WELCOME TO THE COLLEGE OF THE AR TS First, I’d like to start off by saying something I have looked forward to saying for a very long time: “Welcome back!” Welcome back to live performances and in-person exhibitions; welcome back to the thrill of sitting in a darkened theatre or concert hall, waiting with palpable anticipation as performers fill the stage; and welcome back to the very personal experience of being in the presence of an artwork that moves you or challenges your expectations. We’ve missed you.

While away from campus, our students continued to create, learn, rehearse, and perform – sometimes in the tiny boxes we’ve all grown accustom to viewing from home – as they prepared for the moment they would once again feel stage lights shining on them. As you can imagine, they are more than ready to perform in front of a live audience! This season, we are offering both on-campus and live streaming options for many of our Department of Theatre & Dance and School of Music performances to accommodate a variety of patrons. With enhancements to our HVAC and air filtration systems, we are also able to provide students with the full breadth of our first-rate performance facilities and numerous art galleries where they perfect their craft daily.

In returning to campus, we can once again deliver the full scope of immersive academic experiences and opportunities for cross-disciplinary collaboration that make our college a living laboratory for the arts. Here, success is measured in lines of dialogue, sheets of music, and slabs of clay as our students, faculty, and staff work together to present concerts, exhibitions, lectures, workshops, and performances to 40,000+ visitors annually.

ABOUT THE GUEST ARTIST

JOHAN SMITH Winner of the prestigious Guitar Foundation of America (GFA) Competition in 2019 and defined as the “Classical Guitar Revelation 2017” by the french magazine “Guitar Classique,” Johan Smith has been invited to perform in renowned festivals, as concert and soloist, with orchestras such as the Budapest Symphony Orchestra, the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra, and the Verbier Festival Orchestra. He released his new album with Naxos in 2020, and is currently preparing for a tour that will see him perform in the United States, Canada, Mexico, China, and at Carnegie Hall in New York.

Johan’s particular interest in contemporary music has led him to collaborate with several composers, including Josquin Schwizgebel and Arnaud Fillion who dedicated him his “Concerto for Guitar and Orchestra.”

Born in 1990 in Geneva, Johan started the guitar with teacher Marie-Claire Pignolo and obtained a Bachelor in 2015, then a “Master of Arts in Instrumental Pedagogy” in 2017 at the University of Music of Lausanne, in the class of the Brazilian guitarist Dagoberto Linhares. In addition to his activity as a guitar teacher at the Conservatory of Morges (COV), he also obtained in 2019 the most important academic title in the field of musical performance in Switzerland: the “Master of Arts specializing in Music Performance Soloist,” awarded by the highest grade and the Special Prize, Max D. Jost.

In a completely different approach, Johan is the founder, composer, performer, and graphic designer in the extreme metal band “Stortregn,” with whom he has already recorded four albums and toured the world since 2005.
