Program Notes:
The impetus for The Coast in Winter, evolved from a presentation by band director, Melanie Brooks and her Building Bridges program. I had just finished a piece for piano and viola. Since the viola is excluded from wind band literature, it seemed like a perfect and sonically pleasing pairing. In late winter 2018, I took a weekend out to the Oregon coast. While I had no preconceived intention of composing about that landscape, my subconscious had other ideas. The skeleton of the piece arrived one afternoon a few weeks later. The piece rises and falls, and for me evokes both melancholy and joy. Whether it’s a walk on the cold and windy beach, watching waves crash against rocks, exploring icy caves along the shore, or curling up with a good book, the coast in winter is a special place.
