.E. WARREN AIR FORCE BASE, Wyo. — Do you like your job? Do your Airmen like their jobs? If you answered no, why? How you answer those questions can say a lot about your organization. Believe it or not, you can create a better workplace for your Airmen.

At the bare minimum, think about what people need and want from a job. Abraham Maslow’s book, “A Theory of Human Motivation,” tells us each person has a hierarchy of needs: physiological, security, belongingness, esteem and ultimately self-actualization needs. Money is a prime motivator to work, but job satisfaction requires much more. It requires a job that creates belongingness, esteem and self-actualization. It requires opportunities for growth, advancement and achievement.

This is where you, the leader, come into play. A primary goal of leadership is to influence the performance of followers to accomplish a goal. That’s easy to say, but putting it into practice can be convoluted and confusing. Performance is the product of ability and effort. If the ability is low, it is unlikely any amount of effort will result in high performance. If your team’s performance is low, you must ask which area is lacking:

VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. — For the first time, the Combined Force Space Component Command’s 18th Space Control Squadron began publically sharing data for debris-on-debris conjunction predictions via www.SpaceTrack.org, Sept. 24.

Previously, the 18th SPCS only released debris-on-active satellite conjunction prediction data publically due to limited conjunction screening and reporting capacity.

Through a project titled Reduction of Conjunction Assessment Processing, 18th SPCS personnel reduced the daily number of legacy low to no-risk early conjunction reporting to satellite owners and operators by more than 30%.

Additionally, the 18th SPCS increased the total number of objects screened daily by more than 350%.

“The objectives of project ReCAP were to improve spaceflight safety by reducing the number of unnecessary conjunction reports, and screen more than 27,000 objects that could potentially collide and create more debris in space,” said Lt. Col. Justin Sorice, 18th SPCS commander.

“Through innovation and automation the space warfighters in the 18th Space Control Squadron improved frontline

space defense and awareness for all satellite owners and operators.”

The 18th SPCS mission is to defend freedom of action in space for the Joint Force, multinational partners, and humanity. The 18th SPCS monitors approximately 3,200 active satellites for close approaches with approximately 24,000 pieces of space debris, and issues an average of 15 high-interest warnings for active near-earth satellites, and 10 high-interest warnings for active deepspace satellites, each day.

Additionally, 18th SPCS shares Space Domain Awareness information with more than 100 governmental, academic, and commercial partner organizations from 25 nations through formal Space Situational Awareness data sharing agreements, and www.Space-Track.org.

“Project ReCAP is just another example of how we are supporting spaceflight safety, and protecting the space domain for future generations,” said Sorice. “This was a big data problem that was solved by young, motivated, and innovative space operators. I’m honored to work alongside a superior team of space professionals at the 18th Space Control Squadron; and project ReCAP is just another example of what our stellar space warriors are doing to protect our assets and interests in the space domain.”

VPI strengthens connections with kits

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The phrase, “Connect with your Airmen,” is tossed around frequently, but “how” is never clear, prompting the Schriever violence prevention integrator to create Schriever leadership connection kits.

“It really is helpful to break the ice with questions that are not normally asked in an everyday settings.”

Jessica Ditson, Schriever VPI, selected 14 items to include in the kits.

“Connection kits are full of things for commanders to start conversations with those who work with and for them,” Ditson said. “The kits have everything from professional development-oriented books to fun ice breakers to get to know Airmen better.”

The kits are available to all commanders, first sergeants and superintendents, and are based on the needs of the total force.

Lt. Col. Timothy Ryan, 4th Space Operations Squadron commander, said his leadership has used the contents of the kits during introductions with new Airmen in the squadron.

“Some of the [items] really make you think and can help connect individual personalities around the office and squadron,” Ryan said. “It really is helpful to break the ice with questions that are

Ditson said by building stronger connections, the risk factors for suicide become mitigated as Airmen can find a sense of belongingness and feel more included when leadership approaches with intent to engage at a personal level.

“If we start to dig deeper and inquire

about who our Airmen really are, it creates a connection that’s more personal,” she said. “When you create a personal connection, it builds trust, so maybe that Airman who’s going through something will feel more comfortable talking to you about it instead of considering alternatives.”

CSAF #22 visits Peterson AFB

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Chief of Staff of the Air Force Gen. Charles Q. Brown, Jr. visited with Airmen at Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado, Sept. 22-24.

Brown currently serves as the 22nd chief of staff of the Air Force and is the first African-American to lead any branch of the U.S. Armed Forces.

The CSAF traveled to Colorado Springs to attend the U.S. Air Force Academy change of command and retirement ceremony before returning to Peterson to meet with United States Space Command, United States Northern Command and Peterson-Schriever Garrison personnel.

At Peterson, Brown attended a USSPACECOM mission brief followed by a diversity and inclusion discussion with the first sergeants.

“I’m extremely proud to serve with each of the outstanding Airmen I met at Peterson Air Force Base.”

The CSAF also made time to recognize a handful of Airmen for their outstanding conduct and performance.

“I really appreciate the CSAF taking time out of his incredibly busy schedule to recognize the achievements of some of P-S GAR’s finest air and space professionals,” said Col. James Smith, P-S GAR commander. “Their accomplishments demonstrate the hard work and dedication our folks pour into the mission each and every day. As commander, I could not be more proud.”

To commemorate their achievements, Brown personally coined each Airman at multiple squadrons including 21st Civil Engineer Squadron, 21st Security Forces Squadron and 21st Comptroller Squadron.

“I’m extremely proud to serve with each of the outstanding Airmen I met at Peterson Air Force Base,” Brown said.

“Together, these Airmen are anticipating future challenges, navigating change and succeeding.”

This was Brown’s first official visit to Peterson AFB since assuming command Aug. 28.

dissatisfaction and job satisfaction are not related. The factors that lead to dissatisfaction are not the same as those that lead to satisfaction.

Hygiene factors leading to job dissatisfaction are: policy and administration, supervision, relationship with supervisor, work conditions, salary, relationship with peers, personal life, relationship with subordinates, status and security.

Motivator factors leading to job satisfaction are: achievement, recognition, the work itself, responsibility, advancement and growth.

While these lists certainly aren’t all-inclusive, it points out an important con-

cept, keeping “hygiene factors” in check is important to keep people from becoming dissatisfied, but you will not create satisfaction and motivation by focusing all of your attention there. People find true job satisfaction when their need for self-actualization is fulfilled — when you provide them with opportunities that lead to achievement, recognition, increased responsibility, advancement and growth.

Creating genuine opportunities takes intentional planning. In my career field, missile operations, I found that a good place to start is by changing the way authority is delegated.

Some of my crew commanders have taken care of the “commander roles” such as delivering the mission planning brief, making tactical decisions in simulator training and taking care of the administrative duties. That left me feeling like my

only job was to be a second set of hands to launch intercontinental ballistic missiles.

Given that the U.S. has never launched an alert intercontinental ballistic missile, my job was pretty minimal.

You might be thinking, “Wow, what an easy job! How can you complain?” You’re not wrong — it was easy. My “hygiene factors” were in check, but I had zero factors leading to satisfaction. I didn’t hate the job, but it wasn’t motivating.

Other commanders afforded me the opportunity to deliver the mission brief, make decisions and fill out paperwork and awards packages. Those times made me feel important. When I delivered briefings I gained public speaking skills and was recognized at the table. When I made tactical decisions and guided my crew through the mission, I felt accomplished. When I learned how to fill out

officer performance reports and awards packages, I gained an important career skill and grew as an Airman.

Those commanders, by delegating authority and responsibility to the lowest level, created factors that fulfilled my needs that the paycheck alone could not.

Their leadership created job satisfaction that directly impacted my performance.

I was taught how to fulfill the roles of the commander as a deputy, and I can pay it forward for my deputies. This gives me opportunities to develop and help my subordinates grow, further adding to my sense of accomplishment and satisfaction.

What can you do as a leader to give Airmen recognition, responsibility, advancement, or personal and professional growth? The answer to this question can change your answer to my first question.

P-S GAR preps for fiscal year closeout

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The Peterson-Schriever Garrison ramps up its activity as it aims to fulfill projects across both bases as the fiscal year closes Sept. 30.

During the fiscal year, which began from Oct. 1, the 21st Comptroller Squadron and 50th Contracting Squadron provide units funds to finance their missions.

Throughout the closeout process, it’s important Airmen maintain good communication to fulfill projects. The close out includes multiple units and they must coordinate to ensure mission success.

“That necessary communication needs to occur between not only members of the squadron, but also between us and our teammates around this location and [U.S. Space Force Headquarters],” said Capt. Jeremy Lacewell, 21st CPTS director of operations.

This connection includes the 50th CONS, which manages the government purchase card program and writes contracts to fulfill funding.

Without the preparation from the mission partners, budget office and the contracting office, Staff Sgt. Arron Riffle, 50th CONS contracting officer, said the fiscal year close out wouldn’t be as successful.

“The end of the fiscal year is about ensuring the appropriated funds are obligated before they expire [at midnight Sept. 30],” Riffle said. “All of that [work] is meaningless unless we are providing the supplies and

The CPTS currently has 85 projects and requirements it plans to fund and Master Sgt. Wilfredo Mateo, 21st CPTS Financial Analysis flight chief, said that number could change.

“Our local list of unfunded items and projects ebbs and flows as we work the numbers and packages with 50 CONS,” Mateo said.

the squadron helped U.S. Space Command complete a $25 million building lease agreement in addition to their required projects.

“This was certainly the largest dollar figure we’ve certified all year,” Mateo said.

“We also helped USSPACECOM execute a $2 million project for their new office in [Washington] D.C., to give them a dedicated space as a combatant command.”

The CPTS will also fund $387,000 to help remodel the Schriever AFB education center before the end of this year.

“This will allow promotion testing on site versus having our members driving to the Peterson testing center,” Mateo said. “They’ll also be able to provide other testing services and have a dedicated classroom to conduct professional seminars and various courses.

This is a huge quality of life improvement for our Airmen.”

Lacewell hopes the final month of the fiscal year serves as a learning experience for younger Airmen. Rather than the period being stressful, Airmen can gather information from someone such as Lacewell, who is completing his fourth close out.

“Airmen should ask as many questions as they can, but also sit with someone who is actively in that process and watch how he or she works through the different systems,” Lacewell said. “In a way, [closeouts] get easier with time because you start to understand what to look for around this time of the year.”

Mateo also ensures Airmen are informed of their significance during the process and highlights how their duties affect the garrison.

“Our Airmen work too hard to be limited by aging equipment, dilapidated work areas and concerns about their paycheck being correct,” Mateo said. “It takes a team of people to manage all the intricacies of accounting and budget for the base. Without us, I don’t think we’d be able to execute taxpayer dollars across our various mission sets and sustain our way of life.”

Airman finds stability at stables

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Airman Laycee Presutti, 21st Security Forces Squadron installation entry controller, strengthens her resilience volunteering with the Safe Landing Horse Rescue at the Triple S Ranch in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

At the ranch, Presutti cleans the stables and ensures the animals have food and water.

“It just gives you a peace of mind, not having to bring work with you,” she said.

“Resilience is important to me because it’s all about mindset and overcoming things. Taking a break from work and volunteering with the animals definitely strengthens my resilience.”

The ranch is home to horses, pigs, donkeys and an alpaca. All of the animals are rescues and in the process of being rehabilitated and trained, with the goal of eventually finding a forever home.

Jaquie Schutzenhofher, Triple S Ranch owner, operator, riding instructor and horse trainer, started the ranch about four years ago and experiences the benefits of working with the animals daily.

“Horses have a huge impact on people,” Schutzenhofher said. “There’s a saying, ‘The outside of a horse is good for the inside of the soul,’ and I am one hundred percent all in on that.”

Schutzenhofher said horses have helped her a lot through the years, especially when going through tough times.

When Presutti first arrived to Colorado in April 2020, she was determined to find an activity that would allow her to spend some time off base, meet new people and interact with animals.

She researched local horse stables and found the Triple S Ranch, where she has volunteered for the past five months.

“Back home, I lived in an area where there were just farms,” Presutti said. “All of my best friends had horses. I didn’t have any myself, but every weekend and every day after work we’d go ride or do something with animals.”

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The Peterson-Schriever Garrison safety office led a confined spaces training in collaboration with the 21st Medical Squadron bioenvironmental flight and the Schriever Fire Department Sept. 24 at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, to ensure the 50th Space Communications Squadron members could execute their duty requirements.

Education center upgrades will benefit Airmen, civilians

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo.

— The 50th Force Support Squadron’s Force Development Flight will soon have a revamped education center in Bldg. 210 to service Schriever education needs of Airmen and civilians.

During the fiscal year close out, the 50th Contracting Squadron and the 21st Comptroller Squadron helped the flight secure more than $500,000 for the education center renovations, which are scheduled to be completed in mid-November or December.

The upgraded education center will include improved lighting, soundproof walls beneficial for testing and new spaces for staff.

It will also be used for the College Level Examination Program and the Dantes Subject Standardized Tests.

“To have the resources here so Airmen don’t have to go to another base is critical for us,” said James Driscoll, 50th FSS Force Development Flight chief.

Previously, Airmen had to schedule appointments at Peterson Air Force Base to complete their training and tests.

“We’ll have three new positions and by adding the civilian education training

counselor spot, I’m going to have a partner,” Clark said.

Due to the ongoing renovations, the unit is currently dispersed in five different locations throughout Bldg. 210, but Driscoll said the temporary inconvenience will provide long-term benefits.

“The units that have accommodated us have been phenomenal and allowing us to [use] their area has been critical,” he said.

“We’re able to stay inside the same building where people can find us.”

Despite the changes and construction happening with the remodel, Driscoll said their current resources remain accessible to Airmen.

“We’ve not lost one day of service to any of the customers or members so that’s been a great asset for us,” he said. “We’re asking training managers and supervisors to be a little more efficient in the scheduling process. We don’t want anyone to be overdue, or miss anything. It’s worked out very well so far.”

OFF BASE Fire Prevention Week

Safety tips to protect your family from fire mishaps:

• Install smoke alarms on each level of the home, outside each sleeping area and inside each bedroom.

• Install carbon monoxide alarms on each level of your home and outside sleeping areas (within 15 feet).

• Post emergency numbers (fire/police; poison control; utilities: [water/gas/electric]).

• Know where the emergency shut-offs are (water/gas/electric).

• Have a multipurpose fire extinguisher inside the home; store at a safe distance from the stove for access.

• Know at least two ways out of every room.
