WELCOME TO THE COLLEGE OF THE AR TS First, I’d like to start off by saying something I have looked forward to saying for a very long time: “Welcome back!” Welcome back to live performances and in-person exhibitions; welcome back to the thrill of sitting in a darkened theatre or concert hall, waiting with palpable anticipation as performers fill the stage; and welcome back to the very personal experience of being in the presence of an artwork that moves you or challenges your expectations. We’ve missed you.

While away from campus, our students continued to create, learn, rehearse, and perform – sometimes in the tiny boxes we’ve all grown accustom to viewing from home – as they prepared for the moment they would once again feel stage lights shining on them. As you can imagine, they are more than ready to perform in front of a live audience! This season, we are offering both on-campus and live streaming options for many of our Department of Theatre & Dance and School of Music performances to accommodate a variety of patrons. With enhancements to our HVAC and air filtration systems, we are also able to provide students with the full breadth of our first-rate performance facilities and numerous art galleries where they perfect their craft daily.

In returning to campus, we can once again deliver the full scope of immersive academic experiences and opportunities for cross-disciplinary collaboration that make our college a living laboratory for the arts. Here, success is measured in lines of dialogue, sheets of music, and slabs of clay as our students, faculty, and staff work together to present concerts, exhibitions, lectures, workshops, and performances to 40,000+ visitors annually.

Director’s Notes While on a camping trip during the lowest point in the pandemic, I bought myself a t-shirt.

It says “Whatever doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. Except bears. Bears will kill you.”

Devised theatre starts with an idea. Then, if you’re willing to step into the unknown, and fortunate enough to find the company of others who are also willing to take a risk, you begin to put that idea into motion. It’s scary as hell. And thrilling.

During the last 18 months, I thought a lot about how much we were going to need the theatre to help us emerge from so much isolation and fear. Even as this show opens, many of my friends, colleagues and students are struggling to adapt to our new normal.

But most of us are desperate to experience the theatre again, whether onstage, backstage or in the audience.

As is a hallmark of devised theatre, much of what you are about to experience was written or conceived by students, actors, designers, stage managers, guest artists, faculty and staff. In an environment where all ideas are heard, appreciated and attempted, something ineffable, and eminently theatrical, is achieved. All of us emerge from this experience as better artists.

It’s been such a salve to collaborate again, especially with so many new colleagues and students. And as the Department of Theatre and Dance welcomes its newest BFA concentration in Devised Performance/Physical Theatre, it’s fitting that this project continues a special relationship with the School of Music. We look forward to more interdisciplinary projects across the College and throughout the University community.

A B O U T T H E C R E AT I V E T E A M DAVID NEVELL DIRECTOR David Nevell enjoys an eclectic career as an actor, educator, and specialist in voice, dialects, text and movement.

David’s resume includes voice, dialect and text coaching for Fox Television, Walt Disney Entertainment, South Coast Repertory, Pasadena Playhouse, Cornerstone Theatre Company, Laguna Playhouse, REDCAT, Toi Whakaari and PCPA. He is Senior Editor of the International Dialects of English Archive (IDEA), and a certified Associate Teacher of Fitzmaurice Voicework.

As an actor, David’s credits include productions with South Coast Repertory, Laguna Playhouse, The Colony Theatre, International City Theatre, Ensemble Theatre Company, Pasadena Playhouse, Huntington Theatre Company, Pittsburgh Public Theatre, the Los Angeles and Utah Shakespeare Festivals, Geva Theatre, San Jose Rep, and Pacific Conservatory Theatre/PCPA. Since 2004, he has served as Professor and Head of Voice/ Movement in the Department of Theatre and Dance at Cal State Fullerton, where he teaches courses in Voice and Movement, Devised/Physical Theatre, and Theatre and Issues in Society. PAMELA MADSEN MUSIC DIRECTOR Pamela Madsen is a composer, performer, theorist and curator of new music. From massive landscape inspired projects, intimate chamber music creations to multi-media opera collaborations and immersive deep listening works her work focuses on image, music, text and the environment. With a Ph.D. in Music Composition from UCSD, Mellon Foundation Doctoral Research Award at Yale University, Post-Doctoral researcher at IRCAM, Paris, and Deep Listening Certificate with Pauline Oliveros, her works have been commissioned and premiered world-wide. Selected as an Alpert Award Panelist, Creative Capital artist “on the radar” with awards from National Endowment for the Arts, New Music USA, Meet the Composer, American Scandinavian Foundation, Fellowships from MacDowell, UCross, Women’s International Studies Center, Santa Fe, and Wurlitzer Foundation Residency, Taos, she is a frequent guest lecturer, composer-performerimproviser and at festivals and universities. She is curator of the Annual New Music Festival, Director of the New Music Ensemble and InterArts Collaborative Projects at Cal State Fullerton where she is Professor of Music Composition, and Music Theory. A B O U T T H E C R E AT I V E T E A M ERIC DRIES MUSIC DIRECTOR Eric Dries is a pianist, improviser, composer and educator who explores the innovative fields between traditional jazz, free improvisation, and contemporary classical music. His work explores a wide range of stylistic practices from jazz and contemporary music worlds in diverse performance situations. Dr. Dries holds a Ph.D. in Composition and M.A. in Music Theory from University of California San Diego, where he studied with Rand Steiger, George Lewis, Anthony Davis, Roger Reynolds and Brian Ferneyhough, with post-doctoral studies and research in Music Technology at IRCAM. He studied jazz improvisation and composition with bassist Richard Davis and saxophonist Les Thimmig at University of Wisconsin Madison, where he received his BM in Music Composition, studying with Stephen Dembski. Dries is Co-Director and Conductor of the CSUF New Music Ensemble, Lecturer in Music composition, theory, jazz, and music technology at California State University Fullerton School of Music.

NATHAN DRYDEN AERIAL COORDINATOR Nathan Dryden is a movement artist, teacher, and performer with his MFA in Dance from the University of Utah. His work wanders through contemporary dance, improvisation, theatre, and aerialdance. Dryden is a certified instructor of the Skinner Releasing Technique and currently works with Stephanie Skura in the Open Source Forms teacher training program that integrates SRT with creative process and other somatic modalities. He teaches as a guest artist and adjunct professor at universities across the U.S.A. and internationally.

This production is entered in the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival (KCACTF). The aims of this national theater education program are to identify and promote quality in college level theater production. To this end, each production entered is eligible for a response by a regional KCACTF representative, and selected students and faculty are invited to participate in KCACTF programs involving scholarships, internships, grants and awards for actors, directors, dramaturgs, playwrights, designers, stage managers and critics at both the regional and national levels.

Productions entered on the Participating level are eligible for invitation to the KCACTF regional festival and may also be considered for national awards recognizing outstanding achievement in production, design, direction and performance.

Last year more than 1,300 productions were entered in the KCACTF involving more than 200,000 students nationwide. By entering this production, our theater department is sharing in the KCACTF goals to recognize, reward, and celebrate the exemplary work produced in college and university theaters across the nation.

SEPTEMBER 18 – DECEMBER 18, 2021 Kim Abeles: Smog Collectors, 1987-2020, features over thirty years of her artistic investigation related to the environmental impact caused by airborne detritus. Kim Abeles is an interdisciplinary artist known for her community-based projects that explore biography, geography and environment. She is the recipient of several fellowships and awards including the Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship and the National Endowment for the Arts. She is professor emerita at California State University, Northridge where she taught public art and public practice from 1998-2009. She received her MFA at University of California, Irvine, and lives and works in Los Angeles.
