. E. WARREN AIR FORCE BASE, Wyo. — I don’t treat everyone the same…now let me explain. I do treat everyone with dignity and respect. Whether you are an airman first class or a lieutenant colonel, the squadron’s commander’s support staff or the group commander, a government civilian employee or the UPS driver dropping off a package.

What I’m getting at by saying “I don’t treat everyone the same” is it’s in my job jar to find out what motivates people to succeed and accomplish our mission. As we all know, everyone is not motivated or driven by the same thing. People react differently to the exact same phrases or words that are spoken to them.

My job as a leader in the Air Force is to find out what motivates and drives personnel as individuals — not military members, not female or male, officer or enlisted — but individuals.

Squadrons are made up of people from all different backgrounds. Some are from the country, some from the inner city; we have people from coast to coast. The military does a great job in the early stages of a person’s military career when they get everyone on the same page by sharing a common bond

of going through basic training or officer training school and becoming a part of the military.

Where we, leaders at all levels, come into play, whether that’s their first assignment or their sixth, a new base or a new squadron, is to integrate these individuals into the day-to-day life in their particular role. For some, it’s an easy transition and for others it’s not.

“People being different from one another is a good thing.”

What will happen, and this is a good thing, is their true personality will eventually materialize. This is when you get to know your folks and see what they respond well to and what they don’t.

Like everything else, there are some do’s and don’ts as you will always be professional and respectful; but, there are many continued page 8 | LEADERSHIP

Brosseau, Smicklas win 15th annual half marathon

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 50th Force Support Squadron held its 15th annual half marathon Oct. 2 with nearly 40 runners competing in the event.

Jason Brosseau, 26th Space Aggressors Squadron, won his third consecutive half marathon and clocked in at 1 hour, 25 minutes and 37 seconds, besting 39 other competitors. Gail Smicklas, Schriever Air Force Base inspector general, earned first among the women at 2:17:11.

Brosseau returned to Colorado Springs Sept. 29 from a temporary duty assignment in Hawaii and won the race despite not training for two weeks due to the state’s COVID-19 lockdown.

“If I was going to lose, this would have been the year,” he said. “I was in a hotel room and all meals were delivered and I wasn’t able to run. There was definitely a handicap going into the race.”

The 13.1 mile-event took competitors around the base’s perimeter and for half the race, the top four runners remained in close proximity. Despite the 50th FSS providing four hydration stations throughout the course, the quartet declined to use them.

“We all know the story — the top three get [gift cards], so you don’t want to be the person who stops to get water,” Brosseau said. “It becomes a war of attrition on who

can last longer and not take that pause. Those seconds could be crucial and that could have been the difference between making or breaking your race.”

Shortly after the 6-mile mark, Brosseau and Joseph Craig, 4th Space Operations Squadron, separated from

the group but neither runner could shake the other.

It wasn’t until the final 2 miles of the race Brosseau pulled away from Craig and maintained his pace to secure his third consecutive win nearly a minute ahead of Craig.

“For the last mile, if you do your job right and you pick the right spot to make your move, you can coast that last half mile or mile,” Brosseau said. “I used the last half mile to relax and take in the victory.”

For the women, Smicklas, who also won the women’s dry triathlon Sept. 25, said she took it easy leading up to the event.

“I didn’t run too much and I did a lot of walking and riding my bike,” she said. “I did the foam roller on my legs to relax my muscles and prepare for the half [marathon].”

Smicklas wasn’t nervous about the event until she drove to Schriever the morning of the race. Those nerves, however, disappeared shortly after the event began and she hit her stride.

The trail didn’t cause Smicklas much trouble until around the ninth mile when she faced a literal uphill battle.

“There was a long, upward hill and it felt like it was never ending,” Smicklas said. “It was kind of windy and there was nobody around and it felt lonely. But I knew the race was almost over and that’s what got me through it.”

The next 50th FSS event is the Turkey Trot, which begins at 3 p.m. Nov. 20. No registration is required for the 2.5-mile race.

Top Three hosts Triad Resilience Run-Walk-Crawl

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo.

— The Falcon Top Three hosted a Triad Resilience Run-Walk-Crawl event to raise money for the Remount Foundation Sept.

26, 2020, at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado.

The Remount Foundation is equine assisted learning for military, veterans and their family, according to their website.

The foundation recently hosted a resilience event for 10, 21st Comptroller Squadron Airmen.

Lt. Col. Justin Gabbard, outgoing 21st CPTS commander, and Lt. Col. Alan Burwell, 50th Operations Support Squadron commander, organized the resilience event in response to the loss of a teammate. Approximately 20 Airmen signed up to crawl, walk or run a one mile, 1.5 mile, 3.5 mile or 12 mile course; however, there was no set minimum distance.

“It was an initiative with multiple objectives,” Gabbard said. “With the stand-up of the Peterson-Schriever Garrison, we wanted to create an environment where leadership teams across both installations could meet. We also wanted to send a message to our teams that their leadership cares and raise some money for a good cause that gives back to Airmen.”

is expected to top $1,500 when all the donations are finalized.

“Our squadron has had some challenges recently,” Gabbard said. “Remount reached out to us and has allowed us to use their services. We really appreciate how they’ve taken care of our Airmen, so we wanted to give back to them.”

Although Gabbard and Burwell organized the run-walk-crawl, the Falcon Top Three sponsored the event to ensure it ran smoothly.

“We hosted the event as a private organization,” said Master Sgt. Jonathan Mollison, 21st CPTS operations superintendent and Falcon Top Three member. “We worked with [the organizers] on the logistics of setting the event up, making sure the word got out there in the right way so everyone had an opportunity to participate.”

Mollison, who is currently on crutches, walked the event. “It was incredible to be a part of,” he said. “To see so many people fired up to support a good cause is amazing

and shows just how much leadership really cares about their Airmen.”

Each participant was sponsored for each mile they either crawled, walked or run.

Sponsors donated money a minimum donation of .50 cents per mile.

The participant who logged the most miles received a plaque made of purpleheart wood with a handmade triskelion. Burwell made the triskelion, which is considered a symbol of progress, personal growth and improvement. Gabbard travelled 40 miles during a 24 hour period, the highest of any participants.

“We wanted to shape this to where anyone could participate,” Gabbard said. “If you could only run one lap, then that’s all you had to do.”

COVID-19 precautions were implemented to ensure the safety of the participants.

Airmen were provided hand sanitizer, a health and safety briefing and were required to a sign-in to limit how many Airmen were on one of the four courses at once.

“As leadership teams, we always do what we can to make sure our teammates know they’re loved and cared for,” Gabbard said. “But sometimes our teammates need care and support outside of our capabilities, which is why the funds are going to Remount. We need to do what we can to make sure Airmen at every level knows there is someone who genuinely cares for them and is willing to do whatever they can to make sure they know that.”

Airmen test fitness during dry triathlon

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 50th Force Support Squadron held its second annual dry-triathlon Sept. 25 at the base fitness center.

Bradley Radabaugh, 2nd Space Operations Squadron, placed first on the men’s side with a time of 38 minutes, 7 seconds and Gail Smicklas, Schriever Air Force Base inspector general, finished first for the women at 45:05.

Fourteen participants selected a time between 6 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. to complete a 2,000-meter row, 300 body squats and a 5K run. Competitors earned a T-shirt while the top three male and female finishers received a shirt and a $25 gift card.

“It was great to have the event and get

some normalcy again.”

“It was well put together and provided us safety with social distancing,” Radabaugh said. “It was great to have the event and get some normalcy again.”

Radabaugh finished more than two minutes faster than the male winner of the inaugural event in 2019, Brady Weaver, 4th SOPS, who finished in 40:27.

Despite Radabaugh‘s performance, he was nearly bested in the final heat of the day. Jeffrey Lucy, U.S. Space Command Joint Intelligence and Security, placed second and finished 10 seconds shy of Radabaugh’s time at 38:17 despite the major completing 300 consecutive squats.

While Radabaugh enjoyed the competition aspect of the dry triathlon, he said the event served as a method of self-improvement.

“It was just another training day,” Radabaugh said.

“I just wanted a competitive environment to train. I run a lot and I’m disciplined with my daily workouts so this was a good way to test myself to see where I’m at.”

For the women, Smicklas managed the sixth fastest time of all 14 participants and did so as the lone entry in the 10:30 a.m. slot.

She said her desire to win while having a good workout helped push her. Still Smicklas said she had to overcome a mental hurdle for one segment of the event.

“I had a little anxiety about doing 300 squats in a row since I have never done that before in my life,” Smicklas said. “I focused on my music and told myself to just keep going.”

Despite the rigors presented by the dry triathlon, Smicklas plans to compete in the upcoming 50th FSS race Friday.

“I’m looking forward to the half marathon,” she said. “The athletic events that Seth [Cannello] and his team put together are really fun, challenging and well-organized.”

The 15th annual half marathon takes place 8 a.m.

Check-in for the event must be completed by 7:45 a.m.

All finishers will receive a T-shirt and the top three male and female winners will receive gift cards.

ways to get your message to the individuals. I’ve had to get a specific squadron member’s attention by speaking loudly and more direct than I usually do in a somewhat joking manner.

I could not imagine speaking to the squadron member’s replacement the same way and getting anywhere close to the same result as a simple please and thank you is all that is needed.

I have avoided using a one-size-fits-all leadership approach my entire career.

What made me realize this was when I would give my Personnel Reliability Program spirit and intent briefing to new members in the squadron as their PRP certifying official.

I would, and still say, “Not all members respond to different life events the same.” Some people may lose a family member and need to be brought down on PRP for a period of time.

Another member may have the same

situation happen to them and they emotionally process the situation differently, and do not need to come down on PRP. This goes across the spectrum of events that can happen to people as they cope with things differently.

It made me realize that I don’t treat people the same as they are all different in their own way…again, people being different from one another is a good thing. Knowing what motivates and drives people and what they can handle and not handle has never been

more important for me than with the situation we are in today.

Some just need a “thank you,” some don’t need anything at all and others need more. I’m not saying I have this 100% down as I know I don’t, but knowing your folks and how they respond to things definitely helps in situations like a global pandemic that has taken over and changed everything we know.

For all of the folks who deploy to the field, I respect the hell out of you and thank you all for that you do!

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The kitchen is often at the center of family life, but leave your cooking unattended and you could have a serious fire on your hands. Cooking equipment is involved in roughly 150,000 home fires every year. Many of those fires start as a result of people neglecting to monitor their equipment. While a few minutes might not seem like a long time to step away from what’s cooking, that’s all it takes to start a fire that could destroy your home and harm your family.

The National Fire Protection Association is dedicating Oct. 4-10 to the theme “Serve up Fire Safety in the Kitchen.” During that week, the 21st Civil Engineer Squadron’s Fire Emergency Services personnel will educate children in the community about how kitchen fires can start and how their families can prevent these fires.

A majority of people are choosing to entertain and cook in their homes, making kitchen fire safety more prominent than ever.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, cooking fires continue to be the number one cause of home fires and home injuries, with unattended cooking as the leading cause of cooking fire casualties.

While being alert and attentive is one solution to prevent kitchen fires, fire safety officials also recommend the following safety tips: • Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, grilling, broiling or boiling food.

• Never cook while sleepy, drinking alcohol or taking medication that makes you drowsy.

Air Force reduces TA

The fiscal year limit for Military Tuition Assistance has decreased from $4,500 to $3,750, effective immediately. The credit hour limits remain the same at $250 per semester hour and $166.66 per quarter hour. All TA applications will be routed using the normal procedures on the AF Virtual Education Center, and can be submitted up to 45 days in advance of the start of the course.
