Liberty’s Light Inspired by New Colossus by Emma Lazarus & the endeavors of hopeful immigrants everywhere For A’capella Women’s Choir

Program Notes: Duration: ~8:50 I am the great grandchild of immigrants. We are a nation of immigrants most of the people I know are only first, second or third generation Americans. Yet anti-immigration rhetoric is nearly as old as our country itself. Who can or should be “let in” has been debated since the 17th century.* But current speechifying shakes the foundation of who we are as a country. As a bright-eyed university graduate, I got my first real job in New York City. Visiting the Statue of Liberty, I was inspired by Emma Lazarus’ poem at its base. Written in 1883 and erected in 1903, her personification of Lady Liberty is also her reflection of what the statue symbolizes to the people who have come here. A trip to Ellis Island tells us what the poem does not – why people made the one-way trip to come to America. Lazarus’ 19th century poem of 14 lines acknowledges that most immigrants arrived from Europe by water. That is no longer the case. I wanted this piece to also reflect the extended symbolism of the Statue of Liberty and her torch into the 21st century. I added 20 lines creating similar style verse. Today, many arrive by foot, or plane not by boat. People come for many of the same reasons as in the past, but are now also fleeing violent regimes. Many face death in their home countries. Over the last century, the Statue of Liberty and her torch has come to embody hope and opportunity of a better life. It represents freedom, democracy and justice for people all over the world. On the statue itself freedom is expressed in the form of chains smashed, at her feet. While for many, reality doesn’t measure up to the ideal, it is the values and pursuit of that ideal that I want to convey. As a country we are so much richer with the knowledge, skills and hard work immigrants bring. Liberty’s Light is born out of the idea that her torch is a beacon of light for all of us, past, present and future.
* I acknowledge that this continent was full of diverse, thriving societies and nations prior to the European invasion and occupation.
Performance Notes: STAGING: Initially, Soprano 1 & 2 and Contralto 1 & 2 (voices 7 & 8) stand in a square on stage. At m. 2, Soprano 3 walks in from left side; at m. 5, Soprano 4 enters from right side. Upon which the square will morph into a bowed (or arc) line At m. 7, Alto 1 (voice 5) enters from back corner; at m. 9, Alto 2 (voice 6) enters from the other back corner. In general, this piece is very expressive. While highly chromatic, the harmonic language is tonal and very traditional. Dynamics are directional and open to interpretation. The Lazarus poem assumes immigrants from Europe, so the beginning of the piece uses whispered vocalizations representing the sea. Eeh -ooh for the wind, and Shh – hh for the waves. There is no pitch, I’ve put them on the staff as an indication to make the sound higher or lower in one’s sound-effects register. The time frame for each of the sounds is not rigid. I could have easily just put the sounds with repeat signs for a specific duration, but since it integrates with specific sung passages, it seems more understandable this way. Ooh-wah is the sound of boat horns. On pp. 12-13, the “ti” sound is percussive, a background sound that adds texture. Part of the poem is spoken, (think oratory) not sung (See page 2 for the first examples). I read it in a variety of ways, as different people might, and approximated the number of measures. So the readings over measures 9-17 may take a few more or less seconds than indicated by the time signature. Adjust the sound effects accordingly. More readings are throughout the piece. Likewise, I’ve put a couple of fermatas and empty measures in the piece for pause; the actual duration of pauses is the discretion of the conductor. Lastly, on the news, on twitter, there are negative soundbites about refugees and immigrants. These are not new. In the early 20th century the top questions for people entering the U.S. was self-sufficiency, criminal past and health. I wanted to address this so on pp.18-19, mm. 100, 102, & 103. I have optional comments that could be shouted out – much in the way that Twitter shouts out at us from the fray. That said, this could be confrontational in some communities, so it is the choral ensemble’s discretion whether or not to include these comments.
