Veteran’s Day Parade

Colorado Springs Veterans Day Parade The Colorado Veterans Day Parade proceeds south on Tejon Street, starting at St. Vrain Street and ending at Vermijo Avenue.

PARKING HANDICAPPED SPECTATOR PARKING: On Bijou Street between Tejon Street & Nevada Avenue. Handicapped spectators can sit in their car and watch the parade, or watch from outside of their vehicle (their option). Handicapped persons may also gain access to the Viewing Stand area at Pikes Peak and Tejon where we can accommodate persons in a wheelchair or those able to navigate bleachers. Use Cascade and Pikes Peak to gain access.

HISTORY OF THE PARADE Twenty years ago a small group of patriotic volunteers formed a non-profit organization to host an annual Colorado Springs Veterans Day Parade. Their mission was simple: To recognize local veterans by hosting a first-class parade in their honor. For the first time ever the parade was canceled last year due to the pandemic. The parade has approximately 100 units that include military units from 4 bases, Veterans Organizations, JROTC Youth, military and high school bands, Boy and Girl Scout Groups, horse and motorcycle groups.

The parade is held the first Saturday in November and there is no fee for the parade participants. The parade is open to the public and we do not sell food or souvenirs. We want the focus of the day to be entirely on the veterans that have so honorably served our country.

There are 5 different types of sponsors that have helped us for 20 years. One type of sponsor is an In-Kind sponsor. There are several of these supporters that provide services to the parade that would otherwise require an increase in the funds needed to put on the parade. One in particular is the Military Newspaper Group that provides this program each year. Another is FLEXTEC Corporation that supplies stickers each year to be distributed throughout the Colorado Springs Elementary Schools. Teachers can use these stickers to talk about Veterans Day and about the large military population that includes family members of many of the children in the schools.

The parade could not begin on parade day without the 20 Volunteers that assist in the staging area making sure all the units are ready to proceed down the parade route.

These are just three of the sponsors helping make the parade a special day for the military population in Colorado Springs. On page 3B in this program you can find a complete list of all the sponsors that contributed to this years parade.

2021 Veterans Day Parade Army Sergeant Major (retired) Andrew Bell Jr.

S

ergeant Major (Retired) Andrew Bell Jr. was born in St. Louis, Missouri on December 26, 1933, and lived there until he enlisted in the U.S. Army on March 26, 1951. He was immediately assigned to Company B, 645th Combat Engineer Battalion at Camp McCoy Wisconsin. Although, the armed forces were officially racially integrated, the 645th was all African American except for the Battalion Commander, who was Caucasian.

He completed basic and engineering training in the same unit.

December 1952, he was assigned to Company C, 73rd Combat Engineer Bn. in Korea. On July 26 or 27, 1953, all combat operations were terminated and a cease-fire began. His unit began working with a group of Chinese Soldiers, clearing minefields by destroying them in place using quarter-pound blocks of TNT. The unit was establishing the Demilitarized Zone, above the 38th parallel. March 1954, Andrew returned from Korea and was discharged at Camp Carson, Colorado Springs.

Upon discharge he traveled back to his hometown of St. Louis and after being there for about two months, he decided to reenlist in the army. He believes because he had a great deal of time and experience working with explosives, he was assigned to the 516th Engineer Co. in St. Johann, Austria. During 1954 and 1955, the unit was tasked with classified missions throughout the country. He served in several combat engineer battalions in Germany Fort Campbell, Ky also.

After being assigned to the U. S. Armor Board at Fort Knox, Kentucky for a year, he decided to volunteer for the Special Forces. Once he completed jump school at Fort Benning, Georgia in 1963 he was assigned to Special Forces Training Group at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He completed the Special Forces Medical Airmen Course at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. During a night jump at Fort Bragg, he was injured and subsequently, assigned to the 30th medical group in Germany. He served in Vietnam in 1969 for 14 months, with Company B, 326th Medical Battalion, 101st Airborne Division. He served in a variety of units during his career and retired from the Inspector General's Office as Sergeant Major at Fort Carson, Colorado on 31 August 1981.

After his army career, worked at Community Corrections in Colorado Springs as a Correctional Supervisor for seventeen years and then he was employed as a Security Officer at the Pikes Peak Library District until 2011. Mr. Bell is married and has two daughters, three sons and several grandchildren. He has lived in Colorado Springs since 1981.

Army Sergeant First Class (retired) Arnold Johnson

A

rmy Sergeant First Class (retired) Arnold Johnson is a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He was born on a farm outside Brady, Nebraska, the eighth of ten children. After the Depression years, the family moved from their country sod house to town. At age 18, he was drafted into the US Army and departed shortly after graduating from Brady High School in 1944.

Seventeen weeks of basic training were completed at Camp Roberts, CA, in the 4th Platoon, Battery D, 53rd Field Artillery Battalion. From there then-Private Johnson was assigned to Battery C, 749th Field Artillery Battalion at Camp Hood, TX. The unit passed through Ft. Lawton, WA, and Schofield Barracks, HI, before arriving off the coast of Okinawa on the USS Allendale. They came ashore on April 2, 1945, and were assigned to 24th Corps (Artillery), 10th US Army. Private Johnson was a crewman operating 8‑inch Howitzers. Following the Battle of Okinawa and the end of World War II, he was sent to Inchon, Korea, to process Japanese troops for their return to Japan. This included movement to Sasebo, Japan; Cheju Island; again to Sasebo, Japan; and Pusan, Korea, over a 5-month period.

In April, 1946, then-Corporal Johnson was discharged from the Army at Ft. Douglas, UT, and returned to Nebraska. A year later he re-enlisted in the Army at Lowry AFB, CO. Subsequent assignments included the 94th Quartermaster Battalion at Ladd AFB, AK; Supply Squadron, Administration Group at newly reactivated Eielson AFB, AK; Headquarters Detachment, The Armored School, 3rd Armored Division at Ft. Knox, KY; and Maintenance Training Division, Automotive Branch at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, MD. During the Korean War, then-Staff Sergeant Johnson was assigned to the Korean Military Advisory Group in Kwanju, Korea. His career continued in the 1950s with the 244th Ordnance Company at Camp Atterbury, IN; Headquarters Special Troops, 8th US Army (Forward) in Seoul (Yong-San), Korea; Tokorozawa Ordnance Depot in Tokyo, Japan; and Maintenance Battalion, 1st Armored Division at Ft. Polk, LA. In 1956, he spent a year in Saudi Arabia with the US Army Element, US Military Training Mission, followed by an assignment to the National Guard Armory in Fremont, Nebraska. From 1959-62 he served in Mannheim, Germany, with the 63rd Ordnance Company; Headquarters, 19th Ordnance Battalion; and Headquarters, 51st Ordnance Group. During his last four years in the Army, Sergeant First Class Johnson was assigned to Headquarters & Headquarters 5th Supply & Transportation Battalion, 5th Infantry Division (Mechanized) at Ft. Carson, CO; Korean Military Advisory Group in Wonju, Korea; and Headquarters & Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 12th Infantry, 4th Infantry Division (Mechanized) in Ft. Lewis, WA, where he retired in 1966.

Mr. Johnson returned to Colorado Springs and was employed a short time by the US Post Office before working in administration at Army Air Defense Command (ARADCOM).

Following the deactivation of ARADCOM, he served as an Army civilian with the Division of Engineering and Housing at Ft. Carson, Colorado. He retired from civilian service in 1988.

He then worked for AVIS, shuttling rental cars to and from the Colorado Springs and Denver airports to numerous destinations for 16 years. In October, 2009, he participated in the sixth Rocky Mountain Honor Flight which toured the World War II Memorial in Washington, DC. He was recently part of a group of World War II veterans who were honored by the Dream Flights organization with a flight in a 1943 Stearman biplane.

Arnold Johnson and his wife, Ruth, have resided in Colorado Springs since 1962, except for a short time at Ft. Lewis, WA. They have three daughters.
