WELCOME TO THE COLLEGE OF THE AR TS First, I’d like to start off by saying something I have looked forward to saying for a very long time: “Welcome back!” Welcome back to live performances and in-person exhibitions; welcome back to the thrill of sitting in a darkened theatre or concert hall, waiting with palpable anticipation as performers fill the stage; and welcome back to the very personal experience of being in the presence of an artwork that moves you or challenges your expectations. We’ve missed you.

While away from campus, our students continued to create, learn, rehearse, and perform – sometimes in the tiny boxes we’ve all grown accustom to viewing from home – as they prepared for the moment they would once again feel stage lights shining on them. As you can imagine, they are more than ready to perform in front of a live audience! This season, we are offering both on-campus and live streaming options for many of our Department of Theatre & Dance and School of Music performances to accommodate a variety of patrons. With enhancements to our HVAC and air filtration systems, we are also able to provide students with the full breadth of our first-rate performance facilities and numerous art galleries where they perfect their craft daily.

In returning to campus, we can once again deliver the full scope of immersive academic experiences and opportunities for cross-disciplinary collaboration that make our college a living laboratory for the arts. Here, success is measured in lines of dialogue, sheets of music, and slabs of clay as our students, faculty, and staff work together to present concerts, exhibitions, lectures, workshops, and performances to 40,000+ visitors annually.

ABOUT THE FACULTY ARTIST

RONG-HUEY LIU “A phenomenal, expressive oboist,” Taiwanese American, Rong-Huey Liu is one of Southern California’s most active oboists. She holds principal positions in the Long Beach Symphony, Los Angeles Ballet Orchestra, Reno Chamber Orchestra, Fresno Philharmonic, and Riverside Philharmonic.

Liu is in high demand as a multi-faceted soloist.

She was invited to present a solo recital at the First International Double Reed Society Virtual Conference.

She has performed the oboe concertos of Bach, Corigliano, Daugherty, Ferrer Ferran, Handel, Kalliwoda, Lebrun, Marcello, Mozart, Walter Saul, and Óscar Navarro. Her performance on Saul’s Kiev 2014: Rhapsody for Oboe and Orchestra has garnered critical acclaim for “sublime playing and crisp performance, technically adept but filled with quiet perseverance and passion.” In a last-minute step-in concerto appearance with the Reno Chamber Orchestra, she was praised by critics for her “captivating performance.” Her Lebrun Oboe Concerto performance with Long Beach Symphony earned review of “radiant tone easily filled the cavernous Terrace Theater, and she played with consummate grace and musicality. She put on an awesome technical display...”

A versatile chamber/recital artist, Liu has been invited to perform at Sundays’ Live, Grand Performance, Ojai Summer Music Festival, Bruman Chamber Music Summer Festival, Nevada Chamber Music Festival, Southwest Music Festival/ International New Music Festival, Chamber Music Unbound, and Classics at The Merc; and as faculty/performance artist at Cactus Pear Music Festival, Chamber Music Unbound, Fresno Opera and Orchestra Summer Academy, International Chamber Orchestra of Puerto Rico, and Northeastern Pennsylvania Chamber Music Society. San Antonio critics wrote her performance of Mozart Quartet in the Cactus Pear Music Festival with “sweetness shaped by a sense of crisp articulation” and Daugherty’s “Firecracker” with “razzle dazzle piece...the audience was thrilled.”

Liu has won first place in the Taiwan National Oboe Competition, and the Harvard Musical Association, as well as performance awards from the Taiwan National Symphony Orchestra, Taiwanese College Music Competition, Boston Foundation for Chinese Performing Arts, and Spotlight Awards from the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association.

Liu holds Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the Manhattan School of Music, and Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the Thornton School of Music, University of Southern California (with an award from Phi Beta Kappa and a membership in Pi Kappa Lambda). She is the oboe professor at California State University Fullerton School of Music, La Sierra University, and Riverside City College.

ABOUT THE FACULTY ARTIST

WILLIAM MAY William May has been a member of the LA Opera Orchestra since 2008. He was appointed principal bassoon in 2011, a position he has held with New West Symphony and the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music in Santa Cruz. He has enjoyed playing with several orchestras across Southern California, including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Pacific Symphony, San Diego Symphony and Santa Barbara Symphony among others. He is an active recording musician for the Motion Picture and TV industry. Summer festivals have taken him to Siena, Italy, and to Japan for the Pacific Music Festival.

May studied with Arthur Weisberg at Indiana University and furthered his training with Richard Beene at the Colburn School in Los Angeles. A passionate teacher, he is a faculty member at California State University, Fullerton and maintains a private teaching studio.

May enjoys spending his free time outdoors and traveling, and is a certified yoga instructor.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

VIVIAN I-MIAO LIU Vivian I-Miao Liu is a versatile collaborative pianist.

She has worked with the Long Beach Opera, Opera Idaho, Opera Pacific, Classical Singers Association, National Association of Teachers of Singing, Songfest, Boys Choir of Harlem, Calico Winds, California Quartet, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Pacific Symphony, Redlands Bowl, Riverside Philharmonic, Southwest Regional Tuba Euphonium Conference, International Double Reed Society Conference, Pokorny Low Brass Seminar, and National YoungArts Foundation.

Liu has collaborated with musicians from the Boston Symphony, Chicago Symphony, Los Angeles Opera Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Pacific Symphony, Porto Symphony Orchestra, San Diego Symphony, San Francisco Symphony, Shanghai Philharmonic, and Vienna Philharmonic, as well as singers from the Baltimore Opera, Bayerische Staatsoper, Los Angeles Opera, Metropolitan Opera, New York City Opera, and Washington Opera. She has performed internationally in Taiwan, Russia, Austria and the U.S., and has appeared on the radio and television in Taiwan and US. Liu received a DMA in keyboard collaborative arts from the University of Southern California under Dr. Alan Smith and Pro Kevin Fitz Gerald. She is the principal rehearsal pianist with the National Children’s Chorus, performs often with the LA Opera’s Education Program, and works as an adjunct faculty coaching singers and instrumentalists at Azusa Pacific University.
