DAF announces mandatory COVID vaccine implementation guidelines for Airmen, Guardians Staff Report

dose of a one-dose vaccine. This includes one or two-dose options authorized under EUA or full FDA approval.

Airmen and Guardians who have proof of vaccination documented in their medical records per this definition will be considered as meeting the vaccination requirement.

Prior to receiving the COVID-19 vaccine, service members have access to healthcare providers and chaplains to address questions or concerns with COVID-19 vaccination. Additionally, commanders must consult with their servicing Staff Judge Advocate for additional guidance on vaccination noncompliance.

WASHINGTON — Secretary of the Air Force Frank Kendall directed the COVID-19 vaccine implementation guidelines for Department of the Air Force total force military members Sept. 3, in accordance with the Secretary of Defense mandate last month.

The service implementation plan requires Airmen and Guardians to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by the following dates, unless seeking an exemption: • Nov. 2 — Active Duty personnel • Dec. 2 — Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve personnel Vaccinations will help ensure service members’ health and safety while preserving the department’s readiness and ability to execute worldwide air and space forces missions, according to department leaders.

“We are taking an aggressive approach to protect our service members, their families and their communities from COVID-19 and the highly transmissible Delta variant,” said Under Secretary of the Air Force Gina Ortiz Jones. “As members of the nation’s Armed Forces, our Airmen and Guardians must be able to respond to situations around the globe — being fully vaccinated will help us safely meet the readiness requirements that our national security depends on.”

Mandatory vaccination through a military provider will initially only include the Pfizer-BioNTech mRNA COVID-19® vaccine (widely referred to as “Comirnaty®” upon receipt of FDA approval), which is currently the only vaccine approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Airmen and Guardians may continue

to volunteer to receive the COVID-19 vaccines approved under Emergency Use Authorization (EUA), including Moderna, Janssen and AstraZeneca, from both military and civilian providers.

Service members are considered fully vaccinated two weeks after completing the second dose of a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine, or two weeks after receiving a single

The process for obtaining exemptions for all mandatory vaccinations is provided in AFI 48-110_IP, Immunizations and Chemoprophylaxis for the Prevention of Infectious Diseases, for medical exemptions, and DAFI 52-201, Religious Freedom in the Department of the Air Force, for religious accommodations. No exemptions from the vaccine will be approved solely because Airmen and Guardians have an approved retirement or separation date.

Vaccination noncompliance Any refusal to receive the COVID-19 vaccine, absent an approved exemption or accommodation, may be punishable under the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ).

Military commanders retain the full range of disciplinary options available to them under the UCMJ. For more information, Airmen and Guardians are encouraged to work with their chains of command and their local military treatment facilities.

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 21st Medical Group, Guardian Holistic Operational Support Team (GHOST) at Schriever Air Force Base supports Airmen and Guardians through resiliency resources.

The mission of GHOST, formerly known as the Space Team for Airmen Resilience (STAR), is to provide mission-readiness physical, spiritual and psychological support to Airmen and Guardians through reliable and accessible embedded engagement at the unit level.

“Being this close to the mission and having an understanding of what Guardians need in terms of resource has been a huge advantage,” U.S. Space Force Tech. Sgt. Walker Jean-Philippe, 21st MDG, GHOST

operational support flight chief. “We’ve been able to positively impact the barriers to care by simply meeting Guardians in the work space.”

“STAR, now GHOST was originally envisioned by Gen. John “Jay” Raymond to address harmful coping mechanisms related to operational stressors experienced by space operators along the four pillars of comprehensive fitness: mental, physical, social and spiritual,” said U.S. Air Force Col. Raymond Clydesdale, U.S. Space Force deputy command surgeon.

This USSF program includes a physical therapist, flight physician assistant, clinical psychologist, clinical social worker, mental health technician, chaplain and a religious affairs Airman.

The GHOST team currently supports Space Delta 8 — Satellite Communications and Navigational Warfare

and Space Delta 9 — Orbital Warfare along with the 3rd Space Experimental Squadron.

This unique team is the first embedded team in the USSF. Additionally, USSF seeks to provide embedded teams to Deltas at each installation and is negotiating with the Air Force Medical Service on developing and resourcing more embedded teams.

“GHOST is designed to be a ‘permanent’ embedded operational support; whereas traditional medical group operational support teams are ‘transient’ embedded operational support by moving between an installation’s units every few months,” said Clydesdale.

ulation, to develop trust and rapport with that same population, and to optimize pilot performance for mission success.

GHOST strives for the same among the Guardian population.”

Although there are other base resources that address the four pillars of comprehensive fitness, they do not exist in an operationally secure environment as GHOST does.

Prior to the name change, 66 of 100 Guardians in the STAR pilot program noted in an internal survey they would not have used the base services if the STAR mission did not exist.

“Historically, military members have had a fear of going to mental health out of concern for reprisal or possibly losing clearances,” said U.S. Space Force Maj. Lauren Taylor, DEL 8, 2nd Space Operations Squadron director of operations. “Garrison support for GHOST ensures people understand that taking care of health and welfare is a priority.”

Ultimately, GHOST allows Airmen and Guardians to live a more balanced life by having immediate access to care and eliminate the process of scheduling and waiting for an appointment to be available.

“As the general public has rightly focused more attention to mental health issues over the past several decades, garrison support for GHOST is important to show the military can innovate and adapt to the issues its members are struggling with today,” said U.S. Space Force Capt. Collin Dart, DEL 8, 2nd Space Operations Squadron assistant director of sustainment.

Currently, there are ongoing discussions at different levels of leadership to figure out a way to expand the same resources GHOST provides to all of the deltas that have a need for them.

To wear or not to wear, that is the question

PETERSON SPACE FORCE BASE, Colo. — In the ever changing world of Air Force Instructions and memorandums from leadership, it can be difficult to be completely confident in your uniform configuration. If you’re a Guardian or Airman who falls under the U.S. Space Force, what do you wear?

“Uniforms are distinctive,” said acting first sergeant Space Delta 2 — Space Domain Awareness Master Sgt. Timothy Tichawa. “We wear patches to signify that members belong to a unit, but in doing so they also take pride in owning their part of the unit.

In my personal opinion, I think it’s a great way to be bold as we build the culture of this new service.”

If you are an Airman with no space ties, the answer is pretty simple: check the latest update to AFI 36-2903, and you are good to go. For Airmen under Peterson-Schriever Garrison or USSF Guardians, things get a little more complicated.

Some uniform expectations for Guardians have been outlined in USSF Guidance Memo 2020-36-01, but full uniform guidance is still in the works.

USSF members will: • Wear a full colored U.S. flag on the left sleeve.

• Wear the higher headquarters patch below the U.S. flag on the left sleeve.

• Wear the unit patch (if available) on the right sleeve.

Guardians are authorized to wear full color and PVC patches.

This graphic was created to be used as a quick reference guide for all Peterson-Schriever Garrison Airmen and Guardians. There are distinct differences between Air Force and Space Force uniform instructions, including the use of different colored American flags and where higher headquarters patches are placed.

PRESENTED BY:

• Wear the higher headquarters patch on the left sleeve.

• Wear a spice brown U.S. flag on the right sleeve.

• Wear the unit patch (if available) under the flag on their right sleeve.

• No more than two patches on the right sleeve.

• May wear duty shields on the approved duty list, found in AFI- 36-2903.

Optional • May wear duty arches that are required for quick identification.

• May wear earned and awarded patches from other services in accordance with that services regulations.

Airmen who fall under a USSF unit or higher headquarters may wear colored unit or higher headquarters patches, instead of spice brown, but colored flags are not authorized for Airmen at all. Morale patches are not currently approved for Airmen or Guardians, but it is anticipated that they may be approved in the upcoming October AFI update.

“The pride and detail that an Airman or a Guardian put into the way they present themselves speaks to their character and professionalism,” said Tichawa. “Our uniforms are the most distinctive way we are seen by the American people. The tax payers of this country expect a high level of professionalism from military members, and the easiest way we respect that is in the way we all wear our uniform.”

Firefly Alpha terminated mid-flight Staff Report Space Launch Delta 30 Public Affairs

VANDENBERG SPACE FORCE BASE, Calif.

— Space Launch Delta 30 terminated the Firefly Aerospace Inc., Alpha rocket over the Pacific Ocean at 7:01 p.m. Pacific Time after a successful lift off at 6:59 p.m. Pacific Time from Space Launch Complex-2 at Vandenberg SFB Sept. 2.

There were no injuries associated with the anomaly.

A team of investigators will convene to determine the cause of the failure.

We live in fast times ­— both at home and at work. With everything going on around us between stressors and the distractions of our environments, it is easy to glance over the small details. When we miss the small details at work we begin to lose focus on addressing hazards that can lead to injuries. We see our work areas every day but what details are we not paying attention to? What hazards are we either missing or being complacent with? What details or information are we missing in our work procedures? The honest answer is: probably more than we want to admit.

How Can We Improve Our Observations?

First, we need to take the proper time to do a thorough observation of objects, tools, equipment, and the work environment for a work task. Being observant is a skill, but we also need to make a conscious effort to dedicate the time to evaluate the work area around us. Walk around your work area view it from different perspectives. Focus on details that you normally skim over.

Use past experiences, lessons learned, safety shares or training to identify potential hazards.

Try putting yourself in someone else’s shoes such as your unit’s safety rep or supervisor. What things in the work area would they have an issue with or want corrected? Really get picky about the details of your work environment. Be honest about what is a hazard in your work area and what it would take to fix it. The little details can contribute to the next incident or injury.
