From the pandemic to current race relations to the upcoming election, it appears no matter where you look, there is something about each topic, good, bad or indifferent.

All the animosity in the U.S. coupled with everyday life can be too much for some or bring out emotions and opinions in people we would have least expected. From our own individual families to the Airmen in our squadrons, 2020 has been tough on everyone. To be honest, there are many who feel that things are not getting any better. However, one way for us as families, the Air Force and United States to begin to move forward and overtake this animosity is to fully practice empathy.

I know as you read this, you may be thinking how “would feeling someone’s pain” go toward fixing any of what’s going on in the world? By unpacking that phrase, it shows how deep empathy is and the other values that are shown within it. The ability to “feel someone’s pain” means we as individuals must put ourselves in other’s shoes to see their point of view. Some would call that respect.

Recently, it was announced there is still race disparity in the Air Force. We all had to have “tough conversations” within our squadrons; but in reality, these talks will not move the ball

That indirect absorption of energy is considered a part of empathy. Personally, my wife has really taught me a lot about this, as having awareness of the energy around you improves how you approach life. Being emotionally intelligent is a key trait we all need to understand. forward if everyone involved does not try to put themselves in another person’s shoes. Attempting to understand where someone else is coming from can be an awakening moment. We all came from different places and have different life experiences.

In a perfect world, we would all use these differences to learn and drive toward making society better instead of divisive. Next is the ability to feel a person’s emotions as if they are your own.

We have all known that person who lights up a room when they walk in or the person who has such a negative attitude it drags down the office.

Local Airmen volunteer, aid local homeless veterans

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Airmen from Peterson and Schriever Air Force Bases volunteered in support of the 22nd Annual Stand Down for Colorado’s Homeless Veterans in Colorado Springs, Colorado, Sept. 15.

The stand down, organized by the El Paso County Homeless Veterans Coalition, aims to provide homeless veterans with winter clothing and a host of state and government services to remedy their needs.

“These are veterans... someone’s mother, father, child or grandparent,” said Lt. Col. Michael Schriever, 2nd Space Operations Squadron commander. “Someone who we can show our common bond through military service, connect with for an afternoon and try to bring some comfort to their lives.”

During the event, volunteers help homeless veterans identify earned service benefits that may transition them into a stable home and work environment.

“As active duty and civilian members of the Air Force and Space Force, we show care and pride in our community and those who served before us,” Schriever said.

More than 170 veterans per year are helped during this annual event.

“Each veteran was checked in by volunteers and vetted for eligibility,” Schriever said.

After veterans received their respective services, volunteers escorted them to collect winter clothing, personal items and boots in their respective sizes. Lastly, the veterans were provided with a box lunch from a local restaurant.

At the stand down, veterans visited service booths from the Rocky Mountain Human Services, Greccio Housing, Pikes Peak Employment Center, Mt. Caramel Veterans Service Center and more.

In previous years, the event also offered services such as hearing tests, dental exams, haircuts and vaccinations.

However, due to COVID-19, this year’s event had to be scaled down to less service booths.

“We receive feedback every year on how much it means to these veterans to share the day with fellow military in uniform who understand their service,” Schriever said. “[The veterans] swap stories and have

someone listen to them and care about their needs in a manner that we do every day in our military family environment.”

The annual event has been supported by Airmen from Peterson and Schriever since 2008.

“Events like these remind us of those who came before us and to remember they’re still a part of our family,” said Airman 1st Class Erica Lynne, 50th Operations Support Squadron student.

Schriever welcomes new chaplain

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo.

— The Chapel Corps here gained its newest member, Lt. Col. Kevin Hudson, Peterson-Schriever Garrison Operating Location Schriever installation chaplain, Sept. 18.

“We’re here to serve everybody.”

Hudson was born at Torrejon Air Base in Madrid, Spain, to an Air Force family, which offered him the opportunity to travel the world at a young age.

“I guess you can call me an Air Force brat,” he said jokingly. “But when I was in high school and college, I told people I wasn’t going to join the military and I wasn’t going to be a preacher — but you see how that turned out.”

Before serving at Schriever, Hudson was stationed at Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama, and despite having served for more than 15 years, Schriever is his first assignment as an installation chaplain.

“When 9/11 happened, I started thinking about how I could serve,” he said. “It

took a while, but I eventually commissioned in 2004 and now I can’t imagine doing anything else.”

The Schriever Chapel Corps keeps morale high and the mission advancing yearround with their team of four.

“We have a really strong team here and I believe [the addition of] Chaplain Hudson is going to strengthen it even more,” said Master Sgt. Warrenette Mitchell, Schriever religious affairs superintendent.

Hudson said his primary goal as the new installation chaplain is to continue the work of retired installation chaplain Maj. Martin Adamson and take care of air and space professionals more than anyone thinks possible.

“I get energized by being around Airmen,” he said. “Hearing their perspectives on life, the world and culture really helps me stay connected. It’s important we connect with Airmen and learn their concerns, needs, hopes and dreams. We all need to have connections, we’re just wired that way.”

Hudson said he cherishes diversity. He wants people to feel comfortable talking to him about anything and said he lives by the Bible verse Matthew 23:37-39.

“I summarize [Matthew 23:37] as ‘love God and love people,’” he said. “And that’s something that’s really important to me.”

— The Air Force Installation and Mission Support Center has a “Call for Topics” now through Dec. 1 for its third annual Innovation Rodeo.

The Innovation Rodeo resembles the television show “Shark Tank” where investors — in this case a panel of three to four members of senior leadership — listen to Airmen pitch a product, which ranges from phone applications to augmented reality technology.

Airmen’s ideas are then vetted and selected to proceed to the finals where senior leadership then selects first-, second- and third-place winners.

“If you want to be an innovator and improve the Air Force,

the event is ideal to present your idea.”

The event welcomes mission support groups and civilians to participate and winners will earn a share of $1 million to fund their innovation.

Since the event began in 2019, Maj. Gen. Tom Wilcox, AFIMSC commander, said the Innovation Rodeo flipped a $3 million innovation budget into more than $65 million in venture capital to support Airmen’s ideas.

“Our last two Innovation Rodeos have been resounding successes,” Wilcox said.

“We’ve turned ideas into reality for [remotely powered aircraft], advanced sensors, artificial intelligence and machine learning, software bots and mobile apps.”

Though first through third place earns about $333,000 for their product, it’s pos-

sible to obtain more financing for their projects. “[Installation and Mission Support funds] can transition their $333,000 into more than $1 million because of a $750,000 [Small Business Innovative Research Funds] match,” said Dustin Dickens, AFIMSC Innovation project manager.

Maj. Jacque Vasta, Air Force Personnel Center section commander and previously stationed at Peterson Air Force Base, won the 2020 Innovation Rodeo.

The major’s idea, an app and web platform called Kinderspot, earned $1.3 million in funding the concept.

Kinderspot will allow Air Force members to sublease their kid’s childcare spot to eligible families with short-term childcare requirements.

The application and website will be tested February 2021 in three locations — one at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas, and two bases to be determined.

Vasta had the idea for Kinderspot four years ago after struggling to sublease her child’s daycare spot prior to a temporary duty station assignment.

“After having gone through the subleasing process, I had a lightning bolt of a vision of what the app could look like,” Vasta said. “Putting that [idea] to paper and creating a presentation to show other people what I [have] took some time, effort and a lot of collaboration with a lot of friends and mentors.”

Dickens said mentors and leadership bridge the gap between ideas and executing concepts so winners can advance their products.

50th FSS to host annual half marathon

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 50th Force Support Squadron will host its 15th annual half marathon at Schriever Air Force Base Oct. 2.

The 13.1-mile race, which begins and ends at the fitness center, follows Schriever’s perimeter with a detour up Enoch Road. Road guards will be available to protect runners as they cross Enoch Road and Irwin Drive.

“As of [Sept. 18], we have 22 participants, so we should be able to spread everyone out,” said Seth Cannello, 50th Force Support Squadron fitness and sports manager. “We’ll have water on the route every three miles and we’ll have the course patrolled in case someone has an issue [injury, dehydration, etc.].”

For new participants, Cannello said the concern is runners won’t pace themselves and become exhausted before they finish.

“If you start too strong, you’ll really regret it around mile nine,” Cannello said. “Your goal as a first-time participant should be to finish and not worry about a specific time other than you have to finish within three hours.”

Cannello doesn’t expect the half marathon to be too difficult for participants and said runners normally finish between one and a half and two and a half hours.

to four miles nearly five times per week while wearing a 15-pound vest. Though he hasn’t run the 13.1 miles of the half marathon during his training sessions, “in quite some time,” Voorhees said the race is more of a mental challenge than physical.

“You have to push past the hurt and just keep going until you cross the finish line,” Voorhees said. “There’s adversity in running because your mind tells you to slow down or stop because you’re hurting. You have to tell your body you’re not done and keep going. That’s the mentality I come at it with.”

“Running helps me cope with things going on in my life,” she said. “I’ll meditate and pray as I’m running and use running to think about how I’ll get through things in my life.”

Delta 7 gains new space intelligence squadrons

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Delta 7 activated the 71st and 72nd Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance Squadrons Sept. 11, at Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado.

The squadrons made history as one of the first space intelligence squadrons activated in the United States Space Force.

“The realignment of intelligence forces under the U.S. Space Force represents a generational opportunity to re-think the way we apply intelligence support to operations both in space and other supported domains,” said Senior Master Sgt. Justin Michaels, 71st ISRS superintendent. “It represents a chance for us to approach mission requirements in innovative ways that allows us to better understand the threat environment and ensure the safety and protection of our forces.”

Maj. Michael Harter, 71st ISRS commander, said the squadron presents intelligence support to all the Space Mission Deltas across the USSF. The unit provides intelligence professionals from six geographically separated detachments to work directly with space operators.

“We provide operational intelligence on adversary actions and reactions so space operators can best posture themselves to accomplish their mission,” Harter said.

Also operating on Peterson, with three geographically separated detachments, the 72nd ISRS provides tactically focused intelligence analysis, exploitation and reporting for the joint warfighter.

“We know the adversary is actively using space to do subversive and dangerous things,” said Maj. Kimberly Templer, 72nd ISRS commander.

One of the primary advantages of the ISR squadrons within the USSF, directly under Space ISR Delta 7, is the dissemination and utilization of operational intelligence in an expeditious, timely and efficient manner.

“The American way of life is heavily reliant on the capabilities and assets the Space Force provides,” Lloyd said. “It’s our job to identify threats and understand adversary capabilities and intent so we can provide sound assessments to our senior leaders [so they can] make time-critical decisions on how we protect and defend.”

Refocusing on the animosity and divisiveness in society, it is easy to see that society as a whole is lacking empathy.

Being empathetic is tough and it takes time. Think of it as a muscle that needs to be worked out to make stronger and more effective.

Depending on what article you read or what is posted on Facebook, it seems things are hopeless. With that being said, there is hope because as Airmen, we are considered role models in society, and by being empathetic leaders, we can affect society one day at a time. We can start with our families and take things one day at a time after that. Will it be easy?

No, but based on the profession we chose, easy is not in our vocabulary.

The safe use and proper installation of household appliances that burn fossil fuels is the best protection you can provide your family. Carbon monoxide detectors can add a level of protection, but are not a substitute for safe use of equipment. Have all heating equipment inspected and serviced each year. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for installation; install at least one carbon monoxide detector near bed rooms on every level of your home.
