Preventing suicide — starting with myself

. E. WARREN AIR FORCE BASE, Wyo. — There is rarely a day that passes when I do not think of ending my own life.

Some days, my depression is an overwhelming weight to bear and it takes nearly everything I have just to push the thoughts away and get on with my routine.

Other days, and even on good ones, the thought creeps up out of nowhere — an insidious sense of doubt. Of worthlessness and a sense of purposelessness that whispers in my ear and tells me that I will never accomplish the goals I have set for myself. The thoughts that make me ask why I shouldn’t just call it quits and end the sadness that plagues me.

I am just one of nearly a quarter of the population who has suffered with this illness for most of my life. Just like all of them, depression is present nearly every day of every year. If this sounds familiar to you, you are not alone. There are millions in this country who know the daily struggle of depression.

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo.

— The High Frontier Honor Guard hosted its first graduation since the COVID-19 pandemic and the standup of the PetersonSchriever Garrison Sept. 1 at Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado.

The honor guard provides public and professional support to the community including retirement ceremonies and veteran funerals.

“A lot of the services we do are the last things families see regarding the military,” said Staff. Sgt. Michael Vialpando, High Frontier Honor Guard program manager.

“It's important for [families] to see us give the most respectful and proper honors they deserve.”

To become a ceremonial guardsmen at the unit, Airmen must complete a twoweek, 80 hour course that covers basic protocol and a ceremonial course that teaches the Airmen how to give the proper honors at any ceremony they support.

Vialpando said there is a high attrition rate due to the intensive training. “It's not

for everybody. When you do funerals, a lot of people can't bear the atmosphere.

You have to have thick skin to be here. We can't have someone breakdown or lose their bearing during a service.”

Seventeen Airmen completed the training and many would describe the experience as humbling.

“With my training and the support of my team, I know we’re well equipped to provide world-class support whenever we’re tasked to,” said Senior Airman Billie Fisler, High Frontier Honor Guard flight lead and distinguished graduate.

Despite the challenges 2020 has brought, the unit stays busy. In 2019, the High Frontier Honor Guard performed 473 services, 280 of those being funerals, with numbers projected to be similar at the end of this year.

Col. Jennifer Fitch, P-S GAR vice commander and presiding officer, charged the graduates to continue perfecting the skills they have learned to honor service members and their families.

“What you do is incredible and meaningful to everyone you touch with your perfection,” she said.

AUAB Airmen make history as first deployed Space Force members

AL UDEID AIR BASE, Qatar — While a sunset would usually have signaled the end of just another day at Al Udeid Air Base, Qatar, for 20 military members the golden hour glow seemed to symbolize the promise of a new beginning.

Enlisted and commissioned Airmen assigned to the 16th Expeditionary Space Control Flight and the 609th Air Operations Center joined the U.S. Space Force during enlistment and oath of office ceremonies at the Silent Sentry compound Sept. 1, 2020.

“For our nation, we must not just be present in space, but we must

be a leader in space.”

The ceremonies transferred Space Operations officers and Airmen in core space career fields such as space operations and space systems operations to the United States’ newest military service in more than 70 years. Future ceremonies will induct professionals from common career fields such as acquisition, intelligence, engineering and cyber.

“This group is making history,” said U.S. Air Force Col. Todd Benson, director of Space Forces for U.S. Air Forces Central Command. “Those participating in today’s ceremony are not only joining our nation's newest service, they are joining this service while deployed in defense of our nation. In other words, they are the first members of the United States Space Force to be deployed in support of combat operations.”

Space across the Department of Defense has traditionally focused on providing support to other domains such as land, maritime and air. The creation of the Space Force allows for a single service to focus on space as its own critical domain.

“For our nation, we must not just be present in space, but we must be a leader in space,” Benson said. “U.S. Space Command and U.S. Space Force will play a critical role in protecting our nation’s vital interests in space.”

Elevating space in line with the other traditional domains is even more important as the U.S. witnesses other nations preparing to extend conflict into space.

Senior Airman Aron Franks, one of the Airmen who participated in the ceremony, said he is looking forward to watching technology and tactics evolve as the U.S. rises to thwart adversary efforts.

As a 16th ESPCF space systems operations specialist, Franks geo-locates, characterizes and reports sources of electromagnetic interference to U.S. satellite assets.

“It’s rewarding when you get to see how your efforts are being processed or applied to the overall fight, to see our piece of the puzzle,” he said.

Tech. Sgt. Cody Hircock, the superintendent of the 16th ESPCF at AUAB, also became a member of the Space Force.

Hircock has spent his 11-and-a-half-year Air Force career in space operations positions.

He said it has been fascinating to watch his career field evolve.

“Back when I joined my first unit in 2009, I actually got to watch them launch our third satellite,” Hircock said.

“Now they have ten, so their capabilities have expanded.”

He has been assigned to his current unit for more than a year now. Hircock said he reviews old reports, comparing

“It’s been really impressive to see how much space and the need for space has expanded,” he said.

When it came time to submit his Space Force application, it was an easy decision.

“It’s what I have always known,” said Hircock. “I’ve never had a desire to do anything else and the opportunity to be on the leading edge of a completely new military branch was something I couldn’t pass up.”

Franks, Hircock and other members of the deployed space units will continue to provide space capability to the area of responsibility. While some units have already shifted to the U.S. Space Force, the ceremony the space professionals participated in marked the beginning of transferring personnel units into the Space Force.

“As they depart this ceremony and start to wear the new uniform of our service, I want them wear it with pride,” said Benson. “I could not be more proud to serve alongside them during these historic times.

LOS ANGELES AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. — The U.S. Space Force has declared Initial Operational Capability of the Electro-optical Infrared Weather System Geostationary spacecraft. EWS-G1, formerly known as GOES-13, was transferred to the U.S. Air Force by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in 2019 under an agreement between the U.S. Air Force and NOAA for Interagency Cooperation on Collection of Space-Based Environmental Monitoring Data.

“EWS-G1 is a prime example of innovation

and the leveraging of partnerships.”

Originally launched in 2006, GOES-13 provided operational weather coverage over the United States East Coast for 10 years before being replaced in the GOESEast position by GOES-16. EWS-G1 is the first Department of Defense owned geostationary weather satellite. The satellite provides timely cloud characterization and theater weather imagery to Department of Defense in the Indian Ocean region, addressing needs across Central Command and other operating theaters.

The transfer and relocation of EWS-G1 is the culmination of joint efforts between the USSF’s Space and Missile Systems Center, NOAA and National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

“EWS-G1 is a prime example of innovation and the leveraging of partnerships.

SMC partnered with NOAA and NASA to deliver critically needed Geostationary visible and infrared cloud characterization and theater weather imagery in the Indian Ocean region. This effort demonstrates speed by allowing the spacecraft to be moved and operated in the Indian Ocean region far earlier than a new satellite could be produced and fielded,” said Charlotte Gerhart, SMC’s Production Corps Low Earth Orbit Division chief. “The repurposing of GOES-13, and residual NOAA ground equipment, accomplished the mission at a fraction of the procurement cost of a brand new system.”

After the relocation maneuver, NOAA and the U.S. Space Force completed a thorough checkout of the EWS-G1 spacecraft and sensors. All criteria were met to declare the system operational and EWS-G1 is now providing weather data to DOD forecasters. NOAA will continue to operate EWS-G1 on behalf of the U.S. Space Force for its remaining life span, from the NOAA Satellite Operations Facility in Suitland, Maryland and Wallops Command and Data Acquisition Station in Virginia.

4th SOPS wins Schriever softball championship

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 4th Space Operations Squadron won the softball championship Sept. 2 at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, after a 15-12 victory in game one against the U.S. Air Force Warfare Center and a 17-11 win in the finale.

The team which advanced from the loser’s bracket needed two wins to earn the championship while the team from the winner’s bracket only required one victory.

After trailing 11-4 in game one and 9-3 in game two, the 4th SOPS came back to win both games. In the top of the fifth in game one, the 4th SOPS used a nine-run inning to build a 13-11 lead and gained the advantage after a two-run home run by Master Sgt. Bryan Scroggs, 4th SOPS first sergeant.

“This was a team effort and our

team never gives up.”

“Getting the lead was not my doing alone,” said Scroggs.

“This was a team effort and our team never gives up. It doesn’t matter the score, we’ll always come out on top because we never quit.”

The 4th SOPS added a pair of runs in the sixth to get 15 for the game and held USAFWC to one run in the final two innings.

In game two, USAFWC built another large lead and went ahead 9-3 after two innings. First Lt. Joel Boxberger, 4th SOPS flight commander, said they used the same mindset in game two to remain in the contest.

“We kept positive and our biggest thing was to get base hits,” Boxberger said. “We knew if everyone did their job, everything would work out for us.”

The 4th SOPS found momentum in the third inning and scored seven runs to take a 10-9 lead. But USAFWC reclaimed control after scoring two runs in the bottom of the third to make it 11-10 heading into the fourth.

The back and forth with the lead ended after the 4th SOPS scored five runs in the fourth inning to build a 15-11 lead. They added another pair of runs in the sixth inning to make it 17-11.

The 4th SOPS’s defense shut out USAFWC in the final three innings to stave off a comeback and earn the title.

“This was a good team effort from us,” Boxberger said.

“Having 10 players out there, getting defensive stops and all of us making plays [was how we won].”

The victory was a reversal in fortune for the 4th SOPS. Last season in the title game, the unit advanced from the winner’s bracket and needed one win to earn the title. The 1st SOPS, however, won consecutive games to earn the championship. Boxberger said it felt good to avenge their defeat from 2019.

“It was a redemption year for us,” Boxberger said.

“Knowing that we not only deserved to be in the championship game, but also getting back-to-back wins and proving we belonged out here feels great.”

But I do not and I will not allow this disease to define me — and I ask anyone reading this who might be going through hard times to do the same. Maybe your situation is different. Maybe post-traumatic stress disorder haunts you and the things you’ve seen and experienced make you never want to open your eyes again. Maybe the stress of your job or your life seems to be too much to bear and you can’t see any end in sight. Overwhelming anxiety. Brain injury. The effects of substance abuse. Many different mental troubles can lead to suicidal ideation, which can complicate finding a solution for an individual thinking about hurting themselves.

Whatever personal challenge you’re fighting, please do everything you can to remind yourself that life is worth living. It’s a challenge and often even a struggle, absolutely. But, no matter what you’re struggling through, there are people who care about you with the resources available to help guide you through the darkness.

“You may be the one to save a life.”

Whether it’s an anonymous phone call to a hotline, a visit a chaplain or a whole host of options in between, there are people — real people — out there who want to bring you back from the brink and help you realize that life is too precious to turn your back on. I have lost three people I considered friends — including one as close to me as a brother — to suicide. I will never forget the day I received the message that he died. It has stuck with me for 11 years now, a dull ache of loss for a friend torn away too soon. I ask myself if there was more I could have done to keep him from this end. He, and each of the others, left holes in those left behind when they died, and they are missed terribly by many people every day, even 11 years later.

For those of you who have made it this far and cannot relate to anything written above, I have a request for you as well. Go to https://www.af.mil/Suicide-Prevention/ and read about some of the programs and other resources available. If you see someone who’s clearly not themselves, struggling with some unseen torture, ask them how they’re doing. Ask them to get coffee or grab lunch. Sometimes all it takes to support someone in this situation is just being there.

I’ll bring this to a close with this: Suicide is an epidemic among military members and veterans, with those individuals at higher risk and taking their lives in higher numbers than the national average. If someone you know is showing signs of self-harm or you feel their life may be in danger, get help and don’t leave that individual alone.

September is Suicide Prevention Month, but there is no timeline on reaching out to someone in need and you can learn how to be more aware of the subtle signs shown by those at risk twelve months a year. You may be the one to save a life.

DoD moves from FOUO to CUI

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The Department of Defense recently adopted “Controlled Unclassified Information” as the identifier for sensitive information.

The Secretary of the Air Force and Administrative Assistant for Security issued Air Force Guidance Memorandum 202016-01 July 23 to implement the new CUI policy.

The rebranding of CUI highlights a change in process rather than policy, said Doug Peacock, Schriever Information Protection Information Security specialist.

“What we’re trying to do is establish a starting point to acknowledge what CUI is, how to mark it and how to protect it,” Peacock said. “Sometimes people just push the FOUO button on the email because they don’t want their email to be locked out. They’d overprotect rather than properly protect and the DoD wanted to better control that. One of the biggest changes aside from the name is [the DoD will] implement an indicator box you have to put on your documents to say why something is marked CUI.” Emails will have a ‘CUI’ marking at the top and bottom of the page to indicate sensitive information in the text.

Peacock said those who want to be thorough can do portion markings in emails containing CUI. Portion markings are shown when each paragraph of the email is marked and explains why the information is CUI and provides the reader with details of why it’s sensitive.

tact, the name of the office creating the document, who it can be sent to and what category of CUI the content belongs.

“There’s now a registry you have to go to and find the law and regulation that specifically meets CUI requirements,” said John Hladky, Peterson IP Information Security Program manager. “Instead of people haphazardly marking information as FOUO, people now have to go to the registry to

understand why something is CUI.” The DoD registry indicates numerous categories of CUI, which include security classification and declassification guides, agricultural and health operations, cyber security defense information and more.

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency and Center for Development of Security Excellence are working to develop a CUI training expected to be completed this month. The training will then be required annually Until training is available and a CUI button is created, DAF personnel can continue to mark FOUO content as such and are not required to take any other training. “[Moving to CUI] won’t be an overnight change; it’ll be a process to get people used to it,” Peacock said. “We’re working with the 50th Space Communications Squadron and the folks at the cyber security office. They’re working through their channels saying that a new change to Outlook and the [Digital Signature Enforcement Tool] is forthcoming and will change those buttons. To change that Air Forcewide is a lengthy process.”
