WELCOME Hello, and welcome to the Department of Theatre & Dance virtual presentation of The Book of Unknown Americans. We are so excited to share this performance with you! First, I want to thank all of the students, faculty, and staff who have

worked tirelessly to make this possible. I’ve personally witnessed our college rise to the challenges of these times to reach far above expectations. Our performing arts students continue to thrive, delivering some of the most heartfelt and thoughtprovoking performances I’ve seen. This semester has demonstrated one thing loud and clear: the arts are active, vibrant, and resilient here at Cal State Fullerton.

Just as the arts continue to adapt and evolve, so have our students. These Titans of the Arts – unwavering in their passion and commitment to their craft – are the reason we do what we do as educators, administrators, and staff. I look forward to seeing theatre, dance, and music students rehearsing throughout the performing arts building, and visual arts students creating in the breezeways and art courtyard once again. It’s so quiet here without them! Until we see each other again face-toface, stay safe, stay strong, and keep creating. We hope you enjoy the show!

Director’s Note “At first it’s not possible to describe anything beyond a wish or a desire. That’s how it begins, making a film, writing a book, painting a picture, composing a tune, generally creating something. You have a wish. You wish that something might exist, and often, you work on it until it does. You want to give something to the world, something truer, more beautiful, more painstaking, more serviceable, or simply something other than what already exists. And right at the start, simultaneous with the wish, you imagine what that ‘something other’ might be like, or at least you see something flash by. And then you set off in the direction of the flash, and you hope you don’t lose your orientation, or forget the wish.” -- Wim Wenders

What you are about to see is the culmination of an intense period of creativity for the students who were cast in this adaptation of Cristina Henriquez’ novel, The Book of Unknown Americans. Little did they know, when they auditioned for the project, that they would be contributing much more than their acting skills. In fact, by necessity, they would expand beyond the familiar art of making live theatre, and acquire new, lifelong skills as they imagined, wrote, filmed, voiced and edited their own short film. The actors embraced the challenge to create a 5-minute film, from their character’s perspective, unfettered by the need to include all the events of the novel. The rest was up for discussion, brainstorming, imagination and resilience. They were relieved that they wouldn’t need to include everything that happens in the novel – that the film they created would be a new piece of art, inspired by the novel. We hope that the films you are about to see offer a new perspective – literally an additional way of seeing – the characters and events depicted in Henriquez’ revelatory novel.

Remarkably, each of the students worked in isolation from the rest of the cast, participating in individual Zoom sessions with me once or twice a week, along

with generous support from the dedicated staff in the Department of Theatre and Dance, who supplied them with the costumes, props, wigs, lights, tripods, sage advice, or anything else they required to realize their vision. Many of these students, now actor-filmmakers, were generously supported with time, patience and hard work by their friends and families, as they learned by doing, sometimes having to shoot scenes in the middle of the night, or by taking over the kitchen for several days, in order to make their vision a reality. As always, these students thrive because of the support they receive from everyone else in their lives.

About the Director David Nevell enjoys an eclectic career as an actor, educator, and specialist in voice, dialects, text and movement. David’s extensive resume includes voice, dialect and text coaching for Fox Television, Walt Disney Entertainment, South Coast Repertory, Pasadena Playhouse, Cornerstone Theatre Company, Laguna Playhouse, REDCAT, Toi Whakaari, and PCPA. He is Senior Editor of the International Dialects of English Archive (IDEA), and a certified Associate Teacher of Fitzmaurice Voicework.

As an actor, David’s credits include productions with South Coast Repertory, Laguna Playhouse, The Colony Theatre, International City Theatre, Ensemble Theatre Company, Pasadena Playhouse, Huntington Theatre Company, Pittsburgh Public Theatre, the Los Angeles and Utah Shakespeare Festivals, Geva Theatre, San Jose Rep, and Pacific Conservatory Theatre/PCPA. Since 2004, he has served as Professor and Head of Voice/ Movement in the Department of Theatre and Dance at Cal State Fullerton, where he teaches courses in Voice/Movement, Devised Theatre, Physical Theatre and Theatre & Issues in Society.

The Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival™ 52, part of the Rubenstein Arts Access Program, is generously funded by David and Alice Rubenstein.

Education and related artistic programs are made possible through the generosity of the National Committee for the Performing Arts and the President’s Advisory Committee on the Arts.

This production is entered in the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival (KCACTF). The aims of this national theater education program are to identify and promote quality in college level theater production. To this end, each production entered is eligible for a response by a regional KCACTF representative, and selected students and faculty are invited to participate in KCACTF programs involving scholarships, internships, grants and awards for actors, directors, dramaturgs, playwrights, designers, stage managers and critics at both the regional and national levels.

Productions entered on the Participating level are eligible for invitation to the KCACTF regional festival and may also be considered for national awards recognizing outstanding achievement in production, design, direction and performance.

Last year more than 1,300 productions were entered in the KCACTF involving more than 200,000 students nationwide. By entering this production, our theater department is sharing in the KCACTF goals to recognize, reward, and celebrate the exemplary work produced in college and university theaters across the nation.

WILLIAM CAMARGO: Origins & Displacements, Vols. 1 & 2 October 3 – December 31, 2020 This exhibition is an on-going body of work examining Orange County’s history through contemporary photographs, videos, and performance produced by artist William Camargo. On display outdoors at Grand Central Art Center and MUZEO Museum & Cultural Center due to ongoing Covid-19 safety protocols.
