Planning Guide. The Trusted Directory for Group Travel Organisers

Welcome to the Annual Planning Guide Optimism, Opportunity and Onwards...

If the last few years taught us anything, it’s that the coach tourism sector is remarkably resilient. It adapts, recalibrates, and then quietly roars back into life full of early starts, high-vis jackets, group lunches, and the unmistakable sound of forty people agreeing that the lemon drizzle in the gift shop cafe was excellent.

And now, as we look ahead to the rest of 2025 and into 2026, something more than just recovery is happening. The latest CTA insights tell us that operators aren’t just surviving, they're flying. Group sales are up. Continental tours are booming. And across the board, bookings are not only holding steady but accelerating. From Shearings to Skills Holidays, from Leisuretime to Acklams and Albatross, operators are reporting growth in the double digits. European travel is up 7 to 12 percent depending on the route, and there’s a renewed appetite for classic destinations like Austria and Italy. Luxuria, Leger's business-class coach experience, is enjoying its highest ever demand. People want comfort, style, and a great view through the front window and they want to share it.

This isn’t just statistical noise, it's the sound of the industry getting its confidence back.

There’s optimism, too, in the political breeze. While nothing moves too quickly in Westminster, recent signs point towards warmer ties with Europe. Visa waivers for younger travellers, new bilateral arrangements for school and youth trips, and simplified coach operator documentation are all being explored. It's not a grand reopening, more a careful re-threading of old ties but for group organisers, it

means smoother planning and fewer headaches.

Back home, there are a few new quirks to navigate. Some UK cities are now introducing modest “tourism taxes” small charges on overnight stays designed to help councils fund services and manage visitor flows. It’s not quite Rome or Bruges yet, but it’s worth flagging for those building multistop itineraries. That said, it’s unlikely to deter the core coach crowd especially when a clean hotel, a hot breakfast, and a front-row seat to Britain’s heritage are still on offer.

More broadly, UK tourism is enjoying a gentle resurgence. Attractions are investing again. Hotels are rolling out the red carpets for groups. Market towns, historic houses, and coastal gems are seeing coach visits rise, helped in no small part by a growing recognition that group visitors don’t just show up, they support local economies, fill off-peak slots, and buy jam by the tray.

So whether you’re plotting a pilgrimage to Canterbury, a steam-train ride through the Dales, or a few days soaking up Flemish art in Ghent, the guide in your hands is designed to help. With updated contacts, fresh offers, editorial features and trusted partners, it’s more than a directory, it's a toolkit for a thriving year ahead.

Here’s to new adventures, old favourites, and happy travellers. Nigel

AGTO, formally known as the Association for Group Travel Organisers, is the UK’s foremost champion for the community behind group travel planners, organisers, and those who bring collective journeys to life. Since its inception in 1991, this independent membership body has steadily grown, earning its reputation as the go to hub for professionals across the sector

What i s AGTO?

At its heart, AGTO exists to connect, support, and empower. It serves two distinct but complementarygroups: Group Travel Organisers (GTOs), who craft, curate, and coordinate trips for

diverse groups, and Partner Members destinations, attractions, tour operators, hotels, transport providers who work directly with GTOs to enrich the travel experience .

Nearly 450 GTOs are registered members, representing over 200,000 potential travellers; 250 Partner Members bring services and expertise to the table. These two arms of membership are interlinked, each sustaining the other and together they forge a vibrant ecosystem that thrives on collaboration.

Member sh ip per ks

AGTO is generous with perks. Insurance tailored specifically for group travel organisers, legal updates, a dedicated advice helpline these are just the beginning. There’s VIP access to trade shows, National Trust membership (in both England and Scotland), and a range of exclusive discounts. Meanwhile, Partners enjoy access to AGTO’s extensive GTO database (fully GDPR compliant), opportunities to host fam trips, discounted trade show

exhibitions, editorial space in the quarterly AGTO magazine, free handbook listings, social media promotion, use of the AGTO logo an impressive marketing toolkit.

Governan ce and l eadership

AGTO’s board is an intentional blend of voices: half are GTOs, half are Partner Members, collectively steering the association’s mission and vision. At its helm sits CEO Wendy Hartley Scarff, supported by administrator Karen Heading and a rotating cast of branch based director roles bringing regional insight across Eastern, Southern, Central, Kent, Northern, and Scottish branches

Events that br ing it to life

AGTO isn’t just administrative, it's social, dynamic, and on the move.

The flagship event is the AGTO Showcase: for example, in February 2025 participants gathered at Bournemouth’s Marsham Court Hotel for three days of networking, fam trips, gala dinners, and practical sessions. It blended seaside hospitality with hands on site visits tours of Brownsea Island, battlefield venues, art collections followed by an optional Thursday excursion to a 15th century house and physic garden in Poole

AGTO also maintains a busy calendar of regional meet ups, trade show representation, and frequent contributions to industry publications.

Why it matters

In an industry where details matter from coach bookings to entry fee discounts AGTO acts as an anchor: ensuring that group travel organisers are informed, insured, funded with competitive deals, and connected to high quality partners. It doesn’t just speak for its members it equips them, building their credibility and extending their reach.

What’s next?

Looking ahead, AGTO’s planning includes the 2026 AGTO Showcase (27 Feb–1 Mar 2026 in Leicester), reinforcing its role as a forward thinking force. Behind the scenes, the association continues to refine its objectives expanding coverage, enhancing communication, and responding to legal, insurance, and sectoral changes.

In short, AGTO is the glue holding together Britain’s group travel network organising, advocating, connecting, and advocating again, all with an eye for detail, warmth, and mutual benefit. Here, group travel isn’t just about logistics; it’s about community brought together under one banner, with one voice, and one shared purpose.

And so, we come to the end of our tour a dozen hotels, each with its own distinct personality, yet all sharing the Daish’s touch

www daishs com

Honfleur is the kind of place that seems painted rather than built Sloping timber-framed houses lean into each other like gossiping neighbours, reflected in the still, mirror-like harbour where fishing boats bob as if reluctant to leave. You don’t stroll here, you drift past salt-worn shutters, boulangeries dusted in flour, and the spire of Sainte-Catherine’s, all wood and wonder There’s the faint smell of apples and salt, of cider and sea Painters came for the light, but it’s the quiet that stays with you an old, golden hush that settles in the bones, as if the whole town is exhaling

East of England

The East of England doesn’t shout. It hums. A broad, flat canvas of sky and silence, where windmills lean into the breeze and villages nap beneath great billowing clouds. It’s a place for gentle pottering or gentle peddling, where even the rivers seem unhurried. Cyclists glide, walkers meander, and boats go nowhere in particular but beautifully. Among the marshes and meadows are gardens that look painted, stately homes that look lived in, and the odd rollercoaster just to keep things interesting. And if you glance up just once you might see a mosquito. Not the insect. The aircraft. This is East Anglia, after all.

East Midlands

The East Midlands has never much cared for fuss. It gets on with things quietly, solidly whether that’s turning soil, firing furnaces or pouring a pint. It’s a place of old stone and older stories, where abbeys whisper and cathedrals loom through mist. From the brooding Fens that barely blink to the Peaks that rise like a shrug of the land, it’s a region stitched with contrasts. You’ll find grandeur at Chatsworth, poetry at Newstead, and if your boots need a rest, England’s oldest hotel in Buxton where the water’s famous, but the bar staff know you didn’t come for the water.

Heart of England

The Heart of England has always had a certain clout. It made its money in wool, then made the world in iron Coventry stitched it, the Black Country hammered it. And yet, north and west of Birmingham, things soften. You get valleys, views, and villages where time’s not in a hurry. Canals curl through it all more than Venice, they say, though gondolas remain in short supply. You can walk, cycle, or float past stately homes and gardens with stories etched into every wall. At Croome Court, wartime secrets lurk behind elegant plasterwork, while outside, the land rolls away in confident swells ‘Capability’ Brown’s first great flourish, gazing out over the dreamy blue of the Malverns.

London

London doesn’t need an introduction. It needs a lie-down. A city so crammed with icons, ideas, and ambition it barely pauses to catch its breath. Big Ben ticks, the Eye spins, the Tower glowers, and somewhere behind you, a busker is murdering Wonderwall. You want museums? Free. Art? Everywhere. Theatre? World-class. Food? From samosas to sourdough. And between it all: green. Unexpected, unruly green. London’s a National Park City now proof that even a metropolis can stop to smell the roses (or spot a stag in Richmond). You can boat in Hyde Park, picnic on Primrose Hill, and still make curtain-up in the West End. If you can’t find it here, it may not be worth finding.

The North East

The North East doesn’t so much welcome you as stride up, shake your hand and offer you a bacon sarnie. It’s coast and castles, cliffs and cathedrals and, naturally, Ant and Dec. Hadrian’s Wall slices through its wilder bits like a stern eyebrow, while three cities Newcastle, Sunderland and Durham add gloss, graft and grandeur in equal measure. Durham Cathedral stands like it’s been carved from thunder, the sort of building that makes you walk quieter. And then there’s the Angel of the North arms outstretched like it’s trying to hug the whole of Gateshead. Which, frankly, feels about right. This is the North East. Bold, beautiful, and not short on charm.

Discover a woodland hideaway playground at The Plotters’ Forest, built within a Christmas tree plantation, where ‘close to nature’ takes on a whole new meaning. Think acres of unexpected elegance, complete with heritage buildings, remodelled gardens, stylish shopping and local food sourced or inspired from the Raby Estates.

Experience the Force of Nature

Discover one of the most impressive waterfalls in England situated in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Learn more about the geology, history and wildlife on the woodland walk to the falls, choose from a guided walk or use the Raby Estates app for points of interest along the way.

The hotel has new individually designed ensuite bedrooms, combining country charm with fresh, modern facilities. Alongside this, the hotel has a popular restaurant and ser ves delicious hot drinks and scones through to evening meals.

The North West

The North West built empires out of cotton and steam, then soundtracked its legacy with guitars and swagger. It gave us canals and cathedrals, but also The Beatles, the Stone Roses, and a football rivalry so fierce it’s practically a religion. Liverpool hums with melody, Manchester crackles with edge and somewhere between the warehouses and the terraces, you’ll find museums, murals, and the odd Mancunian in sunglasses (regardless of weather). It’s the UK’s third most crowded corner, and you’ll see why everyone wants in. Beyond the city buzz, estuaries brim with birdsong, and the Lake District unfolds in sighs and reflections. It’s grit and grace, side by side.

The South East

The South East has always known how to show off tastefully, of course. A place of clipped lawns and clipped accents, where gardens bloom with theatrical flair and the coastline stretches out like it’s on holiday too. It’s the bit of Britain that leans sunward, dry of weather and rich in history, with castles, cathedrals and cream teas at reassuring intervals. Two National Parks bookend the rolling countryside, and if London is the nation's heart, the South East is surely its weekend home. Trains roll in, stresses roll out, and suddenly you’re somewhere altogether gentler. Bring your walking shoes or don’t. This place doesn’t mind how fast you move.

The South West

Jam first or cream first? In the South West, you can risk both and still be warmly welcomed. This is storybook country Blyton wrote it, du Maurier haunted it, and film crews can’t stay away (Poldark’s smoulder helped, of course). Between moors that brood and coasts that dazzle, you’ll find Exmoor, Dartmoor, and Bath one a misty wilderness, the other a golden curve of Georgian elegance. There’s Stonehenge standing like an ancient shrug, the fossil-flecked cliffs of the Jurassic Coast, and villages where pies, pasties and pints appear with theatrical timing. Add a squint of sunlight, and frankly, you may never leave.

Yorkshire

Yorkshire doesn’t do modesty. It does magnificence. From the wild sweep of the North York Moors to the green-folded hush of the Dales, this is landscape with presence. Villages cling like moss to hillsides, and cities York, Harrogate, Leeds stride forward with cobbles underfoot and confidence in every brick. The locals call it “God’s own country,” and frankly, who’s arguing? It gave us the Brontë sisters, after all Charlotte, Emily, Anne whose windswept imaginings now rattle across heather and stone. Yorkshire is both epic and everyday, a place where teashops rival cathedrals and every footpath promises a novel in waiting.

Wales

Wales is a land that sings, sometimes in choirs, sometimes in the wind that races down its valleys and rattles its castle gates. Once defined by coal and chapel, it now shifts between mountain majesty and seaside serenity with effortless charm. Snowdonia looms like a sleeping giant, while the coastline over 100 beaches strong stretches out in golden punctuation. Castles? Wales collects them like postcards. Conwy, Caernarfon, Caerphilly, Beaumaris each with enough battlements to launch a thousand daydreams. And tucked into its far corner, St David’s, Britain’s tiniest city, cradles a cathedral big enough for legends. Wales doesn’t ask for attention. It earns it.

Scotland

Scotland doesn’t so much unfold as rise misty, muscular and magnificently moody. It’s the British Isles’ shape-shifter: mountains and moorland, lochs that brood, beaches that blink in sudden sunlight. The Highlands breathe old legends, the Islands keep their secrets, and castles perch like punctuation on every ridge. Golfers, falconers, foragers there’s a tour for that. And the food? No longer just tatties and a dram though you’ll find those too but a world-class spread of smokehouses, seafood, and Highland hospitality. Edinburgh whispers and winks from its ghost-strewn closes, while the Western Isles call from across the waves. The only thing you’ll struggle with is knowing when to stop.

Ireland

Ireland doesn’t just tell stories it breathes them. Its heritage seeps into every note, poem and passing pint. From ancient myths to modern mischief, it’s shaped the soul of storytelling itself. Step into a pub and you’ll find philosophy served with your Guinness, music threading the air like woodsmoke, and that elusive magic known as craic part banter, part warmth, part something you can’t bottle. Food, drink, laughter, and lyricism form the country’s cultural backbone. In Ireland, even the silences have something to say.
