CONTACTS
Dear Readers, I include a photo of snowdrops on this page as a symbol of the need for spring. What a cold, wet, muddy, frosty and snowy winter it has been. I gave up horse riding a couple of years ago but missed the whole lifestyle of looking a er and riding so a er a short loan of a very nice mare, I couldn’t resist ge ng back into it. Horses are like drugs; it’s hard to kick the habit! But looking a er them everyday in all weathers makes you very much in tune to the outside condi ons and the BBC weather app is the one most in use on my phone. Aquaplaning across the fields and pulling my boots through ankle deep mud is ge ng to be very trying so bringon the bulbs and the spring sunshine.

It has been a quiet me for ac vi es around the villages but there are always one or two highlights. The Markyate Panto was a lot of fun and colour to take our minds off the gloom. It was a great example of how the genera ons are bridged in this village, with all pulling together to make an excellent produc on. See the full report on page 22.

Our adver sement sales manager, Janet Brown bought a Christmas present of a trip round Tring brewery for a friend. A foursome enjoyed finding out about the brewing business, the history of Tring brewery and of course, sampling the beers. More on that on page 30 Did you watch the Channel 4 programme, Village of the Year with Penelope Keith? Filmed last summer, Redbourn was featured as one of the villages vying for a place in the semifinals. I was at the Fête du Vélo in July when they were filming for the series and the anxious wait to see the programme aired was over in January. It was a close contest between four villages and Redbourn came close but was runnerup for a place in the semifinals..Full report on page 40.

A fly pper is convicted and punished by Central Beds Council Readers will be pleased to hear that a fly pper has been caught, tried, convicted and punished for the rural crime of fly pping; the scourge of our countryside. A local man had his vehicle completely destroyed by a crushing machine. The white flatbed truck which was used to fly p was ordered to be crushed following a court ruling that found in favour of the Local Council.
Councillor Budge Wells, Deputy Execu ve Member for Community Services at Central Bedfordshire Council, said: “Our teams are determined to crack down on the an social minority who destroy our neighbourhoods with illegally dumped waste. This ac on demonstrates that we will use all the powers at our disposal to punish those responsible.
On 12th December 2017, Luton Magistrates’ Court heard how a Hemel Hempstead man’s flatbed truck was observed by a concerned member of the public, pping rubbish onto Millfield Lane in Caddington as it was driving along. The vehicle registra on number was reported to Central Bedfordshire Council which contacted the DVLA to verify the registered owner of the vehicle.
“This is a sa sfying result, and serves as an example of how seriously we take fly pping. It is leaving a blight on our communi es, and is cos ng taxpayers. The money it costs us to dispose of the fly pped waste could be used for vital services elsewhere in the community.”
The court ordered that it be confiscated and crushed by the council as punishment for his crime. The owner was also fined £3,990.
Residents can help reduce fly pping crime by repor ng any incidents to the council’s customer services team on 0300 300 8302 or by email at customers@centralbedfordshire.gov.uk.

What you would have expected to be a simple result became very complicated so who did actually get the most likes? Whatever the true answer, there were many amazing photos taken, adding a magic to the run up to Christmas. Here is the photo of a snowcovered St John’s Church, Markyate, framed and presented to Father Tom by amateur photographer Jim McGuckin. The Old Chequers in Gaddesden Row closes its doors
I am sad to report that the old Chequers has closed. It was up for sale but now it has ceased trading. Two years ago, it was heaving which goes to show how quickly things can change in the pub business. Let’s hope someone takes it on as it is a stunning 17th Century, grade II listed building with a modern design inside and a good atmosphere. Or will it be turned into a house/flats?
Bogus HMRC telephone calls targetting the elderly The Trading Standards team are warning residents to be on their guard, following an increase in the number of reports involving elderly residents receiving calls from ‘bogus’ callers claiming to be from the HMRC. The callers appear to be specifically targe ng elderly and vulnerable residents and claim that the HMRC are taking court ac on against them due to a large amount of unpaid tax. They will then request immediate payment to prevent further ac on, usually instruc ng the resident to pay using digital vouchers or gi cards, such as iTunes vouchers. Vic ms are told to buy a large financial amount of the vouchers from local shops and provide the caller with the ‘scratch off’ redemp on codes. There are some reports of the callers also encouraging some residents to provide or confirm their personal and financial informa on in order to qualify for a ‘bogus’ tax reduc on or refund.

Bogus bailiffs chasing "phantom" debts There has also been an increase in the number of calls to members of the public from bogus bailiffs demanding payments for a “phantom” debt. The fraud involves being coldcalled by someone purpor ng to be a bailiff working on behalf of a court, a emp ng to recover funds for a nonexistent debt. The caller will request immediate payment by means of bank transfer and if this is refused, will threaten to visit the premises to recover the debt that is owed. A er consul ng with residents, the Central Beds Council accepts a lower overall increase in Council Tax of 4.5% instead of the proposed 6%. More people took part in the budget consulta on than ever before and whilst the majority of respondents supported an increase of 3% to fund care services for vulnerable adults, views on addi onal council tax increases for other services were more mixed.
If you are on Twi er you can follow @CBC_Highways for news of the latest road closures.
Councillor Richard Wenham, Deputy Leader and Execu ve Member for Corporate Resources, said: "We have listened to what the public have told us through the consulta on on our savings plans and council tax op ons. It’s clear that the majority of people are prepared to pay more for vital care services, but fewer people supported the addi onal 3% Council Tax op on than were opposing it. We need to recognise that people are facing real pressures, par cularly those on fixed incomes, and we must respond to that.”

All about Markyate’s New Coffee Shop
Sara and David Pe engell first had the idea for Dug’s Mugs in February of 2017. Sara explains how the idea for coffee shop came about: David was ren ng the space from the landlord for his classic cars and a er spending some me in the unit, we thought what a great loca on and space it would make for a coffee shop. We had lived in the USA for a few years un l the middle of 2016 and we already had the coffee bug, so we decided to look into what it would take to make a coffee shop. A er six months of planning proposals, looking into the coffee shop business, going on barista courses and coffee shop business courses, speaking to various people who had already done it and researching all the details, our dream became a reality. From full planning consent being granted at the beginning of September to the launch date of Dug’s Mugs took just seven weeks. We had designed and planned everything thoroughly whilst we were wai ng for consent, so the build and set up went rela vely smoothly. At the me of wri ng we are about to go into our 10th week of opening and it is going well. There are lots of things to change and learn, marke ng plans to ac on and we hope to encourage more groups (walking, cycling, reading etc) to dropin on a regular basis. We have two full me staff and two part me staff plus ourselves and we hope to hire another part me member of staff in the next month or two, for casual cover at weekends and school holidays. Who knows what the future holds? All we really want is for Dugs Mugs to be a place where people want to go to spend me with their friends and family; for professionals who are working from home to come and take a break and have great coffee (or tea or hot chocolate) and feel comfortable. We are in it for the long haul and are commi ed to making it work for us and the people of Markyate and the surrounding villages.

Hello LADIES – you could become an oncall firefighter for your village
Are you a full me mum? Do you work in your village? Are you looking for something more? Her ordshire County Council’s Fire and Rescue Service is looking to train people as part me firefighters to help ensure that a full crew is on standby near your village sta on at all mes. These part me firefighters are on call so that they can respond to emergencies alongside their normal jobs. Our oncall firefighters do a range of day jobs. They are plumbers, florists, financial advisors, caretakers, and IT consultants. What they have in common is that they’re ready to drop everything and pull on their firefigh ng kit when their community needs them. Gemma Fraser is a warehouse manager and oncall firefighter from Markyate. “I didn’t realise there was such a thing as an oncall firefighter un l I met someone that works at the sta on,” said Gemma. Gemma was inspired by her grandfather, who was a firefighter. Gemma adds that she feels she is making a valuable contribu on to her community. “It’s important that oncall sta ons have a full crew ready to respond as emergency calls can come in day or night. “This early arrival could be the difference between life and death for someone, so those communi es need local people to join so they can make a difference.” If this sounds like something you think you could do, we want you to apply – regardless of your age or gender. Oncall firefighters need to live or work within four minutes of a fire sta on and be on standby to a end emergency incidents. In return we offer full training and a basic annual retainer as well as payments for callouts to incidents. They are required to a end the sta on for training with colleagues for three hours one evening per week for which they will also be paid. CinderFella The Markyate Pantomime wows the residents leaving us asking lots of ques ons... Words and photos supplied by Ian Bradley
Full cast of Cinderfella taken from the' Lovely People's' seats
Amateur Pantomime has been the bu of jokes for ever, but not so the MADS (Markyate Amateur Drama c Society) produc on of CinderFella. This produc on was a completely new and hilarious take on the tradi onal tale. With a modernday twist, it was wri en in Markyate by a new to scrip ng and direc ng team of two exprops girls and an Ugly Sister. Performed by a competent cast, Bu ons shed her plaster cast just in me for the first night. The age range for the actors went from 6yearold CinderFella’s adorable daughter up to granddads and grandmas, including her own. She played a very mischievous mouse who threatened to upstage her dad and granddad too! Members of the audience might have wondered “where did ‘Props’ find that pair of size 13 leopard print ki en heels for the Prime Minister or the equally large Glass Boots for Cinderfella? I mustn’t forget to men on the ar s c licence of the ‘twofoot man’, slo ed in the place of the two foot men of the conven onal story. Did the footman really perform on a toy trumpet to rival the greats of the jazz era? I think he was close. Where did the Fairy Godfather recruit such a band of menacing hoods to fix it for Cinders to go to the Ball? A clever twist with modern day appeal. All of this transformed St John’s Church into a vibrant theatre with a stage over the choir stalls and a proscenium behind the pulpit. And as if by magic, at the end of the pantomime, it was returned to normal in me for evensong on Sunday. If you didn’t see this pantomime you missed a major treat. Another one will emerge next year keep your eyes open for clues in this magazine or MADS website. h ps://18websitemads.wixsite.com/mads/gallery Remember gold sells for £1,000 an ounce … and ckets for the MADS pantomime are more valuable than that so book early.

Glass boots. Photo Ian Bradley
Editor’s review This was our first me to the Markyate pantomime and we a ended the children’s night, Thursday. We sat at the back in the pews labelled ‘Lovely People’ and the youngsters spread out in front of us. Throughout the show, their excitement produced a cacophony of screams, roars, boos, giggles and ‘don’t eat the custards’. Li le heads bobbing up and Adam Lewis as Cinderfella. Photo Ian Bradley down, lots of laughs and shuffling in seats made them ready and energised to take on the ugly sisters and their conniving step mother with relentless vigour. Top marks to all the actors; young, adolescents, middleaged and middle aged plus, who entertained for two hours with sharp wit, impressive dance Princess Sophia played by Katherine Robertson. Photo Claire Woods rou nes, contemporary songs and the mandatory custard pie. The clever gender twist of CinderFella did make me wonder how the acid test could be executed. When Cinders was a man and the young royal, searching for the male who fi ed the glass slipper (boot in this case) was a princess instead of a prince, how could the roles of the ugly sisters be performed? Simple. The ambi ous step mother, desirous of ge ng her hands on the wealth of the palace, ordered the ugly sisters to dress as men to get the chance to marry the princess. We all know the ending; they failed and CinderFella triumphed as the glass boot fi ed and the young lovers were reunited and everyone lived happily ever a er. It was an inven ve script and the costumes, props were outstanding for colour and ingenuity. MADS gets a round of applause for this one. Roll on next year!

In brief From its source at Kensworth Lynch in the foothills of the Chilterns, the chalk stream of the River Ver when in full flow meanders south along its valley for around 24km through Markyate, Flamstead, Redbourn, St Albans, Park Street and Bricket Wood where it meets the River Colne. With a foreword by the renowned television presenter and wildlife photographer Chris Packham, the book tells of the Ver’s long and interes ng history, including geology and archaeology, milling and watercress growing. There are wonderful personal memories and experiences of people who have lived, worked and played on or near the river, helping to bring the past to us here in the present, complemented with over 300 photographs, images and maps, and some going back more than 250 years. Property Coming up in 2018 around Herts Beds & Bucks
by Alasdair Gravestock du Melville, owner of Hawk & Chadwick Estates Ltd
Keeping up to date with the latest changes in the property world can be a mindboggling task, but luckily Hawk & Chadwick are here to help! Here’s a roundup of what to look out for in the coming months. Many Drafty Returns
Landlords need to be particularly wary this year as new legislation is starting to bite. Firstly, under the Energy Efficiency Regulations 2015, if you are renting or planning on renting a property which holds an EPC rating below an ‘E’, you will need to get your skates on and make improvements before the 1st April 2018 to avoid fines and enforcement notices from the local authority. You can check the EPC for any property using the properties postcode at www.epcregister. com. If you need an EPC and do not currently have one, don’t panic – it is a legal requirement if you’re
selling or renting and a new EPC can be drawn up by a professional Domestic Energy Assessor for under £85.00 – we recommend Doug Lacey at Beds & Herts EPCs.
Landlord Tax Impacts
Secondly, again biting at landlords heels, is Section 24 of the Finance Act. Introduced by George Osborne back in 2015, this highly controversial piece of legislation removes the mechanism for landlord’s to claim tax relief on their mortgage and finance payments. This will mean that, from a profit perspective, holding a large portfolio may no longer be profitable, particularly for higher rate taxpayers. Some have suggested migrating portfolios into limited companies and switching to commercial financing or limited company loans, but some senior tax advisers have warned that HMRC will nip this in the bud. The scheme is being rolled in over four years with the first tranche taking place from April this year. For tax advice on your portfolio, we refer you to Melody O’Donnell at MRO Accounts in Hemel Hempstead.
Fee ban for Agents
It could try your patience. Lastly, you may have heard that parliament has produced a draft bill to ban letting agents from charging fees to tenants when they apply to rent a property. The word on the street is that agents will see a cashflow issue if this bill passes, and many will increase their fees to Landlords, which in turn may increase rental values. It’s all speculation, but one thing is for certain – agents will be laying the foundations now when it comes to shoring up the losses that will be made from the ban, and its likely that additional charges will be suggested. To get ahead of the game, ask your managing agents if they’re going to be charging you more once the fee ban comes in. If your letting agency hasn’t told you about these changes, perhaps you should consider switching managing agents! Hawk & Chadwick will gladly re-value your portfolio and handle the switch from your current agent. Discounts available for multiple properties. A Tour Around Tring Brewery? Why not? Tipples, galore….. Report & photos by Janet Brown
On the morning of Saturday January 27th, I had booked a tour of Tring Brewery Co. for myself, my husband Phillip and his friends Brent and Diane. Many other real ale enthusiasts were also on the tour. We arrived in time to check-in and try some tasters of the beers before the tour began at 11am. The tour started with a ‘brief’ from the brewer & tour guide Sam Reed, who explained the history and science behind the brewing process. Having grown in size since its inception in 1992, Out of 2,000 breweries this size in the UK, Tring is placed 128th, which puts it in the top 10% of breweries nation wide. The business employs a close-knit team of around 10 local staff members, with a foothold of strong ties with pubs in the Home Counties. Sam explained that a perhaps overlooked aspect, but one of the most challenging of the

The Saturday tour is one of two formats. ‘Mash Up’ tours, are held every other Thursday evening; it has a stronger social focus, and includes fish and chips supper and open tap beer – both formats include an extensive and informative tour of the brewhouse. The brewery shop is open Monday to Saturday. It is a great place to visit to pick up your local, quality beers.

Cheap Car Parts
Good Value or an accident waiting to happen? By Melanie Wooding Jones Redbourn Auto Solutions, caring for you and your car It may surprise you to know that not only is the automotive industry unregulated, but the same also applies to the supply of car parts. Currently, there are no automotive parts standards or certification. Anyone could set up as a specialist and sell parts, inadequate or not, for your vehicle. You couldn’t do this in either the aerospace or locomotive industries; so why is the automotive industry so different? How do you know what you are buying and that your garage/mechanic is supplying reputable parts?
Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM). These parts will be identical to OE parts, but they come in a box with the name of the part manufacturer on them (Bosch etc.) rather than the car manufacturer (eg, Ford, etc). They negotiate to be able to sell their products independently as part of their contract. They are likely to be cheaper than OE parts, and can be used without invalidating the car’s warranty. These are the exact same part, but are much better value.
Surely all parts are the same? It would be a common misconception that when you are comparing costs of servicing or repair it is on a like for like basis. But not only do garages use different terminology, but their parts vary considerably in quality. Many won’t actually tell you what they are fitting, but it would be naive to assume they are fitting a quality part. Here we try to demystify the terminology to enable you to make informed decisions to take place on what you would like fitted to your car.
Aftermarket/Pattern Parts
Genuine or Original Equipment (OE) Parts
Contrary to popular belief, car manufacturers don’t make parts! They manufacture cars; they mostly assemble car parts which are bought from car part manufacturers. Genuine or OE parts are exactly the same as those fitted to the vehicle on the production line. They will be an exact fit and come with the manufacturer’s guarantee. Genuine parts will maintain the manufacturer’s warranty, but they are generally the most expensive.
Replacement or OEM – Original Equipment Manufacturers
Car part manufacturers (eg, Bosch, Hella, ZF, etc) supply parts directly to car manufacturers (e.g. Ford, VW, etc.) These companies are referred to as
To adverse call 01582 965760
Redbourn autos.indd 34
These parts are copied or re-engineered based on the original. Aftermarket companies purchase the rights to manufacture the part using the template (pattern) from the original manufacturer. It would be wrong to assume all aftermarket parts are of an inferior quality. Some quality manufacturers analyse why OEM parts fail and improve the design. However, some are poorly made and a garage may have to adapt them to fit your car. The parts may be made from substandard materials and prone to wearing out quickly. At its extreme, they could be dangerous. Look out for an ISO (International Organisation for Standardisation) certification. Costs can vary, although they are likely to be cheaper than OE or OEM parts. Assuming you have a good quality part, these can be ideal for older cars.
Remanufactured parts
Engines and gearboxs are made from multiple components, when one component fails it is possible to strip down the unit and replace the broken part with a new one. Rebuilding it and testing ensures that they are nearly as good as new. This is a very cost-effective way of maintaining an older car and some remanufactured parts come with a guarantee.

35 33 Reconditioned parts
Like remanufactured parts, this applies to units with multiple components. Once stripped down, failed parts are replaced with used parts (although bolts and fasteners may be new). This is far cheaper than replacing a unit with a new part, but it is impossible to know how long they will last and like remanufactured parts, may expose weaknesses in other areas.
Salvaged/Recycled parts
There are no guarantees here! These parts have usually been salvaged from scrapped cars. Most scrap yards keep their cars outside and open to the elements, so you don’t know how well they have been stored or how delicately they’ve been removed. There are very few circumstances where this would be recommended; although for some classic cars, this may be the only answer.
Internet
The internet is littered with auction sites encouraging you to ‘save money, buy cheap’. If you really know what you are looking for, and are prepared to take a risk, then perhaps this is the right method for you. However, in reality very few of us have this knowledge or the understanding of the car market, rendering us an unsuspecting prime target. Our advice is to steer clear, or be prepared to pay twice for the rectification work!
Warranty
Main dealers like to give the impression that you must use a genuine part or you will invalidate your warranty. This is simply not the case. Likewise, you cannot invalidate your warranty by having maintenance or repairs carried out somewhere other than the dealership. It’s a myth that keep many within the main dealer network.

Redbourn autos.indd 35
Conclusion
Not all parts are the same and they vary considerably in quality affecting their performance and longevity. For example, cheap brakes are made from a different compound, glue and coating, which can substantially increase stopping distances. Some suppliers of parts prioritise rigorous quality and testing, other suppliers may be more concerned with producing volume as cheaply as possible. Main dealers want you to stay in their network and independents compete fiercely on price, all using different parts of differing qualities. Your car is unique to you – old family favourite, a new car, one of a fleet or your only means for getting around. All of these impact on your buying choices. Choose wisely. Would you consider an aftermarket part if it is safety critical or positioned in and around a crucial engine bay? Independents vary on quality so it is worth asking which parts are recommended, ensuring you are satisfied they are the right choice for you. Don’t assume all garages will fit the same part and bare this in mind with price comparisons. Always ask yourself whether you are prepared to compromise quality and safety for cost. Or take your car to someone you trust will fit quality first time, every time.

Appletrees Nursery give Valen ne’s Cards at St Ma hews 13th February Words and photos by Sue Mitchell
Appletrees Nursery of Flamstead have a new ini a ve for 2018; the team is planning to perform four group acts of kindness in the community. The first of these was to visit St Ma hews Care Home in Redbourn to give Valen ne’s cards that the children had made themselves, and gi s of chocolates and biscuits to the senior residents. The children, who are aged 34 years, followed the gi giving with a repertoire of songs which they sang with enthusiasm and energy, especially the favourite Baa Baa Black Sheep which they performed twice. “I was speaking to Janet Crawley of St Ma hews and we came up with the idea to bring the li le ones and the seniors together,” said Samantha, proprietor of Appletrees. “We want to teach the children to appreciate the older genera ons and be thankful for all the hard work they have done in their lives to make the world a be er place for us all today,” said Sam. “Valen ne’s Day was the perfect day to carry out our first ‘kindness’ day,” she added. We have reported in an earlier issue of MiMagazine about St Ma hews’ aim to bridge the genera ons gap and help the elderly and the very young enjoy each other’s company and experience joy and comfort on both sides. St Ma hews call it ‘The Age No Limit Club’.

CHANNEL 4’s VILLAGE OF THE YEAR COMPETITION Words by Lindy Fox - The Hub & The Bike Loft High Street, Redbourn Photos from the TV programme
Congratulations to Redbourn for being chosen from many applicants as a suitable entrant for the South East zone of the Village of the Year Competition, hosted by Penelope Keith. It was filmed last summer and televised recently. Redbourn is situated on the old Roman Watling Street and was settled originally in early Saxon times. Our historic village, was recorded in the Doomsday Book, compiled in 1086, by order of William the Conqueror. In later times, it was known as the Street of Inns as there were 25 coaching Inns in the High Street. Our village was accepted into the competition because of its many special features, one of which is the Cricket Ground situated on the huge and beautiful Common. It is one of the longest established cricket pitches in the country dating back to 1666. Viewers saw one of the judges, Juliet Sargeant who is a Chelsea Flower Show Gold Medallist (Garden Design), interview the groundsman, who allowed her to drive the machinery! W G Grace, who is considered by many to be one of England’s finest cricketers and captain of England at the turn of the century played here and yes, he did bowl a maiden over or two! Redbourn Common sees many a family picnic, football game and every summer it hosts a fabulous cycling festival called the “Fête du Vélo”. This event will be celebrated again on 1st July this year. Simon Barnes of The Bike Loft, who organises the event, cycled around the course with Juliet and explained how the event is run, from little toddlers on their scooters to competitive British cycling veterans - and everyone in between! Families turn out to watch and enjoy the cycling, listen to the live musical entertainment, have delicious foods and drinks, and share the day with their friends and families in what is a lovely village day. Redbournbury Watermill was also of great interest to the judges; it’s the last working mill on the River Ver where once there were 13 and it has been a mill site for over 1,000 years. Justin, the owner of the mill, explained that the wheat crop is grown in the field nearby, then milled into

stoneground organic flours and baked on the premises into Artisan bread. There is an extensive team of dedicated volunteers who help deliver the bread to various markets and shops, such as The Hub in the High Street. The Hub Coffee Bar also stocks the mill flapjacks, granola and other delicious items.

The Reverend Will Gibbs called Redbourn a “very special place” and informed the viewers that the Common was gifted by the Earl of Verulam and cannot ever be built upon. Will presides over the parish from the church of St. Mary’s. This church was built in the early 12th century, only 50 years after a small priory was founded on Redbourn Common to mark the conversion of St Alban by St Amphibalus. In 2010, St Mary’s Church celebrated its 900th anniversary. Quite a remarkable time to be in service to the community!

Do you love the old photos of our villages? A ‘Must Have’ chronicle of photographs by Edward Mo for all local villagers, published in 2017 by Richard Hogg Markyate man, Edward Mo made an invaluable contribu on to local history by taking photos of the surrounding villages at the end of the 19th century, early 20th century. Many were made into picture postcards which he sold in their shop which was 41 and 43 High Street. The publisher of this fabulous book, Richard Hogg born in 1949, spent his early life in Markyate. He is a founder member of the Markyate History Society and was the chairman for aÂnumberÂofÂyears. Richard is now re red and lives in Stopsley with his wife. The book includes historical notes and a collec on of photos taken by Edward Mo in Markyate, Flamstead, Caddington, Dunstable Road, Kensworth, Gaddesden Row, The Common and Shelford where Edward went to live in for some me, before returning to Markyate to run the shop once his father died. Some of these photos have appeared on local social media recently, posted by Paul Drew of Town & Country and this prompted me to enquire about publishing them in MiMagazine. It is a beau ful book and is for sale in Town & Country for just ÂŁ10. The proďŹ ts go to charity so if you love the photos and you are interested in our local history, you must get a copy. What a fab Christmas or birthday gi it would make. In this issue we feature the local pubs ‌ but there will be more next me.

Legal Ma ers Made Simple 2018 – A NEW YEAR, NEW RESOLUTIONS, NEW LAWS Employment Lawyers had much to get excited about in 2017 and 2018 looks to be lively too …
Con nuing our series, Mark Fellows, Partner and Head of Employment at Sherrards LLP, discusses the imminent changes in employment law for 2018, and how they will affect employers and employees. Read on to find out more … We employment lawyers had plenty of reasons to become animated during 2017, with the cancella on of Employment Tribunal fees, the constant debate about whether an individual is an employee, a worker or selfemployed and la erly the influx of allega ons of sexual harassment in the workplace which, for some public figures, was a very touchy subject (pun intended). Surely 2018 cannot compete? Well, there are a number of an cipated developments throughout 2018 to keep us all on our toes, which will affect you personally, or will have an impact on your business if you are a business owner: • Employment status – this topic will con nue to run as a number of appeal cases rela ng to employment status are due to be heard in 2018. In par cular, Uber’s well publicised appeal will be heard at the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court will consider a leading case (referred to as the Pimlico Plumbers case) in February 2018. As you may be aware, these cases were brought by individuals who claimed they were ‘workers’ rather than ‘selfemployed’, in order to benefit from certain en tlements, such as holiday pay. • Gender pay gap – for qualifying private companies, the deadline for publishing their gender pay report is 4th April 2018. Although some highprofile organisa ons have published already, we have certainly not heard the last of this, nor is the fallout from the findings over. To adver se call 01582 965760
Carrie Gracie’s resigna on from her post as China editor at the BBC is just the beginning for 2018. • Termina on payments – on 6th April 2018, new legisla on will bring about changes to the way in which these payments are taxed that will affect in par cular termina on payments incorporated within a Se lement Agreement. One of the key changes is that there will no longer be a debate about the extent to which a payment in lieu of no ce can legi mately avoid any tax or na onal insurance. From 6th April, any payment in lieu of no ce will always be subject to tax and na onal insurance deduc ons. • Statutory payments we will have the usual statutory payment increases in April 2018 which will include an increase from £140.98 to £145.18 in respect of statutory adop on, maternity, paternity and shared parental leave pay and an increase from £89.35 to £92.15 for statutory sick pay. • GDPR – the General Data Protec on Regula ons will come into effect on 25th May 2018. Whilst the implica ons are wide reaching for most businesses, we are par cularly concerned about the impact on employee data, and the need for consent to process that informa on. Data protec on is one of the most talked about issues as we go into the New Year. • Mental health in the workplace – there have been increasing amounts of press surrounding the promo on of posi ve mental health in the workplace and the onus is on employers to take steps to protect its workers. ACAS suggest that mental illness costs employers in the UK around £30 billion per year in lost produc vity, absence and recruitment costs. March Apr March A ril 2018 Arries Ari es - Mar March 2121 Apri April 19 19
For a good part of the months, your focus is going g to be around groups or organizations you belong to. New chapters are beginning in regards to your connections with others. But on a deep level – a new development could be in the making for you in regards to a long term hopes s and dreams.
Tauru rus - Apr pril 20 20 - Ma May 20 20
The months ahead are an opportune moment for you to be seen and heard on many levels. All eyes are going to be on you and I want you to be excited about it. The universe is saying that your moment has arrived to strut your stuffff and show off all your hidden talents.
Gemi mini - Ma May 21- J un une 20 20
One of the benefits of fostering a child for Central Bedfordshire Council is that they know and place their children. There is no middle agency to deal with. Foster care support includes: • regular supervision and support from an allocated social worker • support from clinicians based within the service • learning and development opportunities with a comprehensive training programme throughout your assessment and following your approval • a fostering allowance for the child, plus a fee for you • support for your birth children including training and activities • regular fostering social events including support groups • paid membership to an independent fostering charity who can provide support and guidance for you and your family • out of office hours telephone support which is manned by members of the fostering team and support from our Emergency Duty Team • getting support from a fostering network, such as mentors who are experienced foster carers • full detailed background information about children placed with you • opportunities to meet regularly with senior managers to help influence policies, procedures and practice • respect for you as an important member of the team supporting the child • involving you in policies and procedures and keeping you fully informed of any changes
Fees and allowances for foster carers
As a foster carer you will receive an allowance for each child and a fee for you. If you care for children with complex and challenging needs you could receive up to £796 per week. Interested? With the Sun travelling through your 9th house e (the realm of long-distance travel, learning or teaching, religion, spiritual matters, atters, foreigners and the law) an important trip may be in the works. It’s also possible that your ‘travels’ in the month ahead take you places that you’ve never visited sited before.
Cance cer - J une ne 21 21 - J uly ly 22 22
A new development l or discovery di into something g you own with another could come about in the weeks ahead. Things yo ou own with someone else, inheritance issues, taxes, help you get from otherr people and matters revolving around the intimacy department are all under specu culation.
Leo - J ul uly 23 23 - Aug ugus ust22 22
There is just no denying that your March is going g to be all about relationships! Very important turning points are continuing to play part of this eventful time of your life. You You are just coming off the intensity of a Super Moon Eclipse in your sign that created important endings. Now a new beginning is in sight.
Virg rgo - Aug ugust23 23 - Sep eptemb mber 22 22
Busy is a key word that comes to mind when I thin nk of what’s manifesting in the background for you Virgo. There is no doubt yo ou could feel overloaded with work or all that has to be done—because of all that hat is happening around. But if anyone can push up their sleeves and create s some order to the chaos it is certainly you! A new development at the beginning g of March in on the books
Libra ra - Sept ptember 23- Octo tober 22
The month ahead is going to put a lot of attention n on one of the best zones of our astrology – the 5th house. Get ready to live & laugh and love all that March has to offerr.. New beginnings are in motion and an important push for your future is happening.
Scorp rpio - Oct ctobe ber 23 23 - No Novemb mber er 21
Get ready, Scorpio, for a big month! The plan netary energies out there are driving you to “do” big things in the weeks ahea ad. Keep in mind that you are still sailing through your new 12 year cycle. Add ditional developments need to start taking root for the cycle to fully unfold. I fore esee some amazing success in your endeavours.
Sag agitt ttaarrius us - No Nove vemb mber 22 22 - Dece cembe ber 21 21
With Mars now travelling through your sign you are revved up for action and I have no doubt that you are ready for action too! H However, as your month kicks off ff I don’t d ’t think thi k you’re ’ going i t wantt to to t be b too t s i serious about b t things. thi U Use the first few days of March to rest before the storm ah head!
Cap apri rico corn rn - Dec ecem ember er 22 22 - J anua uary ry 19
Capricorn there is no doubt that you need an astrologica rological breather! The energy of February was intense on so many levels and you y probably had a hard time keeping up with all of it. Thankfully, now, the planet lanets are moving away from your sign and relief is in motion. Hallelujah! The even better news is that a more relaxed and peaceful time is ahead.
Aqua uari rius us - J anua uary ry 20- Feb ebru ruary 18 18
The month ahead puts your sign in the spotlight in n more ways than one. It kicks off with the goddess of love & beauty, Venus, in n your sign, accentuating not only how you feel but how you look. There is a new you in the making and you’re getting ready to show the world the new yo ou.
Pis isces es - Febr bruary ry 19- Ma Marc rch 20 20
The beginning of March is going to be a time wh here you’ll need to retreat and operate behind the scenes. With the Sun travelling ng through the hidden zone of your astrology you will need to operate on a morre inward level despite the big shifts that are happening all around you.
