Comment There is an old saying that there are only two certainties in life: death and taxes. We may soon be able to add another, a tax on going somewhere nice. There’s been plenty of discussion recently about plans to give local areas more power to introduce a visitor levy effectively allowing destinations to decide for themselves whether overnight visitors should make a small contribution. It’s hardly a new idea. Travel around much of the world and some form of tourist tax is already part of the experience. The important question, particularly for groups, is what happens to the money afterwards. If it genuinely helps destinations look after the places we visit, improve facilities and make the visitor experience better, there is an argument for it. If it simply becomes another charge, rather less so. And perhaps that brings us rather neatly to this issue, because ultimately people travel for one reason: there are places worth going to. Christmas is fast approaching, and we’ve brought together some wonderful ideas for groups looking for a little festive magic. From houses dressed for the season to markets, lights, lunches and those experiences that somehow seem better when enjoyed together, Christmas remains one of the great excuses for a group day out.

Contents Of course, a good trip needs more than somewhere to visit, which is why we’re also looking at Perfect Places to Eat, Drink & Sleep. A memorable lunch, a welcoming hotel or simply somewhere that understands groups can turn a good itinerary into a great one. Then we’re off exploring. Canterbury combines history, heritage, shopping and one of Britain’s great cathedrals, while our South East Showcase demonstrates just how much variety can be packed into one corner of the country. And finally, we head to Devon ,a county that seems almost purpose-built for touring. Coast, countryside, towns, villages, cream teas and some glorious scenery along the way. Perhaps that’s the real theme running through this issue. We can debate taxes, funding and who should make the decisions, but the success of tourism ultimately comes down to something much simpler. Give people somewhere worth visiting and a good reason to go. I hope you Enjoy the issue.

Devon Devon doesn’t so much welcome you as quietly absorb you. Somewhere aer the motorway loosens its grip and the roads begin their gentle winding through hedgerows and sleepy villages, the whole pace of life changes. People stop rushing. Conversations lengthen. Lunch somehow becomes an event rather than a necessity. ere’s a particular kind of light in Devon, soer than elsewhere somehow, as though the county has placed a flattering filter over itself long before smartphones arrived. e sea glitters without showing off. e hills roll away in untidy green folds. Even the sheep appear faintly judgemental in an unhurried sort of way. What Devon understands better than most places is balance. It can give you grand scenery without feeling theatrical. One moment you’re standing on a dramatic stretch of coastline watching gulls wheel over the cliffs, the next you’re in a village tearoom debating whether a second slice of cake would be irresponsible or simply respectful to the county. And then there are the small moments that creep up on you unexpectedly. A pub garden catching the last warmth of the aernoon sun. e smell of salt and vinegar driing from paperwrapped chips near the harbour. e

Model Village

comforting sight of a rain shower moving across Dartmoor while you remain, temporarily at least, dry and victorious. Devon has no interest in being fashionable. ank goodness for that. It doesn’t need rooop cocktail bars or buildings designed purely to appear in the background of somebody’s social media post. Its pleasures are older, quieter and infinitely more durable.

Clovelly

Seaton Tram

You come to Devon thinking it will be about scenery, and of course it is. But what stays with you aerwards is the feeling of the place. e unspoken permission to slow down a little. To look out to sea without immediately photographing it. To walk nowhere in particular. To sit outside a café longer than strictly necessary.

Devon's Top Attractions, Perfect for Groups! Devon has a habit of disarming people. You arrive expecting cream teas, dramatic coastlines and postcard villages and, naturally, you find all three in generous supply. But somewhere between the winding lanes, the sea air and the sudden appearance of a pub exactly when you need one, the county begins quietly working its way under your skin. Devon slows people down. Lunches stretch longer here. Conversations become less hurried. Even the sheep standing stubbornly in the middle of the road seem entirely unconcerned by modern life’s obsession with urgency. With more than 300 miles of coastline, two National Parks, five Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and access to the spectacular South West Coast Path, Devon possesses scenery capable of distracting even the most organised group itinerary. Beaches swing from broad golden expanses to hidden coves beneath dramatic cliffs, while Dartmoor National Park spreads across the landscape with ancient tors, wild ponies and skies so large they occasionally seem theatrical. For groups, however, Devon offers far more than scenery alone. is is a county that genuinely understands visitors. Coach groups, educational trips and smaller parties are warmly welcomed throughout the region, with attractions experienced in handling groups of every kind. Discounted admissions, joint ticket schemes, accessible facilities and tailored group packages help make itinerary planning refreshingly straightforward.

Powderham Castle, overlooking the Exe Estuary just outside Exeter, combines six centuries of history with one of the county’s most picturesque settings. Still home to the Earl, it manages to feel both grand and deeply lived in. www.powderham.co.uk Travel itself becomes part of the pleasure in Devon. e South Devon Railway offers one of the great nostalgic journeys of the West Country, steam trains hugging the River Dart between Buckfastleigh and Totnes while passengers settle into vintage carriages watching woodland, riverbanks and rolling countryside dri past at reassuringly civilised speed. www.southdevonrailway.co.uk Seaton Tramway provides a rather different charm altogether. Narrowgauge heritage trams glide gently through the Axe Valley and nature reserves alive with birdlife, carrying visitors towards the Jurassic Coast UNESCO World Heritage Site. Open-top trams in summer and enclosed saloons during cooler months make it a wonderfully adaptable attraction for groups year-round. www.tram.co.uk Out on the water, Stuart Line Cruises reveal yet another side of Devon. Cruises along the River Exe and Jurassic Coast offer opportunities to spot seabirds, seals and dramatic cliff formations while commentary dris gently across the deck. ere is something deeply soothing about viewing Devon from the water, preferably while holding tea and pretending briefly that deadlines no longer exist. www.stuartlinecruises.co.uk

One of Devon’s greatest strengths is the extraordinary variety packed into a manageable area. Steam railways, castles, museums, gardens, zoos, theme parks, cruises and stately homes all sit comfortably alongside one another. One day can involve prehistoric caves and historic harbours, the next elegant gardens and nostalgic tram rides beside the estuary. History lies everywhere here. It rises unexpectedly from wooded valleys, peers out from castle walls and lingers in fishing ports where life still follows rhythms established generations ago. Killerton, cared for by the National Trust, remains one of Devon’s great estates, where elegant gardens and rolling parkland invite visitors to slow their pace entirely. www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/devon/killerton 44

Museums here tend to avoid stuffiness too. Exeter’s Royal Albert Memorial Museum combines Devon history with fascinating global collections, while Plymouth’s award-winning e Box blends art, culture and archives in a thoroughly modern and engaging way. www.rammuseum.org.uk | www.theboxplymouth.com Torquay Museum meanwhile ranges from local explorers to Egyptology, proving once again that Devon quietly refuses to limit itself. Elsewhere, nostalgia becomes part of the entertainment. World of Country Life in Exmouth combines farm park fun with recreated Victorian streets, vintage vehicles and working

machinery that trigger waves of affectionate recognition among visitors of a certain age. e Hall of Transport, featuring classic vehicles from productions such as Downton Abbey and Mr Selfridge, remains particularly popular. www.worldofcountrylife.co.uk Torbay alone could comfortably occupy visitors for several days. Kents Cavern, one of Britain’s oldest prehistoric homes, takes groups deep underground into cave systems once inhabited by early humans, cave bears and hyenas. www.kents-cavern.co.uk Nearby Torre Abbey combines eight centuries of history with flourishing gardens and art collections, while Agatha Christie’s connection to Torquay continues to attract literary visitors from around the world. Greenway House, Christie’s beloved holiday retreat overlooking the River Dart, offers groups the chance to step directly into the world of the famous author.

North Devon carries a slightly different atmosphere altogether. Wilder perhaps. More rugged around the edges. RHS Garden Rosemoor flourishes beautifully throughout every season, from colourful summer borders to magical winter illuminations during its popular Christmas Glow events. www.rhs.org.uk/gardens/ rosemoor

Some of Devon’s most rewarding attractions remain entirely free to enter. House of Marbles combines museums, live glassblowing demonstrations and playful family-friendly exhibits with a pleasing sense of eccentricity.

Dartington Crystal offers something increasingly rare: the chance to watch genuine crasmanship unfold before your eyes. As the UK’s last remaining glass factory, it allows visitors to observe skilled glassmakers transforming molten glass into elegant finished pieces before inevitably wandering into the shop and suddenly convincing themselves they require crystal glasses aer all. www.visitdartington.co.uk

Close by, Babbacombe Model Village remains gloriously charming. Tiny streets, miniature scenes and mischievous details unfold across beautifully landscaped gardens with an attention to detail that rewards patient wandering. www.model-village.co.uk

Clovelly remains one of Devon’s most unforgettable villages. Its steep cobbled street tumbles dramatically towards the harbour, donkeys and sledges replacing cars in scenes that appear almost untouched by modernity. Visitors descend slowly towards the sea, pausing constantly for photographs and increasingly inventive excuses to stop walking downhill. www.clovelly.co.uk

Nearby Bygones recreates Victorian Britain with such enthusiasm that visitors oen lose track of time entirely. Life-size streets, wartime displays, vintage amusements and nostalgic collections combine to create a wonderfully immersive experience. www.bygones.co.uk

At Quince Honey Farm, millions of bees work industriously behind glass while visitors discover the curious fascination of honey production, beeswax candles and beautifully landscaped nectar gardens. Educational, certainly, but also unexpectedly calming. www.quincehoneyfarm.co.uk

House of Marbles

e National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth brings visitors face-to-face with sharks, rays and thousands of marine creatures within Britain’s national aquarium. Conservation remains central to the experience without ever losing sight of simple wonder. www.national-aquarium.co.uk Paignton Zoo stretches across 80 acres of landscaped grounds and houses more than 2,000 animals alongside important conservation projects. Wide pathways and accessible layouts make it particularly suitable for mixed-age groups and educational visits alike. www.paigntonzoo.org.uk

www.houseofmarbles.com e Donkey Sanctuary near Sidmouth offers one of the county’s gentlest experiences, where hundreds of donkeys graze peacefully against sweeping coastal views. Prebooked groups benefit from menus, guided tours and ample coach parking, making it particularly popular with organisers. www.thedonkeysanctuary.org. uk/visit-us/sidmouth Buckfast Abbey remains deeply restorative in a completely different way. Set within a wooded valley beside the River Dart, the Benedictine monastery welcomes visitors into an atmosphere of calm increasingly rare in modern life. e gardens are immaculate, the abbey magnificent and the entire setting encourages people to lower their voices instinctively. www.buckfast.org.uk Animal and wildlife attractions continue to play a major role in Devon’s appeal. 46

Natural attractions flourish throughout the county too. Canonteign Falls offers lakeside walks, gardens and the highest waterfall in Dartmoor National Park, while Becky Falls combines ancient woodland with cascading water and some of the cleanest air imaginable. Both provide visitors with the increasingly unfamiliar experience of genuine quiet. www.canonteignfalls.co.uk | www.beckyfalls.com For families and mixed-age groups, Devon’s theme parks continue to evolve impressively. Crealy eme Park and Resort combines rollercoasters, indoor attractions and family rides with enough variety to satisfy everyone from toddlers to thrill-seekers. Woodlands Family eme Park offers rides, adventure play and extensive indoor facilities, while e Big Sheep and e Milky Way blend humour, family entertainment and outright chaos in the most enjoyable way possible. Watermouth Family

Attraction & Castle, meanwhile wraps rides and attractions inside an actual castle because Devon sees absolutely no reason why a family attraction should not also include battlements. Food inevitably forms part of any Devon experience too. Fresh seafood arrives daily along the coast, particularly around Brixham Fish Market where the day’s catch still defines the rhythm of the harbour. Fish and chips eaten beside the sea remain one of life’s simplest pleasures, while cream teas continue to inspire fierce and entirely unresolved debates regarding whether cream or jam should go first. And then there are the smaller moments visitors remember long aerwards. Watching mist dri across Dartmoor in the early morning. Sitting quietly beside Brixham harbour listening to ropes creak soly against fishing boats. A steam whistle echoing through the valley. Sunlight suddenly breaking across the sea aer rain. Devon understands something many destinations forget. Visitors do not simply want attractions. ey want atmosphere. ey want places that feel lived in rather than manufactured. ey want experiences that unfold naturally rather than being aggressively sold to them. Perhaps that explains why people return year aer year. Devon never appears desperate for attention. It simply carries on being beautiful, welcoming and quietly restorative in its own unmistakable way.
