OVER AIR FORCE BASE, Del. — I remember being a kid on the playground hearing the melodic retort which traditionally followed a sizzling brickbat: “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.”

This adage seems intended to bolster resilience in the face of verbal bullying, but Zhansheng Chen, a psychology professor from the University of Hong Kong, discovered that the hurt from words can linger far longer than physical pain.

With the exponential reach of social media and the recent uptick in cyberbullying, the power you wield with your words is even more sobering.

And yet, sometimes people don’t use words to communicate but as a form of catharsis for themselves.

When I obtained my EMT license in New York City, I remember meeting many police officers who were becoming EMTs or vice versa. Their humor was dark. Disturbing, actually.

“How can you make jokes like that?” I protested. They confessed to me that if they allowed themselves to truly feel the suffering of all the people we were training to save, they wouldn’t be able to actually do the work necessary to save them.

Space Force chief battles, beats cancer

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo.

— It was a routine check-up for Chief Master Sgt. Michael Rozneck, Delta 8 special projects, when he pointed out a strange pain he was experiencing in 2019.

His doctor couldn’t explain the cause of the pain and scheduled an ultrasound two days later.

Another day passed and Rozneck received a call while celebrating his daughter’s birthday. He was instructed to report to Evans Army Community Hospital on Fort Carson Army Post, Colorado at 9 a.m. the next morning.

At the appointment, Rozneck learned that he had stage one testicular cancer, and in just two hours he would undergo emergency surgery.

“It never crosses your mind,” Rozneck said. “The doctor told me, ‘I think you have cancer,’ and I immediately started to think, ‘I’m going to die.’”

After a successful surgery, Rozneck said the doctors told him there was a 20-30% chance the cancer would return.

Then Senior Master Sgt. Michael Rozneck, 50th Operations Support Squadron superintendent, learns he earned the rank of chief master sergeant March 4, 2020, at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado. Rozneck battled and beat stage two testicular cancer after undergoing emergency surgery and 23 rounds of chemo therapy.

Through it all, he said he learned to appreciate the present and stop worrying about the past and future.

According to the American Cancer Society’s website, testicular cancer primarily affects young and middle-aged men, with the average age of diagnosis being 33. However, it has a 95% survival rate and is considered to be one of the most curable cancers.

“No matter how many times I repeated the statistics and the survival rate, my mind would still go to a dark place,” Rozneck said. “There were points in the treatment when I did not want to go and I wanted to give up.

You have to get through the next second, fight through the next minute and you’ll look back and think, ‘Why did I even think about giving up?’”

Rozneck finished his final round of chemo July 28, and learned there was no sign

“I’m not a gambling man,” he said. “I guess I got unlucky because the cancer came back.”

After learning of the cancer’s return about a year later, Rozneck decided to begin chemotherapy in June. However, this time the cancer had spread to two of his lymph nodes and was now stage two.

“It was the worst and most difficult thing

Rozneck endured 23 rounds of high-dosage chemotherapy across the span of nine weeks, each session lasting around five hours. He described the experience as brutal, stating it gradually got worse. There were days he couldn’t walk, eat and felt like he was going to vomit.

“My family had to see daddy get sick and weak,” Rozneck said. “They had to watch

Through it all, Rozneck said his wife was like a robot, always looking to do the next thing to help him. But when she heard the cancer was gone, she broke down in tears.

“There are too many emotions to put into words,” said Karrie Rozneck, Rozneck’s wife. “The fear and worry of losing the love of my life was lifted.”

Rozneck said he relied heavily on his faith, family and his friends’ and co-workers’ support to get through the process. He said his teammates gave him gift cards to order food and made gift baskets for him and his family. Rozneck said they offered to make food, but due to COVID-19 and his suppressed immune system from the chemotherapy, he had to decline. Rozneck specifically said Capt. Lauren Hughes, former Schriever chaplain, helped navigate him through some of his toughest times.

“Chief’s story reminds us of our humanity and mortality,” Hughes said. “We’ve all experienced difficult times in life, but sometimes we forget that our leaders are humans, too. To hear that your Chief faced a seemingly ‘undefeatable opponent’ is sobering and makes you reflect on what’s really important in life. He could have been grief stricken, but he had a great support system, leaned into what gave him hope and was mentally determined to defeat cancer.”

Despite battling and beating stage two testicular cancer, Rozneck said he doesn’t view his story as anything special. He hopes Airmen hear his story and feel safe to reach out for help or mentorship if they’re going through a similar experience.

“There [are] two days of the week you should never worry about and that’s yesterday and tomorrow,” Rozneck said. “Take care of today and tomorrow will take care of itself. I’ve learned to ‘just be.’ Just be today, be in the moment, give your attention to who you’re with and just focus on where you’re at.”

Being self-aware of the words we choose to say is often easy when we’re talking about the words we choose to say: Wishing your coworker a good morning. Thanking the janitor. Offering a cheerful word to your neighbor.

We make a conscious effort to inject that rhetorical positivity into our daily routine. But as our day blurs into the autopilot grind of social interaction, perhaps it’s what we consciously choose not to say — those snide remarks, the witty but lackadaisical comments, the words spoken out of context — that matter even more.

While it’s true that one positive word can change someone’s entire day, we often tend to trust the extemporaneous prattle uttered in a flippantly Freudian fashion more than the carefully scripted good mornings or thank yous.

This reminds me of a lesson in morality I learned from my mother, rooted in my personal faith tradition.

The Torah (Jewish scripture) promotes a universal code of values for all humanity called the “7 Commandments of Noah.”

Akin to the Ten Commandments, these seven guiding principles empower humanity to reach the level of righteousness Noah achieved in Genesis 6:9. Each of these seven commandments can be unpacked and

expanded into many more derivative values.

One of these universal commandments is to not eat the flesh of an animal while it is still alive (Genesis 9:4).

This is further developed throughout the Torah to encompass the broader concept of humanity's role in protecting, safeguarding and accepting responsibility for the animals we share this planet with.

“Quite often, it’s what you don’t say that matters.”

So, why express this humane value in the negative, to “not eat the flesh of a living animal” (Talmud, Sanhedrin 56a)?

The answer I received from my mother, is that the prolific prosperity of morality often begins with a simple moment of self-restraint. In other words, it’s what we don’t do or say that creates the fertile groundwork to let goodness flourish. Noah built an ark and a safe space that saved lives.

By choosing what we won’t say, we can do the same. When we clear out the verbal “sticks and stones,” our relationships can truly flower. So the next time you converse with a coworker, family member or even yourself, ask, “What did I not say that matters?”

FORT MEADE, Md. — The Vice Chief of Space Operations Gen. David D. “DT” Thompson swore in the first four Space Force recruits here Oct. 20, placing them on a direct path to Basic Military Training and marking another milestone in the new service’s growth and development.

“They are the future, and it’s incredible to be in their service.”

The ceremony at the Military Entrance Processing Station, Baltimore was followed hours later by a similar ceremony at MEPS, Denver, Colorado, for three additional Space Force recruits. All seven are bound for seven and a half weeks of basic training at Air Force BMT, which is located at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

While the number is modest, the actions are both meaningful and symbolic of the Space Force’s evolution since it was created Dec. 20, 2019, as the nation’s newest military branch.

“Today is an important milestone as we stand up the Space Force,” Thompson said. “Until now, we’ve been focused on building our initial ranks with transfers from the Air Force. With these new recruits, we begin to look to the future of our force by bringing in the right people directly to realize our aspirations of building a tech-savvy service that’s reflective of the nation we serve.”

Space Force bootcamp will capitalize on the existing foundation of Air Force BMT and will incorporate space-specific curriculum to create the Space Force experience.

“We’re excited to see this happen,” said Chief Master Sgt. Roger A. Towberman, senior enlisted advisor, U.S. Space Force. “The Air Force team at Basic Military Training has been outstanding and deserves most of the credit for

making this happen quickly. To watch these first Space Force recruits take their oath for the first time is something I will never forget. They are the future, and it’s incredible to be in their service.”

Stephanie Miller, director of military accession policy, Office of the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Military Personnel Policy joined Thompson and Towberman, along with MEPS and Air Force Recruiting Service regional leaders, at the Baltimore event.

Space Force leadership has previously stated diversity among its ranks is one of its priorities in standing up the new service. Among the new recruits, there are two women and five men; two African Americans and five caucasians.

The recruits hail from Colorado, Maryland and Virginia, and their ages range from 18-31.

The events in Maryland and Colorado offer a tangible, real-world example of the next phase of the Space Force’s development. After months of planning and actions to establish policies, procedures and doctrine, the induction of the seven space professionals is evidence that the force is proceeding forward as senior leaders expected.

By the end of fiscal year 2021, the Space Force is expected to have about 6,500 active-duty Space Force members. The goal is to have about 2,500 members in space operations career fields in the service by the end of calendar year 2020.

Beginning Dec. 1, active duty senior enlisted Airmen in cyber, intelligence, acquisitions, and engineering career fields will begin transferring, with officers and other enlisted members in those career fields beginning transfers Feb. 1. From there, the size of the force is expected to grow consistently over time until it reaches 6,500.

50th CES Airmen assist in the community

Six Airmen from the 50th Civil Engineer Squadron provided their knowledge and resources Sept. 5 in downtown Colorado Springs to assist elderly women at their home.

The Airmen, who participate in one community involvement event per quarter, volunteered their weekend to clean the women’s yard and build a fence to help them feel safer at their home.

The residence did not previously have a fence and Greg Kovach, Habitat for Humanity director of operations, said homeless people would often come to the property and sleep in their yard.

After learning of this, Habitat for Humanity asked for assistance from the 50th CES in order to help build a fence.

“Our first task involved securing the backyard with a five-foot privacy fence and cleaning trees and brush from the yard,” Kovach said. “In addition, the structure was compromised by rotting siding, which we replaced, caulked and painted.”

Per a service agreement with Habitat for Humanity, Sarah Buchen, Habitat for Humanity volunteer coordinator, said they could not provide names of the women whom 50th CES Airmen assisted, but said the fence helped the two women feel safer.

The Airmen participate in one community involvement event per quarter and assisted Habitat for Humanity with the project.

Humanity reached out to the Airmen because they recognized the 50th CES’s capabilities.

“We put a group together and [Habitat for Humanity] shot us some projects,” BurkePuertas said. “Helping out with this situation was one of those projects and we made sure to assist as best as we could.”

Habitat for Humanity, a non-profit that brings people together to build homes, communities and hope, according to its mission statement, selected CES due to the pair’s relationship and for their ability to work cohesively.

Burke-Puertas said the CES provides skills Habitat for Humanity desires, which

eliminated the process of hiring a contractor for this quick project. “[Habitat for Humanity] loves working with us and we love working with them because we can provide the skills they need,” Burke-Puertas said. “Plus, as a team, we have the communication and discipline to swiftly complete a job.”

Though the unit often completes similar volunteer projects throughout the community, Burke-Puertas said the experience serves as a reminder to value his abilities and how it can help.

“It’s humbling to go out and be able to do something like that,” Burke-Puertas said.

“You don’t realize how much of an impact you can have until after the fact. It helps you appreciate the little things that you sometimes overlook.”

Senior Master Sgt. Matthew Voorhees, 50th CES superintendent, was grateful for the opportunity and said helping people is something Airmen should feel good about.

“We have a lot of rock stars in the unit that love to contribute to the community,” Voorhees said. “It wasn’t surprising that folks would step up to help out an organization where a majority of the work requirements are directly related to construction, which is our strong suit.”

The CES plans to do future work with Habitat for Humanity and help move people in the community where they live.

JFCC IMD Airmen transfer to U.S. Space Force

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Oct. 15, five members of Joint Functional Component Command for Integrated Missile Defense transferred from the U.S. Air Force to the still growing U.S. Space Force during a ceremony here.

“More than 8,500 Airmen answered that call, and these five were among the 2,400 selected.”

Lt. Gen. Daniel L. Karbler, JFCC IMD commander, presided over the ceremony in honor of Maj. Brady Behrendt, Maj. Christopher Ewald, Senior Master Sgt. Michael List, Master Sgt. Matthew Zornes, and Staff Sgt. David Ruesche.

Their journey began a few months ago, when the USSF encouraged Air Force professionals in space-related career fields to apply for transfer. More than 8,500 Airmen answered that call, and these five were among the 2,400 selected.

“You are volunteers and now you are plank holders who have taken advantage of the opportunity to get in on the ground floor of Space Force standing up our newest uniformed service,” Karbler said. “I think

Karbler then administered the Oath of Office and the Oath of Enlistment and pre-

sented each newly appointed Space Force service member with a plaque. The plaques identify each of these teammates as an official plank holder of the USSF and one of the first to join its ranks.

Stay alive, don’t drink and drive

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo.

— It’s important Airmen drive sober while operating a vehicle as it can affect more than just themselves.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, about one in three traffic deaths in the U.S. involve a drunk driver.

“There is no legal [blood alcohol content] when you’re driving in Colorado,” said Capt.

Jordan Davies, Peterson-Schriever Garrison legal office chief of discharges. “You can be arrested, charged and convicted of [driving under the influence] if you have any level of alcohol in your system [that] impairs your ability to drive, it’s called a DWAI, driving while ability impaired, so you could have BAC of .05, .03, or .02 and still be arrested and convicted of DUI.” For perspective, one drink raises the average person’s BAC to .02.

Davies said if convicted of a civilian DUI, the penalties include fines, jail time, license revocation, mandatory community service, alcohol rehabilitation classes and installing a certified ignition interlock device on a privately owned vehicle, which prompts the operator of a vehicle has to blow into a breathalyzer to start the vehicle.

Article 113 of the Uniformed Code of Military Justice states operating a car, boat or airplane while intoxicated is a criminal act and carries consequences. However, Airmen

cannot receive civilian criminal DUI charges and an Article 113 simultaneously.

“If you get a military DUI, your base driving privileges may be suspended or revoked and you face anything from paperwork to a court-martial depending on the circumstances.”

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 10,511 people died from drunk-driving crashes in the U.S. in 2018.

“It’s illegal, harmful to others and it is

detrimental to your career,” said Tech.

Sgt. Nicholas Jenich, 50th Security Forces Squadron noncommissioned officer in charge of standardization and evaluations.

“Airmen should think before they drink and always have a plan.”

Jenich said the 50th SFS monitors all vehicles entering and on the installation to ensure the safety of Airmen and their families.

“We watch and observe to see if a vehicle is swerving,” Jenich said. “We monitor its speed and if there are any abnormal changes

to the vehicle’s speed. Once we make contact with the driver, we ask a series of questions and run through different tests.”

The tests include going through the alphabet, starting at a random letter, balance tests, such as standing on one leg, walking in a straight line for nine steps and turning and the horizontal gaze nystagmus test, when the officer observes the drivers eyes while asking them questions.

If the officer has determined that the driver is intoxicated, the officer will take them to the station where they will have to provide blood and urine samples to identify the drivers BAC. In the U.S., there is an alcohol-related traffic death every 50 minutes, causing a total of $44 billion in damages every year.

Davies recommends Airmen have a designated driver or use a taxi service if they plan on drinking.

“The convenience of driving yourself home after you have been drinking will never be worth the penalties that go along with getting a DUI,” Davies said. “Always have a plan before you go out drinking. The most common reason people drink and drive is they think they are OK to drive.”

Air Force reduces tuition assistance

The fiscal year limit for Military Tuition Assistance has decreased from $4,500 to $3,750, effective immediately. The credit hour limits remain the same at $250 per semester hour and $166.66 per quarter hour. All TA applications will be routed using the normal procedures on the Air Force Virtual Education Center, and can be submitted up to 45 days in advance of the start of the course.

Safety 411 Be aware of surroundings while driving

On the west side of Colorado Springs, there is a significant overpopulation of deer due to the open lands and parks. To avoid accidents, remember the following: • Deer are herd animals, so if you see one, know

there are likely more nearby.

• They’re most active at dawn and dusk, when it can be difficult for drivers to see.

• Always wear your seat belt, which can reduce injuries if you do hit an animal.

• Slow down if you see “deer crossing” road signs.

• If you’re on a multi-lane road, travel in the center lane, if possible.

• If you see a deer, brake firmly, but stay in your lane. Swerving could cause you to lose control, and the animal may dart in the same direction that you swerve.

• Honk your horn to scare away deer.

If the above plan fails, take the following steps after a collision with a deer: • Pull to the side of the road as soon as it is safe.

• Turn on your hazard lights and remain in the vehicle until you are sure it is safe.

• Call 911 to report the incident and seek medical attention if needed.

• Stay away from the deer.

• If active duty, call your supervisor to start a mishap report.
