Welcome to the College of the Arts fall 2023 performing and visual arts season. I am so proud of the collaborative efforts our faculty, staff, and students have undertaken to produce such a wide array of programming across four disciplines. It takes months, sometimes years, of work to create what you are about to enjoy – a commitment matched only by our collective passion for the arts.

Each year, the college presents a wide variety of programming that reflects our diverse perspectives. In Theatre, the season begins with a stage adaptation of the hauntingly emotional novel and film “Let the Right One In,” which reveals both the darkest impulses of humanity and our universal desire for connection. Acclaimed 1975 hit musical “A Chorus Line” gets a fresh update by Marty Austin Lamar and Courtney Ozovek that will immerse audiences in the audition process of a Broadway show. In the School of Music, the Fullerton Jazz Orchestra and University Symphony Orchestra perform together in the first ever “Fullerton Pops!” Also in November, Begovich Gallery explores the midcentury architecture and aesthetics of our original Visual Arts Complex in the exhibition “PAST FORWARD.” While Begovich Gallery looks back at our historical beginnings, we continue to push toward the future as the Visual Arts Modernization Project (VA MOD) rapidly transforms the campus.

Our complex’s two new buildings are fully framed, architectural details have been installed, and extensive interior renovations on two existing buildings are nearing completion. These changes bring years of dreaming and planning into sharp focus, but there is so much work yet to be done. From exterior paint to integrate our past and present buildings, to restoring the beloved “Water Wall” sculpture, to new software that will power the next generation of digital artists, there are many ways you can make a difference. The ways in which our students will benefit from the modernization project are as limitless as their imaginations, and as assured as our commitment to their success. ABOUT THE GUEST ARTIST

D

avid eJesus

David DeJesus is a multiple Grammy Award winning saxophonist and bandleader from Brooklyn, NY who has established himself as a key player in numerous bands in various genres. In Jazz, David has performed with the Village Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, the Mingus Big Band, the Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All-Stars, and Jimmy Heath’s Big Band along with many others.

In Latin Jazz and Salsa, David has shared the stage with Ruben Blades, Larry Harlow, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Arturo O’Farrill and Tito Rodriguez Jr. Currently, David is the Director of the Birdland Big Band, a member of the Grammy nominated Bobby Sanabria Big Band, and Musical Director for legendary Ron Carter’s Great Big Band. On top of his busy performing career, David has long been involved in education. Having taught at major conservatories including Manhattan School of Music, New York University, and the New School, David is currently a Full-Time Faculty member and Head of Jazz Studies at Purchase College.

ABOUT THE DIRECTORS

Bill Cunliffe Cal State Fullerton Professor of Music Bill Cunliffe is a jazz pianist, composer, Grammy Award-winning arranger and record producer. He is known for blending jazz with classical and pop genres based on a deep knowledge of, and a lively curiosity about, musical styles. As a solo artist and bandleader, he has more than a dozen albums to his name and has appeared on numerous recordings. He grew up in Andover, Massachusetts and began piano lessons with his mother at the age of eight. At 20, having been captivated by the music of Oscar Peterson, he changed his focus from classical music to jazz. As an undergraduate at Duke University, he studied with jazz legend Mary Lou Williams.

At the Eastman School of Music, he studied jazz piano with Bill Dobbins and arranging with Rayburn Wright. In 1989, he won the Thelonious Monk International Piano Competition.

Cunliffe began his career as pianist and arranger with the Buddy Rich Big Band and worked with Frank Sinatra, Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard, Benny Golson and James Moody. Later he toured and recorded with the Clayton Brothers and the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, drummer Joe La Barbera, trumpeter Terell Stafford and jazz flutist Holly Hofmann.

Cunliffe’s score for Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s 2011 documentary “On the Shoulders of Giants” received two NAACP nominations for Outstanding Album and Outstanding Group or Duo Collaboration. In 2009, he was awarded a Grammy for Best Instrumental Arrangement and has received four other Grammy nominations including two for Best Instrumental Composition. The Los Angeles Jazz Society honored Cunliffe in 2010 with its Composer/Arranger Award.

In addition to teaching full time, Cunliffe is a longtime faculty member of the Skidmore Jazz Institute and the Vail Jazz Workshop.

Teryn Carter Deriving influences from jazz artists such as Sarah Vaughan, Carmen McRae, and Ella Fitzgerald, Teryn Carter has developed her own unique sound which she enjoys sharing in both her performing and teaching.

She performs regularly with her big band (The Teryn Ré Big Band), small band, and duo in local L.A. jazz clubs such as The Baked Potato, the Blue Whale, and O.C. venues such as Campus Jax. Recently she has performed regularly at the new club, the Jazz Lounge, in San Diego, as well as the 1905 in Portland, OR. She has released several albums, including her self-titled “The Teryn Ré Big Band” album, a chord-less trio album, and several singer/songwriter albums.

Although Teryn loves performing, she loves teaching at the college level and encouraging students to pursue their own sound. She currently teaches at Fullerton College, Chapman University, Cal State Fullerton, and El Camino College. Other schools include Azusa Pacific University, Golden West College, Cerritos College, Citrus College, and the Orange County School of the Arts. She directs multiple vocal jazz ensembles, and teaches applied vocal jazz lessons at various schools.
