Welcome to the Spring 2024 Performing Arts Season at Cal State Fullerton’s College of the Arts. Whether you are a first-time or long-time patron, a friend, or parent to one of our exceptional students, thank you for joining us. Your support makes all the difference to their success.

I am pleased to present another semester of programming powered by the incredible gifts of our Art, Dance, Music, and Theatre students. This spring, the School of Music starts the season with a trio of concerts February 16–18 by artists-in-residence Talich Quartet; faculty artist Damon Zick and his Quarteto Nuevo featuring fellow faculty artist Bill Cunliffe; and University Symphony Orchestra. In May, University Symphony Orchestra and Symphonic Chorus will close the concert season with a performance of Mozart’s emotionally charged “Requiem.” Begovich Gallery presents the Begovich Visual Arts Lecture Series with visiting artists’ talks throughout the semester, including multidisciplinary artist Hings Lim on February 22, whose work will also be exhibited at Grand Central Art Center. The Department of Theatre and Dance begins their season in March with “Marisol,” a darkly comedic fantasy where the title character must find hope in a post-apocalyptic Brooklyn where angels are taking up arms and coffee is extinct. Hilarious, multiple Tony award-winning modern musical send-up “Urinetown” closes the theatre season just as CSUF’s dancers and choreographers take to the stage for “Spring Dance Theatre.”

When our students demonstrate their talents on stage and in the studio, their creative energy is undeniable, but the sacrifice and struggle it took to get there is often less perceptible. We can’t see the hours spent creating, the days of rehearsals, and the years of practice. For many students, the sparks of innovation and artistry that drove them to pursue the arts are often diminished by the high cost of an education. The Dean’s Fund for Excellence provides support for students in need through scholarships, artist residencies, and other financial assistance, ensuring them the opportunity to thrive in the arts. If you believe in their sparks of brilliance, please consider a donation of any amount to the Dean’s Fund for Excellence.

Thank you again for joining us this season and for championing the arts in higher education. I hope to see you at one of the college’s many performances and events this spring.

Sincerely,

ABOUT THE GRADUATE ASSISTANT CONDUCTORS

Johnston Nguyen is a passionate music educator, conductor, and oboist. He is currently a graduate student at California State University, Fullerton, where he studies wind conducting with Dr. Dustin Barr and oboe with Dr. Rong-Huey Liu. Nguyen is the inaugural recipient of the Alan V. Stang, PhD Endowed Scholarship for Instrumental Wind Conducting. Prior to graduate studies at CSUF, Nguyen was the Band Director at Palm Desert Charter Middle School in Palm Desert, CA where he taught Marching Band, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band, Concert Band, Beginning Band, and Music Appreciation. At PDCMS, he led students through numerous festivals, competitions, and community engagement events. In 2020, he presented along with Dr. Marc Dickey on “Demystifying Oboe and Bassoon Octave Keys” at the annual Southern California Band and Orchestra Association Conference.

Johnston completed his Bachelor of Arts in Music Education, also at California State University, Fullerton. As an undergraduate, he played in the Wind Symphony, Symphonic Winds, University Band, Symphony Orchestra, various chamber ensembles and received the Willard and Virginia Dickey Instrumental Music Education Student Teacher Scholarship.

Daniel Castellanos is a graduate assistant at California State University, Fullerton. He is currently studying wind conducting under the guidance of Dr. Dustin Barr and previously studied saxophone with Dr. John Hallberg. Castellanos earned his Bachelor of Arts in Music Education and a teaching credential from CSUF before starting his graduate studies. During his undergraduate studies, he played saxophone with the nationally recognized CSUF University Wind Symphony as an ensemble player and soloist.

After earning his bachelor's degree, Daniel taught at Day Creek Intermediate School, John L. Golden Elementary, and C.P. Lightfoot Elementary. While teaching in the Etiwanda School District, the Day Creek Intermediate Ensembles received Unanimous Superior ratings from the Southern California Band and Orchestra Association. Moreover, musicians from the Day Creek Bands were selected to perform with the SCSBOA All-Southern and CBDA All-State honor groups.

Daniel teaches applied saxophone lessons at Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Eastvale, California. He is passionate about helping young musicians succeed and strongly advocates for music education in public schools.

ABOUT THE CONDUCTOR

Dustin Barr is Director of Wind Studies and Associate Professor of Music at California State University, Fullerton where he actively manages all aspects of the university’s comprehensive band program, conducts the Wind Symphony and University Band, oversees the graduate wind conducting program, and teaches courses in conducting and music education. Prior experiences include appointments as Assistant Director of Bands at Michigan State University, Director of Bands at Mt. San Antonio College, and Assistant Director of Bands at Esperanza High School in Anaheim, California.

Dustin’s research includes working extensively with theatre director Jerald Schwiebert on the melding of performance theory with various movement theories and disciplines to establish innovative pedagogical approaches to teaching conducting. Their co-authored text, Expressive Conducting: Movement and Performance Theory for Conductors, was published by Routledge in 2018. This work has made Barr a highly regarded pedagogue in the field of conducting. He has given numerous masterclasses throughout the USA and in Spain. Furthermore, his research on Scandinavian music for chamber wind ensembles has produced published performance editions of Asger Lund Christiansen’s Octet, op. 43 and Svend Schultz’s Divertimento for Wind Octet.

Dustin is a recipient of numerous accolades for his conducting and scholarly work. Signal honors include the CSUF Wind Symphony’s invitations to perform at the 2019 National Conference of the College Band Directors National Association and the 2023 California All State Music Education Conference. The Wind Symphony’s 2022 album, Effigy, is another noteworthy achievement. This album features the music of composer Brian Baumbusch and was the result of innovative musical practices and remote recording projects undertaken during the Covid-19 pandemic. Barr has been a guest conductor of prominent ensembles like the United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own,” is a winner of the American Prize’s Ernst Bacon Award for the Performance of American Music, a finalist for the American Prize in conducting, a Rackham Merit Fellow at the University of Michigan, and he was recognized as one of the nation’s preeminent young conductors as part of the 2010 National Band Association’s Young Conductor Mentor Project.

Dustin holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in conducting from the University of Michigan. He received his Master of Music degree and Bachelor of Music degree from California State University, Fullerton. His principal conducting mentors include Michael Haithcock and Mitchell Fennell.

ABOUT THE CONDUCTOR

Gregory Xavier Whitmore is Conductor of the University Symphonic Winds at California State University Fullerton (CSUF). In addition to this artistic responsibility, he is an Assistant Professor of Instrumental Music Education and serves as Area Coordinator of the CSUF Music Education Department. He is also in his 10th season as Music Director of the Pacific Symphony Youth Wind Ensemble, one of only a handful of youth wind ensembles connected to a group one professional symphony orchestra (Pacific Symphony) in the United States.

Gregg’s previous appointments in higher education include tenure as Director of Bands at Irvine Valley College (Irvine, CA), Mt. San Antonio College (Walnut, CA), and College of the Desert (Palm Desert, CA). Prior to his work in higher education, he spent 13 years as Director of Bands at Cathedral City High School (Cathedral City, CA).

A proud Midwesterner and native of Ann Arbor, Michigan, Gregg earned his bachelor’s degree in instrumental music education from The University of Michigan School of Music, Theater and Dance. While a student at Michigan, he performed in the University of Michigan Symphony and Concert Bands; and led the University of Michigan Marching Band as “Michigan’s Man Up Front” - Drum Major - from 1999 to 2001 – becoming the second Black Drum Major in the history of the University of Michigan. He received his master's degree in music with an emphasis in wind conducting from California State University Fullerton. He holds a master’s degree, and a doctorate in music and music education from Columbia University (Teachers College) in the city of New York.

A Second Place Winner of the 2017 American Prize in Conducting, Gregg has conducted ensembles around the world in such notable concert venues as The Golden Hall of The Musikverein (Vienna), The Wiener Konzerthaus (Vienna), The MuTh (Vienna), Renee and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall (Costa Mesa), Symphony Hall (Chicago), The Kennedy Center (Washington, D.C.), Carnegie Hall (New York City), Walt Disney Concert Hall (Los Angeles), Meng Hall (Fullerton, California), Holy Trinity Church (Stratford, England), St. John’s Smith Square (London), Chateau Vaux le Vicomte (Paris), and Heidelberg Castle (Germany). Under his direction, the Cathedral City High School Symphony Band was selected to perform as the showcase ensemble during the 2008 California Band Directors Association Annual Convention. He is a conductor for the World Strides Honors Performance Series.

With a research interest in music educator values as operationalized into pedagogy, in addition to investigating the concert band as an artistic medium, Gregg has presented research at music education symposia in the United States and abroad. His research has been published in Visions of Research in Music Education. He has been recognized in four editions of Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers and he has been included in the 2005/2006 Edition of the National Honor Roll’s Outstanding American Teachers. He was selected to represent the State of California by School Band and Orchestra Magazine in the 2008 edition of “50 Band Directors Who Make a Difference”.

Gregg belongs to professional organizations that include College Band Directors National Association, Kappa Kappa Psi Honorary Band Fraternity, Alpha Delta Phi Fraternity, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity, Pi Kappa Lambda Honor Society, The National Association for Music Education, Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association, and the California Music Educators Association.

The SCHOOL OF MUSIC was among the first academic programs offered when Cal State Fullerton opened its main campus in 1960. From the very beginning, the emphasis on musical performance in an academically stimulating environment has been a cornerstone of the School of Music.

The members of the CSUF Wind Symphony and CSUF Symphonic Winds study and perform music as part of an overall university curriculum that prepares musicians for careers in the performing arts, education and business. With a strong emphasis on musical performance, the students in both of these ensembles are also part of an ongoing effort to perpetuate and maintain a great American cultural tradition.

Our purpose in studying and performing this music is to develop an appreciation for the music of our time, to further the tradition of excellence in wind performance at Cal State Fullerton as well as the traditions of the American concert band, and to provide an educational foundation from which our students and audience can contribute to the cultural landscape of society.
