Project Overview For this project, students are to develop a self-managed substantial project that pro- motes a specific interest, such as a cause or social issue. The final concept will be presented with 4 seperate deliverables.

Overview The 2018 World Cup was hosted at Russia from June to July, and it is the biggest sporting event in the world.

The United States has been present in the 1930, 1934, 1950 edition and every edition since 1990 Italy World Cup. This year however, is the first edition that the USMNT failed to qualify for the World Cup as they lost to Trinidad and Tobago in the final CONCACAF qualifying game in October 11th, 2017. Fans and media dubbed this day as “The Doomsday” and began to search for answers.

In the wake of this I also began to search for the reasons, and I went

further down the rabbit hole, I realized that the root cause mostly has to do with financial and cultural problems.

For a country that is the 5th most populated in the world, the US theoretically could produce a team that could rival traditional soccer powerhouses like Brazil and Germany, yet the US’s FIFA ranking is at 22 as of 2018, 7 places below Germany and 25 below Brazil. So how come a nation that has 300 million people couldn’t put together a world class team that could qualify for the World Cup, let alone rivaling the traditional soccer powerhouses like Brazil or Germany?

The answer turned out to be in the system.

Unlike other sports such as basketball and (American) football, soccer mostly utilizes a pay-to-play system that participants have to sign up to play. As a consequence, rich middle-to-upper class suburban white kids are dominating the soccer landscape of the United States while financially struggling Latinos or Black-Americans from inner cities are priced out of the game; and creating a racial and financial segregation in what is supposed to be an equal and inclusive game.

So by this extent, I am also tackling a social issue.

Mission Statement Aspira Soccer League is a free-to-play soccer league that is aiming to increase the participation in national soccer and eliminate inequality in the sport by providing an alternative to the current pay-to-play system. Anyone can sign up and play the beautiful game regardless of their gender, race or age.

The academy program also helps players to improve their skills by offering workshops and talks, all in the while identifying young talents and help them to develop their career.

Target Audiences The primary audience will primarily be kids and teenagers aged from 10 to 18 of both gender.

The decision is to provide these an alternative to the pay-to-play model that currently exists in the United States. Furthermore, it is also aimed at the parents of this particular age group as the free-to-play nature will be a significant factor for this group to consider letting their kids to play in ASL as there are no financial burdens that are associated with regular soccer camps.

Similar Leagues Street Soccer USA is another league that currently exists in the United States that is similar to ASL. Their aim is the fight poverty and empower underserved neighborhoods through the beautiful game. However, one thing that sets us apart is that our inclusion of the academy program that aims to motivate the players to improve their game, and ultimately strive to be a better player.

Staging Area The staging area is the minimum buffering area surrounding the logo to keep elements organized and to preserve the logo’s identity. The soccer ball is used to define the staging area, and any elements are forbidden to get close to area defined by the soccer ball.
