OBBINS AIR RESERVE BASE, Ga. — There are four major ways your income can be taxed as a civilian or military member: taxable, tax-deferred, tax free or free money retirement plan contributions matched by your employer.

Three of the four are beneficial, including deferring your income taxes for any period of time as in your Thrift Savings Plan, 401(k), or annuity.

With the exception of a Roth, which is a pre-tax plan, eventually taxes will have to be paid upon retirement or withdrawal. The President’s memo, explained below, is designed primarily to help business owners’ cash flow and capital investments during these challenging times.

Normally, an employer pays 6.2% in Social Security contributions for themselves and their employees for a total of 12.4%. These contributions are waived for the remainder of 2020. This excludes Medicare.

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo.

— The Falcon Top 3 Council is re-launching the Deliberate Development Program Oct. 8 to provide mentorship and guidance to Airmen at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado.

The mentorship program will pair airman basics to technical sergeants, with a mentor from the Falcon Top 3, which is a private, professional organization for senior noncommissioned officers at Schriever. The Top 3 organization strives to provide professional development to enlisted Airmen while strengthening SNCO leadership skills.

“The goal of the Deliberate Development Program is to provide mentees with an alternate viewpoint while building long-lasting, professional relationships,” said Master Sgt. Kathryn North, 50th Force Support Squadron career assistance advisor and Falcon Top 3 member.

Airmen and SNCOs participating in the program must take a personality test to gauge interests and career goals.

“Mentees will be matched with a mentor for the length of one quarter,” North said.

“The mentor and mentee will make contact via phone at least once a week and will meet face-to-face at least twice a month.

The meetings will be tailored to the mentee’s personal and professional goals.”

Deliberate Development operates on a quarterly basis, meaning Airmen must

sign-up every quarter to participate and can be paired with a different mentor each time.

“The Team Schriever Deliberate Development Team believes that any of our Airmen can be the next [Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force] and understands the importance of Deliberate Development,” North said. “Collectively, our team will ensure Airmen are afforded every opportunity to become successful by providing constructive feedback, consistent encouragement, and positive reinforcement [to mentees].”

The program has been around for just over a year now, impacting more than 30 Airmen stationed at Schriever, with the goal of reaching out to even more.

“I think this is a great opportunity to learn and grow,” said Airman 1st Class Kaylee Christy, 50th Civil Engineer Squadron emergency management specialist. “We’re always told to find a mentor, and this is an easy way to do just that.”

Leadership here has championed connections being integral to the development and well-being of Airmen, and that’s just what this program is aimed at doing, connecting Airmen.

“Having insight from someone who has a lot of leadership experience and who has maybe walked a similar path as yourself is invaluable,” Christy said. “I think Airmen who participate in this program are going to learn a lot that will positively impact them for the rest of their careers.”

— Airmen can improve their physical health through routine physical training, consistent sleep patterns and proper caloric intake and hydration, according to Seth Cannello, 50th Force Support Squadron fitness and sports manager.

“When you are well-rested, you can perform at a higher level not only physically, but mentally.”

“Those aspects are critical to improving one’s physical condition and overall health,” Cannello said.

Not only is it beneficial for all Airmen to remain physically fit, but it’s also one of the four domains of Comprehensive Airman Fitness.

“Physical resilience is the body’s capacity to adapt to challenges, maintain stamina and recover efficiently and effectively when acutely engaged,” said Jan Devitt, Peterson-Schriever Garrison community support coordinator.

sports manager recommends Airmen write down what they eat and keep count of their caloric intake, as well as incorporate vegetables, fruits and whole grains in their diets.

“In order to be truly healthy, you need to exercise regularly, eat well and sleep at least eight hours a night,” he said. “Drink plenty of water and stop drinking soda and energy drinks.”

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, eating the right food supplies one’s body with the proper nutrients it needs to exercise and accomplish activities of daily living. In addition to diet, sleep also plays a large role in one’s overall health.

The National Sleep Foundation guidelines say healthy adults need between seven and nine hours of sleep every night.

“If you don’t get enough sleep, it takes you much longer to recover from a difficult workout,” Cannello said. “When you are well-rested, you can perform at a higher level not only physically, but mentally.”

Proper hydration is also key to improving physical fitness. The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine determined that an adequate daily water intake is about 15.5 cups for men and about 11.5 cups for women.

“The more consistent you are, the healthier you can be,” Cannello said.

50th FSS prepares for second annual dry-tri

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo.

— The 50th Force Support Squadron is scheduled to host its second annual Dry Triathlon Sept. 25 outside the base fitness center from 7:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

The event is similar to a regular triathlon, except the dry-tri does not include swimming or water-based competitions.

Competitors complete a 5K run, 2,000 meters on a rowing machine and 300 body squats. Mark Schuette, 50th FSS assistant fitness and sports manager, said he expects participants will finish within an hour of their start time.

“This is an excellent opportunity for the Schriever community,” he said “This is a chance to get out of the office or break away from teleworking, enjoy some friendly competition, and, hopefully, alleviate some stress and anxiety.”

CJ Thornton, 50th FSS recreation assistant and sports representative, said Schriever is one of the few bases still holding competitions during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Garrison leadership has limited numerous activities and required Airmen to telework for periods of time and maintain physical distancing guidelines in response to COVID-19. However, the fitness staff

works to ensure everyone is safe during their events.

“Obviously, [our events are] modified heavily to make sure everyone is safe,” Thornton said. “[The dry-triathlon] is good for everyone to be able to get away from whatever their job is. To get out and get

some fresh air and push themselves, and to see where they’re sitting is important right now.”

Since the dry-tri takes place outdoors, Schuette said COVID-19 will not affect any aspect of the event.

In addition to being outside, Schuette

said each rowing machine will be several feet apart and sanitized after each use. The event will also take place in blocks to limit Airmen in the area.

“We’ll have a group start at 7:30 (a.m.), 8:30, 9:30, so on and so forth,” Thornton said. “That gives us time to clean and allow things to dry so they’re ready to go for the next person. You can also walk around and breathe without a mask on. If you want to feel a little more safety in that element, you can wear a mask.”

The fitness staff understands it’s not only important to hold the event to keep Airmen fit, but also to curb any monotony caused

by COVID-19.

“We’re all making sure we do everything we can for our jobs and making sure we stay as vigilant with cleaning, masks and [physical] distancing to make sure we get through these tough times,” Thornton said.

“Allowing people to come out and push themselves in a physical element relieves mental stress they might not have known they had.”

Understanding suicide myths

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — It’s the feeling of drowning and having no help, the feeling of being alone when surrounded by others — it’s mental illness and it’s surrounded by myths.

Myths associated with mental health can often be dangerous. The stereotypes and stigmas are harmful to those who live with mental illness or thoughts of harming themselves. These factors can lead some to believe there are consequences for getting help.

“Myths can be harmful and being able to challenge things, ask questions and have real conversations about a difficult topic is the way we change those myths,” said Maj. Jessica Ditson, 50th Mission Support Group individual mobilization augmentee to the commander and Schriever violence prevention integrator.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S., which is why September is recognized as Suicide Prevention Month.

“Suicide is a problem that doesn’t discriminate,” said Maj. Louis Pagano, 21st Medical Squadron director of psychological health. “It can affect people of all ages and of any gender. It’s a silent problem for a lot of people. We need to create and cultivate an environment where people are OK with sharing how they feel because they don’t always feel comfortable discussing it or seeking care.”

Pagano said major risk factors include life transitions,

dramatic changes in behavior, legal, financial and relationship distress, engaging in risky behavior, making preparations for death and substance abuse. Additionally, Pagano said it is important to treat mental health with the same urgency as physical health.

“It’s really hard to predict who will end their life by suicide,” Pagano said. “It’s important we move away from thinking ‘the only people who end their lives by suicide are overtly depressed.’ Sometimes, there’s a lot of stuff inside that people are hiding and won’t share that we won’t know about unless we ask them.”

Airmen who are struggling with mental health are encouraged to seek help by utilizing a helping agency.

Ditson said one way to mitigate mental health issues and hopefully lower the suicide rate is by building connections with others, something everyone is capable of doing.

“Oftentimes, the more you try to avoid, control or suppress what’s going on, at best, it may stay the same, but for many people it gets worse,” Pagano said. “Things typically don’t get better when you avoid them.”

Another common myth is that Airmen will lose their clearance for seeking any sort of mental health assistance.

“The majority of people with clearances who seek mental health care do not see any negative impact on their career [Air Force wide],” Pagano said. “Airmen should be concerned about their clearances, but they shouldn’t be concerned for mental health reasons. It is true that the

mental health office can make recommendations to change security clearances for certain members, but by and large that’s very rare.”

Pagano said another common myth associated with suicide is it’s most likely to occur during the holiday months, but in actuality there is an increase in suicides during springtime. This is why it’s important Airmen genuinely check on each other and not just to check a box.

“Suicide is a problem that

“There’s this idea of duality that the mind and body are separate,” Pagano said. “The mind and the body are one and the same. Treating your physical health will make your mental health better and treating your mental health will make your physical health better. Thoughts, feelings, behaviors and physical experiences are all complexly interrelated with one another, you can’t just avoid one or there will be a cascade or chain effect.”

JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIORANDOLPH, Texas — Air Force recruiters nationwide will launch future enlisted space professionals to Basic Military Training to fill fiscal 2021 job opportunities.

The Department of Defense’s newest military branch is relying on Air Force Recruiting Service to find America’s best and brightest to fill more than 300 enlisted positions next fiscal year.

Competition for the limited number of opportunities is said to be tough.

During a virtual AFRS training session Sept. 10, with recruiters nationwide, U.S. Space Force career field managers from Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado, explained the caliber of applicant they are looking for to join them in their fight to assure access to space for America.

“We've gotten away from a checklist driven mindset to where we are lean and agile and our young Airmen have to think on-the-fly sometimes to outmaneuver some of the adversaries,” said Senior Master Sgt. Randy Magdaleno, U.S. Space Force manager of Special Programs Division. “As an example, we have young Airmen sitting in the 2nd Operations Squadron flying the Global Positioning System satellites and what a lot of people don't know is our Air Force and, now our U.S. Space Force, do the satellite command and control and operate our GPS systems out there for the world.”

This is the reason why career field managers say they need top-notch space professionals to stay ahead of adversaries and secure access to and through space for America in a hostile space environment.

Airmen who were selected to transfer to U.S. Space Force have joined the new service. In October, highly-qualified applicants without prior military experience will begin to make their way to BMT after being processed by an Air Force recruiter. That is their first step to service in the space mission.

They will apply at an Air Force office

but will specify which branch of service they would like to be considered for. It is possible they can choose both. The same screening for eligibility to serve will apply. Space specialties will continue to require the same Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery scores and security clearances which are higher than most Air Force career fields.

“Most of our jobs focus on orbital warfare, space electronic warfare, or space battle management,” said Senior Master Sgt. Daniel Hill, U.S. Space Force manager for the 1C6 Space Systems Operators Air Force Specialty Code. “We fly satellites, keeping them in position or repositioning them if a threat is detected.

We use radar to detect missile launches and track space debris to protect our assets in space.”

Descriptions for space specialties can be found on www.spaceforce.mil by clicking on the careers tab. Job locations are expected to be where a majority of these space professionals are currently located which include installations in California, Colorado and Florida but they can be found in smaller units worldwide.

In February 2021, the U.S. Space Force expects to fill other career opportunities that are key to the military space mission such as cyber security and intelligence.

Airmen currently holding those positions for the Air Force were given the opportunity in May 2020 to volunteer to transfer into the U.S. Space Force. Those selected to transfer will begin the nearly two-year process in February.

All space systems operator positions are scheduled to align in U.S. Space Force ranks and will no longer be called Airmen, but rather a yet to be determined nomenclature within the next two years.

Due to the unique capabilities space professionals perform for the nation, recruiters were encouraged by AFRS trainers to set up mentorship-like opportunities between applicants and active duty personnel or tour nearby space units where available when social distance and COVID health restrictions allow for such an opportunity.

President issues new tax memo

The President recently issued a memorandum to defer withholding, deposit and payment of certain payroll tax obligations. The Defense Finance Accounting Services will defer the Social Security employee deductions for all employees whose gross social security wages that are less than $4,000 in any given pay period through the end of 2020. The deferment will be taken out of wages January-April 2021.

Military members can use their August or prior LES as a good reference for their typical Social Security tax amount. The Social Security tax is labeled as “FICASOC SECURITY” on the LES and is calculated as 6.2% of basic pay.

Civilian Employees — Effective pay period ending Sept. 12, 2020, DFAS will temporarily defer your 6.2% OASDI tax withholding if your wages, subject to OASDI are less than $4,000 in any given pay period.

Employees can use the “Taxable Wages” on the LES as a good reference for whether they will have OASDI tax deferred.

The OASDI deduction is found on your LES under the deductions tab/section.

What to do with Payroll Tax Deferral: 1. Go online to IRS.gov and amend your W-4 using

the free IRS TAX withholding estimator now and at the beginning of the New Year. This takes about 20 minutes, with proper forms like your LES, brokerage and bank statements and a copy of last year’s taxes.

This will give you an idea as to whether to increase withholding or not for 2020. Remember that next year we will be using CPAs, tax attorneys, and enrolled agents on base for free during tax season but the time too amend your W-4 if necessary is now.

2. Open up a three month CD or Money Market

Mutual Fund for the remainder of the year and earmark these earnings for next year’s taxes if the memo is not made permanent by law. Most banks are still waiving withdrawal penalties, which is true of retirement accounts like an IRA or TSP through the remainder of the year.

3. Increase retirement plan contributions on MyPay

for the remainder of the year.

4. Catch up on holiday accounts and get a head start

on savings.

5. Ramp up an emergency fund of 3-6 months sav-

ings to relieve uncertainty of big ticket, unexpected expenses.

6. If you are planning to be in a lower income situation

next year, move as much income from other sources as possible forward to 2021. Defer capital gains on those stock trades as necessary.

7. Pay down as much debt as possible while interest

rates are at record lows, especially consumer debt at double-digit rates.

8. Increase down payments on automobile and home

purchases.

9. Set a trend to pay more than the minimum payment

on credit cards.

10. Use the extra funds to join a big box store, like

Costco or Sams, to pay the absolute lowest unit prices on merchandise. If already a member, buy a used freezer to put all the savings in.

There are a number of additional ways to use this fourmonth deferral period wisely. It should not be looked at as a hassle or a trick to mess with your paycheck.

Remember: A dollar saved is a dollar earned, according to Ben Franklin. Because of inflation, a dollar today is worth more than a dollar tomorrow. Anybody shopping for meat recently can attest to that. In the end though, there are always two things certain in life: death and taxes, so do not look at this opportunity as a gift but as a holiday goose. That is always better than the gander!
