Support mechanisms

Based on the normative framework described earlier, a rather wide range of support mechanisms for human rights defenders have come into existence over the years. Here, we have chosen to focus on three relevant UN mechanisms, the existing guidelines on support to human rights defenders, and available support from a selection of specialised organisations. It is important to note that there are also national and regional support mechanisms available, such as human rights commissions and institutions, and various organisations with relevant expertise. Furthermore, it is important that you identify and establish contact with domestic NGOs, networks and alliances working on support to human rights defenders, as well as support groups and individuals in your area who can be of help. We encourage all our grantees to obtain information and knowledge about the various support mechanisms in your region, country and local context and to actively use them, as they are there for you.
