LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Dear Readers, Thank you for picking up a copy of The Runner’s first issue of the semester. If you’ve read our newspaper in the past, you might notice something new about this issue.

The Runner aims to inform our campus and create dialogue by sharing the diverse voices at California State University, Bakersfield, where more than half of the student population identifies as Hispanic or Latino.

Part of our mission is to make our content accessible to those that we serve. With that in mind, we created El Veloz, The Runner’s SpanishLanguage section of the newspaper.

El Veloz began as an idea that stemmed from meeting fellow staff members whom I identified and shared an importance for representation with.

So, I would like to extend that sense of community to all of you.

Vernon B. Harper Jr. named interim president of CSUB

By Lea-Marie Rathmann News Reporter The California State University Interim Chancellor Jolene Koester appointed Vernon B. Harper Jr. as the Interim President of the California State University, Bakersfield on Sept. 11.

President Lynnette Zelezny will retire at the end of the year, and Dr. Harper will take over on Dec. 31. He will serve for approximately 12 months while the CSU Board of Trustees searches for the university’s next regularly appointed president.

Harper currently serves as CSUB’s Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. His primary responsibilities include enrollment, retention, recruitment, graduation initiatives, partnerships and projects to promote innovation.

Under his leadership, the university has achieved high graduation and retention rates, diversity, equity, and inclusion for all CSUB members, and an increase in enrollment, according to a news release from the CSU Chancellor’s office.

“I’m honored. I’ve been a part of this community for eight years now. It is a wonderful place and a wonderful experience to be part of this community,” said Harper.

Harper said that all leadership creates opportunities to be concerned about challenges, but he has no fears when considering his new position.

Harper said he has many goals as the Interim President, but the students’ success will always be his focus. According to Harper, he wants to increase the graduation rate and ensure that the university provides the highest quality of education.

Other goals he mentioned include developing new academic programs and making CSUB one of the best campuses for innovation and energy.

Harper’s beginnings at CSUB were in 2016 when he served as associate vice president for Academic Affairs and dean of Academic Programs.

According to a CSUB campus news release, Zelezny values his skills.

Ludyaram Ortega Magaña, a graduate student in Public Administration at CSUB and the new graduate student lead for the basic needs department, said she is also confident that Dr. Harper will continue Zelezny’s work in fantastically.

“Dr. Vernon Harper has been a pupil under the tremendous leadership of President Lynette Zelezny,” Magaña said.

Magaña also said she is positive that Harper has great academic and interpersonal knowledge, and that students will learn and thrive under his leadership.

CSU Board of Trustees pass 6% annual tuition increase

The California State University Board of Trustees voted 15-5 to approve an annual, multi-year, tuition increase on Sept. 13, affecting students who attend each of the 23 CSUs, including California State University, Bakersfield.

This proposal will start in Fall 2024.

The vote to approve this proposal means tuition will now increase by $342 for undergraduates, $432 for graduates, and $402 for credential students in 2024-25. The 6% increase will continue annually through 2028-29.

According to CSU Trustees, this tuition proposal is the best solution for a more stable tuition rate.

“If we approve this item, it means that students and their families will have the information that they need in order to be knowledgeable consumers, that is, they will know how much they need to pay in tuition every semester, every year until they graduate successfully,” said Faculty Trustee Darlene Yee-Melichar.

Prior to the vote, many students across the CSU system attended the Board of Trustees meeting on Sept.

12 to give public comment, including Daisy Alamillo, CSUB ASI president and CEO. Alamillo asked the board to prolong the vote until November 2023 to examine the effects of the most vulnerable populations in the system.

“As a first-generation Latina student who belongs in the 40% that will be truly affected by this increase, I would say, ‘Please ensure that this is not just a modest request. Please ensure that you look at every single avenue except for raising tuition to students,’” said Alamillo during public comment.

According to Alamillo, while the proposal was announced during the summer, with the vote taking place two weeks into the semester, it is difficult to advocate and inform students when they are not on campus. Alamillo said prolonging the vote would have also allowed ASI to do more outreach to students.

Alamillo also said ASI held a meeting with Raji Kaur Brar, a CSU trustee and CSUB alumni, to voice their concerns with the tuition proposal. Brar is one of the 15 trustees who voted to pass the tuition increase.

According to Ryan Storm, CSU assistant vice chancellor for the system budget, 60% of the students are fully covered by non-loan aid, 18% are

The remaining 18% of students did not apply for aid, whom Storm said may be paying their tuition on their own.

“I have to take out loans subsidized and unsubsidized loans. I do receive the Pell Grant and Cal Grant, but it was only able to cover half this year. That’s why I’m taking out loans,” said Minaya Valentine, a third-year environmental research management student.

Valentine says she spends about $500 extra on textbooks, her parking permit, gas, and more, so this tuition increase will make her more financially vulnerable.

“I know students who apply for emergency grants, students who don’t receive any funding from parents, including myself, and having to navigate themselves already at the current tuition rate, it’s frustrating,” said Valentine.

Alamillo said ASI will try to fight for student issues on campus at a

systemwide level with the Cal State Student Association.

ASI also plans to educate students and ensure they have access to resources at CSUB, such as the Food Pantry, Edible Garden, Services for Students with Disabilities, and the MAGEC Center, to support those affected by the tuition proposal.

“Even as this tuition increase happens, you know it will be effective into Fall of 2024. So, this year we really try to ensure that students are educated on those resources and, hopefully, those resources will help them persevere here at their time at CSUB,” said Alamillo.

The tuition proposal will be under review every five years with the CSSA along with the board.

By Ruben Gladin Feature Writer Dozens of students made their way to the Mechanics Bank Convention Center, which hosted the annual College night on Sept. 11. Parents accompanied them in hopes to see what might be in store for their children’s future.

Before entering the arena, FAFSA and Student Aid booths handed out flyers, reminding students to prioritize applying for financial assistance. Guadalupe Moreno and Margaret Olaya, two Student Aid representatives, provided pamphlets and further information for students and parents.

“We keep encouraging students to fill out the application before the deadline for priority filing. We touch bases with counselors as well, to make sure there are postings and reps available for any questions anyone may have,” said Moreno.

Among the universities was an aviation school; California Aeronautical University boasted a flight simulator, enticing students to approach their booth.

An aeronautical school is an option for students who may be undecided about their studies.

“We are located here in Meadows Field Airport, Bakersfield, and have been offering courses since 2016 and offer degrees in aviation flying, aviation mechanics and a bachelor’s degree program in aviation training. We also encourage students to apply for financial aid as well. We have accelerated programs that can have students done in three years.

Review: Olivia Rodrigo mirrors universal feeling of womanhood Popstar Olivia Rodrigo creates music that resonates with young women who want to scream and dance in their bedroom at one in the morning. She has a way with words that makes every girl feel as if Rodrigo’s music was written personally for them.

Rodrigo draws from her life experience, lets them simmer in her mind, then releases the emotions and channels them through her music.

After blowing up on the internet at the age of 17, now 20-year-old Rodrigo from Temecula, CA, had to face not only the beginning years of womanhood but also this new idea of fame.

In an article for Vogue, “A New Decade, A New Album, A New Life, – Olivia Rodrigo’s Next Chapter,” author Jia Tolentino writes, “The new album is a time capsule, Rodrigo says, commemorating a moment that feels like it’s ‘about figuring stuff out, about failures and successes and making mistakes.’”

That is what makes Rodrigo’s music

so special and so popular. Her albums are like a girl’s personal diary, except with rhythm and a beat. Being a young woman comes with many new emotions, most of which are first experiences.

Her album begins with the song “All-American Bitch,” a pop punk song reflecting the need to suppress her emotions, saying, “I don’t get angry when I’m pissed / I’m the eternal optimist,” and later adding, “I scream inside to deal with it.”

This is a common idea all women face, thinking that we can’t verbally or physically express the way we feel so we’re not labeled as “crazy” or “over dramatic.” Maybe even an emotion that Rodrigo personally felt back in May of 2021 when “Sour” was first released, as she kept quiet when social media rumbled over possible exes that may have inspired the album.

Another song that has gained a lot of popularity on TikTok, is “Lacy,” a soft ballad in which Rodrigo sings, “smart and sexy Lacy,” a girl who wears ribbons in her hair with a lingering perfume smell. Lacy almost seems like a perfect person, they have something Rodrigo craves, whether that be beauty,

kindness or other characteristics. It’s the experience one has when you obsess over someone and compare yourself to them because you feel that whatever they have will make you better, even if that’s not true.

Rodrigo even writes some not so serious lyrics in another song called

Like, haven’t we all had that random crush on a barista that we end up fantasizing about for the rest of the week? How about that long-term crush we thought was the love of our lives that we later end up chuckling at?

Rodrigo manages to connect “Guts” to “Sour,” as they co-exist as sisters, both sharing one of the biggest changes in her life. “Sour” capturing moments before fame, and “Guts” capturing everything after. She manages to keep the same charm that made everyone fall in love with “Sour.” Using guitars, drums and chants to release the emotions piled up in our hearts and minds, then, using the piano in her ballads to help us ponder and reflect.

Sam Stahl from Woodbury University, nestled within Burbank, California, offered students the opportunity to pursue degrees with jobs in prosperous fields within the entertainment industry.

According to Stahl, Hollywood is a very popular area to work in for many graduates.

“We have four schools that we focus on: School of Business, Media Culture and Design, Architecture and Liberal Arts and Sciences. We hold workshops

in high schools throughout the state, and offer small class sizes, more teacher to student interaction and a high graduation rate,” said Stahl. A promise of more oneon-one time and high graduation rates may also convince students to apply.

Three sisters from BCHS and Highland High School listened intently to information from a Notre Dame Booth representative regarding scholarships and major programs Notre Dame had to offer.

When asked if they would apply to Notre Dame, Remy Amwyl, a Highland student, said, “Yes, we have been planning on going to college since before high school. My parents have been supportive of me furthering my education and would be fine with me relocating.” Many students receive unrelenting support from their parents, who want to see their child succeed.

This college night is no doubt the most successful one in years. There were many opportunities and different pathways for students and parents to consider. Hats off to the parents right beside their children this night, with hopes of a bright and successful future.

Opinion: Girl dinner and other girl trends signify new wave of feminism

“So, me and my best friend have been best friends since we were seven years old. She moved to a city that’s about two hours away from where I live, but we still remain in contact via social media, text, etc. now she seems to be avoiding me and I asked her what was wrong and she said “this friendship isn’t working out and I need space” and we have not talked in about four months. We are still friends on social media and we watch each other stories but we don’t like each other’s content. What should I do?”

Thanks for reaching out, for starters! I totally feel you, because I am in the same situation. My best friend of over 11 years and I got into a fight, and haven’t spoken since May. So, trust me when I say I totally empathize with you! I’ve had experiences with MANY people I have called a “best friend” or a “close friend,” and I have come to learn and realize a lot.

Many people believe that there are four waves of feminism, and that the fourth wave takes place in present day as a result of the #MeToo movement. Others believe that in modern times it is just a continuation of the third wave of feminism, which encompassed inclusivity and intersectionality, as well as “rebellion instead of reform,” according to Sarah Pruitt in “What Are the Four Waves of Feminism?”

Despite these contradictions, there may be a new wave of feminism that is in our midst, and it may be due to TikTok and “girl” trends, such as “girl dinner,” “girl bedroom,” and “girl math.”

The Second Sex by Simone de Beauvoir is a critical piece of feminist theory, where de Beauvoir accounts for all the inequalities that women face not only during her time period, but throughout history as well. “[T]he whole of feminine history has been man-made. Just as in America there is no Negro problem, but rather a white problem; just as anti-Semitism is not a Jewish problem, it is our problem; so the woman problem has always been a man problem,” said de Beauvoir.

She draws the comparison of women to other oppressed groups, such as Black people in America or the Jewish in Europe, pointing out that while these groups are oppressed just as women are, they are a minority and women

are not. Because of this, men and women need each other to coexist.

Furthermore, while women have had waves of feminism in order to speak out and fight against their inequality within society, de Beauvoir’s writing points out that African Americans and the Jewish are able to unify because of this discrimination and oppression.

This means they are able to connect within their culture and unify as a stronger group to fight for their cause.

Because women are not in this minority and instead are made up of such intersectionality, i.e. there are Jewish women, Black women, white women, etc., they do not have an overarching culture to connect and unify them as a group.

However, TikTok influencer Madison Wild, @madisonxwild, discusses in a video with over half a million views how she believes women are now able to unify in a way that they were not able to before.

“We realize that the whole, like ‘girl dinner’ trend, ‘girl bag,’ ‘girl fucking bathroom,’ ‘girl driving’… girl is being used as an adjective instead of a noun. And girl is completely different from feminine. We’ve developed an entirely new sense of identity for ourselves that is outside the framework of what is meant to be feminine,” said Wild.

A quote that a close friend reminded me of recently says, “Friends are there for a reason, a season, or a lifetime.”

Now, of course, this doesn’t apply to all friends, but your best friend potentially may have just been a part of your life for a reason, even though we think those best friends are there for a lifetime. One of the things that I’ve learned is that some friends are just in your life for a short time, whether it’s to teach you something or give you something you need.

For all you know, she may be going through something that you do not know about, so I recommend you give it time and see if she eventually reaches out to you to try to reconcile.

Though it is a hard pill for many of us to swallow, sometimes friendships end suddenly without reason or closure. It sounds like to me that you didn’t do anything wrong, so don’t beat yourself up. Know you did your best, and that you reached out to communicate with her.

However, you also need to know your worth, and should surround yourself with people that care about you and show that they care, which means communicating when things get tough. Take care of yourself and surround yourself with people that will care about you for a lifetime, but also don’t be afraid of those “reason” or “seasonal” friendships, as hard or heartbreaking as it may be when those end. By Jocelynn Landon Photographer California State University of Bakersfield has multiple traditions that they have kept up with over the course of the years. One of those traditions is the annual Rowdy Run that happens in the Fall semester.

Rowdy Run took place on Sept. 7 at the CSUB main soccer field. The Women’s soccer team played against Westmont College and lost the game with a score of 0-1.

Rowdy Run takes place every year to welcome the new class, meet new people, and show some Runner Pride for the CSUB Soccer team.

The cheerleaders, the band, the dance team, and the Road Runner mascot and spirt, all show up and give it their all in order to get the crowd excited and engaged.

First time freshmen have a chance to get an exclusive shirt that is unique to their class, as well as participate in their first annual Rowdy Run. Rowdy Run is an exciting run across the soccer field during half time.

In previous years, it was a slow jog, as

campus faculty and staff joined in.

This year, they changed it up by having an actual “unofficial competition” where students sprinted across the field to the finish line. Campus programming, CSUB alumni, Associated Student Inc., students, faculty, and staff, cheered on the runners who wanted to participate by creating a tunnel for them.

This annual Rowdy Run also brings in family, both near and far.

Family of Hildur Jonas, a CSUB student on the soccer team, came from Iceland to watch her play soccer for the first time this year at Rowdy Run. Rowdy Run creates a space where freshmen get to experience the Roadrunner life for the first time, students can participate in some friendly competition, alumni can reminisce on their first run, and the CSUB fans can support the soccer team by showing up and cheering them on.

Los estudiantes consideran altas vías de educación durante la Noche universitaria del Condado de Kern

Decenas de estudiantes asistieron al evento de Noche de Colegios en Mechanics Bank Center el 11 de septiembre. Padres también acompañaron a sus hijos para ver que opciones hay después de la escuela secundaria para sus hijos.

A la entrada había cabinas de la FAFSA, recordando a todos los estudiantes que aplicaran para asistencia escolar. Guadalupe Morena y Margaret Olaya estaban pasando folletos informativos.

“Queremos que los estudiantes llenen las formas temprano de FAFSA para que tengan primera prioridad procesando sus formas” dijo Moreno. “Estamos en contacto con los consejeros de secundaria, para dar información sobre las fechas importantes que deben de saber los estudiantes sobre FAFSA.” Entre la colección de los colegios y universidades, estaba la universidad de aviación llamada, California Aeronautical Universidad. Parte de su demostración era un simulador de vuelo, para que los estudiantes miren una de las maneras en que enseñan sus clases.

“Lacy.” Un dúo en el que Rodrigo Reseña: Olivia Rodrigo refleja el canta, “inteligente y sexy Lacy,” una chica que simboliza perfección en los sentimiento universal de feminidad ojos de Rodrigo. Lacy es la persona que

Cuando se les preguntó si van a aplicar a esta Universidad, dicen que si, que les gustaría ir. “Mis padres estarían orgullosos de mí, y me han apoyado desde que era chica para ir al colegio después de escuela secundaria” dijo Remy Amwyl, estudiante de Highland. “También están en favor de mudarme a otro estado para mis estudios escolares.”

Esta noche de colegio fue muy informativa y exitosa. No hay duda que cada estudiante se llevó a casa información valiosa que les ayudará en el futuro después de la escuela secundaria. Se les agradece mucho a los padres que estuvieron esta noche con sus hijos e hijas, apoyándolos y deseándoles un exitoso y brillante futuro.

La junta directiva de CSU aprueba un aumento anual de la matrícula del 6%

By Melissa Jorge, Reportera de Noticias and Haydee Barahona, Editora en Jefe de Publicaciones Traducido por Melisa Magaña La junta directiva de Las Universidades del Estado de California han votado 15-5 al aumento anual, por varios años de las matrículas empezando el 13 de Septiembre, esto afectará a los estudiantes que asisten a las 23 Universidades en el estado de California, incluyendo la Universidad Estatal de California, Bakersfield. Esta propuesta comenzará el semestre de otoño 2024.

La aprobación de este voto significa que las matrículas aumentaron $342 para los estudiantes universitarios, $432 para los graduados, y $402 para los estudiantes con credenciales en 2024-25. El aumento de 6% continuará aumentando hasta 2028-29.

De acuerdo a la Junta directiva de las CSU, esta propuesta del aumento de matrículas es la mejor solución para mantener una estabilidad en la tasa de matrículas.

“Si aprobamos esta propuesta, significa que los estudiantes y sus familias tendrán la información adecuada para ser consumidores con conocimiento, lo que quiere decir que, ellos sabrán cuánto será necesario

pagar cada semestre para ser inscritos, cada año hasta que se puedan graduar exitosamente,” dijo Darlene YeeMelichar, miembro de la junta directiva.

Previo a las votaciones, varios estudiantes a lo largo del sistema universitario de California asistieron a la junta directiva el 12 de septiembre, para dar sus comentarios públicos, incluyendo a Daisy Alamillo, presidenta y directora ejecutiva de ASI en CSUB. Alamillo le pregunto a la junta directiva que prolongaran las votaciones hasta Noviembre 2023 para examinar los efectos que pueda ocasionar a los más vulnerables en el sistema.

“Como una Latina de primera generación la cual pertenece al 40% que será realmente afectada por el incremento, yo diré, ‘Por favor, asegurense que esto no es una petición pequeña. Por favor, ustedes asegúrense que van a revisar cada aspecto del aumento de matrículas para los estudiantes,’” dijo Alamillo durante su comentario público.

De acuerdo a Alamillo, mientras la propuesta estaba siendo anunciada durante el verano, con el voto tomando lugar dos semanas comenzando el semestre, es difícil defender e informar a los estudiantes cuando no están presentes en el campo.

Alamillo dijo que prolongando las votaciones también ha permitido a ASI comunicarse con más estudiantes.

Brar es una de los 15 miembros de la junta directiva que votaron a favor del aumento de las matrículas.

De acuerdo al sustituyente del asistente del ministro en CSU Ryan Storm, 60% de los estudiantes son totalmente apoyados financieramente sin ningún préstamo, 18% son parcialmente apoyados financieramente sin préstamos, 4% son requeridos a pagar matrículas con préstamos. El 18% de los estudiantes restantes no aplicaron para ayudas financieras, las cuales Storm dijo tal vez están pagando por sus matrículas ellos solos.

“Yo tuve que pedir préstamos subvencionados y sin subsidios. Yo recibo becas, pero solo puedo cubrir la mitad del año. Es por eso que tuve que pedir préstamos,” dijo Minaya Valentine, estudiante de investigaciones ambientales en su tercer año.

Valentine dijo que gastó aproximadamente $500 en libros, el permiso para el estacionamiento, y más, este incremento de las matrículas la hará más vulnerable económicamente.

“Yo si conozco estudiantes que aplicaron para becas de emergencia, estudiantes que no reciben ningún apoyo

económico de sus padres, incluyéndome a mí, y tener que guiarse ellos solos durante estos incrementos de las matrículas, es frustrante,” dijo Valentine.

Alamillo dijo que ASI va a tratar de pelear por los problemas de los estudiantes en todo el sistema junto a la asociación de los estudiantes del estado de California, al igual que la despensa de alimentos, jardín comestible, servicio para los estudiantes con discapacidades, y el centro MAGEC, para apoyar a esos afectados por el incremento de las matrículas.

“Incluso cuando este aumento comience, tú ya sabes que comenzará en otoño de 2024. Así que, este año trataremos de asegurar que los estudiantes estén educados sobre estos servicios, y esperamos que estos servicios los ayuden a perseverar durante su tiempo aquí en CSUB,” dijo Alamillo.

Esta propuesta estará bajo revisión cada cinco años con la CSSA junto a la junta directiva.

The Runner tiene como objetivo informar a nuestro campus y crear un diálogo al compartir las diversas voces en la Universidad Estatal de California, Bakersfield, donde más de la mitad de los estudiantes se identifica como hispanohablante o latino.

Parte de nuestra misión es hacer que nuestro contenido sea accesible para aquellos a quienes servimos. Con eso en mente, creamos El Veloz, la sección en español del periódico The Runner.

El Veloz comenzó como una idea que surgió de conocer a otros miembros del personal con los que me identifiqué y compartí lo importante que es la representación. Por lo tanto, me gustaría extender ese sentido de comunidad a todos ustedes.

By Lea-Marie Rathmann News Reporter La canciller interina de la Universidad Estatal de California, Jolene Koester, designó a Vernon B. Harper Jr. como presidente interino de la Universidad Estatal de California, Bakersfield, el 11 de septiembre.

La Presidenta Lynnette Zelezny se retirará a fin de año, y el Dr. Harper asumirá el cargo el 31 de diciembre. Servirá durante aproximadamente 12 meses mientras la Junta de Síndicos de CSU busca al próximo presidente designado regularmente de la universidad.

Harper actualmente se desempeña como Rector y Vicepresidente de Asuntos Académicos de CSUB. Sus principales responsabilidades incluyen inscripción, retención, reclutamiento, iniciativas de graduación, asociaciones y proyectos para promover la innovación.

Bajo su liderazgo, la universidad ha logrado altas tasas de graduación y retención, diversidad, equidad e inclusión para todos los miembros de CSUB, y un aumento en la inscripción, según un comunicado de prensa de la oficina del rector de CSU. “Me siento honrado. He sido parte de esta comunidad durante ocho años. Es un lugar maravilloso y una experiencia maravillosa ser parte de esta comunidad," dijo Harper.

Harper dijo que todo liderazgo crea oportunidades para preocuparse por los desafíos, pero no tiene miedo al considerar su nueva posición.

De acuerdo con su lema, “Los corredores están listos,” dijo que confía en que CSUB superará cualquier desafío que se le presente.

Harper dijo que tiene muchas metas como presidente interino, pero el éxito de los estudiantes siempre será su enfoque. Según Harper, quiere aumentar la tasa de graduación y garantizar que la universidad brinde la más alta calidad de educación.
