As a result, this mindfulness of others helps each person remember how to be a good friend. Service before self is an important core value in the work of the Air Force.

This includes serving others and not just putting the job first. The proverb, “A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother,” speaks of the value of having just one good friend.

In the military and civilian community, there is an opportunity this month to reflect on resiliency in relationships in light of the national emphasis on suicide awareness. There are many stories about suicide loss and intervention. The Air

Force and the Swamp Fox families have their own stories.

Last year at this time the suicide rate of the USAF was thirty percent higher than in prior years. In response there was a mandate for a resiliency pause to help recover and regroup.

McEntire held a resiliency day in December and the Chaplain Corps held a pause and pray at the flag pole each Sunday of drill through the fall. Similar activities took place across the

— The 50th Force Support Squadron’s Force Development Flight is scheduled to host Schriever’s first Airman professional enhancement seminar Sept. 28-29 in the Bldg. 300 Auditorium here.

A professional enhancement seminar is a course that bridges the gap between formal professional development — First Term Airman Course, Airman Leadership School, Noncommissioned Officer Academy, etc. It also helps members build connections through a plethora of conversations and hands-on learning.

“We can never provide our Airmen too many tools

for success.”

“Going to ALS, I felt ill-prepared,” said Staff Sgt. David Gudgeon, 50th FSS FTAC noncommissioned officer in charge and Airman PES team lead. “They throw a lot of information at you, and based on your experiences, it may be the first time you’re presented with it. We want to give Airmen the ability to learn that information sooner, so they’re prepared for [future] courses and so we can shape them into better leaders.”

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the course size is limited to 20 Airmen with potential to grow depending if/when COVID-19 restrictions ease, seats are available on first-come, first-served basis.

“The course is going to be tailored to the Airmen who attend,” Gudgeon said. “We polled airmen and asked them what they’d want to learn more about and what things would be pertinent to them and that’s how we shaped our curriculum.”

The seminar covers the following: • Leadership and followership • Leadership scenarios • Building connections Panels will be available for Airmen. The panels are: • First Sergeants • Senior Leaders • Supervisors Additionally, agencies across the installation are scheduled to brief. Some of the agencies who plan to brief are the Education Center and the Airman and Family Readiness Center.

“We can never provide our Airmen too many tools for success,” said Master Sgt. Bryan Scroggs, 4th Space Operations Squadron first sergeant. “The benefits from attending these courses are endless.

Everyone walks out with either a refresher on their knowledge or learns something new they were not tracking before.”

The course is scheduled to be hosted quarterly, but if demand warrants, the course can be held more frequently.

“It’s easy to get stagnant and Airmen may not always be afforded the opportunity to better themselves,” Gudgeon said.

“This offers a regulated, periodical training that Airmen can choose to attend to better themselves.”

The two-day course is slated for 8 a.m.4p.m. on both days and considered an alternate duty location.

“The second [we] stop wanting to expand your professional development is the second we stop evolving as a force,” Scroggs said. “Never settle for knowledge you already feel you have, but strive to gain knowledge and improve every day. Our future as [an Air and Space Force] depends on each and every one of our Airmen and what they all individually bring to the fight.”

Gen. Raymond coins 50th SFS Airmen

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Three 50th Security Forces Squadron Airmen earned coins from Gen. John “Jay” Raymond, chief of Space Operations, United States Space Force, after assisting with an M18 pistol qualification training Aug. 19, at Bldg. 810.

Raymond honored Tech. Sgt. Brian Litney, noncommissioned officer in charge of combat arms, Tech. Sgt. Garrett Brew, combat arms instructor, and Staff Sgt. Casey Grant, combat arms instructor, for helping him earn his qualification in less than 48 hours of receiving his assigned weapon.

“It’s not the first time I’ve been coined, but it’s the first time I’ve been coined by the [chief of Space Operations], so that’s pretty historic,” Litney said. “I can look back and tell my grandchildren this was a cool experience. [Being coined by Raymond] is something to be excited about.”

Initially, Raymond’s security team contacted other local

bases to access the training, but none had available slots. “[His team] contacted us a day or two prior to his training and we happened to have the flexibility to adapt our schedule to facilitate the General first experience with the Department of Defense’s new handgun,” Litney said.

“We were happy to take care of General Raymond and his team to get them qualified.”

The training was required as the Air Force switches from the M9 Beretta service pistol to the M18 modular handgun system. The training included weapons familiarization where Airmen highlighted the different weapon, magazine and grip sizes of the M18, and the differences between the M9 and M18 pistol.

Raymond also completed the live fire portion of the M18 qualification at the installation's weapons training facility.

“It was great being able to help — you don’t get to assist a joint service chief often so all three of us were happy to do it,” Brew said. “It was a chance to do a qualification and get face time with the top service chief of the Space

Force and we got to work with some of his [Office of Special Investigations] agents, too.”

The 50th SFS has hosted numerous notable officers such as the commander for the Inspector General’s Office and Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force.

“No matter who comes in, we know how to do our job and we make sure to do it well,” Grant said.

Litney shared Grant’s sentiments and said he was confident in his Airmen’s ability to teach the weapons systems to Raymond, or anyone else who enters their facility.

“My instructors have to go through annual training requirements as far as instruction and weapons mechanics,” Litney said. “I evaluate them on their ability to speak and perform in front of individuals on the weapons systems they teach. I’d expect them to exude excellence in all they do when instructing someone on weapons systems, especially as high caliber as General Raymond. I had no doubt everyone there would take care of business.”

FAT Increment 3 Test verifies capabilities Staff report Space and Missile Systems Center Public Affairs

LOS ANGELES AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. — The United States Space Force’s Space and Missile Systems Center completed the First Article Test Increment 3 of the Mitigation and Anti-Jam Enhancement capability for the Wideband Global SATCOM program, June 18.

Adaptive Nulling and Detection capabilities were successfully tested during the FAT with the test resulting in passing 165 requirements. The adaptive nulling test demonstrated MAJE’s ability to suppress interference to optimize performance when contested. Detection testing measured MAJE’s ability to detect simulated interferers based on power level and frequency.

This significant achievement marks the first increment of FAT testing performed for the WGS program under Space Force. These capabilities will further the mission to bring full-time operations dedicated to defending our vital national interests in space.

MAJE consists of software and hardware upgrades for the Army-operated Global SATCOM Configuration Control Element ground system that performs detection, identification, geolocation and mitigation of unwanted radio frequency energy on the WGS 1-10 satellites.

Due to limitations posed by the COVID-19 global pandemic, 10 days of testing were completed virtually with operators and witnesses teleworking. Army and USSF personnel witnessed test procedure execution while the equipment under test was physically located at Boeing’s Mission Operations Support Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Capt. Connor Macmillan, WGS Test and Integration lead from SMC’s Geosynchronous/Polar Orbit Division; and Nasir Muhammad, MAJE Lead from

the Aerospace Corporation, oversaw the test’s execution.

Upon MAJE fielding to warfighter operations, WGS 1-10 will have an inherent geolocation and interference mitigation capability allowing for quick isolation of unwanted signals and faster restoral times of affected authorized user communications. FAT-4, scheduled for this fall, will test the MAJE system’s Geolocation ability.

FAT-5, the final increment of FAT testing, will complete Multi-capability and end to end testing. Successful completion of all FAT increments will establish that the GSCCE-MAJE system is ready to move forward into the interface verification with the Army’s subsystems.

“MAJE will double the anti-jam SATCOM capabilities for six Geographic Combatant Commands,” said Col. John Dukes, SMC’s Geosynchronous Polar Orbit Division senior materiel leader.

WGS provides flexible, high-capacity communications for the nation’s warfighters by providing worldwide, high data rate and long-haul communication for Marines, soldiers, sailors, Airmen, the White House Communication Agency, the U.S. State Department, international partners and other special users.

50th CES conducts Prime BEEF training

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Nearly 50 Airmen from the 50th Civil Engineer Squadron participated in Prime Base Engineer Emergency Force training at Schriever Air Force Base, Aug. 20.

Prime BEEF training, which occurs the third Thursday of each month, prepares civil engineer forces to execute operations down range, which can include hands-on training like land navigation, CPR and individual or team tactical movements.

“All of our training encompasses anything we could encounter in a warzone or a joint exercise or training with other branches.”

The goal of Prime BEEF training is to create and maintain civil engineer forces capable of completing multiple objectives at any time. Air Force Instruction 10-210 lists those objectives as: Reacting to support Air and Space contingency and installation sustainment missions, supporting wartime mobility and mission requirements and supporting in-place requirements and supporting critical installation asset requirements.

“When we go down range, typically engineer forces are on the front line, or close to it, building places for people to bed down and maintain their presence,” said Senior Master Sgt. Matthew Voorhees, 50th CES superintendent. “In order to do joint [operations] with the Army or Marines, Airmen on the front lines have to train in a similar fashion, so we’re prepared to operate effectively.

We don’t want to go in green where they have to teach us how to do things while in a warzone.”

While the training can occur on or off Schriever AFB, Voorhees said the 50th CES’s recent training happened “everywhere on base, but mainly in the restricted area,” to prepare Airmen for a myriad of wartime situations.

Airmen learned how to operate heavy equipment, set up defensive fighting positions and create entry control points. Airmen also learned how to perform land navigation in the restricted area.

“Land navigation training teaches Airmen how to survive by using a compass to navigate from one point to another,” Voorhees said. “All of our training encompasses

anything we could encounter in a warzone or a joint exercise or training with other branches.”

For three months, though, Prime BEEF exercises moved to computer based training after the coronavirus pandemic required the majority of the force to telework.

Second Lt. Johnathan Whitesell, 50th CES Operations Engineering chief, said CBTs included convoy training, proper ways to wear pieces of body armor and self-aid buddy care exercises.

Voorhees said the unit prefers to do in-person Prime BEEF training, but the various aspects of CBTs helped Airmen remain cognizant of their mission.

“The last thing you want to do is send a young Airman fresh out of technical school, deploy them to an unknown location and they don’t have the necessary skills to survive or adapt to certain situations,” Voorhees said. “[COVID-19] affected us, but we did computer based training to ensure Airmen have the foundation of information to operate effectively down range.”

Whitesell, who currently leads the 50th CES’s Prime

BEEF training, said he coordinates the use of facilities with local installations such as Peterson Air Force Base, the U.S. Air Force Academy and Fort Carson, to ensure quality training.

“Peterson is a bigger base and is nearby,” Whitesell said. “The Air Force Academy also has a lot of land and resources they’re willing to let us use as long as we plan ahead. Fort Carson has more of the expeditionary equipment, like Humvees. I want to make sure this training is valuable to everyone in my squadron.”

Whitesell said civil engineers have to be prepared to deploy any time and perform their duty at their next station.

“Air Force civil engineers are the only ones who also have to maintain base daily,” Whitesell said. “Most of our other branches, if you’re in CES, you don’t necessarily help maintain the base while you’re not deployed. We’re expected to maintain the base along with our civilian counter parts. Prime BEEF training provides the opportunity to stay up-to-date to complete the mission.”

2.4K Airmen to transfer into Space Force beginning this month

WASHINGTON, (AFNS) — Beginning this month and continuing throughout the fall, more than 2,400 active-duty Airmen in space operations (13S) and space systems operations (1C6) career fields will transfer into the U.S. Space Force in public and private ceremonies across the globe.

“This is a momentous occasion for the Space Force and

for each of these space professionals.”

Given limits on mass gatherings in the current COVID-19 environment, the Space Force will commemorate the transfers with a virtual swearing-in ceremony Sept. 15 following live remarks from Chief of Space Operations Gen. John “Jay” Raymond during the Air Force Association’s Virtual Air, Space and Cyber Conference. In addition to the ceremonial swearing-in, members can also opt for private events or participate in locally organized ceremonies.

“This is a momentous occasion for the Space Force and for each of these space professionals,” Raymond said. “We intend to give our newest Space Force members and their families the

special recognition they deserve, while at the same time share this historic event with the American people.”

To officially transfer from one military service to another, a military member separates from the current service and commissions or enlists into the new service in their current rank. On the official date of transfer, enlisted members will be administered the Oath of Enlistment and sign enlistment contracts into the Space Force.

Officers will be administered the Oath of Office and sign official Space Force commissioning documents. Both officers and enlisted members will incur a minimum two-year active-duty service commitment in volunteering for the transfer.

“There has been substantial planning behind the scenes between the Space Force and Air Force personnelists to get us to this day,” said Patricia Mulcahy, deputy chief of space operations for personnel and logistics. “We understand the personal circumstances that influence a member’s decision to volunteer for transfer, and I am incredibly proud of the team’s thoughtfulness put into every decision to ensure we provide members with as seamless a transfer process as possible.”

The Space Force is holding virtual town halls to provide an opportunity for members to ask questions related to transfers and ceremonies.

Details on required documents to transfer, sample ceremony scripts and related information, are available on the Air Force Portal at my.af.mil.

Stay safe Labor Day weekend

The National Safety Council estimates there could be up to 390 roadway fatalities this Labor Day weekend based on trends from previous years.

Fatal crashes in Colorado, due to DUIs, between January and July, rose from 28% of fatalities in 2019 to 30% in 2020.

Three factors that drive those numbers are alcohol consumption, distracted driving and fatigue. Do your part to keep the number of fatalities down by having a plan and a backup plan if you consume alcohol, keeping 100% of your focus on the roadway and staying alert and well rested.
