The transformation of Harpenden...

Discover the remarkable story of Harpenden’s transformation between the two World Wars in a fascinating exhibition exploring one of the most dramatic periods of change in the town’s past – and which continues to shape Harpenden’s layout today.

Between 1919 and 1938, Harpenden expanded far beyond its Edwardian village centre, merging with Batford and Southdown to create the footprint of the town we recognise today. During this period, the population almost doubled, from 7,000 to 13,000, driven by new housing developments, town planning, and changing patterns of work and transport. Roughly one­fifth of present day residents live in 1930s built houses.

The Harpenden History Society’s ‘Special Exhibition’ – Inter­war Development in Harpenden 1919­39 – is running at the Eric Morecambe Centre until September.

The exhibition first explores the key forces behind this dramatic growth: the impact of post­war housing policy, the role of local authorities and major developers such as Catton and Jarvis, and the expansion of transport links such as the Nickey Line.

You can see more than 40 historic maps and photos from the Society’s archives to follow this

dramatic growth. The exhibition focuses on the 1925 ‘Red Dot’ planning map used by Harpenden Town Council and highlights eight main areas to explain how and why that part of Harpenden developed, for example, Sun Lane was widened for access to the new Westfield Road, and learn how Round Sun Lane widening December 1930 Wood got its name.

Visit the exhibition then walk around town and find the changes in the streets and houses around you. Or search for your own house on the ‘Red Dot’ planning map.

The exhibition is open from 11am­3pm, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

MiMagazine chats with... Toby Newcombe Toby Newcombe is a guitar tutor and musician who lives in Flamstead with his wife Ali, their golden retriever Gary, cat Jacey and a small flock of chickens. He runs Toby’s Music Lessons from his home studio, teaching guitar and bass to children and adults of all ages and abilities.

What sparked your interest in guitar playing? I was completely obsessed with music from a young age. I remember hearing bands my parents listened to such as Led Zeppelin, Genesis, Sting, Michael Jackson and The Beatles and just wanting to know how those sounds were made. My parents bought me a small keyboard when I was around five years old and were so impressed when I learnt to play soap opera theme tunes by ear that they got me into lessons. I picked up the guitar a few years later because I was heavily into Jimi Hendrix and wanted to play just like him!

What does your work involve? Any memorable moments? I teach guitar and bass full time from my studio in Flamstead. I work seven days a week teaching everyone from complete beginners through to advanced players. I also do recording and production work for local singer­songwriters and play weddings and parties in my function band at weekends. One memorable moment was hiring one of my old students to play bass at my wedding to Ali. They were absolutely superb and I felt a great deal of pride watching them perform.

What gives you the most satisfaction from your work? Being a one­to­one teacher, I meet many fascinating people from all walks of life. It’s great developing relationships with them and sharing everything I know about music. A lot of students arrive thinking they’re “not musical” or that they’ve “got no rhythm”, and then six months later they’re playing songs they never thought they’d manage.

What was your first job? Aside from paper rounds and shop work as a teenager, my first proper teaching job was at a local music school in St Albans while I was still at university. I would come back every weekend and teach a full day,

which just about paid for my train ticket, but I loved it so much it didn’t feel like work.

Any hobbies or pastimes? Aside from music I love woodworking and building projects around the house. I’ve recently been making a new garden bench from some old pallets a neighbour kindly gave me. I also really enjoy walking my dog around the local area, exploring new footpaths and meeting other dog owners – there are so many great places to explore round here.

Book you most enjoyed or that inspired you?

Probably The Creative Act by Rick Rubin. It’s not really about music specifically – more about creativity and trusting your instincts. It’s one of those books that makes you want to go and make something.

Film/TV Show you most enjoyed? I love anything with a great soundtrack or atmosphere. O Brother, Where Art Thou? is probably up there because the music is almost a character in the film. TV­wise I loved Clarkson’s Farm. It’s funny but also surprisingly honest about how difficult rural life can actually be.

Favourite drink? I love coffee – I’m a huge fan of James Hoffmann and I’m into making freshly brewed drip coffee at the moment. I’m also very fond of a pint or two down my local pub.

Favourite meal? Probably great barbecue food – slow cooked meats, proper smoky flavours and good sides. Although my wife’s homemade chilli is hard to beat too.

Best holiday or weekend break? A road trip through the southern United States with my wife Ali. We travelled alongside the Mississippi River through places like Nashville, Memphis and New Orleans listening to blues music, eating amazing food and soaking up the atmosphere. We even saw the famous Crossroads in Clarksdale! As a blues musician it felt a bit like visiting the source code.

If you could invite any four people to a dinner party, who would they be? Paul McCartney because he seems incredibly genuine and I’d love to talk songwriting with him. Rick Rubin because I find the way he thinks fascinating. Jeremy Clarkson because he’d keep everybody entertained, and Marco Pierre White because the food and conversation would immediately improve.

Why should I write a will?

M

any people assume that writing a Will is something to be done later in life, or only when they have accumulated significant wealth. In reality, a Will is one of the most important documents an adult can put in place, regardless of age or circumstances. It ensures that your wishes are known, respected, and legally binding after your death.

A Will allows you to decide exactly who should benefit from your estate, rather than leaving those decisions to rigid intestacy rules.

Without a Will, the law determines who inherits, and this can produce outcomes that are entirely at odds with what you would have wanted. Unmarried partners, stepchildren, close friends, and charities often receive nothing under the intestacy rules, no matter how close the relationship.

Writing a Will also enables you to appoint executors – people you trust to deal with your affairs – and, where relevant, guardians for minor children. For parents, this is often the single most compelling reason to make a Will, as it provides clarity and stability at an already difficult time.

A properly drafted Will can also incorporate

planning measures to protect assets for future generations. This may include safeguarding an inheritance from remarriage, divorce, creditors, or care fees, and ensuring that family wealth passes in a controlled and considered way. For couples, particularly those with children from previous relationships, this type of planning can be essential.

Many people worry that making a Will is complex or expensive. In fact, the process is usually straightforward when handled correctly and is far less costly than the problems that can arise if no Will is in place. A professionally prepared Will provides certainty, reduces the likelihood of disputes, and makes the administration of the estate far simpler for those left behind.

Ultimately, a Will is not about death; it is about responsibility. It is about taking control, providing clarity, and protecting the people who matter most to you.

Making the most of your

garden this summer

S

ummer is when gardens really come into their own. Borders begin to fill out, hanging baskets overflow with colour, and outdoor spaces become somewhere to enjoy with family and friends. It’s also one of the busiest times of year for keeping gardens healthy and looking their best.

At this time of year, a lot of my work is about regular garden care and keeping on top of things before they become overwhelming.

Lawns need consistent mowing, borders benefit from weeding, feeding and mulching, and shrubs often need light pruning to encourage healthy growth.

Watering properly during warmer spells also makes a huge difference, especially for newer plants that are still establishing themselves.

Early summer is also ideal for planting up beds, pots and hanging baskets once the risk of frost has passed.

I grow many of my own plants at home, including annual bedding plants, perennials and hanging basket favourites such as fuchsias, geraniums and petunias. I also enjoy giving For editorial and advertising call 07939 005218

neglected plants a second chance, carefully nurturing them back to health before selecting the strongest varieties for clients’ gardens.

It’s a more sustainable approach and often results in plants that are already well­adapted and thriving.

Summer is also a great time for smaller landscaping projects that make an immediate difference. Raised sleeper beds, new border layouts, pergolas, trellises and small patio areas can all help transform how a garden is used without needing a major redesign. I always try to offer the full picture, not just building or planting a space, but helping it develop and look its best long after the work is finished.

Good gardens are rarely created overnight. They grow steadily through care, attention, and an understanding of what works best in each space.

A personal journey...

I

’m Emma, a young entrepreneur running a small beauty business based in Hertfordshire. As a one­woman band offering a range of beauty treatments, I’ve always been passionate about connecting with people and building personal relationships with my clients.

Beauty therapy is all I’ve ever done since I was 15 years old.

However, my journey hasn’t always been smooth sailing.

Since my mid teens, I’ve suffered from debilitating symptoms including severe gut issues, chronic pain, and extreme fatigue… the list goes on.

After years of back and forth doctor appointments with no real answers or diagnosis, I was left feeling deflated and forced to struggle in silence while trying to live as a normal young woman with ambitions to grow in every aspect of life.

Instead, I often felt held back by my own body, with very little medical support, to the point that I spent the last two crucial years of secondary school mostly at home.

Living with chronic illness affects every part of your life. It impacts your confidence, relationships, mental health, and ability to achieve your goals. Running a business while battling ongoing health struggles and poor mental health as a result, you can imagine it’s been exhausting. Sadly, something only those who have experienced it can truly understand.

Fortunately, my wonderful clients have played a huge role in supporting me throughout my journey. In the salon, we share stories,

advice or just simply offered each other a listening ear or a hand to hold during difficult times.

Through these conversations, I realised just how common it is for women to experience similar symptoms and still feel dismissed by medical professionals.

In April 2026, at the age of 25, I finally received my long awaited diagnosis: endometriosis – a chronic inflammatory condition that can affect the whole body.

At this moment in time, the only way to officially diagnose and treat endometriosis is through surgery called a ‘laparoscopy’. I underwent this surgery and I am currently recovering. However, having this procedure doesn’t mean that you’re ‘fixed’. This may only ease the symptoms temporarily.

For many women, including myself, the diagnosis process takes an average of 8­10 years.

Currently, 1 in 10 women are thought to suffer from endometriosis, yet the condition remains hugely underfunded and under­recognised.

It’s been a bitter sweet feeling receiving the diagnosis, however, the hard work doesn’t stop here. In order to keep my symptoms and the condition at bay as best I can, I aim to live an ‘anti inflammatory’ lifestyle alongside using other therapies such as homeopathy.

By sharing my story, I hope to raise awareness and encourage other women to speak up, push for further testing, and fight to be taken seriously by medical professionals. Every woman deserves answers, support, and access to proper treatment.

Since my diagnosis, I’ve created an Instagram platform where I share content about chronic illness in the hope of helping others feel seen, understood, and less alone in their journey.

SERMI – What motorists need to know

The automotive aftermarket is changing fast. As vehicle security and digitalisation increase, access to critical repair data is becoming more restricted. One of the most significant developments is SERMI — but what is it, and why does it matter?

S

ERMI (Security Related Vehicle Repair and Maintenance Information) is a Europe wide accreditation scheme that authorises access to sensitive vehicle security data. Although outside the EU, the UK is the first non EU country to adopt SERMI, with enforcement beginning on 1 April 2026.

First introduced in Sweden in 2023 and now rolling out across Europe, SERMI places security and accountability at the centre of vehicle repair. In the UK, the scheme is operated by RMI Standards and Certification (RMISC) and applies to independent garages, not manufacturer affiliated dealers.

Its purpose is simple: to give authorised independent workshops legitimate access to vehicle security data that was previously restricted to franchised dealers.

Many major manufacturers have already joined the scheme, including Citroen, Ford, Jaguar Land Rover, Mercedes Benz, Nissan, Stellantis brands, Toyota, Vauxhall and others, with more expected to follow.

Why SERMI matters SERMI provides a secure authorisation trail showing who accessed which vehicle, when, and why. It strengthens data security, reduces vehicle theft and fraud, and protects both motorists and manufacturers.

The scheme replaces multiple manufacturer specific approvals with one unified system, reducing complexity while raising standards. It also helps prevent unqualified individuals from working on security critical systems, supporting higher repair standards and consumer protection.

Carrot cake

There’s nothing better than tucking into a slice of classic carrot cake, whether for a tasty afternoon treat or scrumptious dessert. Try this light and moist cake, spiced with cinnamon, topped with thick creamy frosting, crushed walnuts and seeds, and a sprinkle of carrot to finish.

Step 1 For the cake Pre­heat the oven to 170°C (150°C fan/gas mark 4). Place the sugar, eggs and vanilla flavouring in a large bowl.

Step 2 Place the flour, bicarbonate of soda, baking powder, cinnamon and salt in another bowl. Use a spoon to mix together.

Step 3 Whisk the sugar, eggs, and vanilla together until light and fluffy. With the whisk going, gradually pour in the oil. Once all has been added, stop whisking.

Step 4 Tip the flour mixture into the oil mixture and fold through. While still quite lumpy, add the carrots and chopped walnuts. Continue to mix until evenly combined.

Ingredients For the cake 220g soft light brown sugar 4 eggs 1 tbsp vanilla flavouring 400g plain flour 1½ tsp bicarbonate of soda 2 tsp baking powder 2 tsp ground cinnamon 1 tsp salt 400ml vegetable oil 500g carrots, grated 75g walnut pieces For the frosting 400g icing sugar 50g butter 125g cream cheese For the topping 20g walnut pieces 20g pumpkin seeds 2g caraway seeds 10g sunflower seeds 150g carrots, julienne 50g caster sugar

Step 5 Make the carrot cake in two 23cm loose­bottomed baking tins. Divide the combined mixture between the tins and put in the pre­heated oven.

Step 6 Cook for 25­30 minutes or until risen and golden.

Check that it’s ready by inserting a skewer into the middle to see if it comes out clean. Remove from the tins and leave to cool.

Step 7 For the frosting Place the icing sugar and butter in a bowl and mix on medium speed until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.

Step 8 Add the cream cheese in one go and beat until incorporated.

Continue to beat until the frosting is light and fluffy (at least 5 minutes).

You can chill this to make it thicken up when it’s whisked.

Step 9 Sandwich the cakes together with a little of the frosting then spread the rest over the top and use a fork to leave a rough surface.

Step 10 For the topping Place the walnuts, pumpkin seeds, caraway seeds, and sunflower seeds in a frying pan and toast them briefly. Leave to cool before sprinkling over the top of the cake.

Step 11 Dissolve the sugar in a little water. Bring to the boil and add the carrots. Stir well and boil for 30­40 seconds. Remove from the heat and leave to cool before scattering over the top of the cake.

Beechwood Park School Where cricket matters...

A

s the Summer Term begins at Beechwood Park School in Markyate, Hertfordshire, attention turns to one of the school’s many standout features: its cricket grounds. Behind every fixture, training session and perfectly prepared wicket lies a huge amount of unseen work, led by Head of Grounds, Tom Robinson (pictured right), and his dedicated team.

Spread across the school’s 60­acre estate are three cricket squares, an artificial wicket, outdoor practice nets and indoor facilities – all of which require year­round care and precision maintenance. For Tom, preparing for cricket season is not something that begins a few days before the first match; it is an ongoing process that starts as early as February half term and continues long after the season ends.

“The squares need constant attention,” Tom explains. “It’s never a case of simply switching them on for the summer. Everything is built up gradually over time, so the surfaces are ready when the players need them.”

That preparation involves an intensive programme of rolling, scarifying, Verti­cutting and specialist treatments designed to strengthen the

grass and create consistent playing conditions.

Every detail matters. Heavy machinery is kept away from the squares wherever possible, with most of the work carried out using pedestrian equipment to preserve the smooth, level surfaces required for cricket.

Tom estimates that maintaining the squares alone can involve walking several kilometres each day, with long hours spent cutting, brushing, and preparing wickets to match standard. As fixtures begin, individual wickets are selected and prepared up to a week in advance, with careful rolling and power brushing helping to produce the right balance of pace and bounce for play.

24 Flynn Robinson grew up locally and in 2004, aged four, he started at Beechwood Park School in Markyate. Over the years he founded the school’s ‘Green Fingers’ gardening club, took on technical responsibilities and lighting for assemblies and theatre productions, became the teachers’ go-to for tech problems, made short films, and even filmed a video interview with the headmaster. In his final year he was awarded the Cooper Cup of Endeavour. At 13, his good friend James Buddrige roped him into building websites for local clients – his first proper business. Several more ventures followed, until his decision to commit fully to the idea he’d been quietly developing since sixth form: scOS. He still lives locally in Caddington and now works on scOS full time.

The deterrent has gone

I

’m not here to scare you – I want us to start solving the issues together and make our homes safer.

You turn off the lights, lock up the house and head out for the evening – dinner with friends, a quiz night, a quick shop – thinking nothing of it.

At the back of the house, someone quietly hops your garden fence and snaps the patio lock with a pair of pliers in around three seconds. The alarm sounds. But here’s the twist: as in a recent Harpenden case, they retreat to watch from afar, waiting for it to self­silence. Just like your leisurely dinner with friends, the criminals have all the time they need to come back in. Out comes a metal detector to find the safe. Out goes the jewellery that can never be replaced. That is a home invasion. And these aren’t hypotheticals, they’re posted weekly on local Facebook communities, taken straight from people’s own CCTV. Across the past five years, 2,658 property crimes were recorded across the roughly 10,000 homes this magazine serves; about one for every four.

From the customers I have spoken to, the real number is far higher. Someone stood at your front door, then walked away. Four figures in balaclavas passing your window. No crime, but unsettling. The person at your gate is your problem alone.

So why is crime still this prevalent in 2026?

For decades, the police were the deterrent. A patrol car turning the corner was enough. Officer numbers are actually up, but crime has outpaced them; the local presence that used to make a criminal think twice just isn’t a regular sight any more. A 101 call doesn’t help you tonight.

What upsets me most isn’t crime as a statistic. It’s the repetition of the same story. People work hard.

They come home, want to be with their family, watch Netflix, make dinner. And then a stranger – perhaps more than one – walks through the front door and takes what isn’t theirs. Most people don’t dwell on it. It won’t happen to them. It’s someone else’s problem. Until one evening, it isn’t.

This is something I – a local resident working in home security – have been thinking about for years, shaped by friends who’d been burgled and the steady drumbeat of stories like these.

The tech exists. It just isn’t pointed at your house The world’s best technology is all around us, but it pays better to sell to big businesses than to ordinary homes. Many in our area still rely on systems installed years ago, yet they haven’t stopped crime – they’ve only improved how well it is recorded.

That’s not necessarily a flaw in the product. It’s a mismatch between what it was built for and what people now expect from it.

“The product hasn’t changed; what changed is that people now buy it hoping it will deter, when it was only ever built to record.”

That is the point: we need to be more proactive if we are to stop crime.

Over the past few years, that awareness led me to start building a system designed not just to observe what’s happening, but to automatically respond to it; something that could recognise when behaviour falls outside the normal rhythm of a home and intervene in that moment.

It learns what is typical: • The milkman at six.

• The post on weekdays.

• Your son coming home at 2am, etc.

So that anything unusual stands out immediately.

The aim isn’t to monitor constantly, but to react when something doesn’t feel right.

Criminals plan rationally; in the act, irrationality takes over. What if something intervened at the moment they crossed onto your property? They would be the ones who feel vulnerable.

This is already visible in small ways. People who have run outside and scared someone off. A bright light that switches on at the right moment. Even something as simple as a sprinkler activating as someone approaches a door can be enough to make them leave.

The principle is straightforward: you don’t need to catch someone – you just need to spoil the opportunity and make them think twice.

Systems now being developed aim to do the same thing more consistently, using light, sound and timing to interrupt that moment. Not to escalate a situation, but to shift the balance; to make staying feel like the riskier option.

Because ultimately, that’s what’s been missing.

Some small steps In the meantime, these small steps still make a difference: • Check your flood lights work. A blown bulb is the same as no light at all.

• Slide an old broom handle into the track of any sliding patio doors.

• Keep your holiday plans to yourself until you get back. You may not post holiday photos online, but your children might.

Beating the Bounds

M

ay saw the annual Redbourn ceremony of Beating the Bounds, a tradition that has been practiced since at least Anglo­Saxon times as it is mentioned in a law passed by Alfred the Great in the 9th century.

And it’s possibly one of the last times that the parish boundary will pass entirely through open countryside, as housing development is proposed for most of the western side.

Before modern maps it was important to ensure that every parish knew the landmarks marking their boundary, and that other Parishes were not taking over land they had no right to.

Therefore the community would gather together to walk the entire boundary, before concluding events with a ‘Parish Ale’ – a feast involving the consumption of much ale.

Redbourn Village Museum is open on Saturday and Sunday, 2pm to 5pm, from February to November.

Part of the tradition includes making the landmarks more memorable for young people, originally by beating them at such locations, but more recently by giving them the ‘bumps’.

Redbourn is a relatively large parish, with a boundary of around 16 miles, so the entire event takes some eight hours, but participants may choose to just do part of it each year.

Caddington WI kicked off its April meeting with a fun quiz followed by home­made cakes from one of the members. Kites Connect Festival returns to Dunstable Downs for 2026 after the success of last year’s event for another celebration of community, creativity and the wonder of kite flying. The free two­day event takes place on Saturday August 1 and Sunday August 2, from 10am­5pm.

The National Pub 7s returns to Harpenden Rugby Club in Redbourn Lane on Saturday 27th June for its 60th birthday. There will be more than 60 teams across the men’s, women’s and vets tournaments in a day packed full of rugby.
