Combined Force Space Component Command established at Vandenberg AFB tactical control over globally dispersed Air Force, Army, and Navy space units that command satellites in every orbital regime.

“It is an honor and privilege to take command of CFSCC. We are at the dawning of a new, exciting, and challenging era for space; and CFSCC will lead USSPACECOM’s efforts to better integrate space warfighting effects into the operations of terrestrial warfighters,” Whiting said. “Through our tactical units and operations centers, CFSCC will provide space capabilities such as space situational awareness, space electronic warfare, satellite communications, missile warning, nuclear detonation detection, environmental monitoring, military ISR, navigation warfare, command and control, and PNT in support of USSPACECOM and the other combatant commands.”

As one of its primary roles, CFSCC will plan, task, direct, monitor and assess the execution of combined and joint space operations for theater effects on behalf of the commander of USSPACECOM to directly support ongoing operations in other combatant commands.

CFSCC will also provide support to, and receive support from, partner coalition operations centers including the Australian Space Operations Center, Canadian Space Operations Center, and United Kingdom Space Operations Center. Additionally, CFSCC will build capacity through coalition, commercial, and civil partnerships to achieve combined force objectives.

VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. — Gen. John W. “Jay” Raymond, Commander, U.S. Space Command, ordered the establishment of two subordinate commands to support the warfighting efforts of the command — Combined Force Space Component Command, and Joint Task Force Space Defense, immediately following the establishment of USSPACECOM Aug. 29.

Raymond appointed Maj. Gen. Stephen N. Whiting as CFSCC Commander, and Brig. Gen. Matthew W. Davidson as the Deputy Commander; with a mission to plan, integrate, conduct, and assess global space operations to deliver combat relevant space capabilities to combatant commanders, coalition partners, the joint force, and the nation.

Upon establishment, Whiting appointed Chief Master Sgt. John F. Bentivegna as the CFSCC senior enlisted leader. Bentivegna will advise the commander on matters influencing the health, welfare, morale and effective use of more than 17,000 CFSCC personnel.

CFSCC will plan and execute space operations through four distinct and geographically dispersed operations centers, including: the Combined Space Operations Center at Vandenberg AFB, California; Missile Warning Center at Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station, Colorado; Joint Overhead Persistent Infrared Center at Buckley AFB, Colorado; and Joint Navigation Warfare Center at Kirtland AFB, New Mexico. In the above scenario, calling it an accident allows us to avoid accountability and ignore consequences. If it isn’t our fault, we don’t have to feel bad and our behavior doesn’t have to change. This is a somewhat selfish and immature way of thinking. It stunts our development. It hold us back from reaching our full capability as leaders at home, work and in the community.

On the other hand, acknowledging the purposefulness of our actions and resulting consequences leads to a greater sense of conscientiousness and awareness of how

ATRICK AIR FORCE BASE, Florida — You’ve probably heard the words, “I’m sorry, it was an accident” or some variation countless times throughout your life. I have five kids, so I hear it way too often.

I know I’ve used the phrase more than I’d like to admit, and after careful deliberation, I’m purposefully trying to eliminate the phrase from my thinking and will try to retrain my kids as well. Hopefully, after reading this commentary, you will want to do the same.

An accident is defined as “any event that happens unexpectedly, without a deliberate plan or cause.”

The way it is commonly used today generally implies something “wasn’t my fault.” We use it as an excuse — a way to avoid taking responsibility or avoid being blamed — when the results of our actions don’t match up with our intentions.

Consider this example. My kids run in the house all the time. My wife and I tell them not to, but they get excited and still run periodically despite our best efforts to explain the dangers and enforce our standards. Sometimes they will run into each other and ultimately someone gets hurt. When this happens, you might be tempted to think of this as an accident, but it is not. While they did not intend to collide, they still chose to run despite the risk. They did it on purpose.

Start doing things on purpose and set the example for your family, peers, employees, and maybe even your boss. our actions affect ourselves and others. Being “on purpose” means we accept the collision occurred because we ran.

We accept that the pain our sibling felt is because we ran.

viding an officer to serve as the deputy director of the CSpOC. The U.K. is a close ally and trusted partner in space; and we are looking forward to additional allies and partners joining OOD in the near future. We are unequivocally stronger together.”

On July 18 the former U.K. defense secretary announced the U.K. formally accepted the U.S. invitation to join OOD; and the U.K.’s intentions to send additional U.K. personnel to join other international space operators at the CSpOC at Vandenberg AFB. Space operators from Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom are currently stationed at Vandenberg AFB, working alongside U.S. space operators in CFSCC’s CSpOC. Additionally, national liaisons from France, Germany, and the United Kingdom are stationed at Vandenberg AFB in USSPACECOM’s Multinational Space Collaboration office.

“Space has become exponentially more congested, contested, and degraded domain during the past several decades.

Due to emerging threats, and advances in technology, it’s imperative that we partner with allies and like-minded nations to preserve access to space, and leverage coalition space capabilities to ensure warfighters down range have the systems they need to defeat the threats they’re facing,” Bentivegna said. “The establishment of the CFSCC is the result of years of working alongside allies and partners in and through space. The 19-year-old will serve as a lifeguard ensuring the safety of guests in a water-park atmosphere. “I’m so excited to be working with kids,” said Jazmyne.

“This has always been a part of my career goals and this feels like a step-up.”

Mt. Carmel Peer Navigator Tandy Zerfoss helped Jazmyne with her job search. The two accomplished a great deal in just days: job interview preparation, resume development, career mentorship, and a tailored job search leading to successful first and second interviews with Jazmyne’s new employer.

“I was anxious walking into that second interview; I knew I had to present myself as being highly-qualified,” said Jazmyne. “by meeting someone inperson for an interview, I felt I had a better chance to be successful.”

Prior to working with Mt. Carmel, Jazmyne hadn’t had much luck with her job search. She credits her peer navigator’s support as crucial to her success.

“Tandy knew me and was always helping with a customized job search and she handed me opportunities that worked for me; she knew my career goals and helped me attain them.”

“It doesn’t matter what your career is, but we only take the highest performers to make sure we are performing at an elite level. It’s important to be extremely competent in our career field because we’re impacting human lives.”

Williams said OSI agents take their jobs very seriously.

“If we’re not investigating cases thoroughly then we’re letting down the Air Force and negatively impacting the mission,” he added.

Williams said there are different types of agents, including polygraph, cyber,

protective services and forensic science agents.

“Despite all the specialties we have, it’s important to remember everyone in OSI is an agent first, their specialty comes second,” he said.

Williams said the job isn’t how Hollywood makes it seem.

“We’re not kicking in doors every day, there aren’t bombs going off,” he said.

“It’s not as glamorous as TV makes it seem, but we still sit down and talk to people, conduct interviews and work with forensic agents to analyze evidence, they got that part right.”

Williams said OSI is here to serve members of the installation.

“We’re not out to get people,” he said.

“We’re here to serve the base and keep the personnel safe through our criminal and counter intelligence operations.”

Airmen return from mission trip with perspective, gratitude

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — “Service before self is that virtue within us all, which elevates the human spirit, compels us to reach beyond our meager selves to attach our spirit to something bigger than we are,” said retired Gen. John P. Jumper, 17th Air Force Chief of Staff.

Every Airman is charged to exemplify the Air Force core values; which inspired Senior Airman William Nash, 50th Comptroller Squadron financial services officer, to volunteer for a mission trip to Jamaica.

Nash said he attended the mission trip because he wanted to do something selfless, bigger than himself.

“While we were in Jamaica, we worked on the Worthington Friends Church and we also constructed an additional building, an annex,” he said. “The additional building is to be used for worship, Sunday school and prayer.”

Nash said the labor was sometimes difficult.

“During the six days we were there, we put up dry wall, plastered the walls, we painted the walls, caulked the windows and even worked with concrete,” he said. “The work was hard, but it was rewarding.”

Lt. Col. William Spencer, former 21st Space Wing chaplain, lead the mission trip.

“What’s amazing to me is how diverse this trip was,” he said. “We had Airmen of different ages, careers, bases and cultural backgrounds attend. To me, that shows our desire to serve is intrinsic.”

Nash said the trip was humbling and he is grateful he went with 12 others who shared similar values.

“It reminded me of my deployment,” he said. “The relationships created with others who attended are unique. When you eat, sleep and work together all day, it forms a really powerful bond.” continued page 7 | VOLUNTEER

“It really alters your perspective,” Nash said.

“This trip helped me understand it is a privilege to have clean clothing, a bed to sleep in and a shelter to protect you from the weather.”

Nash said despite the long days, the work was fulfilling.

“Besides the construction, we also volunteered at an elderly person’s home, where we offered food, told stories and even just gave hugs,” he said.

“Everyone is human, and despite where you’re from, you deserve to be treated like one.”

Spencer said serving others is a part of being human.

“As human beings, we have a hunger to serve — it’s a part of our DNA,” he said. “We’re made to serve, not to be served and when you get uncomfortable and put the needs of others first, you will usually find your own needs and issues will be solved.”

Nash said he is very grateful to have been able to attend the trip.

“We always hear about the core values, but do we always practice them?” Nash said. “Having a chance to practice [service before self] in such a large way was a really good feeling.”

Spencer said serving in the military is honorable, but going beyond that is rewarding.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — In a move to enhance the United States’ space superiority capabilities, President Donald J. Trump, Vice President Mike R. Pence, Secretary of Defense Dr. Mark T. Esper, and Air Force Gen. John W. “Jay” Raymond formally established U.S. Space Command during a ceremony Aug. 29 at the White House.

At the direction of the president, the Department of Defense established U.S. Space Command today as the 11th Unified Combatant Command with Raymond as its congressionally confirmed commander. Establishing USSPACECOM is a critical step that underscores the importance of the space domain and its strategic contributions to U.S. national security.

The USSPACECOM establishment will accelerate the United States’ space capabilities to address rapidly evolving threats to U.S. space assets and the importance of deterring potential adversaries from putting critical U.S. space systems at risk.

“The scope, scale and complexity of today’s threat is real and it is concerning,” Raymond said. “The establishment of a combatant command solely focused on the space domain, demonstrates the United States’ commitment to protecting and defending its space assets against that threat.”

The president’s National Security Strategy and the National Strategy for Space highlight space as a strategic domain and the United States must earn and maintain space superiority.

The new command will modernize and enhance the military’s approach to space from a domain of an unchallenged environment to one of a warfighting domain.

The USSPACECOM mission is to deter aggression and conflict, defend U.S. and allied freedom of action, deliver space combat power for the joint/ combined force, and develop joint warfighters to advance U.S. and allied interests in, from and through the space domain. The command will be postured to protect and defend, while increasing joint warfighter lethality by executing two primary missions focused on 1) unifying and leading space capabilities for the combined force, and 2) maintaining U.S. and

allied advantages in space through protection and defense.

USSPACECOM is a geographic combatant command with a global area of responsibility defined as the area surrounding the earth at altitudes equal to or greater than 100 kilometers above mean (average) sea level. The new command is globally integrated with the other geographic combatant commands and prepared to support partners to meet today’s threat on a global scale.

“Our space capabilities underpin the security of our great nation, enable our economic prosperity, provide for our way of life, and secure our way of war,” Raymond said. “In fact, there is nothing we do as a joint and coalition force that isn’t enabled by space. Our adversaries understand this and are moving fast to develop their own robust space capabilities and to develop weapons designed to deny us the use of space and the advantage they provide.”

“This afternoon, by establishing United States Space Command, singularly focused on that warfighting domain, we send a very clear message to the world that the United States and our allies will not assume away space superiority,” he concluded.

From establishment to full operational capability, Raymond will remain dual-hatted as the commander of Air Force Space Command and U.S. Space Command.

It is generally understood that in our modern culture, the human brain doesn’t mature to this basic level of understanding consequence(s) until about age 25. The good news is we can accel-

erate progress toward this skill earlier in life and develop even greater levels of cognitive skill, at all ages, through intentional development of a more conscientious mindset. The bad news is that we have to be willing to feel the pain as we learn through the experience.

Next time you find yourself in position where things didn’t go as expected, instead of defensively calling it an accident, take ownership of it and simply apologize. An example might sound like this: “I’m sorry I did this. I was trying to

accomplish [insert your objective], and I did not foresee [insert situation] would occur. I didn’t intend for anyone to get hurt and I’ll try to be better next time by [insert a way to mitigate the risk].”

It is a useful exercise in nearly all situations, not just when someone gets hurt physically.

Thinking things through in this way, to understand the impact of your actions, will make you a more critical thinker, better communicator, and a more effective leader. Ultimately, the
