First off the good news after years of wrangling, bureaucracyinduced migraines, and the diplomatic equivalent of silent treatment, the UK and the EU have finally agreed on closer ties, in fact. The recent "landmark" deal, signed at Lancaster House, was heralded by both Prime Minister Keir Starmer and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen as a significant reset in UK-EU relations . It's enough to make a group organiser sigh with relief Coaches can now roll more smoothly across borders, itineraries are less likely to buckle under paperwork, and suppliers on both sides of the Channel are remembering they quite like working together after all It feels, dare I say, almost optimistic.
And what better time to capture that sense of forward motion than in the pages of this issue? We start with our Editor’s Spotlight, a brisk romp around Britain’s best attractions, the sort of whistle-stop journey that leaves you wanting to pull the coach over and spend an hour (or a day) in each From stately homes to modern marvels, it’s a reminder of just how much the UK has to offer group travellers, no passport stamps required Then we board a different kind of
carriage entirely with our feature on Scenic Heritage Railways. There’s something deeply comforting about a steam train. The whistle, the rhythm, the sense of occasion and for groups, it’s the perfect blend of nostalgia and novelty We’ve picked out some of the finest routes for your next grand day out
Elsewhere, our Perfect for Groups round-up delivers exactly what it promises: accessible, welcoming destinations that know how to roll out the red carpet for 20, 30, or 50 people at a time. These are the places that understand logistics, love a coach party, and remember to offer a discount on tea.
In our South East Showcase, we linger a little longer over the rolling hills and half-timbered towns of England’s bottom right corner And speaking of charm, we take a closer look at Canterbury part cathedral, part living museum, part shopping haven
Which leads us neatly to our final feature: Shopping & Markets. Whether it’s vintage buttons in a covered arcade or artisan cheese in a seaside shed, the UK’s markets are thriving and groups are very much invited.
Enjoy the issue. The roads are open, the welcomes are warm, and group travel is back in business.

Why You (Yes, You) Should Join the AGTO
There’s a certain moment, somewhere between trying to sort coach parking and realising Margaret’s gluten intolerance has morphed into a fullblown crusade, when every group organiser asks the same question: Is there anyone else out there who gets this?
Enter stage left: the AGTO – the Association of Group Travel Organisers – a gloriously sensible idea in a world of travel chaos. Imagine a club where everyone speaks fluent itinerary, understands the mystical workings of heritage railways, and knows the difference
between a free place and a familiarisation trip (and why you should always say yes to both)
AGTO is more than a badge though you do get one, and it’s very smart It’s a network, a lifeline, a gathering of like-minded souls who also lie awake at night wondering whether 43 people can use a tearoom with 18 chairs These are your people
Join, and suddenly you’re not flying solo
You’re getting legal support, insurance benefits designed for actual human beings, and access to trade passes for castles, stately homes, and gardens that smell of lemon cake and history English Heritage? National Trust? They roll out the red carpet. You become part of something that actually understands your world your spreadsheets, your last-minute cancellations, your
triumphs when everyone says “That was the best trip we’ve ever done, dear ”
There are showcases (with wine), regional meetings (with sandwiches), and newsletters (without fluff) Plus, proper lobbying the sort that makes ministers mutter the word “coaches” with a mix of dread and admiration
And let’s not forget the sheer relief of knowing that if you need help legally, logistically, or emotionally, someone at AGTO will pick up the phone and say, “Let’s sort this out.” That alone is worth the membership fee.
So if you’ve ever planned a group trip and felt like you were herding caffeinated cats across Britain, it’s time AGTO won’t book your tickets or chase Doris for her deposit –but it will give you the
tools, connections, and quiet reassurance that you’re not in this alone

Pauline and Ken: two adventurers, countless stories, endless inspiration.
On a sunny, but cold, Monday in February we went on a ‘snowdrop walk’ at Colesbourne Gardens in Gloucestershire I had been nervous about booking due to the possibility of inclement weather and the age of our members. However, the members themselves weren’t - the coach was full I had opted for a private tour of the garden rather than go on a public day Although it is £7 dearer, we had a very civilised start to the morning with coffee and homemade cake followed by a brief talk by the owner, Sir Henry Elwys, about the history of the gardens His Grandfather had travelled the world looking for plants, bringing back the original large snowdrop, which was named after him The walk was led by Sir Henry and his head gardener Kate Snowdrop bulbs can cost up to £1800 per bulb and I
don’t think anyone realised just how many varieties there are This garden had over 200 varieties It was a fascinating tour Great swathes of white, interspersed with small pink cyclamen in the arboretum and hellebores in the main garden. There is also a lake in the grounds, with water a beautiful shade of ice blue due to the mineral deposits in the clay soil I was even more pleased that we had booked a private tour when they told us that on the public day before, a Sunday, they had so many visitors they had had to lock the gates and refuse admission.
Almost before we knew it
the first tour of the season, in March to the new Warner’s at Runnymede, was upon us We decided to make one of the optional excursions to Brooklands Motor and Aviation Museum, it being only 45 minutes’ drive away You may have seen the series about it on television, well worth the visit for all ages The other optional excursion was to Windsor with many prebooking Castle visits.
On our free day most of us strolled along the riverbank, past the lock and boat yard, and onwards to the National Trust café at Runnymede French Bros run river cruises from here up the Thames in the season Another walk was into Egham where you will find plaques commemorating Magna Carta along the High Street. One afternoon my friend and I tried our hand at painting with coffee at an hour long craft session whilst others took part in the quizzes that are part of the Warner’s offer
We all agreed that this was a good hotel and were also pleased to learn that Warner’s had kept most of the existing staff when they bought the property, some of whom had worked there 30 or 40 years
Do you remember I said I was going to slow down?
Apart from the Warner’s tour, we had our coffee morning the following week with BTTS on the day after and then, can you imagine Ken’s reaction when I announced I was going on a Success Tours ‘Fam’ trip to Pesaro, in the Le Marche area of Italy The flight was an early one from Heathrow and back late after a very busy 4 days. As neither Ken nor I enjoy driving very far these days, I booked a National Express coach from Coventry to and from Heathrow’s Central Bus Sation, and was pleasantly surprised at the ease and low cost Success Tours arranged an overnight at the Holiday Inn Heathrow, just a short local bus journey away, (U3) the night before and on my return.
I am taking the group in June to Umbria and Le Marche, with our last 2 nights being at the Hotel

Charlie in Pesaro, where we were to stay on the ‘Fam”, so it was a chance to see the hotel and be able to give the group some ideas of what to do on the free day we have.
The Group Organisers attending were from various societies and clubs and we all had a different perspective on what would interest our
members Our days were filled with visits to Museums - the Rossini Museum in Pesaro; the Castle of Gradara, which was the stage for one of Dante’s Divine Comedies and home to Lucrezia Borgia, when married to Giovanni Sforza, Lord of Pesaro
The National Art Gallery of Marche within the Ducal Palace at Urbino houses the famous painting of ‘The Flagellation of Christ” by Piero della Francesca and we also saw works by Raphael, who was born in
Urbino. The Mozzi-Borgetty Library in Macerata was an eye opener with beautiful painted ceilings and thousands of books from the 16th century, including a book on astronomy commissioned by Emperor Charles V and published in 1540. Macerata also has the outdoor theatre “Sferisterio” which stages the annual Rossini Opera Festival.
In Loreto we visited the Basilica of Loreto with its Black Madonna This was in complete contrast to the small and plainly built Dumo that we visited in San Leo This was built in the 7th century and is opposite the even smaller Parish church, built in the 3rd or 4th century over the cell where St Leo used to pray Coach passengers must take a small mini bus (which costs 3 Euros) to make the final ascent into the village. After our visit here we enjoyed one of several included lunches at
Our favourite stop, we all agreed, was at Fano where some of the group followed our local guide Sabine to see the archaeological traces of the Flaminian Way This was the ancient Roman road over the Apennine Mountains to Rome from Rimini. The rest of us swarmed into a local café out of the rain – that poured down every day except one – which served the local Moretta Coffee. This is a small drink of warmed brandy and rum, sweetened with a little sugar, topped with expresso coffee and a small piece of lemon rind You stir it and sip slowly So good that a second round was ordered when the others joined us. I was able to see the restaurant in Pesaro we might use for a group meal on the last
night and I have had quite a lot of recommendations to stop enroute to the airport at Ravenna to see the mosaics and Dante’s tomb as well as Bologna itself
There are so many nice places to visit in the Le Marche region – referred to as ‘The New Tuscany’ when we visited some years ago Ascoli Piceno (breaded
olives), Offida (lace making), Ancona (historic Port), Fabriano (paper mill), Faenza (Ceramics) and the seaside town of San Benadetto to name but a few.
Now I am home I’m busy preparing for our next tour to Killarney, followed by our
the local Corte di Berengario across from the Dumo Excellent, as they all were. We had also visited a small olive mill to sample local food and delicacies at the start of the tour Local wine was served and enjoyed at each meal.
Umbria and Le
Also lots of paperwork to get scanned and sent off to the Tour Operators as we had sell out tours for next year to Paris and the Lake District at the last coffee morning

Southport – a year-round festival of culture and entertainment
There will be few group travel organisers who aren’t familiar with Southport’s diverse programme of events.
Across the year, these events transform the town into an almost continuous celebration of culture, arts and community spirit providing something for every visitor
Perhaps Southport’s bestknown festival, and probably the jewel in the town’s event crown, is Southport Flower Show Taking place this year from Thursday 14 August through to Sunday 17 August, the UK’s largest independent flower show looks set to attract more than 55,000 visitors across four spectacular days. The show transforms Southport’s Victoria Park into a mesmerising display of botanical creativity. Visitors can look forward to being inspired by breathtaking show gardens and floral displays, watch live cookery demonstrations and presentations by horticultural experts, and marvel at cutting-edge landscape design
. Later in the month, over the weekend of Saturday
30 and Sunday 31 August, heads will look to the skies for the annual Southport Air Show. With jawdropping aerial displays, there will be plenty to enjoy on the ground too! From flight simulators to static aircraft and military vehicles, there’s something for everyone. It’s the perfect family day out, offering a mix of adventure, education, and awe-inspiring performances
There are many more events in the calendar, but one more stands out, and it’s the incredible British Musical Fireworks Championship Taking place in the evening (the fireworks look better at night) on Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 September, this event is a must-see for anyone who enjoys a truly spectacular show
The 2025 event will be that extra bit special as six previous champions will return to battle it out head-to-head for the prestigious title of ‘Champion of Champions’! The British Musical Fireworks
Championship isn’t just any fireworks display It’s a pyromusical competition, where fireworks are choreographed perfectly to music, creating an unforgettable experience. Expect some of the most breathtaking displays you’ll ever witness, where every explosion is timed to perfection!
Southport’s events complement the town’s most famous attractions: Pleasureland Theme Park, Kings Gardens & The Marine Lake and the Victorian-canopied shopping boulevard of Lord Street
Coaches can drop off right in the heart of the town, and there’s a purpose-built, secure coach park at Esplanade, with a whole day’s parking for just £5 50 Plan your short break to Southport to coincide with one of the festivals and you’ll have memories to last a lifetime.

Coldharbour Mill is one of the UK’s oldest working woollen mills Set in the heart of the Devon
countryside and on the bank of the River Culm, their industrial heritage site brings to life the stories of the Industrial Revolution and Textile production through the ages
You can see a range of heritage machinery in action, see them fire up their steam engines on their event days or enjoy their wetland, wellbeing and wildlife space as a chance to relax and stroll in the beautiful Devon landscape There has been a mill at Coldharbour, Uffculme, since the time of the Domesday Book, with the current woollen mill in continuous production since 1797.
English Heritage described the mill as "probably one of the best-preserved textile mill complexes in the country It retains the full range of buildings and power system features which characterised the
development of the 19th century textile mill with much of the machinery that was used at the site in the 20th century "
