INSIDE THAILAND’S THRIVING CANNABIS INDUSTRY WORDS: MARY BROWN PHOTOS COURTESY: BEACH SAMUI We all remember the movies like Brokedown Palace highlighting how serious drug offenses in Thailand were until recently. It’s amazing how, what used to be punishable by death is now an open market polar opposite to just a few years ago. As the global perception of cannabis continues to shift, Thailand has emerged as a progressive player in the cannabis industry. With a rich history of cannabis use, the country has taken significant steps towards

embracing the plant’s potential, both medicinally and economically. But what’s really happening in 2023? This summer, Cannabis Talk 101 made the trip over to Bangkok and Koh Samui with our international development liaison, Mary Szomjassy to talk with local industry players, both big and small about how things have evolved since she was there consulting for their recreational legalization initiative in 2020. It’s been a fast paced, politically

cannabistalkmagazine.com // issue 1

driven journey filled with many twists and turns and certainly more to come. It started in 2018, when Thailand became the first Southeast Asian nation to legalize medical cannabis. The Thai Food and Drug Administration (FDA) allowed patients suffering from qualifying conditions, such as chronic pain, epilepsy, and multiple sclerosis, access to medical cannabis through licensed clinics and hospitals. This fostered change in public perception and acceptance.

The only problem, is that there was limited supply of high quality products and formualtions. Additionally, as in many countries, even the medical professionals didn’t understand how to implement protocols with the plant. Fast forward to 2023 where there is a cannabis shop on every other corner and very few abide by the below .2% THC rule. Full legalization has created a wide gray area for all to enter, but product is still limited in relation to demand. It’s obvious

that there is a strong US influence as one can easily find strains like Wedding Cake, Gorilla Glue, and Cherry Pie in almost any store. Open containers of weed allow customers to smell the goods first, and you can even smoke right on site in many places after purchasing. Some owners will even supply you with a rig to use or share a toke with you. It’s a far cry from US retail shops. What’s more, is the abundance of restaurants attached to shops that

serve infused food. Many allow patrons to light up while waiting for their meal and getting lost in picturesque views. This relaxed environment has attracted both local and international investors, bolstering Thailand’s reputation as a cannabis-friendly destination. It has hosted cannabis enthusiasts and entrepreneurs from around the world creating cannabis-themed tours, hotels, wellness retreats, and educational programs. All which have contributed to the country ’s tourism revenue with strong foundations. One of the best examples of cannabis tourism done right, and the newest member of the Cannabis Talk family is Bryan Lunt. He is a resident of 20 years and owner/operator of Thailand’s first licensed cannabis hotel The Beach Samui, Sabai Sabai. Bryan has taken the concept of cannabis hospitality to a whole new level with cannabis room service, infused gourmet meals and curated cannabis spa offerings for his guests. Nestled in the traditional fishing village of Thong Krut on the island of Koh Samui, his all-suite boutique hotel is like nothing you’ ve ever seen in the cannabis world. The Beach has become a hub for industry executives, global politicians and local cannabis enthusiasts to gather, network and most importantly relax in an upscale environment. Together our partnership will bring you the best of international business events, conferences and education. There is no better place to do business than in paradise, so that’s where

you can find us this year!

In 2024 Thailand will continue to emerge as a trailblazer in the cannabis industry, capitalizing on the plant’s medicinal potential and economic opportunities. The country ’s progressive approach to cannabis has not only improved patient care but has also stimulated economic growth, garnering universal attention. With ongoing research and development, Thailand is poised to continue leading the way in cannabis science, further solidifying its position as a regional leader for the industry. Neighboring countries are watching closely as they plan their entry into the green rush as well so we can expect rapid expansion in all areas of cannabis legalization. The best is yet to come!

WELCOME TO THAILAND

THERE ARE NO GROW SHOPS ON THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON WORDS/PHOTOS: STAFF

Many people think the next frontier in the Greenrush is Thailand. They may be right, but like the old time prospectors they should be prepared to survive in rugged conditions. During the 19th century goldrush the people who made the sure money were the ones selling the picks and shovels. That store does not exist in Thailand..If you want to chase the green dream here you need to have patience and creativity and a sense of humor helps. It is a 1 hour drive each way to the hardware store and they often don’t have what you seek. Importing or buying online is a complete crap shoot and when you actually open the box it is often a shocking surprise - not in a good way. Customs hassles and import duties are also real issues. Many skilled growers have already tried and failed here because they just can’t procure what they need.

I sold everything I had of value and raised some more from friends and family and arrived with my business partner in June, 2022. we partnered with a Thai mother and son team who had obtained the fist license for cultivation in the state of Chonburi. We have just completed construction of a 7000 SF state-of-the-art cultivation facility. We also have a license and additional land for an outdoor crop. . The dream is now a reality as TBM Farm is producing our first crop of Oasis Cannabis.

soon as it is allowed we will obtain a license for extraction / manufacturing. We are also GACP (Thailand equivalent of GMP) certified. It has been quite an adventure for the past year and so far the roller coaster has only cleared the first big hill. Looking forward to see where this ride takes us. The goldrush analogy is very apt here in The Kingdom of Thailand - for now. It has definitely been the wild west for cannabis here since 2022 when it was decriminalized. Regulations are coming and that is good for those of us who did it right and obtained the licenses. We are fully licensed for cultivation, retail, export, and more. As

HIDDEN VALLEY GENETICS CULTIVATING THE FUTURE OF CANNABIS IN THAILAND WORDS/PHOTOS: STAFF

CEO, Jordan Herring, a USA Federally Licensed Seed Breeder and Geneticist with 22 years of experience in the industry. Over those years his experience breeding cannabis for the research and development of cannabinoids like THC, CBD, and CBG, led him to amass an impressive library of world class genetics. Amid his journey in cannabis Jordan pursued his career and love for the sport of Muay Thai. That love for the sport led him here to Thailand in 2007, 2008, and 2010 where he competed and coached. Now, he is delighted to share his knowledge of seed breeding and genetics with the

people of Thailand, just as they shared their knowledge of Muay Thai with him. Jordans dream is to leverage Hidden Valley ’s unique expertise to make meaningful contributions to the genetic preservation and diversity of Thailand’s cannabis market. This includes harnessing and bringing back to prominence the Thai landrace genetics that have been hidden from the world after nearly a century of prohibition. By doing so, they hope to aid doctors and scientists in their search for effective therapies and medical applications. To achieve this

ambitious mission, Jordan collaborates closely with top scientists, doctors, universities, and cultivation teams. Though leading the charge, he didn’t venture into this domain alone. His ensemble includes a seasoned pair of executives, COO/ Director of Cultivation, William Youngblood and CTO/Director of Engineering, Alyn Penners from California. Where design meets innovation their synergy plays a vital role to the company ’s leading role. Their efforts extend to a team of 10

dedicated Thai professionals using their experience to continually set standards and move the mission forward, leaving their mark in Thailand’s storied cannabis history. This team is making a meaningful impact on the cannabis industry in Thailand. Their unwavering commitment to quality is the cornerstone of what will maintain their role as leading genetic suppliers.

DOCTORS PUSHING BOUNDARIES BEYOND MEDICAL CANNABIS WORDS: STAFF PHOTOS: KASSY AGREGADO

DR. CHALMERS is a prominent neurological chiropractor who has gained attention for his comprehensive therapies and alternative approach to treatment, reaching far beyond traditional care. As a best selling author and an outspoken public speaker, Dr. Chalmer ’s passion is heard loud and clear to audiences all around the world. We had a chance to sit down with him to discuss his work with physicians, philosophies on holistic wellness, self care, and his stance against outdated medical therapies to find out what he is doing to educate both patients and practitioners alike. “Wellness by definition is quality of life over time; we want to feel as good as we can for as long as we can”. Dr. Matt Chalmers Dr. Chalmers has garnered a loyal following of patients who believe in the effectiveness of his treatments. Some have even claimed that he has changed their lives forever. In his book, “The Pillars of Wellness,” he addresses the complex landscape of wellbeing and the

verticals we need to focus on to obtain long-term health. “Fixing our body chemistry is the only way to achieve this”, he says. His holistic-based approach aims to identify and treat the source of health issues first and foremost. When asked to elaborate, he explained that “one health problem can present with a plethora of symptoms so it is important to find and fix the source of the problem. Most other symptoms will diminish as a result.”

address issues out of order.” The easiest area to address is food choice, he says. “Chemicals that go in your mouth are the same ones that either run, or ruin your body”. Dr. Chalmers walks the walk with a dedicated nutrition plan himself and never deviates from keeping it on the forefront in his daily life choices. “It’s a mindset, we need to be aware that gut health is related to brain health. It can lead to chronic fatigue that ruins the quality of life”.

In his book, he also writes about fueling the body physically, mentally, and spiritually to achieve balance. When asked for specific examples on exactly how someone may do this, he noted that “high quality sleep may be the number one factor in beginning to take control in personal wellbeing”. Nutritional balance, hormone control, psychotherapy and physical exercise ranked in the top five as well. “One of the biggest problems I see though, is that often people may work on one or a few of these, but without guidance they miss a key step or

In our conversation, he highlighted the importance of considering the mindbody connection when treating pain, injuries, and chronic conditions. “Mental fortitude is critical in every aspect of healing”. It’s not as easy as just telling yourself to be healthier though. The first step is up to the individual to take personal responsibility, “and that is 100% mandatory; if you don’t take an active role, it’s not going to happen. Period.” Each patient that he sees has a different set of needs so rather than provide a set standardized plan, Dr. Chalmers considers all of

cannabistalkmagazine.com // issue 31

the factors in a person’s life from environmental to cultural in his care plans. “For me it’s easy. We meet you where you are. It’s a personal journey. I’m not here to write your story, I’m just here to add value where I can”. He believes that success is also communal. “We are social creatures, and the journey is better together. Finding groups to share your journey is critical to finding long term quality of life”. Sometimes people need a bit of extra assistance and that is where his newest projects are really exciting for him. Dr. Chalmers is currently focusing on the innovative application of ketamineassisted psychotherapy (KAP) as a main component of his treatment methodology. He is incorporating KAP as a part of his protocols to enhance the therapeutic process, and is opening clinics all across the United States. Ketamine therapy involves the administration of a controlled dose of ketamine in a therapeutic setting. Paired with psychotherapy sessions to create a relaxed and introspective state, KAP

allows individuals to explore their thoughts, emotions, and experiences more deeply. This heightened state of consciousness can facilitate breakthroughs, insights, and healing. For him personally, helping people is what drives these new ventures. Exploring new options for patients helps add to his own “spiritual balance sheet”. Dr. Chalmers says that having experienced the trials of personal injury himself gives him deep empathy for what patients go through. He believes firmly that ketamine therapy can help with the mental struggles that are comorbid to many illnesses. By working together, he wants to help people “slow down the clock of chronic illness, but it’s really hard to turn it back, so now is the time to start.” You can hear Dr. Chalmers speak about these philosophies and more on various platforms including his own podcast, Cannabis Talk 101 and the renowned Ted Talk series. We are proud to consider him a team member and part of the Cannabis Talk family!

CANNABIS AROUND THE WORLD AN INSIGHT TO THE GLOBAL MARKETPLACE WORDS: MARY SZOMJASSY IN THE EVER-EVOLVING landscape of the global cannabis industry, Cannabis Talk 101 has forged impactful partnerships that have played a pivotal role in our significant growth and transformation in recent years. As various countries adopt diverse approaches to cannabis culture, legalization and regulation, the global relationships held between Cannabis Talk 101 and our partnerships have positioned us to explore a myriad of opportunities for expansion across the world. Here, we delve into the dynamic cannabis scenes in some of the most prominent countries, such as Brazil, Japan, Thailand, Australia, and the EU, shedding light on their legislative variations, market potential, and cultural attitudes towards cannabis. These insights provide valuable considerations as you strategically plan your next steps in this globally interconnected industry. Brazil

Brazil has a complex and evolving cannabis landscape. While recreational cannabis remains illegal, the country has made significant strides in medical cannabis legalization. In 2019, Brazil’s health regulatory agency, ANVISA, approved regulations for the sale of medical cannabis products in pharmacies. However, the cultivation of cannabis for medical purposes is still heavily regulated, limiting the domestic production and supply chain. Brazil’s large population and growing demand for medical cannabis present a significant market potential for international cannabis companies. There are limited public events here, but this year for the first time ever, CannabisExpo Brazil opened its doors for newcomers to learn about opportunities in the market with an opportunity to check out the expo in 2024.

JAPAN Although Japan has one of the strictest cannabis policies globally their acceptance of minor 1 Cannabinoids, like CBD and CBG, are rapidly growing. Both recreational and medical cannabis are illegal, and possession or cultivation can result in severe penalties. However, there has been a recent shift in attitudes towards medical cannabis, with the government approving clinical trials for certain cannabis derived medications. Various conferences are being held all over Japan with CBD as the highlight. CBD products are legally sold through Amazon marketplace and Rakuten which offers brands who have formulations that fall under compliance, a strong opportunity to enter early. In October 2023, Japan held its second ever CBD Journey and CannaCon expo in Shibuya, Tokyo. Our intimate relationship with CBD companies in Japan offers many opportunities to activate in this

market and we are proud to have partner representation this year! THAILAND Thailand has emerged as a progressive player in the cannabis industry. In 2018, the country became the first in Southeast Asia to legalize medical cannabis. The government has since implemented a comprehensive regulatory framework, allowing for the cultivation, production, and distribution of medical products. This being said, the term “ medical” covers a lot of territory and one can find a cannabis shop on every corner. Upon our travels there this summer, we were able to connect with multiple manufacturers and processors as well as cannabis tourism companies instrumental in placing American brands in the country. If you’re considering a trip to Thailand, we recommend aligning your plans with the Asian International Hemp Expo, the country ’s premier annual hemp conference.

This event is an excellent opportunity to explore the latest developments in the hemp industry, network with industry leaders, and gain valuable insights. And keep an eye out for exciting news: in Q1 2024, Cannabis Talk Magazine will be launching its much-anticipated Thailand Edition, bringing you exclusive content and updates from this vibrant cannabis landscape. AUSTRALIA Australia has adopted a regulated approach towards cannabis, legalizing medical cannabis in 2016. The country has a well-established medical cannabis market with a robust regulatory framework governing cultivation, production, and distribution. Australia’s progressive stance on medical cannabis has attracted significant investment and international partnerships. However, recreational cannabis remains illegal, and there are strict regulations

surrounding the use and access to medical cannabis products. Despite these limitations, Australia’s cannabis industry continues to grow, driven by increasing patient demand and a supportive regulatory environment. The yearly Australian Medical Cannabis Symposium is a great way to learn more about the emerging opportunities in Australia. SPAIN Cannabis tourism has become increasingly popular in Spain, particularly in cities like Barcelona and Madrid. Many “cannabis clubs” offer a wide variety of cannabis strains, edibles, and other cannabis-infused products, providing tourists with a diverse and enjoyable experience. However, it is important to note that cannabis tourism in Spain operates within a legal gray area, as the sale and cultivation of cannabis are still illegal. However, Spain’s cannabis policy on decriminalization

of personal use and the establishment of cannabis clubs, has created a unique environment for cannabis enthusiasts. A great introduction to the opportunities is through Spannabis, the largest cannabis event in Europe held annually. NETHERLANDS In Amsterdam, known for its lenient cannabis policies, recent changes have impacted the local cannabis industry. Amsterdam, renowned for its open-access coffee shops, implemented the “Weed Pass” system in 2012. This initiative initially restricted access to Dutch residents to combat drug tourism but faced opposition due to its adverse impact on tourism and the economy. Consequently, some coffee shops closed as a result of proximity restrictions around schools. Despite these changes, Amsterdam continues to draw cannabis enthusiasts, offering events like the Amsterdam High

Times Cannabis Cup, a thriving hub for cannabis culture and opportunity, while also exploring a “cannabis club” model, akin to Spain, to facilitate regulated cannabis distribution. A GLOBAL IMPACT Cannabis Talk 101 is expanding globally, and we invite you to come with us on this journey. We aim to learn more as well as educate all people and races on the benefits of this amazing plant. Understanding cultural differences in both social and business environments creates sustainable partnerships in the future. CANINES AND CANNABIS EDUCATE BEFORE YOU MEDICATE! WORDS/PHOTOS COURTESY: STAFF The science of cannabis and its effects on our pet’s brains is a growing topic of interest lately. Because researchers are interested too, we are learning quite a bit about how animals process it, and the findings may surprise you. We all know Cannabis contains compounds called cannabinoids and tons of other good stuff. The most well-known being tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). These compounds interact with the endocannabinoid system (ECS) in both humans and animals, including dogs. The ECS plays a crucial role in regulating various physiological processes, such as mood, appetite, pain sensation, and immune response. When dogs consume cannabis, THC binds to the cannabinoid receptors in their brains, leading to psychoactive effects. Because they have more receptors that bind to THC in their brains as well as their immune system, salivary glands and skin, they are extremely sensitive. Interaction can result in altered behavior, impaired coordination, and even toxicity in some cases. Lots of people report using full spectrum to

treat illnesses in their fur babies, but this can be super dangerous, so check with your vet before playing doctor and definitely keep recreational cannabis products out of reach of pets to prevent accidental ingestion. On the other hand, CBD has gained attention for its potential therapeutic benefits in animals as well as humans. CBD does not produce the same psychoactive effects as THC and may have antiinflammatory, analgesic, and anxiolytic properties. Some pet owners have turned to CBD products to help manage their dogs’ anxiety, pain, and seizures. However, more research is needed to fully understand the effects of CBD on dogs’ brains and to determine safe and effective dosages. It is crucial to note that dogs may react differently to cannabis compared to the way you do. “Start low and go slow” is a great motto to follow. Additionally, the size and weight of a dog can influence how they metabolize and process cannabis compounds. Do your research, talk to trusted resources, and use only products that are labeled with high CBD and low or non-detected THC. Show them

THE INSIDER INVESTOR &

FINANCIAL FRIDAYS

TONY K. AKA @THEINSIDERINVESTOR HAS JOINED BLUE & JOE GRANDE TO START “FINANCIAL FRIDAYS” ON THE CT101 NETWORK. WE SAT DOWN WITH TONY TO GET ON THE INSIDE! WORDS: STAFF PHOTOS: CONNOR VIVALDI

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO START FINANCIAL FRIDAYS ON THE CT101 NETWORK? First off I wanted to thank you and the entire CT101 family who has made me feel at home. There’s lots of history here at CT101 and I don’t take it for granted that I’ve been brought on board to host my own show. The CT101 audience is a highly educated and loyal audience, so I know the bar is set high and I intend on delivering. After over a 20 year career on WallStreet, my world got flipped upside down when I lost everything to my former business partner who defrauded investors for over 12 million dollars. I helped put him in prison, and dealt with the trauma of that for years after. I walked away from WallStreet and took a life time ban so that I could share my story from stage and on platforms like CT101. From that point on my mission has been to expose the dirty side, of being on the inside. WHAT CAN LISTENERS EXPECT FROM THE SHOW? I think wealth can be defined and acquired in different manners. For

example one of my Rules of Money is that with out your health you won’t have wealth. You can’t be truly wealthy if you’re not healthy. That’s why I invited one of my good friends and my own Doc, Dr. Chalmers to be one of my first guests and regular guest of the show. One of the biggest pieces of advice I give to anyone is to get right with your body and mental health. As you get older in life those are the things that money can no longer buy or fix. My hope for the show is that I bring on compelling guests that can leave the audience more empowered and wealthier in knowledge about the things that matter. The 3 F’s Family. Fitness. Finances. OVERCOMING PERSONAL TRAUMA AND FINANCIAL SETBACK IS NO JOKE! WHAT MESSAGE DO YOU HOPE YOUR SHOW CONVEYS TO ANYONE WHO MAY BE FACING SIMILAR CHALLENGES. That’s tough to answer in such a limited format. First make sure that you keep good people around you who won’t allow you to quit. Mental health is a topic that is very close to my heart. There were moments where

cannabistalkmagazine.com // issue 21

I was in a very dark place and having very destructive behavior. One of my first mentors Ryan Stewman had a personal development networking mastermind I became a part of called Apex. I’m still a member today. That single decision changed the trajectory of my life forever, and quite frankly probably saved my life. I just made the decision one day that I was going to become the best version of me that I could be. The first step was to surround myself with winners who would hold me accountable. From that day I put in the work. It’s not overnight. But no success ever is. WE SEE YOU TRAVELING A LOT AND THROWING REALLY COOL EVENTS. VEGAS, UTAH, FLORIDA, CANCUN, AND WE EVEN SAW HAWAII? NOW WE ARE HEARING YOU’RE INVOLVED WITH F1 IN VEGAS? WHAT’S THAT ALL ABOUT AND HOW CAN WE JOIN YOU AT EVENTS LIKE THAT? I travel a lot and speak at different business, personal development, and private events. The really fun ones you’re referring to on socials are probably events I’ve thrown for my iNSIDER iNVESTORS CLUB members. That’s a private members club I

started about 3 years ago. I like to say that we do really cool shit, with really good people, and make money together while we are at it. We don’t sell anything. We help each other level up and buy cool assets together. That club is closed to new members right now but we are taking a waiting list for when we open membership back up. The best way to get on the iNSIDE with me is to just follow my socials. I post all my events and drop fun nuggets there as well. Feel free to DM me as well. WE ARE EXCITED TO HEAR ALL THE NEW EPISODES. ANYTHING YOU WANT TO ADD? YES! Please support the CT101 network. Go to YouTube and look up CannabisTalk101 and hit Subscribe. Follow me on ig @theinsiderinvestor FB @TonyKassaei and if you see me at a live event including MJ Biz please come say hi!
