Classic day out for all the family In the UK, more than 300,000 historic classic cars (aged 40­plus years) are said to be officially registered, with roughly 70 per cent taxed and driven on the road. While ‘high­end exotics’ are naturally rare, the true rarity among classic cars increasingly belongs to once­common 1970s, 80s, and 90s everyday hatchbacks and saloons.

Cars that previously numbered in the thousands have dwindled. For example, it is believed there are barely 150 Austin Maestros licensed in the UK today, while some models, such as a 1982 Renault Fuego GTS, can become true ‘unicorn’ cars with only a single surviving example on the road, according to classic car insurance specialists Footman James.

Another rarity is the Aston Martin Two Litre Sports, a landmark British sports car retrospectively known as the DB1. Only 15 of the open­top 1948 roadster were ever built, and as of 2022, only one was licensed and on the road in the UK. It is unlikely we will see it at this year’s Redbourn Classics Motor Show, but you will still be able to enjoy around 350 classic vehicles, including cars, tractors, vans, small trucks and motorbikes.

Now in its ninth year, the show will be held on Redbourn Common on Saturday, September 5, from noon to 5pm.

Live music will once again be provided by The Barn­Ettes and Missing The Ferry, and the fun­filled day for all the family will include miniature train rides, village fete, children’s funfair, a licensed bar and street food.

The 2025 Redbourn Classics Show raised more £18,000, which was given to Redbourn Community Group, Friends of St Mary’s Church, the Village Hall and many other village groups. Since 2017 the show has raised more than £128,000 for Redbourn charities.

The 22nd Flamstead Scarecrow Festival will be held on August 21, 22 and 23. The annual festival has been running since 2002 and regularly attracts huge crowds to the Hertfordshire village. Each year, residents create fabulous scarecrows and display them in their front gardens or around the village, with a competition to see who can make the best scarecrow. The sun was shining on the Kensworth Summer Fun Day on Saturday July 4 with lots of activities, food, stalls, live music and a dog show.

This all led to a “lovely afternoon”, said local MP Rachel Hopkins who popped in on the day, adding: “Well done to all the volunteer team who worked really hard to pull everything together. Thanks also to Sylvia, secretary of Kensworth Village Hall, for her continued efforts keeping such a great little hub going.”

Busy time for Studham Methodist Chapel...

By Chrys Smith tudham Methodist Chapel is going to have one of its busiest Septembers ever. But before telling you what is happening, let’s go back in time.

The original chapel was officially opened for worship on June 25, 1861, by Charles Richardson, a famous Wesleyan evangelist known as the ‘Lincolnshire Thresher’.

Heating was from a Franklyn stove, situated in the small room on the left of the picture. This room also doubled a Sunday School classroom.

There were no kitchen facilities, (and no other

S

facilities come to that!), so it was decided to raise money for a new building. With all sorts of fund­ raising efforts, from jumble sales, concerts, piano and singing lessons (6d a time I recall – that’s 2.5p!), the funds were eventually raised (although we were still £900 short when the stone laying took place on October 9, 1965).

The new building was dedicated on March 12, 1966, and is pictured right. Fully equipped kitchen,

classroom and Vestry that can combine to a larger space, and two loos!

In September 2025, Studham joined with Gaddesden Row and Flamstead to become The Villages Methodist Church. One church, with one building in each village, all very different and all with their own histories, but combined in worship, learning, caring, service and evangelism.

This isn’t the first time we have all worked together. When we were part of the old Harpenden Methodist Circuit, we were known as ‘The West Side Churches’, but then that also included Markyate.

Which brings us to the busy September... Our building has had its 60th Birthday this year.

So to celebrate this Diamond Jubilee, we are hosting the Autumn Circuit Meeting, being a venue for the Hike and Bike for Historic Churches – and the culmination of all this celebrating will be a combined Birthday and Harvest Festival Service on Sunday September 27 at 3pm.

All are welcome to come and join in this wonderful celebration. There will of course be a Birthday Tea after the service.

We can seat 100, so let’s see if we can give our Chapel the Diamond Celebration it deserves.

Why do I need a Lasting Power of Attorney?

I

f you lose mental capacity through illness (for example a stroke, dementia, or Alzheimer’s disease), or an accident, and haven’t created a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA): • You will no longer be able to choose who makes decisions and act for you (such as your spouse and children). You can only make your LPA while you still have mental capacity.

If you still have mental capacity, LPAs are a simple, inexpensive, and legally robust way of giving someone you trust the power to make decisions and act for you – either temporarily or long term should you lose capacity in the future.

To plan for this, you must create an LPA now whilst you still have mental capacity and so make things much easier for other people in your life.

• A stranger appointed by the court such as a solicitor would end up making crucial decisions about you and your assets – where you will live, whether to accept medical treatment to keep you alive, what you eat and wear, and will control all your finances and your property.

• Your spouse, children or friends would have to apply to court to get permission to make decisions on your behalf and act for you – which is far more expensive and time­consuming than making an LPA and the court could refuse the application.

Keeping gardens looking their best

into autumn

B

y late summer, many gardens have already had their biggest burst of colour, but with the right plants and the right care, they can continue looking colourful, healthy and enjoyable well into the autumn.

At this time of year, regular maintenance really does make a difference.

Plants need regular deadheading and tidying, lawns can suffer during dry spells, and shrubs benefit from light pruning to keep them in good shape.

Watering deeply and less regularly, rather than little and often, helps the plants to build stronger roots and cope better as climate conditions change.

Early autumn is also one of the best times for repairing or replacing tired lawn areas. The soil is still warm, rainfall is usually more reliable, and new turf establishes far more effectively before winter sets in.

It’s also a good time to refresh borders with new planting. After a full growing season, it becomes much easier to see which plants have worked well For editorial and advertising call 07939 005218

and which areas could benefit from fresh colour, structure or seasonal interest. I grow many of my own plants at home and enjoy selecting varieties that suit both the garden and local conditions, helping create planting that improves year after year rather than needing constant change.

Smaller landscaping improvements can also make a noticeable difference at this stage.

Refreshing pathways, adding raised sleeper borders or improving seating areas can all help bring a garden back into shape before the colder months arrive.

This time of year is also a good time to start thinking about what bulbs to start planting in the autumn for next spring.

A well­kept garden should still feel enjoyable at the end of summer, not just at the beginning.

MiMagazine chats with... Heidi Instance Heidi Instance is a fashion designer and runs a womenswear, lifestyle boutique and studio in Markyate High Street, with her latest collection designed to help women in midlife enjoy fashion again, have fun with their wardrobes, and wear clothes that make them feel great.

What sparked your interest in fashion design and garment making? My passion for design started before I can remember, being around my parents and grandparents, who were florists and graphic designers. They were creating living art every day.

They were such a fantastic inspiration to me. I developed this love of creativity and art and textiles at school and then onto my B.A degree in Fashion.

My dissertation was ‘Dying for life’ and through this I discovered how much oil is used in the production of fake fur. My work showcased in London Fashion Week. This led me to design and manufacture a ready­to­wear collection using real sheepskin and leather. I set up ‘Heidi Instance Couture’ in 1998 and turned my focus to design; designing and making bespoke bridal, special occasion wear, and my clients included some famous celebrities in the area. I paused when I got married and became a mum of two wonderful boys. I didn’t stop creating and in 2015 my next venture began with ‘Hides Couture’, when my attention turned back to sheepskin. I was extremely proud to have designed and made the last long sheepskin coat worn by the iconic football commentator John Motson.

What inspired you to open a boutique in Markyate? The reason I have the wonderful, light studio space in Markyate is a legacy to my parents.

Losing my mother to cancer has enabled me to get the space and have my business away from home.

So pleased the space wasn’t turned into another flat!

What gives you the most satisfaction from your work? I love people. The biggest satisfaction from my job is to give women confidence to be themselves in what they wear. Everyone that comes into the studio has our undivided attention in a calm space.

It is unbelievable that nearly everybody that enters dislikes something about their bodies. It is such a

shame in society that we do not embrace every lump and bump, especially around our midlife when the next chapter in our lives needs to be a confident one.

What was your first job? From university I designed products for clothing, homeware catalogues.

Any hobbies or pastimes? I love painting and walking in the woods with my husband and my dogs, especially when the bluebells are out.

Book you most enjoyed or that inspired you? This makes me laugh. Unfortunately I never seem to make book club as I never get around to reading the books and then try to listen on Audible. Life seems very busy at the moment developing our next collection and gathering feedback from our customers. The one book that I think is the most interesting for our planet is Patrick Grant’s ‘LESS’; definitely worth reading if you’re interested in fashion.

Film/TV Show you most enjoyed? At the moment we’re hooked on a crime drama, ‘I will find you’, written by Harlan Coben. So many twists in the plot.

I hope it’s a positive ending!

Favourite drink? A rosé wine on a summer night surrounded by family and friends.

Best holiday or weekend break? Going to a luxury spa for some rest and relaxation.

If you could invite any four people to a dinner party, who would they be? This is a tricky question. Has to be first, my darling husband, who has been with me since we were 18 years old. My rock; always gives me a realistic answer; a crackerjack businessman! My deceased Mum and Dad, who I adored and miss hugely. To hear what they thought of the studio and if I’m spending their money wisely!

Wonderful role models on how to be kind and caring, to put yourself in other people’s shoes even in business. Dr Edith Egar, who wrote ‘The gift’. An Auschwitz survivor, a hero in a million ways… sorry that’s a heavy note! And Iris Apfel, a fun fashion icon. A dynamic person, legend, bold, outspoken and colourful. Reminds me of some women in my family; rare birds!

Just realised the question was for four, not five people. You do realise I’m dyslexic! Most of my family have been and this is something I always look for in my staff; it doesn’t have to hold you back!

Community Group opens new gazebo at local primary school

R

edbourn Community Group has funded a new gazebo in the playground of Redbourn Primary School so that the children and others can have a useful outside space, protected from the sun and other elements. It has already proved invaluable during the recent heatwaves.

The gazebo was formally opened on July 9 by the Group’s chair, Edward Wheen, in a ceremony attended by other representatives of the Community Group, including a number of former teachers at the school, as well as the Headteacher, Emma Fenn, other current teachers, children and parents.

Redbourn Community Group supports all communities in Redbourn including, in this case, younger members of the community. Its activities include, among many other things, providing and running regular shopping trips and weekly outings on its minibus service and, through its team of volunteer drivers, arranging

lifts to medical appointments for those in the village without access to transport, together with friendly walks and talks and the loan of mobility equipment and scooters.

Local charity urges community to help make a difference

ertfordshire­based homelessness charity, DENS, has launched the ‘More Than’ Appeal to enable is life­changing services to move into new headquarters.

Construction work is well underway for the new DENS Centre, developed in partnership with Dacorum Borough Council.

The charity is relying on the generosity of its community to fund items such as mugs, laptops and chairs – which may seem very ordinary at first glance. However, these items will help to create valuable opportunities that empower local people to take their next positive steps.

For example, a donation to the appeal will help ensure a mug is more than a mug – as for Amy, a mug of tea marks the moment she will start to get on top of rental arrears and keep her family in their home, when she chats to the team at DENS. When the British summer warms up, your car’s air conditioning quickly becomes more than a luxury. A reputable garage should be able to explain exactly what is included, from basic re­gassing to diagnostics and leak checks. Technicians must be F­ Gas trained because refrigerant is controlled by law and harmful to the environment if handled incorrectly.

As with annual car servicing, garages vary in what they offer, and an air conditioning (A/C) service is no different, so it is important to know what you are being offered: Here’s what is worth knowing: a simple re­gas may restore cooling, an air­con clean tackles smells and bacteria, and a full service checks the whole system so small issues can be found before they become expensive repairs.

Re‐gas/Recharge If your air conditioning is not blowing cold air, a re­ gas may help if the refrigerant level is low.

The process is simple and broadly involves: • Checking the system for leaks • Determining correct refrigerant volume • Pressure check system • Removing any old refrigerant gas and oil from your system • Replacing this with the correct amount of new refrigerant and lubricant • Check again for leaks A vacuum test checks whether the system can hold pressure. If it cannot, there may be a leak or damage that needs further investigation before fresh refrigerant is added.

Air‐con clean/De‐bug If your air conditioning smells musty – sometimes like damp socks – bacteria, mould or fungi may be building up on the evaporator, especially if the system has not been used for a while.

allergies, as spores can be blown through the vents into the cabin. An air­con clean, sometimes called a de­bug, treats the cabin and vents to help kill bacteria and remove unpleasant odours.

Air conditioning service A full air­conditioning service goes further than a re­ gas. It checks the key parts of the system, removes old refrigerant and moisture, tests for leaks, refills the correct gas and oil, and confirms the temperature output afterwards.

A service consists of: • Check system components such as hoses, belts, condenser, compressor, fans, electrics, etc • Check internal system controls, flaps, heating, etc • Recover any existing refrigerant from the system • Vacuum A/C system • Re­gas (re­charge) A/C system with refrigerant to vehicle specific levels • Add A/C oil and UV leak detection dye • Leak­test components • Full post re­gas system test • Update service records The A/C system components and internal system controls will be inspected looking for obvious signs of damage or leaks. Next, the system is vacuumed, which removes all refrigerant, A/C oil, moisture, etc.

When complete, the vacuum pressure is checked to see if it holds. If not, it is a sign of a leak as the air is getting in and would need further investigation.

Assuming all is well, the system is then recharged with new, clean refrigerant, and some oil with UV dye so even if there is a tiny leak, it can be seen and any repair costs can be advised.

After the right amount of refrigerant and A/C oil is being held in the system, the A/C can be started to make sure it’s all working as it should, and the temperature coming out of the air vents measured.

The system is then checked again for leaks.

Some garages offer a sanitiser and pollen replacement if this hasn’t already been replaced as part of regular servicing.

A service is comprehensive and offers a future­ proofing of the vehicle’s refrigerant system.

17 Your questions answered

Do I have to get my air‐con serviced?

Most manufacturers recommend an air­con service every one to two years. Over time, efficiency drops (by around 10% a year), the system has to work harder, and fuel use can increase – so regular maintenance is cheaper than waiting for a fault.

Can I just have a re‐gas/recharge?

Yes, you can choose a re­gas. However, if the system has stopped working because of a leak or another fault, simply topping it up may only be a short­term fix. A service is often a more economical choice and also confirms to manufacturer servicing requirements.

Can I re‐gas my air‐con system myself?

You can purchase air­con gas kits if you would like to attempt the job yourself, but we wouldn’t advise it – they are also almost as expensive as having the system properly

serviced by a professional. There are also safety factors to be considered too: specialists are trained with good reason And if you have an electric vehicle, do not attempt air­con repairs yourself. The system can be linked to high­voltage components, so it should only be checked by a trained professional.

Should I use the air‐con in the winter?

Yes. Air conditioning dehumidifies the cabin, helping to reduce misting and moisture on cold mornings. Using it throughout the year also helps keep seals lubricated, which can reduce refrigerant leaks. The RAC recommends you consider it as an essential part of car maintenance that could directly save you money on repair work further down the line. If air­con is not used for long periods, it can seize up, and circulation suffers.

The new air‐con gas Newer cars use Hydrofluoro Olefin gas (1234yf), which is 98% less climate damaging than its predecessor and is also described as having a low global warming potential (GWP).

Newer cars often use R1234yf refrigerant, which has a much lower global warming potential than the older R134a gas. Most vehicles built before 2014 used R134a, while R1234yf was phased in from 2014 and became standard for many new cars from 2017.

There are fewer garages with the correct equipment for the new gas as it remains expensive and less economical for smaller independent garages to invest in. Main dealers will offer this service, as we do at Redbourn Auto Solutions.

Electric vehicles Electric and hybrid vehicles need air­conditioning maintenance too — and in many cases it is even more important. The system can help manage battery and motor temperatures, supporting performance, charging and battery life.

In almost all hybrid and electric vehicles, the air­ con system is also responsible for the Thermal Management of the battery to maintain maximum efficiency and prevent battery damage.

Recirculation of air The recirculation button helps the car cool faster by reusing air that is already inside the cabin instead of pulling in hot outside air. It can also help keep out unpleasant smells, such as traffic fumes, but it should not be left on for too long.

An alternative way to efficiently expel hot air within the car is to roll down the windows a bit when you first turn on your vehicle. This will help flush out all the stuffy air Even if you do this for just a few minutes, you’ll noticeably speed up the process of cooling down the car to a comfortable level.

Why do I get a pool of water under my car?

In summer, a small pool of clear water under the car is usually condensation from the air­ con system, so there is no need to panic. In the heat, your air­con compressor works twice as hard and the unit itself can freeze over as it sucks moisture out of the car. When the car is stationary, the ice starts to melt dripping into a puddle under it. However, if it smells or has colour, contact your garage!

How long does it take for an air‐con service?

Its an interesting question; we have seen consumers bragging that a fast fit centre has completed it in 10­15 minutes! In short, there is no rushing the machine! It cannot remove and force the gas in any quicker.

Exercise a degree of caution if a fast re­gas is offered, as many centres will be targeted on volume of sales. It will take 1 to 1.5 hours to complete an air­con service correctly.

However, you should avoid using it for too long.

Newer cars are increasingly sealed, so using air recirculation can increase the carbon dioxide levels and recirculate bacteria already inside the car.

Some newer models of vehicles come pre­ equipped with sensors that monitor air moisture levels and switch automatically between fresh air and recirculation.

Is there anything else I can do to ensure my air‐con is running efficiently?

Run your air conditioning at least once a week throughout the year. It is a misconception that it is not fuel­efficient to do this. It is far more costly to put it right!

Although motorists mostly use their air­con system more in the summer, it is also important in the winter.

It creates dry warm air rather than the humid air from outside. This demists your car windscreen quicker.

helping young people become happier, healthier and more confident in themselves | In golf, you will hit bad shots. You’ll have rounds where nothing seems to go your way. You can either let the last shot ruin the next one, or you can accept it, learn from it and move forwards.

That mindset has shaped the way I live my life.

I’ve always believed in falling forwards. Things won’t always go to plan, but as long as you’re still moving, learning and building momentum, you’re making progress. Momentum has become one of the principles I try to live by every day, and I genuinely believe golf laid the foundations for that way of thinking.

You’re only as good as your next shot. You can’t change what’s already happened. All you can control is how you respond. That lesson has helped me through difficult moments in business, in coaching and in life, and it’s one I still remind myself of today.

hen people ask me what golf has given me, they often expect me to talk about becoming a PGA Professional or building a successful coaching business.

The truth is, golf gave me something much bigger than that. It helped shape the person I am today.

As a child, I struggled with my weight and lacked confidence. I often felt uncomfortable in myself and never imagined that one sport would have such a huge impact on my life. Then I found golf.

Golf gave me a reason to get outside, be active and work towards something that I genuinely loved. As my golf improved, so did my confidence. I became fitter, healthier and happier, but more importantly, I found a community of people who encouraged me, believed in me and helped me grow. Not just as a golfer, but as a young person.

Looking back now, I realise golf taught me lessons that had very little to do with hitting a golf ball. One of the biggest lessons was resilience.

respect others, handle pressure and conduct myself. Those experiences gave me confidence that has helped me build businesses, develop relationships and create opportunities that I never imagined when I first picked up a club.

People often assume my goal is to create the next big star... it isn’t. If one of my juniors goes on to become a tour pro, that would be fantastic. But what matters most to me is helping young people become happier, healthier and more confident in themselves. If they leave my coaching believing more in their own ability than when they arrived, then I feel I’ve done my job.

During the summer holidays, it’s easy for children to spend more time indoors and on screens. Golf offers something different. It gets them outside, keeps them active, introduces them to new friends and teaches life skills that stay with them long after the round has finished.

This summer we’re running our Junior Summer Camps at Redbourn Golf Club, with full and half­ day sessions packed with coaching, games and fun on the course. Our weekly junior coaching programme returns in September for children aged 6­15, and private lessons are also available.

I often wonder what would have happened if I hadn’t picked up a golf club all those years ago.

I honestly don’t know.

What I do know is that golf gave me confidence, direction, lifelong friendships, a career I love and a way of looking at life that still drives me today.

Maybe that’s what golf could do for your child too.

eechwood Park School in Markyate is celebrating after being awarded the prestigious Eco‐Schools Green Flag Award with Distinction 2026, recognising the school's outstanding commitment to environmental action and sustainability.

The exciting news was met with delight across the school community. The award reflects a year of hard work by the school's dedicated ECO Team and enthusiastic Nature Ninjas, who have inspired positive environmental change both within the school and beyond.

From reducing litter and energy consumption across the campus to embedding sustainability throughout the curriculum, pupils and staff have embraced opportunities to make a meaningful difference. Eco­Schools assessors praised the school’s “brilliant uptake” of environmental initiatives and highlighted the way pupils and staff actively encouraged others to get involved. Particular recognition was given to creative curriculum projects, including Year 4 and Year 6 artwork made from recycled materials, such as mini­me sculptures and African masks.

The assessment also commended Beechwood Park’s strong communication and community engagement. The school's Eco­Board, social media updates, magazine features and daily notices were all recognised for helping to raise awareness and inspire participation across the wider school community.

A special mention was given to the Nature Ninjas’ collaboratively written acrostic Eco­Code,

particularly its powerful final line: “Stand up and speak out for our planet.”

The assessors noted how staff have empowered pupils to develop confidence, share ideas and become passionate ambassadors for environmental change.

Cheese scones These melt‐in‐the‐mouth cheese scones make a perfect accompaniment to a homemade soup or stew. Alternatively, they're great on their own with a slather of butter, for a quick savoury treat.

Top Tip

Don’t overwork the dough – only combine ingredients roughly. When the dough has been formed, flatten it out, fold it over like a book and flatten a little again. This gives the scone a ‘mouth’ so it can be split into halves without needing to cut it.

Step 1 Preheat the oven to 180°C (160°C fan/gas mark 4).

Ingredients 450g self­raising flour 110g margarine 100g grated mature Cheddar cheese 1 tsp salt 1 tsp cracked black pepper 1 egg 150ml milk 1 tsp English mustard

Step 2 Place the flour and margarine in your mixing bowl and rub it together with your fingertips until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs.

Step 3 Stir in most of the cheese (leave enough for the top of the scones later), and the salt and pepper.

Step 4 Mix the egg with three­quarters of the milk and the mustard.

Pour into the flour mix and use a spoon to combine the wet and dry ingredients. Add the remaining milk, a little at a time, until the mixture comes together and forms a dough.

Step 5 Divide the dough into two even­ sized pieces and gently roll into large balls on a lightly floured surface. Flatten them lightly and cut into four by slicing both ways across the middle. Place on your lined baking tray.

Step 6 Sprinkle the remaining cheese on top of the scones and bake in the preheated oven for 10­ 15 minutes or until risen and golden.
