RITISH INDIAN OCEAN TERRITORY — “Let me be very clear, although space is clearly a warfighting domain, we do not want to fight a fight that extends into space. We seek to deter that conflict, and the best way I know how to do that is through a position of strength.” — Gen. John “Jay” Raymond, commander of U.S. Space Command.

Listening to Raymond’s remarks recognizing the establishment of U.S. Space Command reminded me of a passage from “The Art of War” by Sun Tzu: “Supreme excellence consists in breaking the adversary’s resistance without fighting.”

I strongly believe that to accomplish the latter we must win tomorrow’s conflict today.

As warfighters in an age of one-day delivery and instant information, we must continue to focus on the long-term position of strength when the luxury of instantaneous is taken from us. Posturing to experience the win of the immediate battle isn’t good enough. We must also glean into the horizon and take into account tomorrow’s evolving conflict; where the rewards of winning is not through instant relief, but steadfast resolve.

We must continually develop our strategic position, unified with our partners and allies to a point where warfare, especially in the space domain, is not a viable option to

our adversary. We must win tomorrow’s conflict today.

As warfighters we must continually challenge ourselves to a position of long-term strength, maintaining a warrior ethos, focused and prepared in a position where the fight is already won before it begins.

In an era of instant results, unrelenting connectivity, and where real-time feedback is the norm, it can be a tough concept to plan, prepare and posture where “supreme excellence” is eventually measured in silent concession.

This concept takes initiative, persistence and bold leaders

breaking the adversary’s resistance without fighting.” from all ranks who are not risk averse. These leaders must be quick to posture, steadfast in their resolve, and flexible for tomorrow’s environment.

4th SOPS improves space warfighting capabilities

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 4th Space Operations Squadron completed the first successful on-orbit testing of the Wideband Global SATCOM-10 satellite at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, Aug. 26-28.

First Lt. Brady Weaver, 4th SOPS weapons and tactics operator, said the capabilities of the WGS-10 satellite are used across the world.

“WGS primarily affects the Department of Defense as well as allied nations” he said. “Senators, congressmen, the president and other government agencies use it for secure communications and data transfer, as well as military forces.”

First Lt. David Lacourrege, 4th Space Operations Squadron weapons and tactics operator, said WGS-10 is the newest iteration of wideband SATCOM satellites.

Weaver said the 4th SOPS stays mission

ready around the clock.

“The satellite has an extremely high data throughput,” he said. “It can support [unmanned aerial vehicle] feeds, allows for multiple modes of commanding, and it has a digital channelizer on board that provides seamless translation between frequencies. This allows for jam-resistant communication for tactical users and allows operators to more easily command the satellite in a quick time frame” Lacourrege said WGS provides satellite communications in X and Ka frequency bands.

“The X and Ka bands fall on the electromagnetic spectrum and are very specific frequency ranges designed for satellite communications,” he said. “User terminals operate in that band of the spectrum and it allows for greater data throughput.”

Lacourrege said the 4th SOPS tested three tactics which are skip burn, manual maneuver and surface area decrease.

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Former President Harry S. Truman signed the National Security Act, establishing the Air Force as a separate, independent military service, July 26, 1947. On Sept. 18, 1947, the Air Force was officially established.

This year marks the 72nd birthday of the United States Air Force, and the theme, “Frontiers of Blue…This is 72!” focuses on heritage, warfighting capability and innovation.

“Our heritage officially started in 1947, but our roots reach farther back,” said acting Secretary of the Air Force Matthew Donovan. “Our story began with a garage startup, two bicycle mechanics, and an airplane. Today we’re going faster, higher and smarter than ever before in air, space and cyberspace domains.”

Donovan, Gen. David Golfein, Air Force Chief of Staff and Chief Master Sgt. Kaleth O. Wright of the Air Force, said the key to warfighting success is working alongside joint partners and allies in every corner of the world, on every mission, across multidomain operations.

“Breaking barriers through innovation takes top talent, and Airmen are our most valuable resource,” they said. “The success

of our Air Force hinges on the professionalism, dedication, skill and heroism of each of you. To win future conflicts we must be bold, continue to seek out innovators and develop leaders who will deliver the competitive edge we need for tomorrow.”

Paul Aldrich, 50th Space Wing director of small business programs, said celebrating the Air Force’s birthday helps shed light and remembrance of when the Air Force became its own branch of service.

“It’s been over 70 years, and look at all the accomplishments the Air Force has made over these years,” he said.

Aldrich mentioned the impact Schriever Air Force Base and other bases in Colorado have made across the world.

“Here in Colorado we track Santa via our satellites,” he said. “There has also been two presidents who served in the Air Force [Army Air Forces], Reagan and George W. I have been proud to serve over 20 years. The future is so bright for all of us.”

Both Aldrich and Wright emphasized the importance of the younger generation’s part in the bigger picture that is the Air Force.

“You and your families are woven into the fabric of this great heritage and we are honored to serve alongside you,” Donovan, Goldfein and Wright said. “Join us in wishing a happy 72nd birthday to the United States Air Force.”

“The testing of these three tactics allowed better response, initiated greater effects for customers, maintained mission capabilities and the survivability of our assets,” he said. “Our tactics allow us to maintain our mission here despite a contested space environment.”

Lacourrege said despite it being the first live onorbit testing of three tactics by the squadron, the 4th SOPS was prepared for the testing.

“Before the testing, our Boeing technical advisors performed simulations of the activities we would be doing to ensure they would be safe,” he said.

Schriever senior leader helps defenders check IDs

The 4th SOPS wasn’t the only unit involved in the testing.

“The 4 SOPS coordinated tactics, techniques and procedures tests with other units across the Department of Defense,” he said. “However, 4 SOPS is the primary unit that performed the on-orbit tests.”

Weaver said the testing resulted in the best possible outcome.

“This test gave us confirmation we can effectively utilize tactics, techniques and procedures given a sort response time.”

Weaver said the 4th SOPS stays mission ready around the clock.

“Even though 4 SOPS is a MILSATCOM unit that is sometimes seen as a service provider, this test shows we are capable of performing in a contested, degraded and operationally limited environment, and we’re continuing to improve our warfighting capabilities every day,” he said.

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Two Schriever Airmen were recognized by Brig. Gen. DeAnna Burt, Headquarters Air Force Space Command director of operations and communications, at the conclusion of Space Flag 19-3 at Aerospace Corporation’s facility, Colorado, in August.

Staff Sgt. Zachary Beachy, 1st Space Operations Squadron orbital analyst, and 1st Lt. Joseph Shiver, 4th Space Operations Squadron mission planner, were both highlighted as superior performers during the week-long exercise.

Beachy said Space Flag is an exercise conducted three times a year, allowing space operators to maneuver in a robust, physics-based modeling and simulation environment.

This particular iteration was significant because of attendance from Vice Chief of Staff of the U.S. Air Force Gen. Stephen “Steve” Wilson, and other senior space military leaders from the United States, Australia, Canada and Great Britain, making Space Flag 19-3 the first exercise with coali-

tion partners in Air Force Space Command’s, Fight Tonight, exercise.

“The exercise focused on using current capabilities to deter, deny and disrupt adversarial actions in the space domain, going over tactics we could use and applying them against a [simulated threat],” Beachy said.

Beachy said his job during the exercise was to come up with maneuver plans, offensive and defensive tactics for the Geosynchronous Space Situational Awareness Program to use if a war in space ever occurred.

“Our exercise consisted of scenarios emulating various stages of warfare,” he said. “It requires [our teams] to brainstorm and create solutions in real-time situations.”

Capt. Christopher Hatzl, 1st SOPS mission planning cell chief and Beachy’s supervisor, said Beachy showcased the 50th Space Wing priority of innovating and executing today’s operations during the exercise. “[Beachy] oversaw the execution of multiple orbital engagements in three different scenarios against simulated

Beachy said the environment created during the exercise allowed him to showcase his intimate knowledge of orbital mechanics.

“It can be easy to gloss over the finer details of orbital mechanics when it isn’t in your wheelhouse,” he said. “I think being allowed to speak my mind on orbital mechanics helped in being recognized for my performance.”

Beachy said it’s not just about him, the recognition also reflects highly upon the 50th SW and 1st SOPS. “We all work very hard to accomplish our mission,” he said. “If you think about it, 20 years ago an enlisted Airman would not be in my position.”

50th SW CC visits New Boston AFS

Chaplain’s office invites Schriever to walk with purpose By 2nd Lt. Idalí Beltré Acevedo 50th Space Wing Public Affairs

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The base chaplain’s office is hosting their first prayer walk, Walk with a Purpose, at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, Sept. 20.

Capt. Lauren Hughes, 50th Space Wing chaplain, organized the event to allow the Schriever community a venue for spiritual growth and resilience while meditating, focusing on mindfulness and praying about different topics affecting Airmen.

The initiative comes from Maj. Gen. Steven Schaick, chief of chaplains, who asked Air Force chaplain corps members to join him in a worldwide prayer stand down for the Air Force, Sept. 13-15.

The chaplain’s office invites all Airmen, independent of their beliefs, as this is an event focused on strengthening spiritual fitness, not religion.

This event helps Airmen boost their resilience and connect outside

of their workplace.

“The prayer walk gives Airmen an opportunity to exercise their spiritual muscles,” Hughes said. “It’s a collective effort for those [of all faiths] to come together and intentionally pray for our Airmen and their families. It will connect Airmen to each other, and the chapel staff, as we pray about specific topics, in our own unique ways.

Even if Airmen can’t attend the prayer walk, my hope is this event will reveal the care and concern Team Schriever has for [their] community.”

She explained how the prayer walk aligns with the chaplain corps competencies.

“The two core competencies of the chaplain corps are to provide spiritual care and advice to leadership, this event falls under our first core,” she said. “The prayer walk will give us a time to reflect over this past fiscal year and pray for guidance, resiliency and spiritual fitness in this upcoming year.”

Hughes highlighted the importance of prayer as a way to strengthen the spirit.

“In my faith tradition, prayer is essential to being spiritually fit,” she said. “One does not need to use eloquent words when speaking to God. The creator just wants us to be open and honest about our thoughts, feelings and struggles.”

Capt. Ronald Lawrence, 50th Space Wing chaplain, said this event helps Airmen boost their resilience and connect outside of their workplace.

“I believe having events like this helps us to actually come together,” he said. “When we come together we are no longer individuals working in cubicles or working in different spaces but we are individuals coming together for a common purpose and this unifies people.”

Hughes said a sense of community is important for Airmen to build resilience and overcome adversities.

“Community and unity are foundational in developing resilient Airmen,” she said. “When a person has a village of people cheering, correcting, caring for them, they tend to be able to overcome or bounce back from the hardships of life.”

• Participants will split into four groups, one group will meet at the atrium in building 210, the other three groups will meet in the restricted area at the north portal.

• Each team will walk 30 minutes and pray for topics chosen by the chapel staff.

• All the groups will start walking in unison in their respective assigned areas, each lead by a Schriever chaplain.

• The total miles walked by the four groups will equal three miles.

Reserve Citizen Airman earns Chief’s Choice award for outstanding service

Tech. Sgt. Allyx McMunn, 310th Force Support Squadron, received the Chief’s Choice award from the Colorado Springs Area Chief’s Group Sept. 6, 2019. McMunn was recognized for going above and beyond through her exemplary support to the Air Force Wounded Warrior Program. She assisted a medically-retiring Air Force Active Guard Reserve Wounded Warrior who, due to the seriousness of his medical conditions, was unable to complete his required final-out retirement actions in-person. McMunn’s persistent efforts allowed the wounded warrior’s spouse to step in and complete time-sensitive actions on his behalf.

ON BASE Fire Safety Tip: Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives — Test Yours Every Month

According to the fire prevention office, working smoke alarms can cut the chances of dying in a fire in half. The good news is a smoke alarm is inexpensive protection. Smoke alarms are available at most hardware or discount stores and are easy to install. For good coverage, install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area and on every level of the home, including the basement. Test them monthly, keep them free of dust and replace the batteries at least once a year. Smoke alarms themselves should be replaced after 10 years of service, or as recommended by the manufacturer.
