pimms and Redbourn Autos, Ac ve Leisure, Redbourn Care Group, Redbourn Players and Redbourn Christmas Market were among the many stalls to visit and catch up with village news.

The Redbourn Players were out in force promo ng the pantomime ‘Frankenstein’ which will take place on 7th, 8th and 9th December. They are advising people to purchase ckets now as they are selling fast. With the director of the show, Pauline Mead, playing Frankenstein’s estranged wife, it is sure to be a fun family ou ng!

A fantas c £8,000 was raised and these monies will go to the Redbourn Care Group and Friends of St Mary’s Church.

Here’s hoping there will be another Classic show next year!

Shop and be entertained in Luton town centre this Christmas Shoppers and families in Luton town centre are in for a special treat this Christmas with a host of free fes ve fun events throughout November and December.

Luton Business Improvement District (BID) is planning some exi ng events and entertainment which will add extra Christmas sparkle to the town centre.

Among the events planned; Mike & Evie from Mike the Knight will be making personal appearances at intervals in the lead­up to the Luton’s Christmas lights switch­on on Saturday 25th November – an event organised by Luton Borough Council Santa will wander through the town centre with Mrs Claus, his Christmas elves and a host of walkabout entertainers as they meet and greet families on Saturday 2nd December.

Other fes ve highlights on St George’s Square include a light display on the side of Luton Central Library which will bring the area to life on Friday 8th and Saturday 9th December, MIKEY and DONNIE from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles who will be making personal appearances at intervals on Saturday 16th December and fes ve carol singing by the 30­foot Christmas tree on Saturday 23rd December.

Gavin O’Brien, Chair of the Luton Business Improvement District (BID) and co­director of town centre based business Clearhead said, “We are delighted to be able to bring some really exci ng events to Luton town centre

during November and every weekend in December in the run­up to Christmas. In addi on to some of the bigger events, we have also arranged walkabout performers, a magician, fire­ea ng s lt walkers, carol singing as well as other acts to entertain families and shoppers. They will bring an added fes ve feel and Christmas cheer during the busy period and they are all free.

Molly the biker Jack Russell I met Molly and her owner Ron by chance when delivering the last issue of MiMagazine. Ron had pulled out on his motor bike from the garage and my a en on was drawn to a dog si ng proudly in a special chair at the back of the bike. It was a Jack Russell, dressed Ron and Molly in a biker’s leather jacket. I was intrigued to find out more about this biking dog and Ron told me that they had been all over Europe and the UK together. Molly sits in her special chair and is happy to travel miles a day on tour with Ron. “She did have a helmet but she wouldn’t keep it on so I had to give up on her wearing a safety hat!” said Ron. He went on to tell me that she has her own Facebook page called Molly’s Exploits. A er being accepted onto the group, I could follow the full adventures of Molly and Ron. Fascina ng. What an amazing partnership it is for Ron from Markyate and his precious Jack Russell.

Is your car ready for Winter?

The AA report that the majority of accidents occur during the winter months accompanied by a steep rise in reported breakdowns. But why do our cars suddenly become unreliable? What makes Winter different from other seasons?

The cold weather condi ons affect many parts of a car – the oil becomes thicker (like honey le in a fridge), fuel doesn’t burn as effec vely, pipes burst, engines seize, ba eries don’t charge as efficiently and there is more drain on the system; as well as the doors freezing shut and wipers ge ng stuck to the windscreen!

As with all things mechanical/electrical, if you look a er them they perform be er. A er all, you wouldn’t put your electric heater in the freezer and expect it to work would you?! So, with this in mind, here are a few helpful ps to keep you safe this winter.

The good news is that you can take steps to reduce the chance of your ba ery le ng you down.

• During a rou ne service, your garage will check that the clamps and connec ons to the ba ery are secure and corrosion free.

• The life of a ba ery is usually around 5 years, so if it is older and there are signs that the car is struggling to start, best to get it replaced.

• When you park, remove any extra drain on the ba ery by turning off anything electrical ­ wipers, heater, lights, radio, etc. This means that when you return to the car, the charge goes directly to the starter motor providing op mum ability to ‘turn over’ and recharge.

• On a manual car, dip the clutch to prevent the car from trying to start the gearbox also.

The major cause of winter breakdowns... the car ba ery.

An freeze/Coolant

When the car is turned on, there is a chemical reac on that produces electrons supplying the ba ery’s current.

At normal temperatures they’ll produce enough current to keep the ba ery’s power full and working well. The more you drive, the more the ba ery charges. In colder weather it becomes harder for the ba ery to produce enough current to stay at maximum poten al, therefore the reserves drop. There has to be enough charge in the ba ery to ‘turn over’ the engine so that it

26 Winter Tyres Winter tyres increase your stopping distance by 11m in temperatures below ­7°C. It is worth considering them if you do a lot of driving! They are made from a special compound and tread design, providing excellent grip and control in low temperatures.

Other issues you may encounter could be: Frozen screen washers – remember to use a screen wash addi ve all year round. Undiluted in winter works best, but read the bo le first.

Frozen wipers ­ Trying to operate windscreen wipers which are solidly stuck to the glass can lead to blown fuses which in turn affect other more vital systems.

Make sure automa c windscreen wipers are turned off.

Make sure the wipers aren't stuck to the glass, before se ng off too!

Frozen door locks and door seals ­ A squirt of WD40 in the locks will help as will a light smear of Vaseline or silicone polish on the door seals (applied by cloth to avoid ge ng it on the paintwork!). If snow falls, clear it regularly to prevent the car turning into a block of ice.

Frozen igni on locks ­ Anything electrical can become affected by damp weather. The key here is to keep the interior as dry as possible – don’t leave snow covered wellies or clothes in the car overnight.

The MET office sta s cs show that the average temperature last year remained below 7°C for 6 months, making cold weather tyres suitable for use from October to March.

If these are your preferred tyres this winter, it is worth ge ng them ordered soon as demand is usually high.

If winter tyres aren’t your thing, the AA recommend at least 3mm tread depth to help maintain your contact with the road. Even at 3mm, your tyre is 78% worn.

Make sure you and your family remain safe this winter and don’t leave anything to chance. If you’d rather not have the hassle of checking over the car yourself, talk to a professional.

Frozen rear drum brakes and handbrake cables ­ Keeping your car clean through the winter to remove corrosive road salt is good, but try not to use the hose or pressure washer to prevent the water ge ng into the brake cables or drums.

Garage ­ Some people go to the extreme and remove their ba ery to take it inside, but our advice would be to use your garage, if you are able to, which will keep the vehicle dry and as warm as possible.

Fuel ­ Be prepared for un mely delays and keep at least ¼ tank of fuel in the car.

20/20 Match in glorious Bank Holiday Monday sunshine ends the season for Markyate Cricket Club and prepares them for the Saracens League next year

t was a three team 20/20 compe on with a 10.30 start so the barbeque was revved up and ready to go with a breakfast special cooked by Mr and Mrs locke.

The teams were MCC a&b and Luton Town CC. Each team played against each other once and the final came down to MCC a) v LTCC in a 20 over match. A half hour rest period preceded the final so that players could have some liquid refreshment as well as a delicious Indian buffet supplied by their new kit sponsors, Markyate Spice. The MCC vice captain, Dave Maskell, opened up with Gary Sanford and a 50­run partnership was made before both began blowing in the heat and were run out. Maskell scored 34 and Sanford 55. Dan Mor mer made 13 not out, captain Carl Smith 5 and then Charlie Merson wasted no me in se ng about the a ack, scoring 50 with a 6 with only 2 balls to go. This set a good target of 174 for 4 of their 20 overs. MCC knew it would be tough against a free scoring Luton ba ng order and indeed LTCC got off to a brisk start and MCC could not restrict them. No ma er how many bowling changes they made, Luton always seemed to be in control. Smith came on and died things up, taking a quick wicket and ge ng the run rate up to a challenging level. It was in vain however, as Luton won with an over to spare.

“It was a thoroughly enjoyable day and a good test for us as we are joining the Saracens League on Saturdays next season. We will start in division 10c and will be assessed a er the first season. Sunday cricket was not working as people wanted to play league cricket and so we were losing players to those teams that were playing league cricket. MCC had long been a league cricket team and this is where we need to be, playing league cricket on a Saturday. We will s ll play some games on a Sunday but Luton Town CC will primarily use the Rec on Sundays for the Beds league.

We are working at ge ng a youth sec on started with adequate training and coaching facili es from next year onwards so we are on the hunt for sponsors from the local community. We need kit sponsorship, nets, and coaching courses. Our local fine dining Indian restaurant have sponsored us to the sum of £1,500 for new match day shirts and training kit for which we are very grateful,” said captain Carl Smith.

The Lady with the Painted Fingernails:

Barbara, 1936­2017

Barbara Moseley of Markyate I had interviewed and photographed Barbara on the 1st and 5th of July 2016. She then corrected and edited the text I had wri en and also selected the photo shot she deemed fit for publica on.

What follows here is therefore her authorised life story or the way she wishes to be remembered. In May this year, a er a number of heavy falls, Barbara was moved to a care home in Hemel Hempstead where she died from cancer on the 27th of August.

Interview with Barbara by Werner Ustorf, Markyate.

Born in London in 1936, Barbara had what Social Services a er the War called a “horrible history”. She grew up as an only child and spent the first years with her grandparents. In 1939 her dad bought a house in Ewell, Surrey, but a year later he was killed in an air raid when the RAF facili es in Montrose, Scotland were bombed. The moment when her mother received the black­edged telegram is deeply engraved in Barbara’s memory. The marriage would not have lasted anyway, Barbara says, as the father was a womaniser. This created a special bond between mother and daughter which Barbara describes as sisterhood. Deprived of the breadwinner, the two had to move out to Cheam in Surrey where Barbara could watch the Doodle Bugs from the back garden. In 1941 the authori es evacuated her to Yorkshire where she stayed un l 1944 with foster parents who she stayed in contact with: for the first me, she experienced there an unbroken family life. Leaving Cheam her mother took her back to live with the grandparents in South London, an area which was s ll occasionally bombed by the Lu waffe.

Since the RAF was paying for Barbara’s educa on up to the age of eleven, her mother took her to Brighton to be educated there in a Roman Catholic convent, though Barbara was actually CoE. The me she spent with the pious sisters, some of whom were French, meant mass before breakfast and speaking French at meal mes.

Barbara describes this experience as being trauma c; marked by inten onal cruelty and frequent diseases.

When the funding ended in 1948, Barbara lived again with her grandparents in London and joined a girls’ grammar school that kindly waived the fees. Barbara

followed the applied knowledge route of the school, typewri ng and shorthand, graduated as early as possible and in 1953 became a secretary at the London office of the Dolcis shoe company. She was s ll a naïve young girl at this stage. One day, her colleagues got her drunk: a lesson Barbara would never ever forget and, she says, neither should the young people of today.

However, the post­war state of penury did begin to ease and when the first bananas re­appeared on the market it was like a dream. She loved dancing, in par cular when the “Twist” became fashionable.

At about the same me she met John (“useless” in rela on to Twist), an appren ce with the Siemens Company and “a real gentleman” who had done his na onal service in Egypt. In 1956, at just twenty years of age, they moved to Chislehurst, Kent, and this, I feel, is the central event in Barbara’s narra ve. John, who died in 2004 from cancer, was the man of her life. He loved cricket and was the captain of Sidcup Cricket Club in Kent. “He never swore and was always kind,” said Babara. 1956 was also the year of the so­called Suez Crisis and John was conscripted again, but thanks to the interven on of the US in the ill­fated affair, he got no farther than Malta. Married life was probably Barbara’s happiest experience. Three sons were born between 1965 and 1968 and she now felt, as she says, “complete”. She tried to offer them a childhood she herself could not have. But “life was hard”, in par cular when the business John had set up, together with others, went bust in the early 1970s. Barbara proudly refused to pawn her engagement ring and instead resumed secretarial work while her mum looked a er the children.

Later that decade the family moved to Harpenden, at a me when a larger newly built property was less than £4,000! Barbara’s mother, who died in 2003, con nued living with them for a while and so did her mother­in­ law. The boys went to school in St Albans and established their own lives and families a long me ago; one of them is in Australia. The twenty or so years in Harpenden, while working in the Civil Service as a part­ me typist and secretary at Rothamsted Experimental Sta on, represent the longest period of happy con nuity in Barbara’s life. This period ended when Barbara had to resign on health grounds and the couple came to the conclusion that selling the house and downsizing was now the right thing to do. In the mean me, their middle son had bought a flat in Markyate which Barbara and John rented and then, in the mid­1990s, eventually bought as their final residence.

Barbara had been living on her own for twelve years in Markyate, when I interviewed her. At that me, her life style was most ac ve though her memory was not what it used to be when she was young. She worked hard to keep her memory by prac sing various ac ve techniques to retrieve words, names, years or places.

But it is rather what she calls her “excess spending” and the fact that she suffered from falls (one leading to a broken vertebra) that persuaded the two sons living in the UK to assume power of a orney. Barbara was wearing many bracelets, one of them spor ng the 1939 phrase “Keep Calm and Carry on,” a slogan which accurately expressed her personal a tudes; she had a lot of figh ng spirit. Although she had real difficul es walking Barbara was out and about every day, using a walking s ck.

Being out and about prevented her from being alone.

Barbara picked up the possibility of social contacts wherever an opportunity presented itself and she regularly went to the social mee ngs in the Bap st Church – (the Anglican place was too far away for her to walk to). An important mee ng point is the local corner store with the bench opposite: it is here that she liked to have a chat with anybody who was willing, dog owners in par cular. She enjoyed being picked up by the local Care Group with other OAPs every Wednesday for a two­ course meal in the Swan. Barbara was also a member of the local History Society and the Open End, a group exploring art and culture. She was a keen traveller, using local coach companies and some of their package tours.

Last me, she went to Dover, and for Christmas 2016, she booked a holiday tour in a hotel near Tunbridge Wells. She did not wish to burden her sons with her presence; she believed that her sons had got their own lives. At this point, I would think, we are encountering Barbara’s personality most clearly.

Of course, she spent Christmas with her sons on many occasions. In April 2016, when she celebrated her 80th birthday, all of them came to Markyate. Her sons indeed cared for her but she wanted to be independent and her other expecta ons in rela on to life were rather modest.

She did not need to be in the centre of things. Of her life in Markyate she said that from the beginning she felt included and that she was able to establish numerous acquaintances. But she had not made any close friends – and she did not expect to. As long as people were not rude to her she was happy: “I don’t mind being ignored,” she stated.

Barbara was worried about losing her mental abili es. Her mother had demen a and died at 93, a er having spent many years in a home. This is not what Barbara would accept. She had discussed ma ers with one of her sons and the op on for an agreed end of life scenario at Dignitas in Zurich was clearly on the table. The reasons for this would not simply be selfish. Living in a home would be expensive and may even have led to the sale of the flat in Markyate. Barbara was determined to pass the property on to her sons to give them and her grandchildren more life chances. She had already planned and paid for her funeral and she le instruc ons for her ashes to be sca ered at the place where John’s and her mother’s ashes are. Barbara wanted to be in control un l the very end.

Barbara has now departed this world but, even in her senior years, she never forgot that once she was an a rac ve and pre y girl. At regular intervals, she had her fingernails painted: blue or turquoise in summer, red in winter. To explain her ac ons she would say, “I know I’m eighty, but I s ll have pride in my appearance.”

Majes c Trees of Flamstead Celebrated 15 years in Business

o celebrate 15 years in business, Majes c Trees hosted an invita on­only, industry symposium on 12th September. Their new Visitor Advice Centre was also opened.

Around 200 people a ended including delegates from the press, garden designers, landscapers, and nurserymen and some highly regarded professionals in the industry.

Xylella across mainland Europe. Unlike Dutch Elm Disease or Ash Dieback which kills only one species of tree, Xylella is known to a ack over 300 species, many of which are common in Britain. UK growers are driving an industry ini a ve to get a robust biosecurity strategy in place swi ly to protect our borders. Nicola Spence’s briefing on the current situa on led to a forum discussion where nurserymen, landscapers, designers, and scien sts all contributed.

Peter Seabrook, one of hor culture’s most venerable and philanthropic figures opened the day.

Many will know him as the presenter of Gardeners’ World through the 70s, or as the garden columnist for The Sun, a role he has held for over 40 years.

Now in his 80s, he is s ll an ac ve contributor to the industry, and in his address, he called upon the delegates to inspire young people to pursue careers in hor culture. He praised Majes c Trees for how far they had come in just 15 years, commending the team for their passionate commitment, the key to the company’s success.

Concerns were raised over internet importers who are evading customs checks. Professor Spence said that this poten al breach was being looked at but the EU has indicated it will take two years to address! The EU currently allows the free movement of all plant material which has resulted in the rapid spread of the disease in southern Europe.

Professor Spence challenged designers and landscapers in the audience to ensure that they only sourced plants from nurseries that were commi ed to supplying stock that was free of Xylella. There was a consensus that they would spread the word and do their utmost to be proac ve. She added that the government was considering taking emergency measures if it felt that not enough was being done.

The keynote speaker was Professor Nicola Spence, Chief Plant Health Officer for Dept of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA). She addressed the industry’s rising concerns about the rapid spread of

Mark Gregory further contributed on the topic; the landscape contractor and designer, has won more than 20 gold medals at Chelsea for his Main Avenue gardens! Delegates were finally treated to a demonstra on of how the trees are manoeuvred, using Majes c’s state­of­the­art li ing equipment.

The new Visitor Advice Centre with its spill­over outdoor garden area, provided a welcoming hub throughout the day. “It was a humbling experience to have so many highly regarded industry associates gathered at our nursery for the day,” said Chris na Jones, Marke ng Manager. “I think we all feel incredibly inspired by the experience.”

25 YEARS OF TRING BREWERY

O

n a damp and foggy evening in the depths of November 1992, commercial brewing commenced in the small town of Tring for the first me in over 50 years.

Andrew was not alien to the world of brewing, having cut his teeth as a research scien st for Whitbread which culminated in a PhD from Heriot Wa University, Edinburgh. Andrew had a vision for the brewery, which he was quick to exercise.

A quarter of a decade later and we are proud to be introduced as Her ordshire’s biggest brewery, producing around two million pints of beer per year. Our journey can be seen through the eyes of the drinker (now spoilt for choice in the modern market) our loyal team of staff which is spearheaded by a doctor in yeast floccula on and the latest in a lineage of family brewers.

Richard Shardlow learnt his trade from his father Peter and between them they oversaw and undertook the installa on of many breweries in the 1980s. The microbreweries that swept the plains of the US and UK in the 1990s embraced a counter­culture, juxtaposed to the large macro­ breweries of the day who had swallowed, and in turn, ceased brewing many of the drinkers’ favourite brands. Microbreweries were capturing the heart of the Bri sh public and Richard saw an opportunity in Tring; a town which, at one­ me, was home to three breweries.

Richard, who also ran a brewery installa on company, Brewing Design Services, set to work to build a brewery of his own in 1992 with brewing commencing in November of that year. Aided by Kerr Hill and Barry Phipp, Ridgeway Bi er was brewed and delivered to local pubs with the high standards that had enamoured the pub­goers of yesteryear. Tring remained a ‘micro’ affair at least un l the early 2000s.

It was in 2002 when Gordon Brown (Chancellor of the Exchequer) introduced the revolu onary Progressive Beer Duty system, whereby the amount of tax paid was rela ve to the scale of produc on. This meant that the new microbreweries were now on a level playing field with the mul ­na onal brewing conglomerates.

If not allowing them to thrive, this tax incen ve at least allowed them to survive.

Under the dynamic partnership of Andrew and Richard, amidst the more innova ve terrain in Bri sh brewing, the brewery con nued to grow and grow. This con nued to a point whereby, in 2007 the brewery in Akeman Street reached capacity, brewing not just for Ridgeway, but a whole range of tradi onal Bri sh ales. One Tring beer which became much revered within the local pubs and social clubs was Andrew’s brainchild, Side Pocket For A Toad which took its name, as with most of the range, from old Her ordshire folklore.

There were refreshments, the selling of surplus fruit and vegetables, two vintage tractors on display and advice on how to keep bees.

As part of the open day there was a scarecrow compe on. Many allotments took part, and voted for by members of the public the winner was the inven ve golfer ‘A Birdie Pu ’ by Syd Garne of Caddington.

John Dudley form the Allotment Society commented, ‘The event was a real success and raised nearly £430. We also got lots of enquiries for ren ng plots too.’

Main Hall

The toilet facility at the Collings­Wells Hall in Caddington has been totally refurbished. The ceilings and walls have been stripped and insulated, the floors have been levelled and covered in easy clean non­slip vinyl, there are new cubicles with smart doors, the ladies’ has a new vanity unit and custom built cleaner's cupboard and the gents has been reconfigured to provide room for a disabled facility whilst s ll allowing space for a cubicle and two urinals.

Toilets

Extractor fans, low energy LED lights and an alarm system have also been included. In addi on, the foyer access to the toilets has also been insulated and decorated.

All this was made possible by a £30,000 grant from Biffa Award; a mul ­million pound fund that helps to build communi es and transform lives through awarding grants to community and environmental projects across the UK, as part of the Landfill Communi es Fund. 10% matched funding for the project was provided by the Angus Brewer Community Fund (ABCF) but a very substan al amount has had to come from the Hall's own resources.

Part way through the works it was agreed to extend the new toilet alarm system to cover the whole building at the Hall's own expense.

“Whilst the works have much improved an important hall facility, the management commi ee are aware that much more needs to done to bring the hall up to the overall standard they would like.

We are working on it,” said Peter Graham, Hall Chairman.

Knowing when to change your life and take control Sue Mitchell talks to Markyate resident, Katharine O’Kane of Suzukids

Today, we women can have it all. We can pursue a career, some mes being the main bread­winner and raise a family successfully and happily. But is this just too good to be true?

Because we can have it all, is there too much pressure on us to do too much? The fast pace, do­it­all modern way of living throws up many ques ons but it doesn’t always provide the answers. With the freedom and power of earning good money comes a lot of heartache and mental stress for many. One such woman is Markyate resident Katharine O’Kane who I met at the AL3 Business Group mee ng where she told the group about her career change from BBC Concert Orchestra cellist to self­employed music teacher, specialising in children playing classical instruments. Katharine decided to set up Suzukids a er the pressures of work, combined with the responsibili es of being a wife and mother of two young children, almost gave her a nervous breakdown. This is the story of Katharine’s brave and yet difficult decision to get off the tour bus once and for all, re­shape her life and take back control.

Tell us what life in the BBC Concert Orchestra was like.

Life in the BBC Concert Orchestra was extremely varied, not one week was the same. One day we might be in Abbey Road studios recording the music for a film, then the next day we might be in Cheltenham performing a Jazz Concert.

One of our regular dates was the Last Night of the Proms in the Park. We would play to thousands of people, performing classical music along with great ar sts like Kylie Minogue, Queen, Gary Barlow and Lang Lang. The most memorable concert we performed was at the Queen’s Jubilee outside Buckingham Palace. I also got to go to the a er party in the Palace; that was amazing! We were also the band performing at Sports Personality of the Year. The atmosphere was incredible during the 2012 event as we had just had the Olympics.

How did you know that you were struggling to juggle everything?

In terms of juggling my work and home, it was always tricky, but I have an amazingly suppor ve husband who would look a er the children when I was away or back very late. Deep down I wanted to be with my children much more, but couldn't see a way out as I had only ever played the cello professionally.

What were the problems?

It was in December 2016 when things started to unravel. For years, I had suppressed my feelings of wan ng to be at home more o en and it finally all came to a head last December. It was a Sunday a ernoon and another working weekend when I was performing in the Barbican Hall in London.

We had just had the rehearsal and we had a dinner break before the concert. I went out on my own and broke down on the phone to my sister saying I couldn't do this anymore and I just wanted to be a mum. She is also a musician so she understood the an social lifestyle very well.

I came home and called in sick the next day with stress. I was given a few months off to recover and it was then I decided that I needed to make some dras c changes to my life, if I wanted to be happy for myself and my family.

What did your husband think about it?

When I told him that I wanted to leave the BBC Concert Orchestra he was very suppor ve, but it soon dawned on him that we were going to lose a whole salary coming in each month.

What made you make the move?

We talked about it and I decided to build up my teaching studio as I was teaching throughout my playing career and had a client base. I love teaching the cello and piano, nurturing children’s skills and seeing how they develop through music.

Tell me about your new lifestyle I feel a lot more content now and enjoy not having to travel all the me. I love being able to do the school run with my boys and having a rou ne in my life is a novelty and I love it.

I have met so many wonderful adults and kids whilst teaching and I love it when the parents sit and listen to the lessons.

How are you feeling now?

I really feel like I am making a difference now, whereas I didn't feel so fulfilled in the Orchestra. Just seeing my pupils come into their lessons being extremely excited because they have mastered a piece that they have been learning is such a rewarding experience.

I have been back to work to catch up with my old work colleagues, but I have never looked back since I le . I feel that I am blessed with doing a job I love and being with my family as well.

edbourn Community Library Volunteers, many in grey hoodies with the new logo displayed, manned a book stall selling a wide range of children’s, fic on and non­fic on books.

The weather was wet and we er and like many stall holders, they eventually had to give­up just a er 5pm!

“Despite the weather, we made £117.06 for the Community Library Funds. I’m not sure where the 6p came from as all the booked were priced at 50p or £1.00!” said Ruth Crowther.

They took this opportunity to present the children who had completed the Summer Reading Challenge with their cer ficates and medals. This was just achieved before the first torren al downpour of the a ernoon. Over 100 children took part this year and 30 braved the condi ons to a end the event and receive their awards in the rain!

Winter Flower Fes val to save St Leonard’s, Flamstead 24th­26th November

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe are coming to Flamstead in a bid to help rescue the village's medieval church.

A Winter Flower Fes val on the theme of Narnia, from the famous CS Lewis children's books, will be held on November 24/25/26 at St.Leonard's Church Flamstead.

Walk through the wardrobe at the entrance to the church and you will enter a magical world of winter displays created by designers and arrangers who worked on the acclaimed St Albans Abbey Flower Fes val.

The Fes val is part of a major fund­raising ini a ve with the church ­ home to rare medieval murals ­ facing a bill close to £1million due to water damage to the roof mbers and walls as well as an infesta on of death watch beetle.

"We are rallying as a community and this winter we are hos ng a magnificent flower fes val on the theme of ‘Narnia’. The church will be turned into the mys cal world imagined in the novels of C.S. Lewis; so why not step in through the wardrobe and see this magnificent sight for yourself.

Seasonal refreshments are on offer to get you into the spirit of winter!"

The Fes val will be open from 10am to 5pm on Friday and Saturday and 12 noon to 5pm on Sunday, with ckets for sale on the door at £5 each. Seasonal refreshments will also be available as well as Christmas wreaths ­ perfect for last minute decora ons or gi s.

There will be a special preview evening complete with musical entertainment on Thursday November 23rd at 7.30pm.

Con nuing on the ‘Legal Ma ers Made Simple’ series, Barney Laurence, Partner in the Dispute Resolu on team at Sherrards Solicitors, discusses so­ called “shot across the bows” le ers. Read on to find out more…

Restric ve covenant issues arise very frequently in business, and typically involve employees leaving their employer and se ng up in compe on, poaching staff, or solici ng the business of their former employer’s clients and customers. Broadly, unless there is a wri en contract in place that contains well­dra ed restric ve covenants that restrict what the former employee can and cannot do a er having le , the former employer is powerless to prevent compe on. But if there are enforceable covenants in place, they can be used to bring an errant former employee into line and represent a very powerful tool in protec ng a business’ commercial interests.

What commonly happens is that suspicion – but not hard evidence – of wrongdoing on the part of the former employee comes to light; it is o en based on hearsay and word of mouth. At this point, employers tend to instruct their lawyers to “go in hard”, but that’s not always the best tac c, especially where there is a lack of eviden al material available.

Unless you intend to – and are in a posi on to – follow through with formal legal ac on, think twice before sending a warning le er to an ex­employee. The “shot across the bows” le ers are commonly sent out to warn against breaching post­termina on restric ve covenants, but they invariably do li le more than p the former employee off that you’re onto them, and prompt them to cover their tracks more carefully (making it harder for you as the former employer to substan ate your concerns).

They are o en sent for emo onal reasons or else prompted by mere suspicion (as opposed to proof) of wrongdoing, rather than on the basis of any actual evidence of unlawful behaviour. This limits the impact of the le er and can make the sender (the former employer) appear needlessly aggressive.

Of course, in some circumstances it is appropriate to send warning le ers, but more o en than not a former employer would do be er to sit ght and wait un l actual evidence of unlawful conduct emerges, and send out formal pre­ac on correspondence at that point.

That way, the le er has more clout and will be far more effec ve in terms of what it is intended to achieve, which is to stop unlawful conduct and “send out the message” that, as a business, you will not tolerate such ac vity. It will also put you in good stead in the event that you do need to follow through with Court ac on.

Warning le ers are not to be confused with reminder le ers. Commonly, an outgoing employee will be sent a le er by the employer at or around the me of leaving, which (as well as dealing with other ma ers) reminds the employee of restric ve covenants in the contract of employment. This does no harm at all and is to be encouraged as a standard procedural step because it makes it much harder for an outgoing employee to claim that he or she had no recollec on of any such covenants.

Winning Tickets to the Game Fair through MiMagazine has changed the life of Penny Hutchings Penny Hutchings won a pair of complimentary tickets to the 2017 Game Fair via MiMagazine’s reader competition and following her day at the show, she decided to make changes to her pet care business to working solely with dogs from the Gun Dog breeds .

Penny said, “From speaking with you last, I have had lots of positive feedback and I have taken on six new clients in the last month. Wishing not to restrict my business too much in the early stages, I have decide d to open it up not just to gun dogs but to all breeds of dog as long as they have a high drive to play, retrieve and engage which a lot of dogs do. My six current clients are two Springer Spaniels, one Cocker Spaniel, two Labradors and a Golden Retriever (all from the gun dog group) and I am positive that this number will grow.

I was so inspired by the Game Fair, that on a person al level, I have been working hard training my own Labradors and I have made it my own little missio n for them to be good enough to compete at the 2018 Game Fair in Warwickshire. Let’s hope so anyway.

Pumpkins galore at The Pop­Up Farm

E

ven farming has got pop­ups these days and one such venture local to MiMag’s circula on was the pumpkin farm, just off the roundabout, under the M1 junc on 9.

The pop­up farm, a new concept in seasonal farming, has grown varie es of pumpkins and squash from plan ng in June to ripe yellow and orange fruits of differing sizes. The general­public are invited to choose their pumpkins, which are sold by weight and not surprisingly, it has been very popular as we approach Halloween. Talking to farmer Ian Pigo , he said, “This is a new venture for us. Farming post Brexit is very uncertain so we are looking at new ways to produce food that people want to buy. We have had a massive interest in the project with over 26,000 people reading our FB pos ng from near and far. We are delighted with the interest so let’s see what happens.”
