Much more than a ploughing match...

The Hertfordshire County Show is one of the county’s flagship events – attracting more than 32,000 visitors across the last May bank holiday weekend. It is a fantastic way to see all the traditional skills that keep our countryside beautiful, as well as a way to interact with, and support, local traders.

Run by the Hertfordshire Agricultural Society, the show can trace its origins back to a ploughing match on the grounds of Hatfield House in 1879, becoming a full County Show seven years later.

Since 1962, it has been held at the Showground in Redbourn, but prior to this it was staged at various locations across the county.

The show is organised to raise vital funds for the Hertfordshire Agricultural Society to support its activities throughout the year. The society dates all the way back to 1801, and was set up with the aim of promoting farming and agriculture and all associated skills, crafts, trades and professions. It is why visitors are encouraged to visit the Hertfordshire Farmyard and ‘Meet The Farmer’.

Through the years, this objective has grown to include ‘support local businesses, services and enterprises’, so around the Showground you’ll find talented artisans, producers and traders from across the county – a showcase of Hertfordshire’s finest.

The show still maintains many traditional County Show values, such as the equine and livestock showing, as well as show jumping, while the Grand Parade is a spectacular display of more than 50 animals each day.

This year’s Hertfordshire County Show will be held on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th of May. Get ready for some high‑octane action with quad bike stuntman Paul Hannam, cheer on the speedy ponies and their talented jockeys as JPL Racing returns for 2026, visit the award‑winning SASA School of Performing Arts’ vibrant, high‑energy children’s area, enjoy sheepdog displays across both days and explore a fantastic collection of vintage tractors. There’s also plenty of live music.

Chris Blow runs The Cozy Snug in Redbourn with his partner Emily: “I have 2 wonderful kids, Ellie 7, and Lexi 15; they inspire me to keep striving for bigger and better success so that they have a legacy to continue. My parents, who have been extremely supportive with all my ideas and choices throughout my life, and then finally, but not least, Emily, who puts up with me. They’re all the people who keep me grounded and keep me going.”

What inspired you to open The Cozy Snug?

To bring the local community together and see people connect and relax.

How difficult has it been? It started from an idea of always wanting my own shop where I could bring people together, to then finding the perfect building, to then putting it all in motion. However, it was all worth the long days and nights to see it so busy and thriving; now it really is a dream come true.

How do you fit this in with your other business interests? Because I have the amazing support of my incredible partner Emily, who deals with the day­to­day running of the place, and my wonderful family who also work there helping us out. It really brings the family atmosphere, creating a real home from home vibe in our ‘cozy’ little cafe.

What gives you the most satisfaction from your work? Seeing the smile on the customers faces and having a chin wag; getting to know the local community and our

What was your first job? I left school at 14 and started straight on the roofs, where it taught me a lot about people and the way of life. I loved the fact that every day was different and I got to interact with lots of different people daily; I always liked to be a ‘people person’ and enjoy making people laugh with my cheeky little chappy ways and ‘perfect white teeth’ – this smile got me out of a lot of trouble!

Any hobbies or pastimes? I’m a huge Arsenal fan (even comes before Emily – lol) and I love my fishing, especially carp fishing.

There’s nothing better than waking up in the morning and seeing the sun rise over the steamy lake and hearing the wildlife wake up while I’m enjoying a coffee.

Book you most enjoyed or that inspired you?

I can’t say I have one specific book I’ve enjoyed but I do enjoy biographies from sports people and businessmen; and I did read the Krays, (after that I thought I could take on the world).

I find their stories interesting – the things they’ve been through and their lived experiences, their successes and failures.

Film/TV Show you most enjoyed? Football and Only Fools and Horses. I reckon I’m a modern­day Del Boy – ‘this time next year I’ll be a millionaire’, lol.

Favourite drink? Protein shakes and smoothies; however, I am partial to Guinness!

Favourite meal? We love to go out for an Italian!

Best holiday or weekend break? When Emily and I watched the sunset on the beach in Spain two years ago; a memory I will never forget.

If you could invite anyone to a dinner party, who would they be? Del Boy, Rodney and Uncle Albert.

The inevitable shift in the approach to intergenerational wealth transfer Pension savers intending to pass on their retirement funds to loved ones received unwelcome news following announcements in the 2024 Budget. The Chancellor revealed that pensions will soon be subject to Inheritance Tax (IHT), marking a significant change from previous rules that usually protected pension funds from tax upon death.

This change will take effect from 6 April 2027, meaning children inheriting their parents’ pension savings could face a significant tax bill that was previously avoidable.

From April 2027, unused pension funds and certain death benefits will be brought into scope for IHT, meaning they may form part of your estate for tax purposes.

Now that pensions are set to fall within the scope of IHT, surviving unmarried partners could end up with considerably less income and, consequently, a lower standard of living in retirement.

Administration and strategic shifts According to The Treasury, pension scheme administrators (PSAs) will be responsible for reporting and paying any IHT due on unused pension funds and death benefits. Including pensions in the IHT net is likely to encourage many savers to consider alternative ways of passing on their wealth without facing a significant tax bill.

The long­standing practice of shielding pensions from IHT has been a key element of retirement planning; removing this benefit will inevitably alter

We might see more pensioners inclined to draw down their pension funds during their lifetime rather than leaving them as inheritance.

Rethinking your financial future This change could direct attention towards other tax­efficient savings options, such as Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs). While ISAs offer tax­ efficient growth and withdrawals, pensions still provide immediate tax relief on contributions and may include employer contributions. However, their appeal as a method of passing on wealth might be diminished by these new factors, encouraging some savers to make more generous gifts during their lifetime.

Gifts benefit from the ‘seven­year rule’, meaning if a gift is made more than seven years before a donor’s death, no IHT is payable. There are also several other gift allowances available that haven’t been affected by the Budget. While the changes are significant, avoid making panic decisions. It is worth noting that estate planning and determining the best way to manage your pension can be complex, and professional advice is often the safest approach.

Why do we need a Property Protection Trust?

M

ost couples hope that their estate will pass to their children and grandchildren eventually.

But this will not happen for many, unless careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay care home fees.

The solution to help protect a couple’s estate is a will incorporating a Property Protection Trust. These can only be executed whilst both partners remain alive. Upon death of one partner, their will specifies that their share of the property is placed into trust and names the ultimate beneficiary of this share, normally the children and grandchildren.

But under the terms of the trust the surviving partner has the unequivocal right to remain living in the property for

the rest of their life. On the death of the other partner the trust comes to an end and the property passes to the beneficiaries.

As the surviving partner does not own the deceased’s share of the property it is fully protected for the beneficiaries, so if the surviving partner requires care, or even remarries, this share of the beneficiary’s inheritance is protected. If the surviving partner wants to move they can still sell the property and the proceeds be used to purchase a new property; the terms of the trust remain over the new property.

According to the charity Brake, drug‐driving is a factor in more than 1 in 20 fatal crashes in the UK. And yet, walk along any street, drive on any motorway, even sit in your garden, and be prepared to inhale the unmistakeable pungent smell of illegal substances. So, how prevalent is drug‐driving and how does it impact us?

A

ccording to knowyourmedi.com, ‘while the terms ‘drug’ and ‘medicine’ are often used interchangeably, they do have distinct meanings: Medicines are specifically formulated substances intended to prevent, diagnose, treat or cure diseases. They undergo rigorous testing to ensure safety and efficacy and are typically prescribed by healthcare professionals. In contrast, drugs can refer to any substance that has a physiological effect, when ingested or otherwise introduced into the body.

Medicinal drugs Prescribed medication (by a medical professional) or some over­the­counter medications can impair a motorist’s ability to drive safely. It is important to understand if you could be affected by side effects such as drowsiness which can affect concentration, coordination, reaction times and even vision. It is always advised to read the information with the product and if you are unsure, speak to your pharmacist or GP for advice.

Drugs These broadly fall into 7 categories (some will appear in more than one) and classed in line with their risk (Class A­C plus another for new psychoactive substances causing concerns but not yet classed): • Opioids – Relieve pain and slow heart rate.

• Hallucinogens & Psychedelics – Alters a person’s perceptions of reality and awareness of their surroundings, as well as their own thoughts and feelings.

• Stimulants – Raise levels of physiological or nervous activity in the body. They speed up and increase activity in the body, ie, heart rate, alertness and energy.

• Depressants – Lowers neurotransmission levels, lowering cognitive abilities and slowing reactions.

• Dissociatives – Create feelings of relaxation, numbness or disconnection from the body.

• Cannabinoids – Create feelings of relaxation, getting ‘the giggles’ or sedation.

• Empathogens – Create feelings of being connected to others by releasing serotonin The most common of substances are: Cannabis, Cocaine, Heroin, Ketamine, LSD, MDMA, Meth and Speed.

They can create a false confidence, leading to faster driving and more risk taking. They may slower reaction times leading to greater braking distances or distort perception of reality leaving the user unable to judge speed and distance accurately.

Unlike medicine, drugs are unregulated and as such there is no measure of content of each compound (which can be mixed with other harmful substances), strength or safety. As each compound varies, so does the effect on each user.

Many factors will influence the user’s reaction such as frequency of use, eating habits, size, individual metabolism, etc, making it hard to establish how they will impair the user or how long it will remain in their system. However, it is likely to increase risk­ taking behaviour, putting lives at risk.

How do drugs affect driving?

The greatest risk of driving under the influence of drugs, is the risk of causing a collision. It is extremely dangerous and adversely affects drivers in various ways. The police list the risks and physical effects as: • Ability to judge speed and distance • Reaction and coordination skills • Blurry or impaired vision • Drowsiness • Aggression • Erratic behaviour • Panic attacks and paranoia • Hallucinations

13 • Nausea • Dizziness • Tremors The alarming outcome of these effects can be seen in the facts about drug­driving according to a charity, Brake: 2x

Greater risk of a fatal or serious injury crash, when driving on cannabis (16x when combined with alcohol) 2‐10x Greater risk of a fatal or serious injury crash, when driving on cocaine or opiates 5‐30x Greater risk of a fatal or serious injury crash, when driving on amphetamines The legal limit for drugs in your system is very low, and it is easy to underestimate the amount of time needed to wait before it is safe to drive. Even if you feel ok to drive, traces can remain in your system for hours or even days. The level in your system will be based on the strength of the drug taken and your reaction to it which, as explored above, is hard to determine. Regular or heavy users may test positive for several days.

What is the legal position?

It is an offence to drive impaired by drugs, and an offence to drive with certain controlled drugs in your system.

There is a zero­tolerance approach to the 8 drugs most associated with illegal use (listed earlier). This includes ingesting while driving.

If your driving leads the police to suspect that you have been driving while under the influence of drugs, they can stop you and conduct a roadside test. Even if you pass the test, you may still be arrested if the police suspect that your driving is impaired by drugs. The limits for illegal drugs are set very low so even trace amounts can be detected to prosecute offenders.

If you have been found to be guilty, you can receive: a criminal record, maximum 6 months in prison, unlimited fine, an automatic driving ban of 1­3 years. In addition, an endorsement remains on your driving licence for 11 years. It may cause increased insurance premiums and difficulty in obtaining a visa to travel.

Should there be a fatality, the maximum penalty is life imprisonment.

What’s the risk to motorists?

The Department of Transport (DoT) statistics show that around 90% of drivers impaired by drugs in collisions are male, and large proportion (4 in every 10) are aged between 17­30 (based on analysis of For editorial and advertising call 07939 005218

STATS19 data for collisions with ‘impaired by drugs’ as a contributory factor, 2018­2022 data).

The latest data also shows an increase in drug­ related collisions over the past 10 years: between 2014­2023, there was a 70% increase in driver fatalities where drugs were present.

The Think! survey showed that 32% of young men (17­30 year olds) think it is acceptable to drive if they feel fine after taking drugs and 46% of young men say they know someone who drives after taking drugs (Think! Survey, April 2025).

In December 2025, Think! launched a drug­ driving campaign targeted at young men: ‘Don’t put drugs in the driving seat’, to raise awareness.

So, as drivers, what can we do?

Sadly, it appears there are increasing numbers of drivers on the road unaware that driving under the influence of drugs severely impairs their driving.

While we depend on legislation and law enforcers to keep us safe, and the DoT to raise awareness, it is important that we take practical steps to mitigate harm should we encounter one of these drivers: n Make sure you are fit and healthy to drive and able to react quickly to changing situations. Remain vigilant to unpredictable behaviour, reacting appropriately and avoiding escalation. n Ensure your vehicle will react quickly and respond to the demands you make of it in

emergency situations. A car service will ensure all the essential components are working effectively.

A basic service checks brake pads, brake discs, brake fluid, tyres, etc, to ensure you can stop quickly and safely. If you haven’t had yours done in a while, book it in with your trusted garage. Be aware if cheaper parts or oils have been used as they are prone to premature wear, so may need checking more regularly. An MOT does not check the same. GOLFER

Spotting a good golfer goes beyond just observing a smooth swing or pure consistency. Louis Downie highlights four key traits that distinguish skilled players and offer valuable lessons for anyone looking to improve.

Quality of routine Consistency in pre‐shot routine: A good golfer almost always has a deliberate and consistent pre­ shot routine. This could be physical, like the distinctive movements of athletes such as Johnny Wilkinson or Cristiano Ronaldo, before executing a critical play.

Sharp short game Importance of short game: A good golfer excels in their short game – chipping, pitching and putting.

It’s often said: “Drive for show, putt for dough.” The quickest way to improve your score is to get better at recovering around the green and minimising three­putts.

Mental routine: Skilled players also have a strong mental routine, asking key questions before each shot: “What’s the wind doing?” “How will the lie affect the shot?” By having these mental habits, good golfers improve their decision­making.

Positive momentum: Skilled players capitalise on the short game to keep their round on track, often maintaining momentum by avoiding bogeys and setting up birdie chances.

Lesson: Develop your own routine and stick to it to build mental focus and consistency in your shots.

Control of emotions Emotional balance: Exceptional golfers maintain composure after both good and bad shots. They don’t dwell on mistakes, nor do they ride the high of a great shot too long. Staying focused on the present shot is crucial, rather than worrying about the past or future.

Mental resilience: By staying calm and balanced, golfers can better analyse the next shot and avoid emotional pitfalls like frustration or overconfidence.

Lesson: Learn to control your emotions on the course. Stay calm, avoid reacting emotionally to shots, and stay focused on the task at hand.

Patience Long‐term patience: The best golfers understand that mastery comes with time, effort, and repetition. Gary Player’s quote, “A good golfer has the determination to win and the patience to wait for the breaks”, sums up the need for both persistence and patience in the game.

In‐round patience: On a hole­by­hole basis, skilled golfers resist the urge to rush or get ahead of themselves. They know that maintaining their strategy and composure over the course of the round often leads to better outcomes.

Lesson: Be patient with your progress. Focus on learning and developing your skills one step at a time, both on and off the course.

Lesson: Spend more time working on your short game. The better you are at chipping and putting, the more confident you’ll be on every shot.

One of the fastest ways to develop the habits of a good golfer is through structured lessons and purposeful practise. A golf professional can help you build the foundations strong players rely on. I often remind my clients that the best players in the world are world class at the basics. Those fundamentals, when understood and repeated correctly, create consistency and confidence.

Many golfers try to improve through trial and error, which often leads to confusion and inconsistency. With expert guidance, the process becomes far clearer and far more efficient rather than simply guessing and hoping for improvement.

You begin to understand why certain approaches work, why others do not, and how to make adjustments that suit your natural swing tendencies.

In my coaching we call these “match ups”, allowing your swing to function in a way that works for you.

It is also extremely difficult to diagnose your own swing or identify patterns in your game. A coach can quickly spot the areas that will make the biggest difference to your scores, whether that is improving contact, sharpening your short game, or managing the course more effectively.

Ultimately, golf lessons create an opportunity to build awareness. Awareness is what allows players to take ownership of their development. The more you understand about your swing, your tendencies, and your decision­making on the course, the more autonomy you gain over your game, allowing real and lasting improvement.

The Street of Inns...

T

he first exhibition of 2026 at Redbourn Village Museum is ‘The Inns and Public Houses of Redbourn’. This can be seen in the upstairs Skillman Gallery.

The exhibition focuses on the pubs that still remain, but also includes some of the 40 that have been lost. It is hard to believe that in total there have been 44 inns, or beer houses, in Redbourn over the years, due largely to the importance of the location of the village on Watling Street, especially during the coaching era when it was known as the ‘Street of Inns’.

The era of coaching inns declined sharply in the 1840s following the expansion of the national railway network, specifically the line from London to Birmingham.

The old public houses always fascinate museum visitors, and there many photographs of them plus memorabilia from inns past and present.

A pewter beer mug in the exhibition is inscribed with the name ‘W. (William) Fairfax’ who was landlord at The Holly Bush in 1822.

One of the oldest pubs in Redbourn, parts of The Holly Bush date back to the 16th century and the earliest written reference to it is from 1591 when it was known as the ‘Hollibushe’. There is a reference to it previously being known as ‘The Talbott’, possibly after the first Earl of Shrewsbury who was a notable military leader in the early 15th century.

In 1758 there was a hop garden at the rear of the pub and in the middle of the 19th century the ‘Old

Schoolroom’ was built to provide a basic education for children in the area – it is now used as a function room.

In 1948 the old stables and yard at the rear of the building were occupied by Sidney Statham as the original location for his garage and motor repair business.

The Holly Bush was taken over in 2003 by the Brakspear brewery, which carried out some major modernisation work, moving the toilets indoors and installing a proper kitchen. The old toilet building can still be seen next to the Schoolroom. It now houses the beer cellar.

There is also a new Brooke Bond display in the museum’s ‘Occupations Room’, together with a new interactive display where you can tap on a map of Redbourn and find photos, past and present, of the location you choose.

The museum is grateful to the Hertfordshire Association of Museums which awarded a grant that funded the new display equipment.

Redbourn Village Museum is open on Saturday and Sunday, 2pm to 5pm, from February to November.

A love triangle between a pilot, his actress wife and a famous film star highlights the tensions of love, loyalty and duty, while a barmaid questions whether her wartime marriage to a Polish Count will survive the cessation of hostilities.

The play offers a moving portrait of the bravery and stoicism of RAF bomber crews and their partners during the Second World War. There were some fascinating insights into what goes on, or not, in First Class travel. Knowledge of French wines, à la carte menus and the ability to carry out Silver Service are a few of the skills and etiquette needed. Her long and varied career has taken her all over the world. She looked after many ‘A Listers’ and also Royalty. She also has five acres of lavender fields which she started in Lockdown and now produces a variety of products for sale.

In February the group held a ‘Crazy Bag Whist’.

Participants brought three items to the value of £2, £1.50 and £1 in a bag and were divided into teams.

The winners of whist on each table chose something from the losers’ bag and then give the losers something from the winners’ bag. The winners then move tables, the losers stay where they are and the game starts again. It was probably the quietest meeting they have had as everyone was concentrating so hard but it was a lot of fun.

Demand for eco-friendly funerals on the rise

uton­based Neville Funerals has continued to see a rise in requests for sustainable funeral options amid a wider shift in consumer values.

The long­established funeral business has reported an increase in demand for environmentally conscious funerals, reflecting a wider trend across the UK as families seek greener, more personal ways to say goodbye.

It has seen a year­on­year rise in enquiries for natural burials, biodegradable coffins, and woodland memorials.

The rise comes amid growing national awareness of sustainability – and aligns with findings from the SunLife’s 2025 Cost of Dying Report, which found that 18% of people now consider environmental impact when planning a funeral, and over a third (34%) of funeral directors have reported a rise in demand for eco­friendly funeral options, including natural burials, biodegradable coffins and greener alternatives to cremation.

“We’ve seen a noticeable change in the kinds of questions families are asking,” says Matthew Mew, area business manager at Neville Funerals. “There’s a growing desire for funerals that feel more aligned with personal values and environmental concerns.”

settings. Graves are marked with natural features such as trees or wooden markers, rather than headstones. Coffins are made from biodegradable materials, and embalming is avoided to protect the surrounding ecosystem.

“These services allow families to create something meaningful, while also honouring the environment,” Mr Mew explains. “Every element – from the choice of materials to the location – is designed to reduce environmental impact and preserve natural spaces.”

While some families choose a simple graveside service, others combine traditional elements with more contemporary, personalised touches – including biodegradable floral tributes, natural shrouds, or memorial benches placed nearby.

The move towards greener funerals comes as part of a wider cultural shift in how people approach death and memorialisation. The 2025 SunLife Cost of Dying Report revealed that: 74% of funeral directors say they’ve seen noticeable changes in the services they organise; 31% of ashes are now scattered in gardens of remembrance or natural settings; and 7% of funerals now feature non­traditional attire such as colourful clothes, further reflecting a desire for more personalised, reflective services.

Apple cinnamon buns This afternoon treat is delicious served warm from the oven, using British apples and finished with an autumnal cinnamon spice, crunch of nuts and a luxurious caramel sauce.

Step 1 Place the flours, yeast and caster sugar in the bowl of your mixer, attach the dough hook and pour in the milk and half the water. Start to mix on a low speed.

Step 2 Once the dough starts to come together add the eggs and any additional water to make a smooth dough.

Step 3 Once the dough has formed, add the butter and continue to mix for around 4 minutes.

Step 4 When the butter is incorporated and the dough is smooth, remove from the mixer and place in a bowl, cover with cling film and leave to prove until doubled in size.

Ingredients (Serves 12) 250g strong bread flour 125g plain flour 25g caster sugar 7g sachet fast acting yeast 125ml milk 100ml warm water 1 medium egg 25g butter For the filling 60g butter, melted 15g ground cinnamon 75g soft light brown sugar 325g apples, peeled, cored and roughly chopped For the caramel 50g caster sugar 50ml double cream 25g chopped mixed nuts, toasted

Step 5 Remove from the bowl and place on a floured worktop, give the dough a couple of kneads to bring it together and shape into a rectangle.

Step 6 Use a rolling pin to roll the dough to a rectangle approximately 40cm x 20cm, spread the melted For editorial and advertising call 07939 005218

butter over the entire surface, then sprinkle over the sugar, cinnamon and chopped apples.

Step 7 Roll from the long edge making sure you get it as tight as possible, then cut using a sharp knife into 12 buns and place them on the lined baking tray. Cover with oiled cling film and leave in a warm place until doubled in size and the buns are all touching each other.

Step 8 For the caramel Place the sugar in a pan over a high heat and cook until the sugar starts to melt, swirl the pan gently and let the sugar cook until it goes golden brown. Stir in the cream and keep stirring until you have a smooth caramel – take care as the caramel will be hot.

Step 9 Once the buns have risen, place in a preheated oven at 180°C (160°C fan/gas mark 6) and cook for around 20 minutes until risen and golden. Remove from the oven and immediately spoon the caramel over each one and then sprinkle over the nuts.

An Independent Visitor (IV) is a volunteer who befriends and supports a child or young person in care, meeting with them once a month for a few hours to do something fun together. It might be going for a walk, kicking a football around, visiting a local café, trying a new hobby, or simply having a chat. What matters most isn’t the activity — it’s the relationship.

Many young people tell us that their IV is the only adult in their life who is there because they want

to be, not because it’s part of a job. That sense of unconditional reliability can help rebuild trust, confidence, and hope for the future.

Volunteers come from all walks of life — teachers, retirees, students, professionals, parents, people with no previous experience of working with young people, and people who simply want to give something back to their community. What they all have in common is a commitment to showing up, listening, and helping create moments that make a young person feel valued.

What you do need is patience, empathy, and the willingness to share a few hours of your time once a month. We provide full training, ongoing support, and guidance throughout your volunteering journey. You’ll never be alone in the process — our team is here to make sure both you and the young person feel safe, confident, and supported.

Being an IV isn’t just rewarding for the young person. Volunteers tell us it changes their own lives too. It can give you a renewed sense of purpose, the joy of seeing a young person grow, and the privilege of being part of someone’s story in a truly meaningful way.

There is a real and growing need for volunteers.

Caddington Youth Football Club is excited to announce ‘Football for Everyone’with a new, Summer Football Training Camp during May 2026 (Sunday mornings).

The objective is that Football for Everyone provides opportunities for all children with Special Educational Needs (SEN) or other disabilities to enjoy and play football within a safe, inclusive and supportive environment.

The programme is focused on helping children aged 5 to 11 years have fun, while building confidence, independence and social relationships.

Caddington Youth Football Camp will be run by its experienced coaches focusing on having fun and enjoying the beautiful game, development, coordination, teamwork and football skills.
