Fanfare for Justice Low French Horn (also Tenor Saxophone) Duration ~ 5:25 Program Notes: The impetus for Fanfare for Justice, evolved out of the repeated senseless deaths of black people. As videos of these became increasing visible to the public, and as rage continued to build, we all witnessed the nine-minute death of George Floyd. Worldwide protests erupted. As artists, we are often compelled to do more than join others on the streets, or to put a sign in the front yard. Silence is complicity. Music is my voice. Most of the piece is created from the syllabic /and or timbral elements of the words and names shouted during the protest marches. Injustice for one, is injustice for all.
- Christina Rusnak 2020
Performance Notes: Fanfare for Justice, while specifically notated, is intended for the performer to interpret somewhat freely. The areas of contrasting dynamics represent distance – in a big crowd, some sounds are close, others further away. The melodic motive for “I can’t breathe” is also soft. Bring your experience and emotion to the piece and make it your own. In looking for visual partners for this piece, I came across Cinematographer Adam Simmons (https://www.airview.us/about/). He created the image on the Front Cover and the following video in Portland Oregon on June 1, 2020, and has chosen to put it in the PUBLIC Domain. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RjNUz0XGNQA&feature=youtu.be The video is soundless and makes an ideal partner to the solo, with the instrument portraying marchers chanting. If you choose to show the video with the performance, Mr. Simmons asks to please make a donation to https://www.aclu.org and/or https://www.dontshootpdx.org. If the video is shown at a venue with ticket sales, he asks that you donate at least $50 to both. Optimally, the piece could be performed with video from the location of the
performance. I composed the piece so it could stand alone without a video. That said, context, in the form of event components or other visuals only adds to the experience.
